In a special edition of my podcast this week, Craig Braddick has interviewed me to talk about growing up in the 1980s with Radio 1 and then with Radio 2 into the 90s and beyond, and how being a contestant on Blockbusters guided me towards my own broadcasting career. I talk about the significance of 1981 – the year I started listening to Radio 1 – and Bucks Fizz winning Eurovision and how, during my schooldays, the charts on a Sunday mattered in the school playground. We also talk about whether the presenters of the day really represented what was going on in the wider world and whether there was a patriarchal streak to broadcasting in that era. I talk about who my favourite presenters were in those days, including the impact of Adrian John who was a presenter in the 1980s who really understood his audience. We talk about my childhood diary entries and what it contains about my radio interests, and how I used to include information about the DJ and the artists who were on Top of the Pops each week. We also talk about DJ handovers both on radio and on TOTP, and of the presenters who perhaps didn't always get on (famously Tony Blackburn and John Peel). We reflect on whether for listeners there is a particular ‘golden era' and whether some of the Radio 1 DJs in the 80s thought that they were more important than the music, and we refer to the way some presenters were delegated. We talk about the way they were caricatured in the Smashie and Nicey mode. We then move on to discuss what happened with Radio 2's evolution in the 1980s and how different the station was in those days from today, and how David Hamilton's perceptions of the station in the 80s and now are diametrically opposite.  I talk about how much I enjoyed the guests on Gloria Hunniford's show on Radio 2 in the afternoons in the early 90s when I was at university. I refer to the line between education and entertainment as being blurred and how those in-depth conversations were an inspiration for my Nostalgia podcast. We talk about Jimmy Young's news and current affairs career and how the iconic JY was perhaps in some ways evoking a different era. We then speak about my experience of appearing as a contestant on Blockbusters and of meeting Bob Holness, and how it came as a surprise to my school peers that I got on the show in the first place. Craig askes me about my radio heroes, and I talk about Ed Stewart and how he died before he had a chance to read what I had written about him in a book I wrote about Christmas. We refer to Stewpot's radio personality and whether he would have fitted a different sort of genre of broadcasting. I reflect, too, on the female presenters who have influenced me, including Sarah Kennedy, and the contrast in broadcasting style with Chris Evans. I tell Craig about how I tend to gravitate to more introverted presenters and how radio and university teaching cross over in unexpected ways. Then, at the end of the interview Craig asks me what in ten years' time I think I am going to be listening to on the radio.

Older people who have reservations about using the internet could be losing almost £1,000 a year by not being computer savvy, according to a new study released today. With nearly half (45%) of Brits over 65 admitting they don't feel completely comfortable going online, and the cost-of-living crisis set to deepen this autumn, new research by Vodafone suggests many older people could face a further squeeze on their living standards due to concerns about using the internet to shop around for the best deals or pay for goods and services.Over 65s who are not fully at ease using the internet could be forking out an extra £97 on clothes, £158 on entertainment services, £184 on travel and missing out on £156 of state entitlements - adding up to a potential loss of £909 per person each year.Importantly, the implications aren't solely financial. The research also highlighted that two-fifths (42%) of pensioners who have reservations about going online feel forgotten when ‘digital first' is the default option while 38% are more likely to feel stressed when services require an online action, such as booking a doctor's appointment via a website. Two-fifths (39%) in this group felt they'd been prevented from improving their digital skills because they didn't know where to look for help. And of those who already felt very comfortable online, more than a quarter (27%) said they would benefit from learning new digital skills. Consumer champion Gloria Hunniford has teamed up with Vodafone UK Foundation and leading charity Independent Age to launch Hi Digital, a programme designed to help the over 65s develop their digital skills, save money, and feel more connected.Hi Digital is an online resource that offers step-by-step advice on digital essentials such as using a search engine, online shopping, accessing news and keeping in touch with family and friends.Other key findings from the study show that half (54%) of those who expressed some doubts about fully embracing the digital world said this was due to concern about scams and online security; not knowing how to fix something if it goes wrong (49%) and finding the pace at which the digital world changes too hard to keep up with (38%).Traditional chores for over 65s could be revolutionised through the internet; however, currently, only a quarter (26%) feel very comfortable claiming benefits digitally and less than a half (45%) say they are very comfortable booking a doctor's appointment or ordering a prescription online. Devon-based Nicky was born in Essex in 1970, Nicky was the granddaughter of a seventh son of a seventh son paternal side from the East end of London. Throughout her childhood, she was surrounded by spirit people, had premonitions, psychic dreams, heard mysterious voices, and received regular visitations. She thought this was the norm and that everybody could do what she did. Due to her career as a Police Detective, her mediumship sadly took a back seat, but always bubbled away in the background consisting of doing readings for people during the evenings from the age of 21. She had no idea about Spiritualist Churches and Development Circles. However on a fateful summer evening three weeks after she had been medically retired in 2003, her whole world was turned around. The spirit world had big plans for her. For no reason whatsoever she decided to attend an evening of clairvoyance at a local hall in Rayleigh. Nicky had never been to one of these nights but felt she had to go. During the demonstration by the mediums, she saw three men reflected in a large window. She looked to see where they were standing in the hall and realized they didn’t exist. One of the men then waved at her and then told her their names and how they had passed. The three spirit people turned out to be relatives of the medium on stage, Nicky was then invited by that medium to join a development circle, two years after this, due to public demand, Nicky had no choice but to become a full time professional working medium. Since 2005 she has traveled throughout Europe and the whole of the UK demonstrating her amazing gift, including touring with Colin Fry and attending shared stage venues with Derek Acorah, Ross Bartlett, Most Haunted, and Stephen Holbrook. It was not long before Nicky started to be asked to do television programs as well as a multitude of radio interviews in the Uk, Australia, US, and Europe. Television has included two series of Angels with Gloria Hunniford, Come dine with Me, Live from Studio Five, A sister’s loss, Sky Documentary, and Street Seer. This week on the damn pod things get off to an appalling start. There's yet more moaning, some wild chat about how to spell the word for a hand-rolled cigarette and Sam wants to know which trees are found in the woodlands of Thailand. The bar is set so low in these opening exchanges that things can only improve, and they do. In a way. James has discovered that scientists have reversed time and it somehow involves racist ‘funnyman' Jim Davidson and also poor John Virgo, whose name it would seem has been sullied by his ‘Big Break' association with the aforementioned massive racist bellweasel, Davidson. All of this high minded science chat is then somewhat undercut when Sam again disputes whether black holes exist and asks what they are actually doing at CERN. Sam then offers Brian Cox a sugar cube and the wheels fall off the podcast entirely…. Then journalist, and the man Gloria Hunniford wishes she was if she wanted to be a male consumer affairs legend instead of a female consumer affairs legend, Harry Wallop shows up. This triumvirate of facially placed mouthholes spew forth on a £15 cup of a coffee, the inefficiencies of cheese, the wonder of Cumbrian Hotpot, the inanity of Quidditch and what it's like writing for the gawddamn Daily Mail. Oh and they talk about moths too. This week's episode is sponsored by the Orion's Belt of the galaxy of wine dropwine.co.uk

