NEW PODCAST ALERT with Liza Lo! https://sistersinsong.callcast.coor wherever you get your podcasts!  We talk with Liza Lo who grew up in Spain and Amsterdam and is now living in south London where she produced her first album “Familiar.” She had some great advice, “Just keep doing it—even if you feel like there's no point in doing it.”    Drawing inspiration from the likes of Alice Phoebe Lou,Julia Jacklin, and The Staves, Liza Lo's sound meets an intersection where gentle folk-inspired instrumentation meets wistful indie-pop. Inspired by Liza's five-years living in South London, "Gipsy Hill" focusses on the feeling of slow separation from a place that feels like home. The forlorn tracks sees Liza's stirring vocal ruminate over the top of stripped back acoustic guitar and gentle string arrangements that swell into a poignant rush of melancholy. Speaking on the writing of the single, Liza says: "Throughout these 5 years I lost many of my close-knit relationships altered here, from true best friendship, to my parents marriage, to my own romantic love. It's a deeply sorrowful song that describes things from my childhood kitchen, to my best friend's porch and my insular communication after coping to learn withall this change. I hope this song finds some kind of connection with people, it's heartbreaking but I guess love is truly just everything in life and that's why it hits home. A song for the recently brokenhearted, a song for the people that have had to get to learn to live life differently when suddenly losing their best friend to brain injury, this is Gipsy Hill."   Check Liza out here:   Band camp: Liza Lo  Website: Lizalomusic.com  YouTube: Liza Lo  IG: Liza Lo_  Facebook: Liza Lo  Tik Tok: Liza _ _ _ _ Lo

Ep66 — Gipsy Hill's Sam McMeekin on Brewing Sustainably

Will brewing ever truly manage to become ‘sustainable'? Acknowledged by the UK government as a highly energy intensive sector of the economy, the industrial act of making beer has a far larger drain on our natural resources than those simply caused by heating liquid up and cooling it down again.Brewing uses a massive amount of water for a start, whether that's for cleaning, packaging, or making the beer itself. More pertinently, there's the fact that brewing is almost wholly reliant on industrial agriculture perennially lurking in its sizable shadow. The production of grain and hops for brewing has, arguably, the biggest impact on the industry's carbon footprint, which is why breweries like Gipsy Hill in South London are looking for ways to mitigate this. The brewery's founder, Sam McMeekin, has appeared on this podcast before speaking about what's know as ‘regenerative agriculture' – a system of sustainable cultivation that endeavours to increase the amount of carbon locked away by soils and their surrounding ecosystems. At FyneFest in 2022 the brewery was pouring a beer called Regenerator, which in addition to using regeneratively farmed barley malt, also utilised second use hops, reclaimed using a centrifugal filter Gipsy Hill has invested a considerable amount of money in.In August 2024 I paid a visit to the brewery to learn more about its investment into sustainable beer production. Regenerator has now spawned two new core beers. Called Trail (a pale ale) and Swell (a lager) both breweries use completely regeneratively farmed barley, contracted directly by Gipsy Hill and then malted for them at Warminster Maltings. A lot happened at Gipsy Hill after this conversation was recorded, including its acquisition by Sunrise Alliance Beverages – a step it took to avoid putting the company into administration. Which begs the question – can breweries actually afford to invest in sustainability at a meaningful level? Tune in to hear about the efforts Sam and Gipsy Hill continue to make in reducing this brewery's carbon footprint. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. Why do some places feel full of spiritual meaning and some feel desolate? There is a rich understanding of place in the Bible, which is full of stories of the surprising places where God is encountered, often interwoven with hospitality and welcoming the stranger. Andrew Rumsey will explore what place means in our spiritual lives, in the search for meaning and identity, in the Bible, as well as in our own local neighbourhoods, parishes, city and nation. The Right Revd Dr Andrew Rumsey is the Bishop of Ramsbury and was formerly the vicar of Gipsy Hill in the Diocese of Southwark. He is also a musician and poet, who in 2023 released an album, Evensongs. His latest books are 'Parish: An Anglican Theology of Place' and 'English Grounds: A Pastoral Journal'.

