Daisy Miller is an 1878 novella by Henry James. It portrays the confused courtship of the eponymous American girl by Winterbourne, a compatriot of hers with much more sophistication. His pursuit of her is hampered by her own flirtatiousness, which is frowned upon by the other expatriates they meet in Switzerland and Italy. Her lack of understanding of the social mores of the society she so desperately wishes to enter ultimately leads to tragedy. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/librivox1/support

We begin by talking about where Brandon works and a television program called [The Bear], cocaine, [Uwe Boll], stupid YouTube things, Cinderella porn and foot juices. Jenn has been listening to a podcast about the Duggar family where a couple re-watches the shows that feature the Duggar family and then they talk about the Duggar family while they're watching the show about the Duggar family and Katie tells all about a new docu-series starring R.E.M. - about the Duggar family. Jenn and Katie had an exciting camping weekend where Katie wanted to (and got to) go ON A BOAT! This week's list is [Bad Movies Everyone Should Watch]. Brandon and Edward talk about the ancient origin of the Bubbles' Mushrooms podcast and some of their ideas about top 10 lists and the Princess Diaries. The Incredible Hulk loves Lees Famous Recipe Chicken, Sheryl Lee, Ang Lee, Lee High School and Bruce Lee. Edward's favorite movie is [Cool As Ice] or [Spice World]. Jenn tells us all about Rex Manning Day and Katie's big pick is, of course, The Hugga Bunch Movie (or Mrs. Winterbourne, whatever.) We rip through some other horrible favorites with fighter jets, abandoned trademarks, wiping with pine cones, being Chipwrecked and... Speed Racer? What are your favorite stupid movies? Ganador de varios premios, el Oscar aún se le resiste, aunque estuvo nominado en un par de ocasiones por “Sentido y sensibilidad” y “Hamlet”. on todays story were going to go back to 1626, the place pond square in highgate london , which at the time was named pond square because of its two, man made ponds that was dug out by a hermit in the 14th century .but it was in 1626 that sir francis bacon , thethe english philosopher ,, and politician was riding through pond square in a horse drawn carraige ,accompanied by his friend Dr. Winterbourne it was a bitterly cold day in early april , and the snow lay thick upon the ground , during the journey the two men had been discussing if it was possible to preserve food other than using the salting method , sir fransis bacon was probably looking down at the brilliant white snow , and rubbing his hands together trying to keep himself warm , when all of a sudden , he had the crazy idea , that maybe food preserved in really cold conditions could stop it from spoiling .of course we know now that freezing food is a reliable way of preserving it ,but back then it was unheard of .and so to test the theory fransis bacon , went to a poor womans house that was at the bottom of high gate and purchase a chicken from her , who also slaughtered , gutted and plucked the unfortunate experimental bird.sir fransis bacon then went about packing the prepared chicken with snow , then placed it in a sack and then buried it in more snow , and voila , there you have the very first frozen chicken.unfortunatley for sir fransis bacon , whilst digging in the freezing cold conditions packing the chicken in the snow , he came down with a severe chill , and he was in no fit state to actually make it back to his own lodgings and was kindly alowed to sleep at Arundel House , in highgate ,un fortunatley the bed he was placed into hadnt been slept in for over a year and was damp and his chill quickly turned into pneumonia , and he died on the 9th of april 1626 only days after his experiment .but that wasnt the end of the story , you see ever since , through out the years , there have been many sightings of a distressed posibly phantom that likes to lurk around the area of pond square absolutley terrifing unlucky passers by who just so happen to lock eyes on the haunting appoirition ,but the ghost that haunts pond square isnt that of sir fransis bacon.please consider leaving a review, thank youhere is the link to the instagram post , come and share your thoughtshttps://www.instagram.com/p/Co...www.bizarrepodcast.com

Book Vs. Movie: Rear WindowThe 1942 Short Story Vs. the 1954 Classic FilmThe Margos are swooning throughout this episode for one of the greatest movies of all time, adapted from a short story by a very interesting (and prolific) author. Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window is one of his finest works based on the short story; It Had to be Murder by Cornell Woolrich. Woolrich is considered one of his generation's best mystery/suspense writers, with dozens of titles making it to movie adaptations, including The Bride Wore Black, Night Had a Thousand Eyes, Mrs. Winterbourne, and Original Sun. He was so proficient as a writer of novels, screenplays, and short stories he had two noms de plumes--William Irish & George Hopley. A lonely man (he once dedicated a book to his hotel room), when he passed in 1968, he left his work to his alma mater Columbia University which eventually helped change the copyright laws. (See Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, 1998.)The story's bones are the same as the film: an injured man stuck in his apartment becomes a “peeping tom,” spying on his neighbors and being grumpy to “Sam,” who is paid to help him. Our protagonist believes he has witnessed a murder across the