Lachlan Penfold has worked with some of the world's most successful clubs across numerous sports from rugby to the NBA to water polo. While he is an innovative physical performance coach, one theme keeps emerging to him: the most successful clubs are built more on the strength of connection as the strength the body. On this episode of the GAINcast he looks at how to build a culture starting with a foundation of joy, monitoring athletes through personal interactions, and more lessons from some of the world's best coaches. Tradition makes baseball a great game, but tradition also holds it back. If you read or follow baseball, the sport often seems like it is in a constant civil war between the data analysts and the old school coaches. Coach Paul Davis pulling together and balancing both sides of the spectrum, helping move the sport forward while respecting and learning from its past. He joins us on this week's GAINcast to talk about creating a learning organization, finding usable data, the evolution of the game, rethinking the demands of pitching and athletic development for pitchers, and a look at velocity and pitcher health. Coaches education is filled with lessons on technique, methods, sport science, and more. What is often missing is how to put it all together. How to design a training session, training cyle, or training year is a key skill that many coaches struggle to learn in the trenches. A lot of coaches like to talk about building individualized training plans, but more often that not their athlete's programs start looking all the same. Paul Solberg is a bit different. He's coaching some of the world's top throwers, and they take very different approaches to reach the same goal. He joins us on this week's podcast to share his process for understanding athletes, tailoring training plan, training intensities, building training blocks, and much more. For many strength coaches, the warmup is the best weapon they have. It's a dedicated time each day to work with athletes, whether they make it in the weight room or not. But to really get the most out of it, you have to have a plan to allow you to use the time effectively, build athlete buy in, and gain the confidence of the coaching staff. On this week's episode Rett Larson joins us to share his plan and philosophy of warming up based on his experience in the Olympic volleyball world. LTAD has almost become a cliché. Everyone has an LTAD program and they all look the same. How can that be? Because the models assume a linear march to the top of the athletic achievement pyramid. In reality it is a very chaotic process at best, full of detours, false starts and redirection. Load management is a hot topic with evolving viewpoints in many sports, especially basketball. A few years ago coaches seemed to think of loads as a poison to be avoided, but many coaches are advocating a new paradigm instead: loads are best managed when you are prepared for them. Chris Chase of the Memphis Grizzlies joins this week's GAINcast to discus how he prepares athletes for the demands of the long NBA season, including his use of some non-traditional methods such as flywheel training and constrained movements to find stimulus during the season. Perhaps the two most important words in programming are: it depends. We often focus on the exercise or structure, forgetting about the context. But the context is what makes or breaks training. On this week's GAINcast we look at finding context in training. When Åsmund Martinsen began working with a young Andreas Thorkildsen in 2001, they set about making the “most athletic Javelin thrower in the world” in order to develop a special talent. They developed a program based on the balance of strength, speed, flexibility and gymnastics, to create a “superathlete” that happened to throw the Javelin, and remain healthy enough to contest for all major titles over a long career. On this week's podcast Martinsen breaks down the training of two-time Olympic champion Andreas Thorkildsen with guest interviewer Shaun Pickering. Thorkildsen had a long and consistent career. We ran some numbers a few years ago to see when javelin throwers hit their peak, which shows some interesting developmental trends.
All throwing events are different. But more importantly all athletes are different. When we devise training we have to remember we're coaching people, not machines. This is central to the philosophy of throws coach Debbie Strange. On this week's GAINcast she joins us to discuss her coaching philosophy, the unique demands of the javelin throw, training plan design, and more. Too often we have a concept of how to train for a sport or event and use that as the starting point for the plan. We fit the athlete to the event. That works in some cases, but other times you need to fit the event to the athlete. In no event is that more important than the 800 meters, where athletes come from a wide variety of training and physiological backgrounds. On this week's episode coach Trevor Painter and former elite 800 meter runner Jenny Meadows join us to share some examples of fitting the event to an athlete, 800 meters training, and more. HMMR Podcast 85 also interviewed middle distance coach Danny Mackey and his wife, elite runner Katie Mackey. Mackey also wrote about tips on coaching your spouse in an article for the site. We also had a 4-part series looking at endurance training including: GAINcast 91 looked at endurance methods and concepts, GAINcast 92 looked at athletic development for endurance athletes, GAINcast 95 looked at endurance planning, and GAINcast 99 looked at fitness and endurance training for team sports. Stephen Seiler joined us on GAINcast 104 to share insights on polarized training and other endurance training concepts. Carrie Lane has also contributed a lot about strength and speed training for runners. She has written in detail about why runners need to lift, lifting methods for runners, creating a strength plan, and sprint training for endurance athletes. We also interviewed Lane on HMMR Podcast 51 to discuss lifting for endurance athletes.
Coaches now devote more time to recovery and injury prevention than ever before. At the same time, injury rates have climbed to historic levels in many sports. How can it be that we're working harder to prevent injuries, but athletes continue to get hurt at increasing rates? On this week's GAINcast we look at how the modern approach to injury prevention might actually be making things worse, and propose some new ideas for reducing injury rates. You can read some of Vern's memories of Sam Cunningham here, as well as this profile of the Cunningham brothers from earlier this year. This episode was inspired by Vern's article on the topic from July. Return to performance and rehabilitation was our HMMR site theme in September 2020, with contributions from many authors. The performance model for rehabilitation was looked at on GAINcast 49 with Bill Knowles and HMMR Podcast 231 with Donie Fox. We also covered injury prevention on GAINcast 6. Hamstring injuries has also been a recurring theme. Here are two articles on hamstring injuries and hamstring solutions. The new research on injury prevention discussed in this episode was summarized by Craig Pickering in our most recent Sports Science Monthly. HRV and data was another topics discussed on this episode, and we looked at it in more detail on GAINcast 221 with Dr. Michael Joyner.
What is keeping us from going faster? Ironically, a lot of times it is what we are doing rather than what we aren't doing. What we other think is helping our speed can be counterproductive. If running is a natural movement, then how come so many adults have poor running mechanics? Children can only develop skills in activities that they do, and therefore coaches and parents have to help them find the right activities that will nudge them in the right direction. Training is about preparing for the game. It's a simple concept, but we often lose sight of that when we dive too deep into tactics, strength training, or other facets of training. Core training is one of the most misunderstood concepts out there. Not only does the term core lack a consistent definition, but training is often inspired by myths. On this week's GAINcast we assembled a roundtable of some of the most experienced practitioners in the area to try to define the topic, evaluate common training means, and discuss their own approach to the complex topic. Many coaches lament the decline of physical education and physical literacy. Rather than just complain about it, Darren Ritchie has been at the forefront of doing something about it. As head of coach development at Scottish Athletics, he sought to arm coaches with new tools to battle the problem. On this week's GAINcast Ritchie joins us to discuss how he helped define and build physical competence in Scotland. Athletes are reporting to training camp in many sports right now and that often means one thing: grueling fitness tests to check an athlete's shape. But the testing is getting out of hand. Vern has also written about the related testing = training and training = testing concept. You can learn more about the Max Jones Quadrathlon here.

There are dozens of long-term athlete development models out there that try to explain the best way to turn youth athletes into champions. The problem is that they incorporate much more theory than practice. In reality, success cannot be broken down into one pathway or plan.
