Exclusive: The Tesla Tunnel Expansion, Investigated

City Cast Las Vegas

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 8, 2025 31:40

City Cast's new investigation, co-published with ProPublica, reveals new details about the so-called "Tesla tunnels" running under our city: When Elon Musk's Boring Company came to Las Vegas in 2019, its tunneling projects in other cities had already fizzled out after environmental reviews and public outcry. But here, with the backing of the powerful Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Boring Co. won a bid to build the Vegas Loop, a tunnel system for ferrying convention-goers around in underground Teslas — and it's since won approval from local government entities for 68 miles of tunnels. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Dayvid Figler and journalist Daniel Rothberg co-authored a new investigation for ProPublica about how the Boring Co. has advanced a sprawling transit system with little public oversight and input, despite the fines and environmental incidents it's racked up since the project began. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Sarah Lohman interviews Dayvid and Daniel in today's episode. Make sure to read the investigation in full here. ProPublica and City Cast Las Vegas made multiple attempts to reach the Boring Company for comment on this investigation, but have received no response as of the publication date.

Last week, Wynn Resorts announced that the drilling for their section of the Vegas Loop was complete, putting them on track to open a Loop Station in 2024. For now, access to the Boring Company's Loop, colloquially known as the “TeslaTunnels,” is limited to Convention Center attendees. So could expanding the Loop actually become a feasible alternative to public transit, or help reduce congestion on our busy streets? Today, we're bringing you a conversation that co-host Dayvid Figler had in February with urban design expert Ray Delahanty (AKA City Nerd). Spoiler alert: The takes are hot, and the Loop doesn't come out looking so great. How do you feel about the Loop expanding in Las Vegas? Elon Musk's New Underground Transit System in Las Vegas and Trouble at a California Nursing Home Chain

The Daily Dive

Elon Musk and his Boring Company has a new public transit system built 40 feet under the Las Vegas Convention Center. It cost $52 million and reduces a 15 minute walk to just under a couple of minutes as you ride in a Telsa through tunnels at about 35 mph. It's a proof of concept that will soon be expanded as the city of Las Vegas and Clark County are going to also develop the “Vegas Loop,” a 15 mile system with stations at local resorts and attractions. Rick Velotta, gaming and tourism reporter at the Las Vegas Review-Journal, joins us for more. Next, throughout the pandemic, nursing homes have been under more scrutiny as outbreaks were happening in these facilities that were understaffed and housed some of our most vulnerable citizens. In California, death and neglect was found inside a troubled nursing home chain called ReNew Health. Their CEO applied to operate nine new facilities and was denied because of all of the violations at her other facilities, but in a weird twist, she is still operating those very facilities because of licensing loopholes. Elly Yu, investigative reporter at KPCC and LAist.com, joins us to talk about the flawed system allowing this to happen.
