Brian Cox is one of the finest classical actors of his generation. Fans of Succession will of course know him for his portrayal of the ruthless media mogul, Logan Roy, but in this interview we go back to the beginning of Cox's long career, which has its roots deeply in theatre. We also go back to his childhood in Dundee, which was unusual and somewhat solitary. Brian talks to Gyles about his early years, the death of his father when he was very young, and his mother's subsequent struggles with mental illness and depression. He talks about his early ambitions to act, his lucky break getting a job at Dundee Rep when he was only 15 and the things that happened there. He tells Gyles about moving to London for drama school, getting married, and his early successes. He tells stories about some of the great actors he's worked with: Olivier, Richardson and Gielgud. This is a fascinating conversation with an unconventional, and remarkable, person. Thank you to Brian for this brilliant interview. Brian is currently starring in The Score at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, in London. It's open until April 26th 2025. Gyles has been and loved it - this is highly recommended.

Great Scott...600 episodes?! To mark the occasion, I'm on a trip to 221B Baker Street with my favorite radio adventures of Sherlock Holmes. In this super-sized Sherlock special, we'll hear John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson in "A Scandal in Bohemia." Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are Holmes and Watson in "The Notorious Canary Trainer" (originally aired on Mutual on April 23, 1945) and "The Speckled Band" (originally aired on Mutual on November 12, 1945), and then Bruce is joined by Tom Conway as Holmes in "The Adventure of the Tolling Bell" (originally aired on ABC on April 7, 1947). My personal favorite Holmes and Watson - John Stanley and Alfred Shirley - headline "The Laughing Lemur of Hightower Heath" (originally aired on Mutual on October 26, 1947), "The Cadaver in the Roman Toga" (originally aired on Mutual on November 9, 1947), "The Stolen Naval Treaty" (originally aired on Mutual on November 23, 1947), and "The Case of the Sudden Senility" (originally aired on Mutual on January 11, 1948). And finally, it's - appropriately enough - "The Final Problem," with Gielgud, Richardson, and special guest star Orson Welles as Professor Moriarty. In the mood for more Holmes and Watson? Click here for our spotlight show on Edith Meiser, the woman who brought Holmes to radio and penned his adventures for years. And here's a collection of mysteries featuring Holmes and Watson battling seemingly supernatural foes.

Recorded in his dressing room at the Wyndham's Theatre in London while he was starring as James Tyrone opposite Patricia Clarkson in Jeremy Herrin's production of A Long Day's Journey Into Night.

Preparation for a performance on stage goes beyond just memorising lines, learning blocking and hoping it will be alright on the night. A diligent actor studies the history of the period of the play, learns about the intentions of the playwright, and absorbs from older colleagues knowledge of how the play has been done in the past.In his less than stellar career as an actor, Michael Goldfarb went through this process many times. In this essay, Michael recalls his admiration for John Gielgud. He remembers The Motive and the Cue, the play about John Gielgud directing Richard Burton in Hamlet. He also had a chance meeting with the legendary actor at the stage door of the Apollo theatre in London when Gielgud was starring in David Storey's 'Home'.