street and is trying to get the police to take him seriously. The 1954 adaptation was shot on the Paramount Studio lot with a full-sized apartment building courtyard to mimic the real thing in Greenwich Village. James Stewart plays LB “Jeff” Jeffries, a photojournalist who is home recovering from a broken leg. Jeff must wear a cast for one more week before returning to his adventurous life. He passes the time by snooping on his neighbors across the courtyard. Grace Kelly plays his impossible beautiful girlfriend from the upper crust society who is trying to get a commitment from Jeff. (He negs her constantly, which makes ZERO sense!) Jeff wants to see Lisa be more adventurous when he thinks he witnesses a murder across the courtyard. Thelma Ritter plays his nurse Stella, and the trio becomes detectives trying to figure out a sweaty salesman played by Raymond Burr (pre-Perry Mason) who may have made his wife disappear--permanently. This film lost out to many major awards to On the Waterfront (it was a contender!) However, time has turned it into a masterclass of direction, sound, editing, acting, and writing. I recently attended a film appreciation class with Dale Pollock, called Senior Moments. And yes, as the name suggests, it was a look into how the film industry, Hollywood in particular, has treated aging. Not surprisingly it has not done a stellar job. When I asked Dale to tell me more about how the industry has changed, he said we've come a long way from depicting older characters as simply being the crazy old biddy or the wise decrepit grandfather. Especially when you look at a film like “Good Luck to you Leo Grande,” with Emma Thompson. He believes that advances in science and technology with regards aging will inform filmmaking and stories. When I ask Dale if there is anything that actors, filmmakers, and the industry in general can do to improve accurate and authentic representation of older characters, he points to three main things. The first is, as actors we must embrace our older selves. His second point is that directors, who are typically ‘risk averse', need to be more willing to cast 50-year-old characters who actually look 50. He also says those teaching in the many film schools around the country have to continue to move towards a more generous view of aging. He says, only then will filmmakers fully realize the dramatic and comedic potential of aging.  Dale M. Pollock received a BA in Anthropology from Brandeis University in 1972 and MS in Communications from San Jose State University. In 1977, he became the head film critic for the Daily Variety until he was hired by the Los Angeles Times to be their chief entertainment correspondent.  He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in the early 1980s and wrote Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas in 1984, which has sold more than 150,000 copies and remains in print. In 1985, Pollock joined David Geffen's company as a development executive, where he discovered the scripts for Beetlejuice, The Burbs and Universal Soldier.  He joined A&M Films as vice president in charge of production, and was named president in 1990, producing such films as The Beast, The Mighty Quinn, A Midnight Clear and Mrs. Winterbourne. Pollock ran his own film company Peak Productions for 10 years, producing the box office hit Set It Off.   He co-founded the producing program at the American Film Institute in 1995. In 1999 he became Dean of the School of Filmmaking at the (then) North Carolina School of the Arts, stepping down in 2006 to become Professor of Cinema Studies. He was awarded Emeritus status in 2019 and served as Interim Dean for nine months in 2021. Pollock was awarded an Endowed Professorship in Film in his name at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts School of Filmmaking and is the 2016 recipient of the UNC Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence. He also received the 2020 Arts Council of Winston Salem's Annual Award, its highest honor. Pollock's first work of fiction, Chopped: A Novel will be published in February 2023, and he is at work on a book about how Hollywood has treated aging in the movies. Learn more about Dale Pollockhttps://www.imdb.com/name/nm0689645/https://dalempollock.com If you want to chat or ask questions about the episode go to FB: https://www.facebook.com/tarmeydanielle/and visit the group site. Follow me on: IG: @tarmeydanielle Twitter: @TarmeyDanielle

We're celebrating Frasuary with Diana's pick Mrs. Winterbourne (1996). She quickly points out this movie is While You Were Sleeping meets the '90s Sabrina remake. Ryan had to hold her hand as she dealt with the rewatch cringe. Fortunately Brenda Fraser's charm validates her choice. Connie, unwed and pregnant, is heading to Boston by train when she meets wealthy newlyweds Hugh and Patricia. The train crashes, and when Connie comes to in the hospital, she is mistaken for Patricia, who died in the crash with Hugh. Glyn opens this episode of the podcast with the announcement that he has moved the Hidden Wiltshire Headquarters from Trowbridge. Fearing that HQ had been relocated to Liverpool, Paul's initial shock was eased by the news that HQ is now at Heywood House on Capps Lane just outside Westbury! And just as Paul was left wondering where Glyn had got what was probably a five million quid asking price from, Glyn stated that in fact he was simply renting a desk in what is serviced office accommodation. From a £5m mansion to a lone desk in 30 seconds… However, this episode of the podcast focuses on a blog Paul posted on the Hidden Wiltshire website on 23 January 2021 about the River Till. A blog re-printed in the Tilshead Newsletter in March 2021. Fame at last!  