“The most important things that I do every day are to take walks after my meals and make sure that I sleep a full eight hours. Those two simple things, which require a lot of adjusting for your lifestyle, have an outsized impact over the years and decades as they compound.” – Josh Clemente In this episode of Outliers, I'm talking with Josh Clemente (@joshuasforrest) about the concept of metabolic health, the importance of feedback loops, and why our daily choices have such a huge impact on our overall health. Josh Clemente is the Founder and President of Levels, a metabolic fitness company that helps people see how their choices affect their health in real-time. Before founding Levels, Josh was the Lead Life Support Systems Engineer at SpaceX, where he led the development of pressurized life support systems aboard spacecraft. He's also worked as a Senior Design Engineer at Hyperloop One and is a certified CrossFit Level 2 Trainer. In 2019, he founded Levels, which is a comprehensive app that uses constant glucose monitoring to provide easy-to-understand feedback on your diet, exercise, and daily activities. Chapters in this interview: How Josh's engineering background and role at SpaceX led to the creation of Levels How a ketogenic diet can affect your life expectancy The basics of ketones and ketosis How real-time data can help people choose the foods and activities that are healthiest for them Surprising insights from Levels customer data How Levels converts raw data into easy-to-understand scores Levels' expected launch date Whether glucose alone is the best indicator of overall health Sign up here for Outliers Weekly, our weekly Sunday newsletter that highlights our podcasts, business and investing concepts, and the best of what we read that week. Do you ever wish that you could know how specific foods impact your energy, sleep, mood, or overall health? And better yet, know in real-time so you can take actionable steps to get the outcome you want? A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) might just be the solution you are looking for. For most of their existence, these tools have only been available to those diagnosed with poorly managed diabetes. So, in other words, once there was already a problem. My guest for this episode, Josh Clemente, who when seeking answers to his own health questions, found this barrier to be frustrating and confusing. Why should you need permission or wait to have a problem in order to get information about your own body? Josh channeled these feelings and created Levels, a CGM available to the general public. Josh says “the intention of Levels is to generate metabolic awareness” and understand how all your individual choices affect you and use that to piece together tactics to achieve your goals. I don't typically dedicate an entire podcast episode to a single product unless it is one I truly love. Levels have given me insight into how the foods I eat and the context in which they are eaten, effects me. Plus, it gives me accountability at the same time as liberation. I can eat more carbs than I thought and find ways to fit in occasional ice cream (or tequila!). Listen in to find out more about CGMs and bio-individuality as Josh and I talk about: - How Levels started and Josh's struggle to find out information about his own body - Why healthcare (or rather, sickcare) needs engineers - The need for a paradigm shift from one of “symptom care” to one that enables people with feedback to make informed choices - Why the focus should be on metabolic dysfunction rather than specific diseases - What leads to metabolic dysfunction and why context matters - The importance of closed feedback loops in making decisions - Why you should pair salsa dancing with your margaritas - What the future holds for Levels Resources: Lily Nichols, RD Robb Wolf Wired to Eat by Robb Wolf Freestyle Libre Dexcom G6 Marty Kendall CDC stats on diabetes Weitzman Institute Study on CGMs Gretchen Rubin and The Four Tendencies Quiz Glucose Goddess Connect with Josh: Website: Levels Instagram: @levels Twitter: @levels LinkedIn: Josh Clemente Podcast: LEVELS - A Whole New Level *** Episode Credits: Thank you to all who've made this show possible. Sarah Wilson and Josh Clemente break down the impact of sugar in our diet and how to reduce our dependence on it. “I don't have the numbers off the top of my head, but it's something like, we're now eating 100 pounds of sugar per year, per person, and previously it was, I think, on the order of 1-3 pounds…it's essentially two orders of magnitude higher now than it was 150 years ago,” says Josh Clemente, founder of Levels. In this episode, we talk about the benefits of cutting down, or even completely cutting out sugar from our diet. This week I'm blessed to have on Josh Clemente on the show. Josh is the founder of Levels Health, which is an app that works synergistically with a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) to track your blood glucose in real time, so you can maximize your diet and exercise. The Levels app is your intelligent metabolic coach. By studying your food and exercise, the Levels app can show you how your fitness and dietary choices affect your metabolism, and give you ways to improve your health.I purchases a Levels' CGM and did my own 28 day experiment and was blown away by all the amazing data I got based on my lifestyle, eating habits, exercise and sleep. CGM's are probably one of the best biohacks out there, and in terms of overall health, is probably