After a largely negative critical response and reports of audience members walking out en masse, it was announced earlier today that OPENING NIGHT would conclude its limited run at the Gielgud Theatre prematurely. The show, based on the 1977 John Cassavetes film of the same name, has been directed and conceived by Ivo Van Hove with an original score by Rufus Wainwright and Sheridan Smith starting in the leading role.Find out more about the news, what might be next for the Gielgud and what this tells us about the state of musical theatre in today's new episode...•00:00 | introduction01:41 | statements / my thoughts12:14 | what happens next?•About Mickey-Jo:As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. After the show premiered in Cheltenham, the show made its way to the Noel Coward Theatre where it had a modest run and gained new fans as well. Old Friends also marks the first time Damian has returned to the Gielgud theatre having previously starred in the acclaimed but short-lived production of Lend Me a Tenor. It's interesting to hear Damian provide his insight and analysis of what is currently happening across the theatre landscape as he looks ahead to the next 20 years of his career. He remains committed to creating high quality pieces of art and shares his hopes of working on more Sondheim pieces going forwards.Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends runs at the Gielgud Theatre until 6th January 2024
Richard Walter Jenkins Jr. was born in November of 1925 in Wales to an hard drinking coal miner cum absentee father and a pub barmaid. Growing up in a rough steel mill town under the roof of his older sister and her husband, he left school to work in the mines after his sister's husband (like both parents before him) fell ill, due to the unregulated, non-unionized working conditions, before joining the RAF, where he served as navigator. His omnipresent sideline in theatrical productions led to adoption by acting tutor and schoolmaster Philip Burton, and he fell under the wing of none other than Sir John Gielgud. As part of a Gielgud-led touring company, he came Stateside, winning both a World Theatre Award and a succession of Hollywood film roles. His leading role in The Robe both kicked off a proper filmic career and entangled him in a decades long, fiery on and off relationship with Elizabeth Taylor, who'd star with him in numerous films and tabloid headlines throughout the 60s and 70s. Starring in everything from critical accolade-bedecked dreck like Look Back in Anger, Equus and Night of the Iguana and excellent films like The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, 1984 or Where Eagles Dare to cult absurdities Candy, The Medusa Touch and Exorcist II, Burton was arguably more famed for his offscreen antics than his own theatrical talents...and had a rollercoaster of a career that reflected both his notable highs and precipitous lows. Join us as we take on one of the most notorious thespians to walk the boards and chew the cinematic scenery, the late great Richard Burton, only here on Weird Scenes! It's a couple of weeks now since the public berating of Róisín Murphy for expressing (in a private Facebook post) her concern with some of the more extreme elements of transgender ideology. At around the time that Róisín's story was dominating the free speech news, Tom was fortunate enough to catch the final night of ‘The Crucible' at London's Gielgud theatre. In that context, we take the opportunity in this week's episode to revisit the ideas of blasphemy and the parallels between contemporary ideological wars and the witch trials of the 17th century. The topic quite naturally moves on to a discussion of how a deeper understanding of religion, and Christianity in particular, might offer us a path through some of our problems.
School's out for summer, so what's good on the West End? Spitting Image & Have I Got News For You writer, John O'Farrell, joins us to talk about turning the iconic Mrs Doubtfire into a musical. He also discusses his work on the movie Chicken Run - and drops a few hints about the upcoming sequel.Following on from our interview with House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock and Succession's Caitlin Fitzgerald, who star in the show, we review The Crucible, the Arthur Miller play currently being staged by Lyndsey Turner at the Gielgud theatre.Plus, our thoughts on Beneatha's Place at the Young Vic, written and directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and led by Cherrelle Skeete, who starred in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - listen to our interview with her here. Whether any man wants cock in Tod - and what that even means? The madrigals he sang the very first time he was on stage? What wonderful tradition began with Ralph Richardson firing rockets off the roof of the National Theatre? And why Mark will forever remember our Jonny as the Donmar Enforcer? Of course you do! Shat on TV listeners begging us to cover "House of The Dragon" finally get their wish in this week's Shat The Movies feature: "Arthur." This episode commissioned by David K. also explores what to wear shoplifting and features tons of listener mail. Dudley Moore and John Gielgud aren't household names in America, but the two English legends created an 1981 comedy alongside the goddess Liza Minnelli that distilled the essence of New York. "Arthur" led the Shat Crew to conversations about Christopher Cross' theme song for the movie, being stage drunk, surprise tears, unnecessary cruelty, Russell Brand, the pressure of growing up wealthy and how Scotch led to the prevalence of roosters in '90s New Orleans kitchens. We’re wrapping up 2018 and spending the holidays with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The dynamic duo of Baker Street stars in three old time radio mysteries taking us from Christmas to New Year’s Eve. First, John Stanley and Alfred Shirley star in “The Adventure of the Christmas Bride” (originally aired on Mutual on December 21, 1947). Then, John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson play Holmes and Watson in an adaptation of the Arthur Conan Doyle Christmas story “The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.” Finally, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce ring in the new year in “The Iron Box” (originally aired on Mutual on December 31, 1945).