But first we talk about the last two weeks in Wiltshire, one day of which Paul spent in the Badlands of Gloucestershire. The excitement is building for Hidden Wiltshire's second book which this time is a collaborative effort between Glyn and Paul. With a fair wind and favourable conditions in Customs (since the book is being printed in the Netherlands) the book will be launched on 10 December at a surprise and secret venue. So it should be available just in time for Christmas. It's been an all-consuming effort but having seen a proof copy, which required a fair few tweaks, we're really excited about the release. Meanwhile Paul's had some interesting times of late working for Natural England. It's hoped the volunteers can work more independently on the local nature reserves in future which involves being trained and certified for all manner of tasks. The Government does like its health and safety courses. Paul spent a day last week near Cirencester on a 4x4 driving course where he learned that he had driven the nature reserve's old Landrover Defender all the way from Parsonage Down to Cirencester with the differential lock engaged. Which is not a good thing. It's no wonder he struggled to go round corners. And whilst working at the reserve this week the Defender was found to be abandoned in the farmyard. Broken! But not Paul's fault we hasten to add. Next step – tractor driving training. Still at Parsonage Down the volunteer team spent one day this week coppicing a small wood that provides shelter to the farm. It really highlighted the point we've made in a couple of podcasts, and in particular the one entitled Wiltshire Clumps, that woodland needs to be managed in the light of climate change and other challenges such as ash dieback. It was quite a shock to see how many trees in this small copse were dead or dying. Beech, ash, elder, hawthorn – all were dying back. Whilst some dead wood can be left to provide a rich habitat, much had to be cleared to allow the light to penetrate to the woodland floor. The area will we re-populated with a more diverse species of native tree which will provide a beautiful wood for future generations to enjoy. We then move on to the main subject – the River Till. This quintessential chalk winterbourne rises in Tilshead and flows all the way to Stapleford where it joins the Wylye. Many people quite understandably assume that Tilshead takes its name from the river. But this is not the case. The name is actually derived from "Theodwulf's hide”. The name Tilshead came into use in the 16th century. The river was called the Winterbourne until around the start of the 20th century, when the name River Till began to be used. Locally the river was also referred to as Waterlake, a name which subsists today in the form of Waterlake Lane in Orcheston. During the podcast we talk about the inevitable rich history that surrounds the Till. From the three Neolithic long barrows on the hill above Tilshead which are orientated along the lines of the river's re-entrants, to the story of the Orcheston grass that once grew in the water meadows in that village at a rate of 17 – 18 feet a year, to the Bronze and Iron Age round barrow cemetery of The Coniger between Shrewton and Winterbourne Stoke (where Roman pottery has also been found) to medieval Stapleford Castle, once the home of Jane Seymour's father. (Henry VIII's third wife, not the actress!) We also had a fairly monumental political rant! It's been widely reported that Wessex Water has been allowing raw sewage to enter the Till for several years – both at Orcheston and from the sewage treatment plant at Shrewton. According to The Times between July 2019 and June 2020 the Shrewton treatment works operated by Wessex Water spilt untreated sewage into the River Till for 5,110 hours, or more than seven months.  Entreaties to Wessex Water, the Environment Agency and Natural England have all failed to resolve the issue. Meanwhile the water meadow next to Waterlake Lane in Orcheston, where the famed grass once grew, is virtually sterile. And during the spring of this year Paul saw young children playing in the stream just 50 metres below the sewage treatment works outfall. Is it any wonder that otters, water voles and brown trout are no longer or rarely seen in Shrewton? A truly disgraceful situation which the Government's new Bill does little to remedy. There is no map to follow along with this episode of the podcast. Paul pieced together the blog following two day long walks – one between Shrewton and Tilshead (which included Orcheston) and the other between Shrewton and Stapleford which can be extended to make a long day's walk taking in the hills either side of the Till valley that includes the views from Druids Lodge and returning via Yarnbury Castle and the ancient ridgeway across the Plain. A long point to point walk could easily be put together from Tilshead' where the river rises' to its end at Stapleford. Once for the longer days of summer. Then on to the wrap up: Steve Dixon's piece leading to our main subject is entitled “When Swallows Rise”. We've used it before but as Paul has spent many happy hours watching swallows dart around the Till just above the remains of the sluice gates below The Coniger, it seemed appropriate. As ever the piece in the introduction and at the end of the podcast is entitled “The Holloway”. Don't forget to subscribe to the Hidden Wiltshire Newsletter from the website. Bill Myers Inspires  I posted a simple meditation a couple days ago on Facebook "Pause. Reflect. RIP Mr. George Floyd," on the date of his killing one year later. The comments that came from my nearly 5000 Facebook friends regarding George Floyd began with "Career criminal, who committed suicide." from a white, retired Indianapolis Police Officer. The comments and debate that followed inspired me to examine these comments from my friend more closely, while pondering the question of where are we as individuals and a nation one year after George Floyd's murder? This week we are headed to Boyds, Maryland to investigate the Winderbourne Mansion.  