There's so much more to say about Singlish after last episode that we're saying some more of it this episode. Poet and academic Gwee Li Sui, author of Spiaking Singlish: A Companion to how Singaporeans Communicate, describes the resistance he received in Singapore when he published Singlish translations of literary works - and why they are important and celebratory for Singlish. And Stacey Mei Yan Fong, baker and author of 50 Pies, 50 States, explains how the language that used to be embarrassing for her is now a huge comfort. "If you grow up being told that one of your first languages, Singlish, is actually a bad version of an already existing language, you kind of get this sense that “I'm just bad at language,” says Bibek Gurung, a former linguist who grew up in Singapore speaking Singlish with his family and friends, while schools and the government tried to quash it. "Language is a fundamental human skill. And to just have this sense that you're bad at this very fundamental skill really does a number to your self esteem and your abilities to communicate in general." Merlynn Tong joins Regina to talk about Golden Blood. Writer and performer in golden blood - first staged at griffin in 2022 Back to stc from 17th sept at wharf 1 Theatre for STC Originally from Singapore Merlynn is known for her screen roles in Jane Campion's Top of the Lake and ABC's In Our Blood. Her previous works for the stage, in which she also starred, include her one-woman shows, Ma Ma Ma Mad, the true story of her mother's suicide, and Blue Bones, a semi—----autobiography of teenage romance. Golden Blood is also inspired by events in Merlynn's own life, and will see her star alongside the brilliant Charles Wu as recently orphaned siblings finding their way into adulthood amongst the steamy, tropical backstreets of Singapore's criminal underworld. Much of Golden Blood is performed in Singlish - and Merlynn can speak to how she uses language on stage to transport the audience into a different place and time - she touches on that briefly in this video. The show premiered at Griffin Theatre Company in 2022, opens at STC on 17 September, and will also be performed at Melbourne Theatre Company later this year

The kind of English we speak in Singapore has long been a discussion point. Synopsis: The Usual Place host Natasha Ann Zachariah explores contemporary societal choices and youth perspectives. Throwback to 1999 when then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong urged Singaporeans to start using standard English instead of Singlish. These days though, we fiercely defend our use of Singlish and embrace the Singaporean accent, even as we continue to advocate for a strong standard English foundation. How did we get here and what changed in our quest to speak good English? I pose this question to recent university graduate Audrey Wan, 22, whose group's final-year project inspired this episode. Along with Bernadette Toh and Erin Liam, university students from the Nanyang Technological University's Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, their final-year project was titled Eye on English. I wanted to find out what they had found through the interviews they did with various groups and individuals such as a linguistic researcher, teachers, students, a former chief of government communications and a representative for the Speak Good English Movement. Joining Audrey and myself on the show are actress, host and voiceover artist Caitanya Tan, 37, who makes videos on social media teaching her audience how to correctly pronounce some words, and content creator Nicole Chen, 26, who is fiercely proud of her Singaporean accent and Singlish. Highlights (click/tap above): 1:53 Why three university students decided to survey Singapore's standard of English 8:11 Singlish, embraced 13:30 Once upon a time, using Singlish was frowned upon 15:30 The power of code-switching 26:40 Why is it difficult to teach Singlish 30:10 What happens to those who cannot code-switch? 37:55 Is Singapore's brand of English here to stay? Lingthusiasm - A podcast that's enthusiastic about linguistics
Singapore is a small city-state nation with four official languages: English, Mandarin, Tamil, and Malay. Most Singaporeans can also speak a local hybrid variety known as Singlish, which arose from this highly multilingual environment to create something unique to the island. An important part of growing up in Singapore is learning which of your language skills to use in which situation. In this episode, your host Gretchen McCulloch gets enthusiastic about how kids learn language in Singapore with Woon Fei Ting, who's a Research Associate and the Lab Manager at the Brain, Language & Intersensory Perception Lab at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. We talk about how the rich multilingual environment in Singapore led Fei Ting and the lab to do language documentation while trying to figure out how kids learn to talk in Singapore, creating a dictionary of Red Dot Baby Talk (named after how Singapore looks like a red dot on the world map). We also talk about Singlish more generally, some words that Gretchen has learned on her trip, doing research with kids and parents via Zoom, and the role of a lab manager and other lab members in doing linguistic research. ‘Parsetreeforestfire'. Debut book by poet Hamid Roslan, 2019.Great idea to bring both Singlish and English poems. But hopeless execution as both Singlish and English poems are unreadable.I concur with Mr. Roslan when he in an interview says that he is not looking for a readership. Clearly not.Don't waste your time reading this book.
