One common piece of career advice is to “follow your heart”—that is, pursue what you love and chase your passions. While this may be great advice at 40, it can be downright misleading at 20, as what works in one season of life may not apply in the next. In this episode, Daniel Sih and Matt Bain continue their exploration of career resets as the years go by. We'll discuss the importance of building career capital through deliberate practice and the value of “actively doing nothing” to uncover your life's meaning.Resources: GET A FREE SUMMARY OF SEASON 2 with print-ready activitiesLIFEPLANSTRENGTHSKAIROS MOMENTS VIDEODiscover more:SPACEMAKERS WEBSITEYOUTUBERAISING TECH HEALTHY HUMANSThis season is made possible with support from our sponsors: Banjo's Bakery CafesThis podcast is recorded and produced by Production Farm StudiosMentioned in this episode:Banjo's Bakery Café's - FRANCHISEES 1A warm thanks to our sponsor, Banjo's Bakery Café's, who are expanding across Australia and looking for new franchisee's! What does it truly mean to be productive and accomplish the right things? The answer evolves with age. In our 20s, embracing new experiences and saying "yes" often helps build skills and confidence. However, by our 40s, the focus shifts towards saying "no" more frequently, prioritising our limited time and energy on what truly matters. In this episode, Daniel Sih and Matt Bain dive into the science of productivity, drawing from over a decade of global coaching and consulting experience. The world is certainly speeding up. The rate of change, the pace of change and technological advances are all increasing. As a practice owner, are you constantly thinking about your team dynamics and the structures or issues going on between people. You're possibly also thinking about your business (and personal) finances, your tax, payroll tax, approaching EOFY. Sometimes the list becomes so long it can be overwhelming. How do you reconcile that sense of overwhelm? How do you overcome overwhelm so that you can continue to move forward and achieve the goals that are really important to you? In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, Dr. Jesse Green introduces you to Daniel Sih, a productivity expert. Daniel has a framework for all of us around developing and maintaining productivity and creating ‘space' within your day to ensure you maintain a sense of sanity as you grow your practice. Daniel Sih is an award-winning author, professional speaker, and productivity consultant, leading the team at Spacemakers. Daniel co-founded Spacemakers, a productivity consulting group, where he serves as a key leader and thinker. Spacemakers offers workshops, coaching, and resources that aim to address the modern challenges of digital overload and workplace efficiency. Daniel explains how his framework can be applied. [38:29] - How to apply the productivity framework you've just learned in everyday life and business.

In this episode of "A Magical Life" podcast, host Magic Barclay interviews Daniel Sih, the author of "Spacemaker: How to Unplug, Unwind, and Think Clearly in the Digital Age." Daniel shares his journey of discovering the impact of digital overuse on our mental health, relationships, and overall well-being. He emphasizes the need to create intentional space in our lives by setting limits on technology use, planning patterns of unplugging, assigning rest before work, cultivating face-to-face relationships, and embracing silence for deep thought. Daniel's book provides practical tips and strategies to help individuals live a more balanced and holistic life in the digital age.Key Takeaways:The messages embedded within our devices shape the way we think and act. We need to be aware of the impact of technology on our worldview and habits.Digital power is inherited and requires intentional use for positive impact. We should consider how we can use our digital power to help others.Too much freedom and unlimited choice can be problematic. Setting life-giving limits on technology use leads to long-term freedom.Adopting patterns of rest, relationships, and deep thought creates space for the things that matter in our lives. The SPACE principles (Set Limits, Plan Patterns, Assign Rest before Work, Cultivate Community, Embrace Silence) guide us in creating intentional space in the digital age.Daniel is an award-winning author, TEDx speaker and productivity expert with 20 years experience working in senior leadership and strategic consulting roles across Australia and the UK. In this episode, I distill four themes gleaned from interviewing my first 100 guests.#1: Self-care is non-negotiable & yes you do have time. #2: There is joy to be found in exploring new & different ways of thinking.#3: Productivity is a choice. Where you are going to be productive & how productive you are going to be is in your hands.#4: Curiosity makes life way more interesting.Practical tips:1. Start your day with a morning routine - even 10 minutes will have an impact (see episode #3).2. Delete all Social Media apps from your phone.3. Articulate a philosophy around technology by asking how it aligns with your values & then make changes - like #4 & #5.4. Delete social media accounts that aren't serving you.5. Claim an honest day of rest (Daniel's book: https://amzn.to/3iEzHkT) 6. Learn to say NO (episode #71).7. Remember that productivity is a choice.8. When memories take precedence over school/work goals enjoy those times - don't beat yourself up for not meeting goals that can wait.9. Set a schedule that capitalizes on your personally productive hours10. Get curious when you are triggered and ask “Isn't this interesting?” Or, “I wonder what I might be learning here?” My Mantras:1. Monique is a Happiness Strategist who teaches students and corporations around the world how to master their lives. Are you ready to transform your well-being? Highlights1. The primary source of suffering is your mind – this means you can take control of your happiness (yay!)2. You are not alone – most people are struggling with anxiety, depression, and feelings of overwhelm3. Consider