George Milling-Stanley, chief gold strategist at State Street Global Advisors, says that inflation staying stubbornly above the target of the Federal Reserve -- despite the central bank's moves that have raised interest rates to 20-year highs -- has created the kind of market conditions in which gold, historically, has thrived. He does not think gold's success is necessarily due to its traditional role as a hedge against inflation, because that requires inflation sustained at levels above 5 percent, but it is other dynamics like geopolitical risk and two ongoing wars that are combining with inflation to drive gold now. Also on the show, Cam Miller of Money Pickle talks about how market highs have shown that consumers are happy with their financial advisers, but how consumers haven't developed loyalty to advisers, a sign that they might bail out and reduce the effectiveness of financial planning if/when market conditions turn. Matt Brannon discusses the "True Cost of Homeownership" study from Clever Real Estate, which showed that a surprising number of Americans find themse3lves house poor and having regrets about the properties they own, and Emerson Ham III, senior partner at Sound View Wealth Advisors, makes his debut in the Market Call talking stocks, traditional mutual funds and ETFs.

There are many different schools of thought when it comes to investment strategies. Some people invest based on stocks, others on cryptocurrency. And then some invest in gold. Gold has been used as a form of currency and investment for centuries, and it's still a popular choice today. How can investors own gold and include it in their portfolios? In this episode, Rusty and Robyn talk with Maxwell Gold, Head of Gold Strategy at State Street Global Advisors. Before joining SSGA in July 2019, Maxwell served as the Director of Investment Strategy at Aberdeen Standard Investments, heading macroeconomic and commodity thought leadership for its $3B U.S. ETF business. It's hard to replicate the exact factors or risk exposure it provides compared to any other asset class out there." - Maxwell Gold [12:55] - "The real power and benefit of gold ‘inflation hedge' comes from monetary inflation and gold's ability to serve not as an inflation hedge per se but much more as a store value asset and ability to preserve spending power, particularly over the long run over several years, if not longer." - Maxwell Gold   Links  Maxwell Gold on LinkedIn State Street SPDR ETFs Gold on the Ceiling by The Black Keys Merrill Lynch JP Morgan Money For Nothing by Thomas Levenson Connect with our hosts Rusty Vanneman Robyn Murray Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts 1357-OPS-8/1/2022

George Milling-Stanley, chief gold strategist at State Street Global Advisors, says that the Federal Reserve's signals that it will do whatever it takes to get inflation under control has created conditions in which all markets -- stocks, bonds, commodities and more -- suffer. While Milling-Stanley doesn't think the Fed wants to create a recession, but he says it will take that step if that's what's needed to "knock out any sense that inflationary expectations have become embedded" in the economy. Also on the show, John Petrides, portfolio manager at Tocqueville Asset Management, says the market is at a crossroads, where it could rally before year-end or where 2022 ends painfully. Petrides says the market is closer to the bottom than it was at the start of the year, but he expects three months of volatility before the market gets to where it can sort things out on inflation and set a path forward. And while the entire market might feel troubled right now, Kyle Guske of New Constructs sidesteps the "Danger Zone" his week by pointing out a stock that has been hit too hard by the market, and which he believes has now become particularly attractive now.

