The tourism slump in Las Vegas is showing financial impacts, metro shares an update on safety for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, self-dricing cars are no longer a thing of the future for the Vegas Loop and more on 7@7.

The Boring Company, a tunneling firm founded by Elon Musk, received a fine of about $500,000 for dumping wastewater at two sites across its Las Vegas project, Fortune reported.Musk's company wants to build a network of tunnels beneath cities to decrease traffic congestion. The company's website mentions that it has received approval for 68 miles of tunnel and 104 stations for its Vegas Loop.However, Clark County Water Reclamation District (CCWRD) reportedly caught the company dumping fluids and spoils into two manholes and two on-site cleanouts. A notice of violation cited by Fortune stated that the actions led to “substantial damage” and required water agency crews to clean 12 cubic yards of mud, spoils and solid waste from a sewage treatment facility.

City Cast's new investigation, co-published with ProPublica, reveals new details about the so-called "Tesla tunnels" running under our city: When Elon Musk's Boring Company came to Las Vegas in 2019, its tunneling projects in other cities had already fizzled out after environmental reviews and public outcry. But here, with the backing of the powerful Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Boring Co. won a bid to build the Vegas Loop, a tunnel system for ferrying convention-goers around in underground Teslas — and it's since won approval from local government entities for 68 miles of tunnels. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Dayvid Figler and journalist Daniel Rothberg co-authored a new investigation for ProPublica about how the Boring Co. has advanced a sprawling transit system with little public oversight and input, despite the fines and environmental incidents it's racked up since the project began. While Marketplace’s Lily Jamali was at CES last week in Las Vegas, she took her first ride on the Vegas Loop, built by Elon Musk’s the Boring Co. In 2013, Musk floated the concept of a hyperloop as a way for people to travel long distances at superfast speeds via pods in vacuum-sealed tubes. The Vegas Loop, as Lily found out, is not that. Developing actual hyperloop technology is hard and costly. Just ask Hyperloop One, a startup that recently shut down after a decade of trying. Lily recently spoke with Bloomberg’s Sarah McBride about Hyperloop One’s demise and what it means for the tech sector’s larger ambition to create hyperloop transport systems.
