JOHN DILLON is recognized for his work as producer and co-host (along with his wife Vivian Nesbitt) of Art of the Song a one-hour program about songwriting and creativity heard across America on over 100 public radio stations. His book The 20-20 Creativity Solution gives readers a step-by-step process to enhance their creativity. As a luthier, John has built over 80 custom guitars for the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Trisha Yearwood, the Mavericks and Steve Earle.    His current project is HOPE ROAD - from Addiction to Recovery, an album of 12 songs that chronicle John's journey from being a carefree traveling hippie in the ‘60s to serious cocaine and alcohol addiction in the ‘80s. John recalls a ‘divine intervention' in the form of a run-in with the law. His true recovery journey began at an addiction treatment center in 1992. Subsequent songs on the album show how John has maintained sobriety and spiritual growth through gratitude, service and commitment to a 12-step program. John lives on a farm in upstate New York with his wife Vivian, her mother, two dogs, two horses and lots of guitars. John and his wife are going on 30 years of Recovery!! Huge Congrats to both of you!! Joe Manchin (D- W. Virginia) is basking in the limelight that he created by being a lynchpin in the US Senate. His antics are a continuing source of frustration for the President and the rest of the Democrats in the Senate. His deluded stubbornness, refusing to be a team player, or perhaps playing for the wrong team is nothing short of maddening.  Singlehandedly he is holding up any forward movement of the Biden agenda. Democrats are stymied at every turn.  While Manchin acts more like a Republican than a Democrat, voting rights advocates scream foul as hundreds of voter suppression bills become laws and threaten to blow up our democracy and bring about the end of “The Great Experiment” that is the United States of America.  Never forget, it's Manchin who is holding up passage of HR1 – the Voting Rights Bill, the only thing that has the potential to quash the outrageous and outright illiberal laws that bring the country closer and closer to autocratic rule.Robin's guest is Christale Spain, founder of 46 Hope Road, a voter engagement organization in South Carolina.  We take a deep dive into what voting rights groups are working on so that 2022 and beyond are not lost to the Machiavellian antics of the far right.

In this episode of the Rock n Roll Librarian Shelley and Christian discuss the book So Much Things to Say: The Oral History of Bob Marley (2017).Roger Steffens, a respected historian and a leading Marley expert, has woven interviews of more than 75 friends, relatives, and lovers, music associates (including original Wailers Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer), into a rich testimony of the life of the reggae king―the full, inside account of how a boy from the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, became a cultural icon and inspiration to millions around the world. Over four decades of interviews tell dramatic, little-known stories about the writing of his beloved songs, his musical development and early sessions with the Wailers, and relationships with Rita Marley and Cindy Breakspeare. It also delves into controversies and mysteries, including the harrowing assassination attempt at 56 Hope Road in Kingston, his defiant performance two nights later with a bullet lodged in his arm, and the discovery and (mis)treatment of his cancer and ultimate tragic death. The intimate voices and frankness of their revelations offer multiple perspectives on key events in the reggae icon's life. Steffens voice guides the narrative, but So Much Things to Say is a collective accomplishment, a transformative slice of music history.https://www.amazon.com/So-Much-Things-Say-History/dp/039305845XThis show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.

How has music played an impact on your life? In addiction treatment, there are various ways you can do to get the help you need or get to that place where you can find healing for true recovery to happen – music, being one of them. On today's episode, Duane speaks with John Dillon – a singer and songwriter, radio producer, guitar maker, and author – to talk about his latest album, Hope Road: From Addiction to Recovery. John shares his story of finally finding sobriety and spiritual growth through the 12-step community and what led him to share his hope and wisdom through his music. It's interesting to hear John talk about how he tracked his own recovery through his album. John decided to write this album and share it with others who may still be struggling and who need more hope in their life so they can ultimately achieve recovery.John learned how to play the guitar at 13 years old. Growing up in the 60s, which was the hippie generation, John was a rebellious teenager. And back then, drugs and alcohol were part of the music scene. Seven more years later, the drugs and alcohol were not fun anymore. Then in the 80s, he just became addicted to cocaine. There was also a time when John joined a spiritual community in New Mexico, which gave him a sheltered life, without drugs and alcohol for eight years. Once he left that path, the drugs and alcohol started to creep back into his life again. John's divine intervention came in the form of a run-in with the law, where he ended up getting pulled over by cops who found a bag of cocaine inside his car, along with an opened bottle of wine. At that point, he was ready to surrender and got into the 12-step program. In this episode, you will hear:John's love of musicHis addiction to cocaineGoing deep into his spiritualityFrom being sober to coming back to addictionLiving a double lifeRunning in with the law as the start of his surrender processHis 12-step journeyHow music played a role in his recoveryA walk through some tracks in his albumKey Quotes:[16:55] - "Music has been a very important part of my life, all through these ups and downs."[22:59] - "There's a certain magic about music.