Key points discussed in the episode: ✔️ Ben Colton defines his role as the Global Head of Asset Stewardship Team at State Street Global Advisors (SSGA). Regulatory advocacy, thought leadership, company engagement, and accountability mechanisms - these are the most powerful tools he uses. ✔️ All companies should report according to the TCFD framework. Engage with companies to understand sector specificity and disclosure laggards. ✔️ Ben Colton believes transition investing opens doors for business expansion and opportunities. He also points out polarizing the discussion and shaming companies can be counterintuitive. “Don't ask them when they want to get there but how they want to get there.” ✔️ Ben Colton provides well-documented evidence on the positive impact of SSGA's Fearless Girl campaign. Gender is just one facet of diversity, as his company aims to instill diversity in thought - more underrepresented communities in leadership positions. ✔️ SSGA has published guidance in 2017 on how companies can enhance diversity-related practices. They aim to imprint these methods on business in the United States and other prepared nations.  ✔️ An SSGA article titled “The World Targets Change” says, “Climate strategies are driving economic transitions.” Ben Colton states the SSGA has outlined expectations based on the IIGCC, Climate Action 100+, and high-emitting companies. ✔️ With ESG, companies can be part of the solution. Bigger names shouldn't receive the brunt of the blame as businesses of all sizes should be accountable. ✔️ The proprietary ESG score, created by SSGA, intends to establish credibility in disclosure expectations, engagement priorities, and voting activity. ✔️ Diversity is closely correlated with human capital management and corporate culture. Progressive diversity and inclusion practices promote employee satisfaction. ✔️ Companies that tap into the opinions of employees are willing to listen to diverse perspectives, putting them on equal footing with stakeholders. Ben Colton is the Global Head of the Asset Stewardship Team at State Street Global Advisors (SSGA). His team is responsible for developing and implementing SSGA's global proxy voting policies and guidelines across all investment strategies, and managing SSGA's proxy voting activities and issuer engagement on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. After years as an index fund evangelist at top ETF firms like BlackRock and SSgA, Dodd Kittsley did a 180 of sorts, becoming Director of active manager Davis Advisors. Still opposed to the “closet indexing” that marks many active managers, Dodd was drawn to Davis’ unique approach to active management: High-conviction, low turnover, low cost, tax-efficient and fully transparent. He joins the first Let's Talk ETFs of 2021 to go under the hood of Davis’ four ETFs, which now have more than $1B in AUM between them: DWLD, DUSA, DINT and DFNL, and discuss why his firm is currently overweight the Financials sector. Show Notes ·  3:00 - How did Dodd end up in the ETF space and why did he choose join a small firm after so many years at behemoths like BlackRock and State Street? ·  9:00 - What is Davis's approach and what makes it unique? What's the research process like? ·  14:15 – Other active managers cite things like front-running and protection of intellectual property as major concerns. Why is this not the case for Davis? ·  22:15 - Do you have plans to go the semi-transparent active management route in the future? ·  25:15 – Going under the hood of Davis’ four ETFs: The $330M Davis Select Worldwide ETF (DWLD) The $310M Davis Select U.S. Equity ETF (DUSA) The $270M Davis Select International ETF (DINT) The $150M Davis Select Financial ETF (DFNL) · 28:00 - Is Davis’ approach entirely a “bottom up” one? · 30:15 - How much turnover is there? How do the funds look from a tax perspective? · 38:45 – DFNL and the case for Financials: Given the current historically low rate environment and flat yield curve, why is Davis currently overweight Financials? State Street Global Advisors recently released a Letter from its President and Chief Executive Officer, Cyrus Taraporevala, in which he called upon corporate Boards to place a greater emphasis on corporate culture, which State Street Global Advisors says is a top asset stewardship engagement priority for the asset manager in 2019. But more than simply laying out the problem around Board’s assessing and monitoring corporate culture, State Street Global Advisors laid out a Framework for Boards to do so with their recently released Aligning Corporate Culture with Long-Term Strategy. No matter how dramatic or controversial, truly great storytelling in marketing doesn’t just boil down to publicity stunts. Rather, the most impactful storytelling is all about the message a company is trying to convey and how that message originates from its internal values. And in the case of the famous “Fearless Girl” statue that faces down Wall Street’s charging bull, it was the message about fostering a greater diversity in the financial industry that has had a lasting impact. Stephen Tisdalle, CMO of State Street Global Advisors, was on the team that made the “Fearless Girl” statue. And although the installation made headlines all over the world, the campaign also prompted State Street Global Advisors to devote themselves to greater gender diversity in their own leadership and on their own boards. On this episode of Renegade Thinkers Unite, Stephen shares the internal challenges his team faced when developing the idea, the global reaction to the statue, and how this striking piece of storytelling marketing sparked a global-wide conversation about equality in the workforce. Click here to learn all about impactful storytelling in marketing. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts - Stitcher - or Podsearch earch What You’ll Learn Why did a statue of a ‘Fearless Girl’ in front of the ‘Charging Bull’ leave such an impression? The “Charging Bull” statue that lives on Wall Street has been an iconic symbol for decades. On March 7, 2017, SSGA unveiled the “Fearless Girl” statue - a brave young girl that confidently faces the bull. She continues to serve as a symbol for greater diversity on C-suite level boards, and that’s exactly what Stephen and his team were trying to convey. That’s what makes Fearless Girl such a prime example of storytelling marketing - a piece that stands the test of time and represents values that span companies, states, and even nations. You have to back up your storytelling marketing with action Fearless Girl may have remained a simple statue with a brief amount of fanfare if it hadn’t been for SSGA’s actions that backed up the claims she made. SSGA has committed to increasing the level of diversity in their own boards, as well as encouraging their clients to do the same. Stephen explains to Drew that since her installation, SSGA has found that more than 300 companies added a female director, and to-date another 28 plan to follow suit. Fearless Girl also amassed over 6.5 billion social media impressions. However, if a company’s storytelling marketing campaigns are to leave a persisting impact, they must be backed with action. Truly great marketing can flourish when its paired with important values The genius behind Fearless Girl lay in her ability to convey values that should be important to companies of all sizes in all industries. Stephen explains that “authenticity is attractive,” and that people are drawn to marketing campaigns that are aligned with important values. He continues by explaining that companies and leaders need to “do well, do better, by doing good.” Storytelling marketing can be the perfect way to convey those commitments. Timeline [0:30] Stephen explains why State Street wanted to put a fearless girl in front of a charging bull [9:50] Stephen and his team had to overcome internal concerns before moving forward with Fearless Girl [15:29] Great marketing comes when you align with important internal values [21:04] The true value behind Fearless Girl was in the actions taken across the world [26:24] Stephen explains the future of Fearless Girl [31:33] The storytelling process begins with a strong marketing focus [38:48] Fearless Girl and how she has impacted the brand awareness of State Street Global Advisors Connect With Stephen: Stephen’s State Street bio Connect with Stephen on LinkedIn Resources & People Mentioned ARTICLE, “The ‘Fearless Girl’ statue turns 1 today.