Now, I am saying Winderbourne because that's what everyone says and it sounds enchanting and like something from a Neil Gaman novel…but through my research I have my suspicions it's actually supposed to be pronounced Winder-bourne…even if it doesn't quite roll off the tongue or make any phonetical sense whatsoever.  You'll have to let me know what you think.  This legend is interesting, and I thought it had to be true since one of my sources is a government source but – spoiler – I don't think it is.  This mansion has seen its fair share of tragedy and has been left abandoned for well over a decade.  It was on the real estate market for probably just as long, but now it seems it is no longer for sale, so its future is uncertain, as is its past.  Join me now to learn the alleged history of our Windy…or Windy…mansion.     Winderbourne Mansion was built in 1884 at the behest of Enoch and Mary Totten.  The Tottens lived in Washington DC but wished for a summer home to escape the hustle, bustle, and stifling heat of the city.  The couple decided on a plot of land near Little Seneca Creek, where the B&O railroad line gently curved around the property on two sides.  Access to the parcel of land was from Clopper Road, which the Tottens also purchased.  Eventually, the railroad expanded from a single track to a double track and needed to cut off the road.  The Tottens and the railroad came to a compromise, each paying half the cost of a bridge that went over the track and the railroad agreed to maintain the bridge in perpetuity. Enoch Totten did well for himself, as he was a prominent lawyer in DC and was a Civil War Veteran…he even managed to survive being shot four times at the Battle of Spotslyvania Court House…in fact, one of these shots may have been his own fault as a projectile bounced off of his sabre and hit his right hand.  Regardless of this strange mishap and his career as a lawyer – the capital for the construction of Winderbourne mansion came from his wife, Mary. Mary was the daughter of a Wisconsin senator named Timothy Howe who was the cousin and heir to the massive fortune of Elias Howe, the inventor of the Bobbin-Winder.  This device is what inevitably inspired the name of Winderbourne. When Winderbourne was completed it was painted a pale pink with dark rose trim and shutters of a deep plum – a vibrant contrast to its current pallid, moss-covered facade.  It's architecture was unique, sporting a triangular fireplace, a room suspended above the foyer, and hidden rain spouts that directed water to an underground cistern. The Tottens hosted elaborate formal affairs on their lawn, landscaped with rare and exotic plants imported from around the world.  And while Winderbourne acted as the Totten's summer home, it was staffed all year long, with increased staff during their stay. In addition to the parties on their lawn, they also hosted extravagant dinner events.  However, the food was never set upon the table; instead maids would carry around silver platters and bowls and served those who were seated at the table.  Sadly, the Totten's life was soon struck by tragedy.  The three Totten children contracted typhoid fever from drinking contaminated water.  Two of the children survived, while one of their sons died from the grisly disease. This tragedy soured the Totten's love of the Winderbourne property.  However, they kept the property and it stayed in the family.  One of the Totten daughter's, Edith, inspired by her tragic childhood experience became a physician and came into ownership of Winderbourne sometime before 1915.  She did not marry but adopted a daughter. The little girl loved Winderbourne, exploring its every nook and cranny, running through its magic halls that seemed to never end.  One of her favourite activities was to slide down the bannister of the massive staircase that led to the foyer.  However, one day when she slid down the bannister as always, she gained a little bit too much speed, lost control, flew off, and fell to her death. The curved railroad track around the home was straightened and the bridge that was supposed to have been maintained by the railroad company was demolished.  Leaving the Tottens with no access to their home.  The Tottens took the case to court and the home and surrounding property was sold off to the railroad. Not long after, Edith Totten dropped dead unexpectedly after giving a lecture at John Hopkins University at only 48 years old. Winderbourne Mansion was repurchased by the Pickrell family in 1929.  Edward and Beulah Pickrell raised their two sons, Edward Jr. and Paxton on the property.  Both Edward and Beulah passed away, leaving the property to Edward in their will.  During Edward Jr.'s ownership the house began to fall into disrepair, and he eventually passed away in 2004, leaving the responsibility of the quickly decaying property to Paxton. To this day the house remains abandoned.  