one of the best things you could purchase. We all know high levels of blood glucose, if not managed over time correctly, can lead to a host of illness and autoimmune conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, etc. One of the great things about Levels is not only the CGM, but their blog. They put a lot of top notch quality content such as: what should your glucose levels be, what is CGM, the Levels theory of behavior change, how a CGM can help you find the optimal foods to eat, and much more.Levels currently has a wait list of several thousands of people. Josh Clemente, Founder of Levels, and Sam Corcos, CEO and one of the co-founders of Levels, were acquaintances for a number of years before they co-founded the company. Today's guest is Josh Clemente. Josh is the co-founder of Levels, which is the first consumer program that lets an individual know how food and lifestyle choices are directly affecting blood sugar and metabolic health, in real-time. They pair glucose monitoring with intelligent software to support healthy blood sugar levels. Some early users have included professional athletes, biohackers, the weight loss community and other health enthusiasts. This chat serves as a great follow-up to the convo I had with Cyrus Khambatta on the pod not too long ago where we dove deep into the topics of insulin resistance and diabetes. I definitely invite you to check that episode out if you missed it. The dialogue today with Josh certainly will touch on these subjects, but we spend quite a bit of time chatting about the incredible technology he has helped to create and the data that has come from it. Josh is also a mechanical engineer and CrossFit-L2 trainer. At SpaceX, he led a team to develop life support systems that in May of 2020 began sustaining astronauts on trips to and from the International Space Station aboard Crew Dragon: the first human-rated commercial spacecraft in history. In our conversation, Josh walks you through his “adversity advantage” story and share why he decided to leave working for SpaceX after experiencing a health scare of his own that led him down a path of self-discovery that changed his life and inspired him to co-found Levels. Josh shares the benefits of using a continuous glucose monitor and how it can help shift the way we treat metabolic health issues. We talk about how certain foods affect insulin and how some widely promoted health foods can actually negatively impact blood sugar levels. Josh talks about how exercise impacts your metabolic health and flexibility and how certain types of exercise impact blood glucose levels. Our discussion also dovetails into sleep and stress and how they all play into this equation and what you can do to use them to your advantage. Levels is currently in “beta” and not available to the public. But, Josh has created a special page for y'all if you want to bypass the 115k + waitlist and purchase one now. Josh has also spent time designing and building hyperloop technology and leading engineering for a company providing vehicle-based rescue systems for emergency response teams. In this episode, Sam and Josh talk about the health scare that inspired Josh to take a new approach to health, fitness, and nutrition. Josh speaks to the overall mission and goals of his company, Levels, and debunks common myths about nutrition. Finally, Sam and Josh take a deep dive into metabolic health, the importance of getting quality sleep, and the future of nutrition technologies.
Josh Clemente is a former high-level SpaceX and Hyperloop engineer, turned founder of the rapidly scaling health-tech company (Levels Health). In this episode, Josh discusses how to apply first principles thinking to solve problems - whether in your career, relationships, or life in general. We also discussed the process of launching Levels, a product that allows you to look "under the hood" and see how foods you eat affect your blood sugar in real time, long term. If you've listened to any of my previous episodes, it's likely that you've heard me mention how important this is for health, performance, and longevity. Josh shared insights on how you can improve your blood glucose levels & how taking charge of his own health drastically changed his cognitive performance, energy, and mood. We’re going through a renaissance period in consumer health right now - new tech enabled products are coming out for sleep, telehealth, diet, nutrition and more. This week’s guest took us deep into what optimizing the metabolic function looks like. As I learned in prep for this conversation, seven of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S. are strongly related to metabolic dysfunction - metabolic function improves energy, endurance, memory, mood and cognitive performance. Josh Clemente has bought a biowearable metabolic sensor to market to help solve this problem - Levels is an innovative platform that pairs continuous glucose monitoring with an impressive software suite to provide the wearer with deep insights about their health. In advance of this conversation, Josh’s team sent my wife and I both a Levels to see how the product works and it was incredible - it provided us actionable health information and helped us understand how specific foods, exercise and timing of day affected our metabolic health. This episode was fun - Josh has experience at some of the most innovative companies in the world, like SpaceX and brought that experience to Levels to build a next generation category winner in healthcare.