Do you remember that awesome bit of 'Empire Strikes Back' when Luke Skywalker is on Hoth, the icy ice nightmare of a planet and he's silly cold so he guts a wampa, that big hairy moose-esque fella, and climbs into them hot guts like a saveloy into a Pukka Pie? Well this week on TickyOff, pretty much exactly the same thing happens but instead of Luke Skywalker, it's Jamie Oliver and instead of Hoth, it's Wyoming and instead of a wampa, it's a big horse and instead of being in 'Empire Strikes Back' it's in a dream Sam had once. Despite that tale for the damn ages there's also somehow time for Prohibition, Bane vs Shia LeBoeuf and haunted pubs. James may be a myth and Sam disappoints his buddy Ash Nute. Then Anna Jones shows, which rhymes kinda, and things improve no end. There's Gloria Hunniford on Anusol, Gino Dicampo on a beach and the aforementioned Jamie in a horse. And if that wasn't just about enough, there's igloo chat, tea with Colin from Radiohead and we learn exactly what 'living room balls' are... Sharing the universal experience of grief through personal letters to lost loved ones is the basis of a book in aid of Our Lady's Hospice. Its editor, Orlaith Carmody came up with the idea as a way of giving back after the incredible end-of-life care given to her late husband Kieran. She was tragically left a widow at the age of 28. In this episode, Orlaith explains how she contacted writers, broadcasters and politicians to ask them to write a personal letter to someone they had lost. The book includes moving letters from Deirdre Purcell, Gloria Hunniford, Mary O'Rourke, Ivan Yates and many others. https://lightupalife.ie/product/without-living-loss/ http://olh.ie/ http://www.dubraybooks.ie/Without-You-Living-With-Loss_9780995479395

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the broadcaster Gloria Hunniford. She's one of our most popular interviewers and presenters and for 40 years has been a warm, but always incisive, figure on our radio and television airwaves. She grew up in Northern Ireland and first of all thought her career lay in singing - as a young girl she would spend several evenings each week singing in local church halls. Although she moved in to broadcasting, those early years lay the foundation for the success and gave her a confidence performing in front of a crowd and a genuine interest in people and their lives. She was among the vanguard of women who tried to have it all - to combine motherhood with a fulfilling career. Her eldest daughter, Caron Keating, followed her into the profession and shared Gloria's ready warmth and wit. But Caron was just 41 when she died from breast cancer and Gloria's moving account of her experiences has now touched tens of thousands of people.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: Miss You Nights by Cliff Richard Book: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy Luxury: Family photographs