Vines and the surrounding vegetation have completely engulfed the property.  Blending in more and more with Black Hills regional park that sits against the estate.  Winderbourne Mansion, once elegantly groomed, now appears like a map from a post-apocalyptic video game with several old muscle cars left abandoned in the yard and furniture, clothes, books, and magazines still left inside.  While the house has decayed and succumbed to the elements, the ghosts of its past still roam its halls in opulence; ignorant to the passing of time and the erosion of their beloved mansion.   This story continues to befuddle me.  I've spent so much time trying to confirm parts of this story, that as of now seem impossible.  Let's see…where should we start?  There are a few articles on this house and its history, they all seem to refer back to an article from the Washington Post.  I dug a little deeper and hit the jackpot!  Or what I thought was the jackpot: a 1978 report on the home's history available through Maryland's government website.  It is an ACHS summary form, I cannot figure out what it stands for but I'm guessing it's a historical site or historical society. This form seems legitimate, I had no reason to doubt it.  It compiles the history and it seems this is where most of the information available on the home and the Tottens stems from. When I started doing my own research though…I found some conflicting information.  All sources say that Enoch and Mary Totten had three children and that they lost a son to typhoid fever after all the children fell ill after drinking some contaminated drinking water at Winderbourne.  The historic report also details this while also saying that all drinking water there was boiled prior to use and that the cisterns that collected the water were regularly cleaned.  Still, there is always room for error, this is not what I found strange. Instead, I found that the Tottens had four children: Edith, Howe, Gerald, and Alice.  Even stranger still only one of them died…a daughter…but before the house was ever built.  Alice Crosby Totten died at the age of 16 on October 6, 1881 according to Washington D.C.'s Evening Critic and her tombstone.  Both of the Totten sons outlived Edith by decades and died in their seventies. Now, I did find the obituary for Edith Totten.  Which…goes to show the stupidity of machine reading or people, I haven't decided.  Some databases let you “clip” stories for collections and you can add information.  For whatever reason her one obituary in the Richmond Times Dispatch was clipped with her name being recorded as “Edith Tettea Saeeamba” while her siblings names' were recorded accurately.  This happened because of the title: Lecturer Dies: Dr. Edith Totten Succumbs at John Hopkins.  I'm assuming this is yet another OCR issue but luckily the search picked up Edith and the Totten of her brothers and I was able to locate it.  But I digress.  Edith passed away after she completed a lecture on “Imagination and Thought” of a cerebral hemorrhage.  So it appears this story is true. I was not able to find any record of her adopted daughter but it is entirely possible it happened.  I am really curious about Edith's story as she never married, inherited Winderbourne, and became a doctor and professor at John Hopkins.  For a woman produced of the Victorian age I find that so fascinating and impressive.  However, there isn't too much on her.  I was also surprised there were no pre-researched family trees for the family.  Her father, mother, and brothers all had some historical significance and I found it odd. The name Winderbourne or Winderbourne or Winterbourne sounded so familiar to me and I found out that is because one of Howe Totten founded Winderbourne Kennels who bred Great Danes.  Now you're probably like…why…does that make the name familiar to you?  For those of you who don't know I used to serve as the librarian for the American Kennel Club; and a lot of my time was spent researching pedigrees or dog genealogy for various researchers as well as digitizing and archiving old photographs.  I spent a good time with Great Danes and yes, this was a prominent kennel name I had seen time and time again!  They bred a lot of champions and if I'm not mistaken were one of the more foundational kennels for the breed.   I just always thought it was pronounced Winderbourne.  So the more you know!  It really is a small, small world.  But I digress!  Enough about dogs. So how did all this information about the family's three children and a son dying get so…wrong?  I looked into the report a little deeper.  All the stories about the Totten family tragedies were not from written record but were instead from a 1978 personal interview with a Hershey Ayton.  While I love oral histories and I think they're great for personal experiences, preserving indigenous languages, and folklore…I do not believe they're great for accurately recording events before your lifetime from another family.  Now, perhaps Ayton was some type of authority on the subject and they have information we're not privy to…that cannot be known.  But, insofar as the documents available to me, since I cannot access a lot of paper records without visiting institutions in Maryland, it doesn't seem like their accounts are wholly accurate.  Alice Totten surely died very young but it was before the home was built and she was not, to my knowledge, a son. Another fascinating facet of this story is how Mary Totten got her money.  I won't go into it but Elias Howe does not get enough credit in these news stories.  