This week on Hormonally Speaking, we have Abby Epstein, the acclaimed American film director and producer best known for her work on the documentaries "The Business of Being Born" "Until the Violence Stops,” and “Weed The People.” Epstein has won several awards for her documentaries, including the Audience Awards at Vancouver's Amnesty International Film Festival and Nashville Film Festival, as well as premiering at Sundance, Tribeca, and SXSW festivals. We discuss her and her business partner Ricki Lake's latest movie, “The Business of Birth Control”, which aims to shed light on the effects of hormonal contraceptives and the need for newer and better options. The documentary was inspired by the book "Sweetening the Pill" by Holly Grigg-Spall. We Cover So Much Including: ✨How the film was not made to promote a specific ideology, despite what some people think ✨That it was difficult to find experts in the field who would speak out against the status quo (but they still found some amazing ones!) ✨The fact that modern medicine has often failed women, leading to poor menstrual health, low body literacy, and high rates of endometriosis, PCOS, fibroids, anxiety, and depression ✨Why there is a need to evolve and develop solutions regarding women's health and bodies, especially in terms of contraception and long-term effects of medications ✨And so much more good stuff! Our conversation was powerful, and one you don't want to miss, especially if you are currently on birth control, or have children that are. You'll also want to see the movie ASAP - especially since March 8 is International Women's Day - which you can stream here. Use code “HORMONALLYSPEAKING” at check out to get half off. ABBY EPSTEIN made her film directing debut at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival with the documentary, V-Day: Until the Violence Stops, featuring Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, and Rosie Perez. The film won the Audience Award at Vancouver's Amnesty International Film Festival and premiered on Lifetime Television, receiving both an Emmy and a Gracie Allen Award. In 2007, she teamed up with Ricki Lake for their widely acclaimed documentary, The Business of Being Born, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released by New Line Cinema/Netflix and broadcast on Showtime. Co-Host Mary Jo West Mary Jo West has been called "the First Lady of TV News in Phoenix." She became the first prime time anchorwoman in Phoenix in 1976, thus opening the door for women who followed in her footsteps. Being a trailblazer in the field was not easy as she dealt with a male co-anchor who saw the newsroom as a “man's domain” and wasn't pleased that she would be sharing his anchor desk. But she was determined to be more than just an arm decoration. She wanted to talk about issues that were vital and to report stories of substance. She was the first woman to go into the Arizona State Prison in Florence and interview inmates for her documentary on sexual assault, for which she won a Rocky Mountain Emmy. Having won the Peabody, two Rocky Mountain Emmys, 13 Arizona Press Club awards, and the national "Gracie Allen Award" from American Women in Radio and TV, she was the first news woman inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame. The City of Phoenix honored her with the Martin Luther King Living the Dream Award for her work fighting discrimination against the mentally ill.

GUESTS:Barbara McClure, Executive Director IMPACT of Southern Arizona 3535 E Hawser Street Tucson, AZ 85739 520-825-0009 / Mobile Phone: 206-915-0919 barbara@impactsoaz.org www.impactsoaz.org SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn | Twitter |Barbara McClure wakes up each morning passionate about going to work at a place that improves lives and inspires futures every day! She has been the Executive Director of a Tucson social service nonprofit called IMPACT of Southern Arizona, for ten years. What is it that keeps you passionate about your role Barbara? Barbara has been a visionary and planner with decades of experience as a small business owner and in nonprofit leadership; her innovative ideas and strategic thinking, along with a talent for bringing the community together, has helped grow IMPACT five-fold in a very short time. Her talents and interests are diverse but all center around helping people, improving the community, bolstering education, building capacity and sustainability, being vocal about the rights and conditions of others, experiencing art, nurturing all inhabitants of your garden, and enjoying life to the fullest. And now Barbara is about to experience another exciting chapter in her life with hosting a brand-new Radio Show Podcast here on the Tucson Business RadioX Network starting in November. IMPACT of Southern Arizona is a 20 - year old social service nonprofit stabilizing families and seniors, and moving people out of poverty. IMPACT's programs are designed to stretch household budgets so earned income can be spent on necessities such as improved housing conditions, fuel to get to work, utilizes, and needed medical attention and prescriptions. Its clients are your neighbors! People come to IMPACT because it is a welcoming place where they are always treated with dignity and respect, and where they find resources, referrals, coaching, and help to attain the skills that can move them forward into self-sufficiency. Barbara grew up in Pasadena CA, moved to Long Beach for college, got married and started our family then moved to Seattle area ten years later. Took our youngest son on an 11-month motorhome trip to get to Tucson – Homeschooled for 10th grade. We vacationed at a rustic cabin when I was growing up, where we had no phone or television; and spent all our time outside fishing, hiking, horseback riding, listening to old radio shows, playing pool, reading comic books from the local small grocer, and using our imaginations all day long. I always admired the superheroes who defended people and cities like Gotham and Metropolis, so when our three boys were born, we named them after familiar character: Colin (Bryce for an overlay of Bruce Wayne, Kent, and Parker. Our first grandchild was born last year, and as in the family tradition, named Logan, after the Wolverine. I used to always tell them they were my superheroes – and they still are today! Barbara loves working with numbers and has always loved math and the organization of things, so accounting seemed perfect, but I soon realized that I if I became a CPA I would have to spend many months inside doing tax returns, and that did not appeal to me as a long-term career! I have a great imagination and enjoy creating things, so thought I should find a better path that might nurture that side of my personality. I was working in the shipping industry in SoCal at the time and fell in love with import and export, so shifted my majors to Marketing and International Business. Those were wonderful fits, and I imagined graduating and moving to the largest port on the planet, in Germany; then, I met my future husband and things took a different turn. A little bit about how Barbara got into