Today's episode starts with a statement written by co-founder of London's Gipsy Hill Brewing Co, Sam McMeekin.  The statement, in full, can be read on their Instagram page. This episode was a hard one - not only to discuss sensitively but to put together as a whole.  The topic of workplace culture can be divisive.  Some people have a wonderful experience working for an employer, while another can tell an altogether different tale.Sometimes, it's evident to see the dysfunction or toxicity in a workplace.  But what happens when it's not that clear cut?  Where do we draw the lines between our own interpretation of events and the events themselves? And as an employer who is responsible for the well-being of the staff and one(s) who create and foster and set the tone for their workplace culture, what do we do when things go awry or employees feel that you're not quite hitting the mark?In today's episode, me and Sam have an open and honest discussion surrounding the challenges of workplace culture, the journey he has been on personally, and share some practical steps we can take to ensuring our workplaces are happy, healthy and professional.Nick also shares his thoughts on this, having had negative workplace experience before, while staying mindful that nobody is perfect and the only people we can truly change is ourselves - a good place to start. We've tried to put this together a sensitively as possible and are aware this may be a topic that some listeners, myself included, may find it difficult to listen to.THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY LALLEMAND BREWINGLallemand Brewing, a division of Lallemand Inc., a global producer of yeast and bacteria, is helping breweries achieve their growth and quality goals by offering products, services, and education.Lallemand Brewing's premium brewing yeasts and bacteria deliver unmatched consistency, reliability, and purity, allowing brewers to take full control of the brewing process. At the forefront of innovation, Lallemand Brewing recently launched several dry yeast products: LalBrew Voss, LalBrew Verdant IPA, and WilBrew Philly Sour. For more information about Lallemand products in the UK please contact our local representative Andrew Paterson, global contacts details for the UK and other territories can be found via our website www.lallemandbrewing.comADDITIONAL SUPPORT FROM CRISP MALTSince 1870, Crisp Malt has been producing the finest malt at Great Ryburgh in Norfolk. A cheerful and global citizen, in every sense, Sam is not only a great storyteller, but his own story is fascinating. We never did get to the part about him teaching me Singlish, but that's for another time. After leaving the world of private equity, Sam ventured off to start Gipsy Hill Brewery as a way to be more hands on and to create a better work life balance. But with four young kids at home, he quickly realized that work runs you until you get on top of it. There are a few laughs in this one, but Sam's approach to business and life is inspiring. And he hits on a number of principles that can be applied to any entrepreneur anywhere including; focusing on value and how a product makes someone feel, the idea that you only need a small audience to make a version of a thing, a brand's ability to unite a team and tell a story. When you are a person, like many entrepreneurs wearing many hats, how and when you can start to remove a hat or two, and ultimately at the end of the day, how it's all about fantastic people. Sam's passion, intelligence and heart are on full display and in his words, yeast is magic. Helping tell the story is Michaela Overton, a brewer at Ignition in Sydenham, South London, a brewery founded to create meaningful work for people with learning disabilities, which has gone from glorified homebrew to running two taprooms selling their beers. In this programme, we follow their collaboration with London brewer Gipsy Hill to make a beer as part the Social Brew Collective. Jaega joins in the project teams up with Spotlight Brewing in Goole in East Yorkshire. There she meets Neil, Michael and Kev and Ric who are making beers with names like Undiagnosed and Spectrum to raise awareness of learning disabilities. Spotlight and Ignition are a taste of change to come but Jaega finds opportunities like these in the food industry are hard to come by for most people with learning disabilities so she meets Mencap's Natalie Duo to talk about her work training potential employers in the changes they can make to create a more accessible workplace. Time Codes: 00:00:23 - Introduction 00:02:29 - Setup of interview 00:04:11 - Interview with Tim Bird 01:00:17 - Wrap up 01:00:53 - Contact us The Great North Wood, which was just released through Avery Hill Publishing, is Tim Bird's longest work to date. It's the story of -- or perhaps a better way of putting would be that it's a history or a meditation on -- an area in South London known for its wooded past. This includes areas such as Norwood, Gipsy Hill, Honor Oak, and Sydenham Hill Woods. In fact, as Tim mentions in the interview, Sydenham Hill Woods is really the last vestige of the heavily forested area south of London, and it's where Tim and his family currently reside. What makes The Great North Woodstand out is Tim Bird's use of geographic space to tell his story. As he and Derek discuss over the course of their conversation, character is at a minimum in Tim's work, and he uses location and space to carry his narrative. What's more, the creator often underscores the mystery and magic that has traditionally been a part of Britain's wooded areas. Much of Derek's talk with Tim centers on the new book, but they also discuss his previous comics, such as the various works in his Grey Areaseries, also published by Avery Hill. These are also largely based on location and geographic space, and Tim goes into detail about his evolution as an artist, working through his Grey Areacomics to get to a place where he can more fully explore his surroundings in his latest book.