Elias Howe while he was not the inventor of the sewing machine per say, he is the one that perfected it, creating the lockstitch sewing machine.  He was awarded the first patent for the device in 1846.  His machine included the three foundational mechanisms of modern sewing machines: a needle with the eye at the point instead of the back, an automatic feed, and a shuttle beneath the fabric to form the lock stitch. However, despite being awarded the patent he could not find investors in the United States and so went to England.  There were some business disputes and so despite selling the machine, he did not make any money.  Upon his return to the United States he found that many other entrepreneurs were selling and manufacturing sewing machines using his methods.  Most famously, he became embroiled, or maybe we'll say embroidered, in a court case lasting from 1849 to 1854 with none other than Isaac Singer of Singer machine fame.  Isaac Singer and Walter Hunt had perfected a version of Elias Howe's machine and were selling it with the exact lockstitch that Howe had invented and patented.  In the end, Howe won the lawsuit and gained a rather amazing deal in the process: he was able to collect royalties on all lockstitch sewing machines sold by not only Singer, but a number of other manufacturers as well.  This is how the Howe's became filthy, filthy rich.  Howe also patented the zipper, or as he called it, “automatic continuous clothing closure” which doesn't have the same ring to it.  He never pursued it seriously so he is not credited with its creation. Elias Howe died at age 48 of a massive blood clot in 1867.  So how did Mary Howe Totten receive his fortune?  Elias' first wife died, leaving him no children and Howe's brothers also died.  While Elias' did remarry, his cousin, Timothy Howe, Mary's father, became the heir to the fortune, which is eventually passed down to Mary herself.  Very convoluted, very confusing.  But extremely interesting nonetheless. Insofar as the ghosts of the mansion…if there are any…you could technically visit yourself.  But I do not recommend it, at least physically speaking.  It is still private property as Paxton Pickrell has been trying to sell it since 2004.  It was originally listed at 2 million dollars, dropping to 1.5, and then to 895,000.  It never sold.  It's very tragic since it is such a unique home, described by the Maryland historical document as “the only grand and elegant structure in the simple rural town of Boyds”  However, elegant it is no longer.  The gardens are overgrown, with some of the rare vegetation from the Totten's exotic gardens still flourishing.  Many people still come to the property, trespassing, I may add.  But lucky for you, if you're interested you can find many urban explorers who have recorded their visits.  Some of their personalities are grating while others are not, but you can explore the whole of the property through these videos.  Some people come because it's creepy, strangely many people visit for the abandoned muscle cars on the lawn.  Regardless of their motivations, it surely looks quite haunted…but I have not been able to locate any tales of real ghost sightings or encounters.  The real horror here is the home's history…or…the urban legend of it, rather. However, Paxton Pickrell, who grew up in the house said “That place to me was just a wonderful home” and was rather perturbed when the home was first published on a list of “the spookiest, creepiest old houses for sale in America” on a real estate website.  The house is dilapidated, the local government has purchased all the land surrounding it.  According to Pickrell, the county has been trying to take the 9 acres of the property and that his defiance in selling it is standing in the way of progress.  I stand with Pickrell on this one.  While the property itself may not be haunted, what remains is a skeleton of the past.  Once a place of grandeur and wealth, it sits covered in vines looking more like the home of the Addams family or the set of a Scooby Doo cartoon.  Daring urban explorers frequent the site to catch a glimpse into the past, and I recommend checking it out.  I will post some images of its current state on the podcast Instagram, @CrimesAndWitchDemeanors, but I also recommend checking out some of the videos.  It's eerie how many objects are still left in the house. But that is all for today's episode.  Please, if you enjoy the podcast, tell a friend or two, force them into listening by any means necessary.  Leave a review if you're particularly cool.  And until next time; don't slide down the bannister, adamantly defend your patents, and of course, stay curious, and stay spooky.  Bye~

In our inaugural episode, join our tour guides as we explore the nitty-gritty of the most muggle location ever: Privet Drive! Our hosts Will Hagrid, Greta Granger, Alex Scamander, and Nicholas Longbottom strive to discover the real location – and there are a few contenders! We talk about where the filming was done (several spots, actually!), and one or two behind the scenes stories. Did you know Privet was a type of plant? And did JK Rowling really base Privet Drive on her house in Winterbourne, where she lived when she was little? Is Dursley really as boring as it was made out to be? And what is Potter or Notter? All these questions – plus some logistical conundrums will be explored in a mere 30 minutes! So come and visit suburbia with us, join us at the start of Harry’s journey, and subscribe to keep following our magical journey through the muggle and wizarding world of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter!