Baby comic Jin Hao Li is still studying at the University of St Andrews, but he already amassed a remarkable win at the legendary Comedy Store Gong Show in London and got through to the final of Chortle Student Comedy Award this year; A fellow veteran comedian described him as "You are a baby who is walking - but you are not supposed to!"The Singaporean comedy prodigy explains in this episode why he does not carry the usual sound of Southern Chinese dialects like many fellow Singaporeans do. Jin Hao talks about code switching and how his Singlish is only revealed with boys back home.Even though he adores Singlish and Singlish humour, he is just unable to perform his surreal style of comedy in the Singlish accent and retains instead this "privileged international student" accent.---------------------------------Follow Jin Hao on InstagramFollow your host Kuan-wen on Instagram and Twitter----------------------------------If you like the episode, please share it and leave a review. Synopsis: This is a special-edition podcast series by The Straits Times to raise greater public awareness of the modern scourge of scams in Singapore and globally. In Singapore, nearly $1 billion has been lost by scam victims since 2016. Mutating and spreading, different types of scams have infiltrated every aspect of our lives, from romance to work. The police are cracking down on offenders. What can you do to protect yourself? In the series' fifth episode, ST's deputy news editor Andre Yeo, crime correspondent David Sun and journalist Jessie Lim speak with Mr Willis Lim, director of the National Cyber Threat Analysis Centre, the research division of the Cyber Security Agency (CSA) that oversees Singapore's cyber security strategy. Mr Lim talks about the ways cyber criminals identify potential victims and new scams the CSA is seeing in 2022. Mr Lim explains why the use of Singlish words, which are not commonly found in most dictionaries, makes it much harder for cyber criminals to crack your passwords. He also provides tips on how Singaporeans can protect themselves from tech support scams. Highlights (click/tap above): 08:49 How cyber criminals look for victims' personal particulars online and on the Dark Web 09:36 Why Mr Willis Lim stopped his mother from throwing his phone bill into the dustbin 11:10 Scams the Cyber Security Agency is seeing in 2022, such as phishing and tech support scams 20:30 How to set a strong password using Singlish and unique passphrases 21:50 How tech support scams work and the steps you can take to protect yourself 28:29 The dollar value of personal data stolen from data breaches Produced by: Andre Yeo (andrey@sph.com.sg), Jessie Lim (ljessie@sph.com.sg), David Sun (davidsun@sph.com.sg), Ernest Luis, Teo Tong Kai and Paxton Pang Edited by: Eden Soh Read ST's Stop Scams articles: https://str.sg/wWt9 • Anti-Scam Hotline: 1800-722-6688 (9am - 5pm); https://www.scamalert.sg/ • National Care Hotline: 1800-202-6868 (8am - 12am); https://ccs.org.sg/nch/ Follow ST's Stop Scams podcast series here: Stop Scams Channel: https://str.sg/wuZB Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/wu3e Spotify: https://str.sg/wuJj SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg/ Websites: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg Andre Yeo's articles: https://str.sg/wWtC David Sun's articles: https://str.sg/wWty Jessie Lim's articles: https://str.sg/wWtF --- Discover ST's special edition podcasts: Singapore's War On Covid: https://str.sg/wuJa The Unsolved Mysteries of South-east Asia: https://str.sg/wuZ2 Stop Scams: https://str.sg/wuZB Invisible Asia: https://str.sg/wuZn --- Discover more ST podcast series: Asian Insider: https://str.sg/JWa7 Green Pulse: https://str.sg/JWaf Health Check: https://str.sg/JWaN In Your Opinion: https://str.sg/w7Qt Your Money & Career: https://str.sg/wB2m SG Extra: https://str.sg/wukR #PopVultures: https://str.sg/JWad ST Sports Talk: https://str.sg/JWRE Bookmark This!: https://str.sg/JWas The Big Story: https://str.sg/wuZe Lunch With Sumiko: https://str.sg/J6hQ Discover BT Podcasts: https://bt.sg/pcPL Follow our shows then, if you like short, practical podcasts! Hello language Lovers! Thank you for joining me for this episode of Speaking Tongues- the podcast in conversation with multilinguals. This week I'm delighted to share this conversation with Marcus where we talked about one of his languages, Singlish! I've been very curious about Singaporean culture and language for a long time now and I'm so happy that Marcus had time to share a bit of his culture with me and all of us. In this episode, we talk about the languages of Singapore and how they mingle and coexist. We talk about the education system and which languages kids learn, code switching and even the various types of Singlish that can be heard in Singapore. Marcus talks about the Good English movement that started in the 2000's by discouraging Singlish but how it has evolved and changed over time. He teaches us some Singlish phrases and words and we even have a slight diversion about the meaning of annual leave, the versatility of the word “ can” and how abbreviations play a big role in Singaporean vernacular. Big thank you to Marcus for this lovely conversation and sharing your languages and culture with all of us.