Nonprofit work: All along with my husband and I were always involved in nonprofits and community volunteer opportunities, and often said it was too bad we could not make a living doing those things we loved so much. Leadership roles in PTO, Boy Scouts, Historical Societies, Junior League, Elks, Rotary and more. Then when we moved to Tucson I looked for a local opportunity to impact my community. A Board position was about to open at IMPACT, and my local bank branch manager, Peggy Smoot, suggested I would be very passionate about getting involved in the mission work there. I worked in the Food Bank. There are thousands of nonprofits in Tucson. What makes IMPACT Unique is that they bring the community together to stabilize families and move people out of poverty. Our true success lies in partnering with a large number of businesses, agencies, social clubs and other nonprofits. We invest $2.5 million in the community each year, and we do it all with a lean staff of amazing professionals supported by more than 170 volunteer shifts each week! We have put great systems in place to run efficiently, effectively and with a commitment to sustainability and integrity, protecting the community's investment in our work, striving for perfect audits, being innovative, building capacity and most importantly – treating everyone with dignity and respect. We are an award-winning nonprofit with numerous nods to incredible customer service. Our clients are your neighbors… We improve lives and inspire futures of people living in Southern AZ. So, IMPACT is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and you have been at the helm half that time. Share with me the things IMPACT has accomplished over the years, and the things you have planned for this celebratory year. This episode is brought to you by Nature's Path Organics RICKI LAKE Biography From acting and producing, to dancing her way into the hearts of television audiences, Emmy Award-winning television host Ricki Lake is a pop culture icon who has built a career on her graciously candid sensibility and her authentic, relatable nature. In recent years, she has channeled her nurturing spirit and drive for social change into passion projects that are altering the way society views birth, breastfeeding, childhood obesity and birth control. Lake’s legacy and perhaps her greatest love is her role as independent filmmaker. Her award-winning, critically acclaimed documentary “The Business of Being Born” debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007 and is often hailed as the “must see” film among mothers-to-be “I was profoundly affected by the births of my two sons in ways I never anticipated,” Lake comments. “It can be one of the most empowering experiences in a woman’s life. But part of that involves having options and being the decision-maker in what you want that experience to be.” Lake and creative partner Abby Epstein co-wrote the book, “Your Best Birth” and released “More Business of Being Born” a four-part DVD series featuring celebrities sharing their birth stories, as well as an in-depth discussion on the birth process. “The Business of Being Born” franchise includes a thirty-minute classroom edition, which has screened at hundreds of schools all over the country. Under their joint venture BOBB Films, Epstein and Lake served as Executive Producers of the 2014 documentary “Breastmilk” and the upcoming, “The Mama Sherpas.” BOBB Films is also in production on two new feature documentaries: “Weed the People” and “Sweetening the Pill.” Lake teamed up with All Stride and John Monaco, MD for her book “Too Big to be Small,” which examines childhood obesity as an epidemic, but also gives a realistic approach to helping kids lose weight. Lake shares her personal struggles as an overweight child and her path to discovering her life purpose and happiness. The world first met Lake in 1988 as Tracy Turnblad in John Waters’ film “Hairspray.” Her additional film credits include “Cry-Baby,” “Serial Mom,” “Working Girl,” “Last Exit to Brooklyn,” and “Mrs. Winterbourne.” Television credits include “Babycakes,” “China Beach,” “The King of Queens,” “Matters of Life & Dating,” and “Loving Leah.” More recently, Ricki made a guest appearance on her favorite new show, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” At the age of 24, Lake became one of the youngest daily talk show hosts in history with the debut of “The Ricki Lake Show.” After 11 successful seasons, “The Ricki Lake Show” wrapped in 2005 but returned in 2012, garnering Lake the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host. Lake also competed on the 13th season of “Dancing with the Stars,” where she made it to the finals with partner and three-time champion Derek Hough. Lake has become an integral figure in the birthing community, having served for many years on the board of Choices in Childbirth, a nonprofit organization that strives to improve maternity care all over the world. In addition, she is a strong supporter of gay and lesbian rights working with various organizations such as The Trevor Project. Lake is also the proud mother of 19-year-old Milo and 15-year-old Owen. “They are both creative, compassionate and independent thinkers,” Lake comments. “Motherhood is the most challenging and the most rewarding part of my life.” ABBY EPSTEIN has been producing and directing documentaries for over ten years with her partner, Ricki Lake. Hanna Polak, a Polish director and producer, has the stamina and guts that most filmmakers would envy. And now audiences at film festivals around the world are experiencing her dedication through “Something Better To Come,” a documentary that Hanna shot over the span of 14 years. The documentary follows the lives of Russians living in a massive garbage dump, located 12 miles from the center of Moscow. Hanna filmed many people living in the garbage dump, but one person in particular stood out: a young girl named Yula. We watch Yula grow up on-screen, experimenting with hair dye and makeup, foraging for food and shelter, as well as witnessing some firsts: trying her chances with alcohol, cigarettes and young love. Hanna previously directed the short film, “The Children of Leningradsky,” which explores the lives of homeless children living in Moscow train stations. The film received an Oscar nomination, an International Documentary Association Award for Best Documentary, two Emmy nominations, and the Gracie Allen Award, given by Women in Radio and Television. But there are many moments when Hanna puts down her camera and serves as an activist. In 1997, as part of her work in Russia, she founded and later collaborated with Active Child Aid to help support the children of Russia and in 2006 she was awarded the prestigious Golden Heart Award. Hanna shares the challenges of shooting and editing a film for 14 years, as well as a special memory with documentary pioneer, Ricky Leacock. Doc fans: this episode is not to be missed. Make a phone call, study a journal, talk to one in the business, make a planned objective happen, etc. To this day, I keep my SIZZLE journal close - and it’s paying off. Start SIZZLING today.