15 minutes with Emma Nicholson, Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, a former MP and MEP and a life peer since 1997. She has worked in the Middle East for many years, with a particular interest in countering cruelty and extremism. She is the Chair of the AMAR Foundation, which helps to rebuild and improve the lives of disadvantaged communities in war-torn areas, and President of the Iraq Britain Business Council (IBBC), which builds business links with Iraw, by facilitating trade investment, human resources support, training and technology transfer. In this podcast, Baroness Nicholson speaks to Helen Taylor, our Press & Communications Officer, about regional disparities in community cohesion, the forces that make communities more divisive, and Britain since the Brexit referendum. She calls for a greater focus on debating skills, the arts and religious teaching in schools, the importance of knowing how to argue effectively, and the importance of schools and local businesses working together. She also describes her involvement in bringing the IBBC to Cumberland Lodge, and the role of the private sector in helping to rebuild democracy in war-torn countries. This recording was made in January 2017, as part of a series of podcasts to celebrate our 70th anniversary as an educational foundation.

Today I am joined by avid reader and fan of all things lesfic, Beni Gee - moderator of lesbian audiobook group on facebook, and moderator of the yahoo group the virtual living room   We are talking UK lesfic and books we really, really loved. Criteria: Written by UK based author, main character is from the UK.   Sheena’s Picks 1 Fingersmith by Sarah Waters  London in 1862 – Sue Trinder is an orphan who grows up among petty thieves (fingersmiths).  Maud is born into a wealthy family. She works with her uncle on documenting his collection of books.  One evening Gentleman enlists Sue’s help and proposes a scam to get hold of Maud’s money. Sue is to play Maud’s maid and help her realise that she is in love her painting teacher, Gentleman.  Gentleman will then propose to Maude, they will marry and he will be rich.  But, things are not as they seem. The novel is full of twists and turns that keep you guessing.  This book crossed into mainstream and managed to keep excellent reviews Full review here    2 Courting The Countess by Jenny Frame  The story is about Henrietta “Harry” Knight and Annie Brannigan. Harry loves her job as a professor of Archeology at Cambridge University and when her father dies and she becomes Countess of Axedale she is pulled away from her beloved career to fulfil a promise she made to her grandfather. The promise was that she would restore Axedale Hall to its former state of glory.  Harry is in need of a housekeeper to help her manage the house while she is overseeing the renovations on the property. Enter Annie, housekeeper extraordinaire  and mother to Riley a sweet, curious, girl who is utterly fascinated by history.  Harry doesn’t believe in true love. She saw her mother destroyed by her father’s cruelty and feels a deep sense of abandonment because her mother left when she was a little girl.  Annie wants to find a forever home for her and Riley. She wants a place to call her own so that she doesn’t have to keep dragging her daughter from post to post.  The question is, will Harry and Annie be able to put their own fears and histories aside to see what is really between them?  Two reviewer favorite badges - Sheena and Tara and we did it as a book club read Read full review here    3 Lost In The Starlight by Kiki Archer  This is the story of two women from very different backgrounds. On the one hand you have singing superstar, Honey Diamond and on the other hand you have the owner of a popular gossip website, Meg.  Honey is a sweet, naive and over protected superstar. As a result she has lived an idealistic, yet sheltered life and has never really had to ask the tough questions or handle giving difficult answers even though she has been famous for most of her life and is no stranger to the spotlight.  One day Honey opens a gossip website and sees that there is speculation on whether or not she is a lesbian. She has never had to formally come out because no one has ever actually asked her about her sexuality and she cannot understand why her mother is so against her publicly announcing that she is, in fact, a lesbian.  Meg is smitten with Honey and feels it deeply that Honey hasn’t come out to the public. She has no idea the stir she causes when she writes a piece for her website about Honey being a lesbian and little does she know this will lead to a life changing event for both women.  Lost In The Starlight is an absolutely charming, hilarious and gorgeous story or two women from different backgrounds learning that life is a little more complicated than they thought when it comes to love and secrets.  