“You know my methods. Apply them!” [HOUN]    In 1893, a curious entry appeared in the Tit-Bits magazine: an examination paper on the methods of Sherlock Holmes. A cash prize was offered to the winner (whom we know). The author of the quiz, though? That's been unknown for nearly a century and a half. Until Michael Meer came along and made an identification that earned him the Morley-Montgomery Award for 2024. It's just a Trifle. “the loss of the old black boot” [HOUN]    Brown boot, black boot — these two items of Sir Henry Baskerville's went missing at the Northumberland Hotel shortly after he arrived in London. And they begin to put Sherlock Holmes on the scent of The Hound of the Baskervilles.   However, there's a wrinkle regarding the old black boot that persists throughout the story. George Fletcher, BSI ("The Cardboard Box") made a note of this curious detail for the very first time in The Papers on the Sundial, a 2020 publication from The Five Orange Pips. And it's quite the Trifle.   Do you have a topic you'd like to recommend? Brandon Weldy carried a heavy burden when he was a kid, but he rarely let it show. His dad died when he was five, and by the time he was in elementary school, his mom had lost custody of her kids, and Brandon and his younger sisters were being raised by their grandparents. But at school, Brandon was all smiles. He brought a lot of laughs and energy wherever he went, from the football field to the basketball court, but it wasn't until he was an adult and started his career as a teacher and a coach that he started to see how that sharing the story behind his troubled childhood might help kids who were in similar situations. Brandon is now married to his wife, Jacinda, and they live in Republic, Missouri, where they are raising three boys. He recently took a job as an assistant principal at a school in a nearby district, but I'm sure he won't be away from the whistle for long. Some notes for this week's show: This episode is sponsored by Pete Young, a graduate from the Aurora High School Class of 1975. Pete is an active member of the Houn' Dawg Alumni Network, which is hosting its annual all-school reunion on Sept. 24 and 25 in Aurora. For more information, go the Houn' Dawg Alumni Network page on Facebook for more information. Each week, I make a donation to a nonprofit of choice selected by the classmate featured in the show. This week's donation is going to Honor Flight of the Ozarks, which facilitates trips for veterans to Washington DC. In 2009, Brandon joined his grandfather, Bill Weldy, who was a Purple Heart recipient, on an Honor Flight trip. You can find out more about the organization at honorflightoftheozarks.org.

Whether it was in the 1940s or today, the world offers a up a variety of stressors and developments that cause one to wish to simply forget about it all for a while. Hence, the concept of escapism. The pastime of Sherlock Holmes is a form of escapism, and we explore what it means, the origin of the phrase, and how it differs from procrastination. And there were a number of individuals in the Canon who were escaping from something or who wished to bury themselves in some sort of distraction or hobby. From Irene Adler to Selden, Hugh Boone to Brunton, J. Neil Gibson to Elsie Cubitt, there were reasons to withdraw and escape; and Stapleton, Baron Gruner, and Sherlock Holmes himself had hobbies that kept them otherwise occupied from time to time. Napoleon Hill Foundation Certified Instructors Tom Cunningham (too tall) and Tim Chhim interviewed Vicheara Houn. Vicheara was born in  Phnom Penh, Cambodia in the peaceful days before the Khmer Rouge communist rebels engulfed this small Southeast Asian nation in four years of death and destruction. As the only child of a wealthy and politically prominent father, her young life was one of great contrasts. She went to University of Phnom Penh to study pharmacy and met her husband there. Their forbidden romance caused much conflict but eventually they prevailed and married in Janurary,1975 , four months before the Khmer Rouge took over and their lives turned upside down. All the residents of Phnom Penh, including Vicheara’s entire family, were forced out of their homes and expelled from the city in a mass exodus by the Khmer Rouge rebels. One by one, every member of Vicheara’s family starved to death.  Her young husband was murdered. Emaciated and alone, she managed to survive until 1979 when the Khmer Rouge was defeated by the Vietnamese and the survivors were liberated. Vicheara returned to her paternal home. She finished her pharmacy degree and made a daring escape to a refugee camp in Thailand. There she met the man who would become her second husband and they made their way to the US in 1984, where they had two children, a boy and a girl. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry. She later divorced and met her current husband in Portland , OR. Later, they moved to Arizona where Vicheara finished writing this first book, Bamboo Promise, to share her amazing story of survival with the world. http://boramtz.wix.com/bamboo-promise#!books/cnec