After graduating from Rose Bruford in 2001 Rosalie Craig joined the RSC and made her professional debut in Adrian Mitchell’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Her stage career since then has featured leading roles in both plays and musicals including the National Theatre productions of London Road, As You Like It, and Tori Amos’s The Light Princess at the National Theatre, for which she won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Musical Performance in 2013. She is currently starring in Jez Butterworth’s critically acclaimed smash hit The Ferryman at the Gielgud until 19 May, and will return to the same theatre in September to star in Marianne Elliot’s highly anticipated production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, alongside Broadway legend Patti LuPone. The new version of the show will see Craig’s character Bobbi played as a woman for the first time.
"the faded script" [HOUN] We've all had experience listening to Sherlock Holmes audio programs. Right? RIGHT?? And just as we have favorite screen adaptations, we also have our special audio heroes as well. Rathbone and Bruce, Gielgud and Richardson, Shelley and Hobbes, Merrison and Williams... they all bring to mind a feeling of nostalgia for the stories. But there are many original episodes that have gone missing. And our guest, Ian Dickerson, has managed to track down some of the original scripts of the Rathbone/Bruce radio series that were lost to the ages. Between the Edith Meiser era and the Anthony Boucher / Dennis Green era, there was another writer — one known more for his stories about Simon Templar than anything else. And Ian managed to unearth them and put together a fine book on the topic. Information on sponsors, links, and notes available below. And please consider becoming a .
Erin and Paul raise their glasses to two films about lovable drunks: the 1981 Dudley Moore vehicle ARTHUR, and the 1987 dive-bar drama BARFLY, starring Mickey Rourke and scripted by Charles Bukowski. Plus: our quick takes on ROUGH NIGHT, BABY DRIVER, THE BAD BATCH and OKJA.
During our longest episode to date, Nicholas Koy Santillo is joined by Lucy Atkinson, Lindsay Huebner, Whitton Frank, Joe Richardson and Robert Bradley. Join us from the Gielgud theatre in London's West end while we discuss the meaty centre of this awesome tragedy. During this episode we discuss, among others; Shakespearean clowns. Why are they there? Why are they always cut? The drastic emotional swings of the characters in Othello - are they justified? Emilia and Iago's messed up marriage. The incredible capacity for Shakespeare to give his actors direction through the structure of his verse. The domestic scale of the narrative. Why do we call it a 'feminine' ending, and what does tell the actor? Iago's ingenious capacity to persuade and convince, without outright lying.
In our introduction episode to Othello (and Tabling: The Podcast's first London recording!) Nicholas Koy Santillo is joined by; Lucy Atkinson, Lindsday Huebner, and Whitton Frank. After discussing various topics, including podcasts and epic vs. personal theatre, we discuss: The Intimate quality of Othello, especially compared with other works of Shakespeare. Each of our relationship's with the play. The (seemingly?) dominant issue of race. Past and contemporary productions and staging conventions of Othello. Othello's character - his military history, 'other-ness', and use of language. During this play, we were lucky enough to record out of the Gielgud theatre, in London's West End!
Sherlock Holmes has a rich history on radio, beginning in the 1930s and running clear through to the 2010s. From William Gillette to Basil Rathbone, Cedric Hardwicke to John Gielgud, and Carlton Hobbs to Roger Rees. But there is one production that stands heads and shoulders above the rest. The BBC Radio 4 series starring Clive Merrison and Michael Williams managed to do what no other production had done before it: to dramatize all 60 Sherlock Holmes with the same principal cast members. The head writer behind the project was Bert Coules, and Bert is our guest for a very special two-part series examining the history of Sherlock Holmes on the radio, with a particular focus on the BBC series. In this interview you'll not only hear Bert's origins with Sherlock Holmes, but you'll also be treated to excerpts from some of the productions throughout the 20th century. And for those of you paying attention, there is a money quote about Nigel Bruce buried within. In addition to our conversation with Bert, we also get to some very important housekeeping, including announcing the winners of the Tom Richmond print and pen from .