our environment – currently there are things socially/culturally working against us 4. Your “smart” phone is designed to keep you in a state of anxiety – what behaviors around electronics could you change to increase your well-being?5. What other ways can you change your relationship around technology? See links below for podcasts that may help you dig deep into this question (they transformed my life!) 6. Exercise is key to being happy - move that body (bonus if you do it outside)7. Ask yourself (really stop and think): Where am I living? Am I in the stressful fantasy worlds of the past and future?8. Meditate (see links below for more on this) so you can spend more time in the present and therefore dissolve much of your anxiety, depression and stress9. Meditation also allows you the opportunity to know your mind (this is HUGE!)10. When starting a meditation practice, find someone who can mentor you (Monique's info below)11. In this conversation, Karl Vaters talks to Daniel Sih about the information in his recent book, Spacemaker: How to Unplug, Unwind and Think Clearly in the Digital Age. Specifically, we address three areas that are having a massive effect on our lives and ministries: Clutter Neuroplasticity The stories we tell In our increasingly tech-driven world, the technology that used to be (and still can be) so helpful is now causing significant changes to the way we work, worship, live, communicate and even the way our brains are wired. And many of these changes are not good. But the news is not all bad. Daniel offers great Bible-based insights into how we can acknowledge these challenges, offer a far better alternative, and minister in ways that answer people's deepest needs. But first, we need to get and stay healthy, ourselves. Stop living by the world's stories, and find ourselves immersed in the bigger, better story God is telling. “Productivity changes as you get older and what you really want to aim for and how you do it shifts as well.” – Daniel Sih In this episode of The Modern Man, I welcome Daniel Sih, an award-winning productivity author, speaker, entrepreneur, father, and husband. Daniel teaches people how to rethink their relationship with technology and shift their work and life habits to be more productive. Essentially, he focuses on how to get the right things done in a meaningful, directional way. Are you mastering your tech tools or are they mastering you? Regardless of your answer, it's likely time for you to begin making pace and making space in your life. We need space in the whirlwind of life to live our best life and to fully experience the world 2. Seasons (6 months to a year) of intentional imbalance are a part of life (note the word “intentional” and the concept of a “set period of time”; being stretched thin for more than a year will not serve you)3. Remember: You are more than your work/doctoral program!4. Learning how to rest is an investment, not just in terms of productivity and creativity but in terms of a meaningful human experience5. Mind wandering is important (give those “ah-ha” moments a space to appear), and if being alone with your thoughts is difficult, explore unresolved trauma with a professional6. Resting takes practice (be compassionate with yourself as you develop this skill)7. Implementing a day of rest can be a game-changer (see free downloads above)8. Know when technology is working for you…and when it is mastering you! 9. You do not need to be anti-tech to find value in unplugging from it 10. Don't forget you are human and you don't need to justify having meaningful human interaction, enjoying the sunshine, reading books, and feeding your mind with joyful thingsSome questions to ask yourself:· Have you taken time to develop a philosophy around technology?· Are you OK with letting your mind just wander? (remember the averse shock study?)· Are you ready to live life from the inside out (rather than the outside in?)· What small thing can you do to start making space in your life?Get The Happy Doc Student Handbook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578333732Other resources at: http://Expandyourhappy.com Support this free content: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/expandyourhappyWant to make my day? Screen time. It's the new currency utilized when measuring how our children spend much of their time interacting with the world. With the holiday season upon us, many of us will be giving the gift of technical access to the young ones throughout our lives. Spreading accessibility to gadgets, games, and even communication or learning devices. Yet, with this gift comes empowering access to a connected world of data, influence, and interaction. A world that inevitably might also contain what is sometimes more adverse and insidious in nature - Childhood Screen addiction. The present world is now largely digital. From checking social media on our phones to gaming or binging a new show -it's hard to escape this cultural norm. What would our lives be like if we had time everyday where we disconnected, not just from our phones, but from our computers, our televisions, our iwatches. Would we feel a sense of relief at the ability to disconnect and just be present in our non digital surroundings? Think about all the things we do with our phones- calling, texting, emailing, navigating, booking ubers, listening to podcasts or audiobooks or the news, watching youtube, listening to music, playing video games, taking photograms, and, not least of all participating in social media. It's tied to everything we do, and don't do - it's by our beside when we sleep, we never leave the house without it - because if we did we'd certainly miss it and stress out about not having it. So. How do we establish annual, weekly and daily practices of self-care by unplugging from technology as a habit? Listen in as I talk with Danieh Sih, a trainer, coach and an author of Spacemaker - How to Unplug, Unwind and Think Clearly in the Digital Age", a book which won the Australian Business Book Award in 2021, to talk about how to establish healthy digital boundaries.