We got *awesome* feedback on the recent special episode we did with Levels founder Josh Clemente -- so we asked Josh if he'd join for a follow-up Q+A session on our next LP Call, and he graciously agreed! The conversation was so good we decided to release the audio recording in the LP feed. (In addition to the LP Drive as always -- the video recording is linked there.) Thanks again to Josh and the Levels crew, and we hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did live!
In this episode, we take a look at a new startup, Levels and its mission to maintain what it coins "metabolic fitness" and how the company plans to help us monitor and regulate this based on our lifestyle. Our guest, Josh Clemente is Founder and President of Levels. He'll share his journey on his path toward starting Levels from his quest to understand his own personal burnout when building Life support systems at SpaceX. Finally, we discuss interesting insights you might find around tracking your metabolic health and the potential biomarkers we might be able to track in the very near future.

Josh Clemente is the Co-Founder of Levels. Josh is a rocket scientist and worked at SpaceX for 6 years, managing the team that designed the life support systems in their space shuttles. Overtime, he started to notice extreme levels of fatigue and experienced volatile spikes and crashes of energy throughout his day. For someone that worked out consistently and followed the guidelines for what he believed to be healthy practices, things didn't seem to add up. After experimenting with glucose monitoring, he realized that he was pre-diabetic, borderlining on fully-blown diabetic, and that the foods he was eating were having a significant impact on his performance. It was this discovery and struggle to derive actionable insights from his glucose monitoring that led him to start Levels.Today at Levels, Josh and his team are revolutionizing the way people think about their metabolic health. And why is metabolic health so important? Before Levels, an average person had no way of understanding how efficiently or inefficiently their body was producing energy. Levels enables you to access and understand this information in real-time, so you can start making better diet and lifestyle choices to avoid those energy peaks and valleys. When you join their program, you'll receive two, 14-day continuous glucose monitors that stay on your arm and measure the glucose in your blood. Using the Levels app, you're able to seamlessly monitor how different foods as well as things like sleep, stress and exercise are impacting your glucose levels and then proactively make adjustments. This week we got the chance to interview a former SpaceX Engineer and founder of biohacking startup Levels as part of a special podcast recording hosted by School16 in front of a live audience. In this episode, Josh Clemente told us about how he pushed his way into getting an opportunity to work at Tesla and then SpaceX, where he ended up leading the Life Support Systems team. He credits his time at SpaceX for teaching him how to think big and go after nearly impossible goals, and his time running his own general contracting business in college for giving him the confidence to start building a business that was going after a massive opportunity.Listen to find out how Josh came up with the idea for a continuous glucose monitoring technology that is being made available to anyone to help people avoid some of the most common and dangerous diseases. We also discuss how he built the right team to help him get his first customers, find investors, and start bringing it to the masses all in less than 2 years since he conceived it. Greetings, SuperFriends! Today we are joined by Josh Clemente. Josh, the founder of Levels, is a mechanical engineer and CrossFit-L2 trainer. At SpaceX, he led a team to develop life support systems that sustained astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on their May 2020 trip to the International Space Station aboard Dragon Endeavor: the first new crew-carrying spacecraft since 1980. Josh has also spent time designing and building Hyperloop technology and leading engineering for a company providing vehicle-based rescue systems for emergency response teams. But, we barely talked about any of that stuff today, because, as I already mentioned, Josh is the founder of a really fascinating company that I've been following for a while, called Levels. Their idea is that wearables are nice, but they rarely give you real, powerful data about what's going in your body. Well, Levels is trying to change that, by coming out with the first consumer-available continuous glucose monitor. Now, you've probably heard the hardcore biohackers in the world, like Dave Asprey and Tim Ferriss, wearing these glucose monitors that they need all kinds of connections to get, and all the wonderful things you can learn by wearing a glucose monitor. So, I wanted to learn what the big deal is with these, and why it's such an important technology to put in the hands of consumers. I ended up learning a lot about what turns out to be one of the most important molecules in the body - glucose - which powers almost everything that you do. And that's why we need to make sure that we have just the right Goldilocks level layers in our body at all times - more about this in the episode. I think you are really going to enjoy this episode, as I did! -Jonathan Levi
