Today, our dear friend and Senior Director at Daystar, Melissa, talks about the second spiritual milestone (from Are My Kids on Track) called Identity and how deeply important it is in the lives of kids. We have the high and holy calling of echoing the truths that God is speaking into the lives of the kids we love…of helping to remind them not only of who they are, but whose they are. You will love this conversation with Melissa on how to do just that. Ep 1: The Daystar Story Grab a copy of Are My Kids on Track? to follow along with us through the season! Are My Kids on Track? How are you feeling today? It seems to be one filled with lots of anxiety and trepidation, for lots of us. We kept talking about what we most wanted to hear on Election Day, and so we recorded a podcast including just that! We've got a few parenting reminders on what it looks like to model all of these important milestones we've been talking about, some conversation starters to share with the kids you love AND the encouragement we needed today…and thought you might, too! Let's continue to pray together for wisdom for our leaders and hope for our communities. And let's keep thinking on that wise quote about being the change we want to see in the world. Grateful to be in it with you today, whatever your political affiliations are, and hope this episode brings you some needed encouragement and hope. Questions to ask the kids you love! If you were elected President, what would you want to do the first few days in office? What are some of the greatest needs in our world today? What kind of leader would you want to be? What would you want the new president to know is important for kids today? In Raising Worry-Free Girls, Sissy defines anxiety as an overestimation of the problem and an underestimation of themselves. The same is true for boys. In 30 years of counseling kids, we have never seen kids struggle with the idea of resourcefulness like we do today. You all, we believe this conversation is crucial to helping the kids we love grow up into emotionally healthy adults. They need both the knowledge and the tools it takes to be resourceful. In today's podcast, Sissy and David are talking about what we can do to help kids build this profoundly important muscle. Y'all—this one is a PLEASE LISTEN episode. We have been really excited about this episode coming out at this time in our world since we got it scheduled. But after talking with our friends Michael and Melissa Wear, we believe this conversation is imperative for all of us… no matter our political affiliation. It has been said about Michael Wear, “Even as we find ourselves in a crisis of disillusionment, and even despair, about the state of American politics, Wear reminds us that we must hold fast to the belief that we can change our country and our world for the better. Each of us would do well to adopt at least a bit of Wear's realistic hopefulness.” His wife speaks to the same kind of buoyant, practical hopefulness, which we all need in this season. We can't wait for you to listen in on this one. We're so grateful to be talking about empathy on the podcast this week. We believe the muscle of empathy is one that kids are struggling to develop more than ever before. In this episode, we talk about why and, even more importantly, what we can do about it. Empathy truly is a pre-requisite for healthy relationships. So, let's all work together to help the kids we love grow in their awareness, love, and empathy for those around them, including and maybe even especially those that live under the same roof! . . . . . We were thrilled to be invited to the big announcement from Meta this week introducing their Instagram Teen Accounts! We got to sit down with Naomi Gleit, Head of Product at Meta, to talk about just what these changes mean for teens and for parents. We believe this is an important lesson…to hear about the changes and to hear her heart in wanting to partner with parents. It was such an encouraging conversation for us and we believe it will be for those of you in the throes of trying to protect your kids on social media. And, here are the highlights: private accounts (that started rolling out on Tuesday where they automatically shift your teenager to a private account) stricter messaging restrictions sensitive content restrictions (including anti-bullying AND cosmetic procedures limited interactions with only people they follow time limit reminders and sleep mode We're trying to get our own teen accounts, too! Y'all, we really believe this episode is a MUST LISTEN. On a 1 to 10 scale when it comes to emotions, we're seeing more kids who are living at 10 than ever before. They're using big words. You've heard us say it…rather than sad, they're saying “I'm depressed.” Rather than worried or stressed, they're saying “I have anxiety.” When they get the very most upset, they say “I want to kill myself!” And we're left wondering—and