This book was done as a book club read  Read the full review here    4 It Had To Be You by Clare Lydon  Georgia and Milly are in a relationship and Milly wants Georgia to come home with her for Christmas. Her hands are bound and she is not wearing much clothing. Sanne is part of the team to investigate the kidnapping while Meg tries to keep the woman alive at the hospital.  When the woman wakes up and begins to speak what she says turns Sanne’s world on its head. Only the one woman was hiding something from the other.  I don’t want to give too much of the story away because it will ruin some of the fun.  Read the full review here    7 A Walk into Darkness by Jade Winters  Twenty-five years after a young girl goes missing from her home in South-East England, most have given up hope of ever finding closure. When the delectable Tasha comes onto the scene, both women struggle to find a balance between their responsibilities and the undeniable chemistry behind their growing friendship.   A story of murder, intrigue and the twisting path of life and love.    8 Nightingale by Andrea Bramhall  When Charlie Porter meets Hazaar Alim her first year of university, she's instantly smitten. Hazaar has it all: beauty, talent, and brains. What she doesn't realize is that Hazaar's future has already been decided, and Charlie has no place in it.  Hazaar desperately wants to break with her traditions and stay with Charlie, but when forced to choose, she chooses her family over love. When she realizes the choice she made is the worst one possible, it's too late.  Years later, while working in Pakistan as a diplomat and negotiator, Charlie receives a phone call from a woman who says her British sister-in-law is to be killed for the family's honor and asks if someone can save her.  Charlie and Hazaar are on a collision course with destiny. If they make it out alive, can they believe in their love once again?    9 After the Night by Rachel Dax  After The Night is a sweeping lesbian love story set in a British prison in 1960. When Nurse Leah Webster begins her first job at a prison hospital, little does she know that her world will be turned upside down by falling in love with Chief Officer Jean MacFarlane. But the course of lesbian love does not always run smoothly and together Leah and Jean have to fight homophobia both within and without the prison walls.   10 Christmas At Winterbourne by Jen Silver  The Christmas festivities for the guests booked into Winterbourne House have all the goings-on of a traditional holiday. Join the guests and staff at Winterbourne for a Christmas you'll not soon forget.    Honorable mentions  Poppy Jenkins by Clare Ashton  Poppy Jenkins is beloved by everyone who lives in Wells, a village in Wales. She is the girl next door and friend to all. Despite  being close to her loving family, gorgeous little sister, good friends and sense of community,  she is the only lesbian in town and she is lonely.  Enter Rosalyn Thorn.  Roselyn and Poppy were inseparable as youngsters. Roselyn was the town outsider, she spoke her mind and was not a pushover. As a result she was labelled as trouble and the only reason anyone put up with her was because of her connection to Poppy.  Then they turned 16 and overnight, something happened that caused Roselyn to push Poppy away breaking her heart.  Eventually Roselyn left town and Poppy was left with a big question mark as to why she had lost her best friend.  15 years later Roselyn walks back into Poppy’s life and turns her calm, quiet world upside down. This episode is brought to you by Nature's Path Organics RICKI LAKE Biography From acting and producing, to dancing her way into the hearts of television audiences, Emmy Award-winning television host Ricki Lake is a pop culture icon who has built a career on her graciously candid sensibility and her authentic, relatable nature. In recent years, she has channeled her nurturing spirit and drive for social change into passion projects that are altering the way society views birth, breastfeeding, childhood obesity and birth control. Lake’s legacy and perhaps her greatest love is her role as independent filmmaker. Her award-winning, critically acclaimed documentary “The Business of Being Born” debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007 and is often hailed as the “must see” film among mothers-to-be “I was profoundly affected by the births of my two sons in ways I never anticipated,” Lake comments. “It can be one of the most empowering experiences in a woman’s life. But part of that involves having options and being the decision-maker in what you want that experience to be.” Lake and creative partner Abby Epstein co-wrote the book, “Your Best Birth” and released “More Business of Being Born” a four-part DVD series featuring celebrities sharing their birth stories, as well as an in-depth discussion on the birth process. “The Business of Being Born” franchise includes a thirty-minute classroom edition, which has screened at hundreds of schools all over the country.