panicking—that it really might be true. We have GOT to help kids find their way not only to accurate words to describe their emotion but to the FOUNDATIONAL milestone of perspective. In other words, we know, as adults, that most of life is about a 3 to a 7 on a scale and we have to help kids find their way to the 3's and the 7's, so we really do know the 10's are happening. Plus, that kind of perspective is crucial to healthy relationships, workplaces…just healthy life, in general. So, we really do believe this conversation is deeply important. Share it with your friends, with your spouse, on your stories, in all the spaces. We've got to change things for the kids we love. . . . . . As the director of family counseling at Daystar Counseling in Nashville, TN, David Thomas has seen some patterns develop over the years. “Some of the healthiest parents I have worked with over the years are parents in recovery,” says David. “Because you've done your work: those basic tenets of ‘I understand I have a struggle, I need God, I need community.'” Those are principles that apply for everyone, whether in recovery or not, and they reflect a kind of humble acknowledgement of reality that every parent needs. But there's another way into these concepts: “The other set of parents that I see are the healthiest are those who are using the Enneagram,” says David. “You're getting connected with some of those same things. Understanding, ‘Here's what the shadow side looks like, Here are my traps, Here are my vulnerabilities.” This week, we talk to David Thomas about his own experience dealing with the Enneagram One's inner monologue, how the shadow side comes out in parenting, and how the Enneagram can help us raise emotionally strong boys. — David Thomas, LMSW, is the director of family counseling at Daystar Counseling in Nashville, TN, and the coauthor of ten books, including the bestselling Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys and Are My Kids on Track? Every boy needs things only a father can give. In part 2 of this 2 part conversation, we continue our interview with David Thomas, a sought after counselor with 26 years experience helping boys and families. We begin to dive into understanding the developmental stages of boys into men. • Explorer (roughly age 1-4) • Lover (5-8) • Individual (9-12) • Wanderer (13-18) • Warrior (17-25) I also asked him "Is it our job as fathers to push or pull our sons through the stages to become men, or do they naturally flow from one into the other?" What mistakes are common for fathers to make when fathering boys as they transition into manhood, between 7 and 20+ years old? What do we as fathers tend to focus too much on? Too little on? And what should we focus more on instead? What is your counsel to fathers when we blow it? How do we most effectively reconnect with sons? Very practically, what habits can we, as fathers, build into our routines with our sons to keep the lines of communication and joy open? What common qualities do you see in good, effective fathers? What do you want to say to men who fear they do not have what it takes to raise a son? (Maybe because fathering was not modeled well for them?) If you are a father to a boy, you will wanna hear this encouraging discussion. And be sure to go back and listen to part 1. As we talk about raising mentally healthy kids, I can't think of a more relevant topic right now for all of us than anxiety. Worry and anxiety seemed to have peaked in our country as COVID-19 hit, but it certainly has not disappeared. And while we as adults tend to focus on the big life things, kids are still dealing with the natural anxieties of adolescence. In this episode I'm talking with the Director of Child and Adolescent Counseling at Daystar Counseling Ministries Sissy Goff, M. Ed., LPC-MHSP about some practical things we can do to help our kids socially, emotionally, spiritually, and functionally develop well. Key points from our conversation:
We have been hearing (and experiencing) a great deal in regards to mental and emotional health these days. The events of 2020 seem to have highlighted some issues that have been around for quite some time, we had just come up with some pretty good ways of avoiding them. When it comes to our kids, the issues related to emotional health are growing. One of the best things we can do to increase our emotional health is to identify and talk about what we are feeling. And I think we would do well to help our kids do the same. David Thomas joins us again for part 2 of our conversation drawing from his book, “Are My Kids on Track? The 12 Emotional, Social and Spiritual Milestones Your Child Needs to Reach.” In Episode 78 David and I talked about the 4 emotional milestones our sons need to reach, and today we cover the 4 social milestones they need to reach. David offers such valuable insight into boys’ development and how we, as their moms, can help them reach the most important milestones. I love this topic so much, and I think you will, too! Meredith and Kaytee are back with SO many books my fingers are cramped (this is becoming a theme…). You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: family presentation at homeschool group and going into a new book completely blind. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got five current reads this week, and they are sci-fi/fantasy heavy, which is WEIRD for us! Lots of strong opinions here! We’ve got an update for you on our Slow But Steady reads and what’s been happening in the past week. Also a short grammar lesson on “Swifties”. For our deep dive this week, we had a number of listeners (and real life friends) request our favorite parenting books. This will span everything from pregnancy/birth to infanthood to growing children to adding siblings. Plus one funny pick for when you just want to laugh it off. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands. We’ve got books “with caveats” this week. So, stay tuned and listen closely to see if they are actually right for you! As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Welcome to Season Two of the Raising Boys and Girls podcast (formerly known as the Are My Kids on Track podcast) with authors and counselors Sissy Goff, David Thomas and Melissa Trevathan hosted by Sarah Bragg. Just like with season one (Are My Kids on Track), there will be small group questions available for you to download so that you can process what we said either one your own, with your partner or with a small group. We want to begin season two with an introduction. In this episode, you will get to know the voices here in case you haven’t listened to season one and why the conversation about who gets are and what they need at each developmental stage matters.
I am the producer and host of the podcast Are My Kids on Track where I interview the brilliant Sissy Goff, David Thomas and Melissa Trevathan about the 12 emotional, social and spiritual milestones every kid needs to develop. I thought it would be fun to release one of those episodes here on Surviving Sarah for you to enjoy. These conversations are so very helpful and practical. I highly recommend listening to that podcast--there are only 13 episodes! You can even download discussion questions to go along with them here. You can also purchase their book of the same title here.
Recursos Mencionados Essa série "Vivendo Virtudes" está baseada no livro In This House We Will Giggle da autora Courtney DeFeo. Are My Kids on Track. Our guests this week are two of our favorite people. We believe they will fast become two of your favorite people as well. Licensed counselors Sissy Goff and David Thomas serve at Daystar Counseling in Nashville. Along with Daystar's founder, Melissa Trevethan, they host a website of helpful resources for parents called Raising Boys and Girls. In this episode, Sissy, who serves as Director of Child & Adolescent Counseling, talks about the increasing anxiety in today's culture. Particularly, she shares stories of how anxiety is impacting girl's development. In addition, David, who serves as Director of Family Counseling, talks about boys and anger. David and Sissy, with their decades of counseling experience, provide very practical ways we can help our kids best channel their negative emotions. Based on their new book, Are My Kids on Track?, you'll learn about the emotional, social, and spiritual milestones of your kids. Personally, this is a book I devoured. As single parents we have to be careful to establish appropriate boundaries especially with our kids. A growing trend of kids with 'emotional entitlement' can be traced back to overcompensating parents, which is a common occurrence with single parents. Today, counselor Sissy Goff explores this often overlooked facet of a single parent's life as well as giving her perspective on questions like: 1.What are the most common fears or issues you hear from kids of divorced families that they may NOT be sharing with their parents? 2. Based on your new book, Are My Kids on Track? The 12 Emotional, Social, and Spiritual Milestones Your Child Needs to Reach, what are the most significant stumbling blocks Solo parents face with their kids and some practical ways to guide our kids through them? 3. From a KID'S perspective, what is one thing that a parent underestimates about the impact of their Solo season on a kid, and one thing they worry too much about? Sissy Goff, M.Ed., LPC-MHSP has served as the Director of Child and Adolescent Counseling at Daystar Counseling Ministries in Nashville, Tennessee for 24 years. She is the author of eight books including her newest book, Are My Kids on Track?, as well as Raising Girls. Sissy is also a sought-after speaker across the country and a regular guest and contributor to media shows and publications. Visit www.raisingboysandgirls.com
