Dan Stine is Director of Design Technology at Lake|Flato Architects. You could also say he wrote the book on architecture–or at least the top-selling textbook on Revit. As if that weren't enough, he teaches graduate architecture classes and is active with Committee on the Environment (COTE).We start out with a brief overview of Dan's work with COTE. Then we ask Dan to share about some of the technology he has had the opportunity to explore in his various roles. Dan discusses Tonic DM, a tool for email management and file-sharing management. Dan explains that he has found the cloud-based service to be stable and reliable. It also assists with the handling of project-management information. Tyler asks about Revit plugins and other time-savers. Dan says that Enscape has become widely used within his firm. He also discusses Forma (formerly called Spacemaker), which is especially helpful with wind and solar installations. We explore generative AI software, and Dan mentions that Enscape integrates some AI. He geeks out on some processing core technologies. Dan shares about UpCodes, a searchable platform for building codes that dramatically expedites code research. UpCodes saves time by integrating amendments based on local jurisdictions. As we discuss AI, Tyler shares his exploration of Adobe Photoshop's AI integration, adding lamps and furniture. He was impressed.Tyler asks Dan to discuss the challenges of integrating new technologies. Dan says that the most important thing is evaluating the software to ensure that it's worthy of being added to the team's repertoire. Once a tool makes it through that step, deployment and support becomes easier to systematize. It's all about ensuring that qualified people are available to instruct and support those who will be using the tool.Dan shares a bit about the Dell Latitude tablets that he and his team used in a recent video shoot with Tyler. Then he runs through the array of equipment Lake|Flato uses to support its hybrid-work structure. Data-security geeks will be interested to hear the VPN/work-station/server configuration he describes. He shares about Lake|Flato's hybrid structure and how it is supported by their use of FlowScape virtual office spaces.Tyler explains how the video editing for the podcast will be changing based on the things he learned during the video shoot with Dan.Dan's Megaphone Message: Thanks for creating all the crazy stuff that architects design. He looks forward to developing new means and methods that can lower the carbon footprint of projects. He's also eager to incorporate some cool technology in that process. Here's the video Tyler produced with Dan. We're constantly bombarded with distractions and notifications in the tech world, and it takes bravery to make space in our lives, no matter which stage we're in. In fact, an average American male has spent 10,000 hours of online gaming by the time they're 21. 10,000 is the magic number for self-mastery of anything, yet what we're mastering is online games or social media. It's time we stop becoming over-reliant on technology and allowing low-value digital activity to shape the texture of our lives, and intentionally create that space to grow and become our best selves. In today's episode, I'm speaking with Daniel Sih, an award-winning author, productivity expert, and TEDx speaker. His company, Spacemaker, teaches people how to make space, and to think, rest, plan, and live differently by shifting the way they work. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: The business of teaching productivity The material that led to his book, “Spacemaker” The skill of “Resetting” in life Why Space is important in every stage of life Why tomorrow's leader should train their brains to focus and not be distracted by tech every few minutes Now, for some action steps: To get started on Your Encore journey, sign up for my resource: 5 Key Questions to Ask Yourself if You Want a Successful Mindset Daniel's website: https://spacemakers.com.au/ Grab a copy of Daniel's book, “Spacemaker: How to Unplug, Unwind and Think Clearly in the Digital Age” Connect with Me: LinkedIn Facebook Please leave a Rating and Review: Since this podcast is new, I'm asking for Apple Podcasts reviews. Do you look at your phone when you are bored? Tik Tok or a game? Is it making you happy? Connecting with people is overwhelmingly shown to create happiness. That doesn't really happen when we are spending more and more time online. Digital wellness in the workplace is becoming an increasingly important aspect of wellness. As we spend more and more time on our devices, it's helping drive burn out, stress, and anxiety. Obviously this will have a negative impact on the well-being and productivity of workplaces. The first of my guests, Daniel Sih and author of Spacemaker, has been invited to speak at TedX and his 'idea worth sharing' is that we need to manage our use of tech. He laughs, a little amazed, because most of us remember a life before this level of tech and yet we have become so dependent so fast. And now it's an idea worth sharing. Elissa Lok, my second guest and HR Consultant, helped Daniel develop a Spacemaker course and reflects on the impact in organizations. Some other ideas:

Buildings are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The $5.8 trillion-a-year building and construction sector, including ongoing operations of buildings, is responsible for 38% of the world's energy-related CO2 emissions according to the United Nations' Environment Program. Meet Håvard Haukeland, cofounder of Autodesk Spacemaker and a senior director at Autodesk, the pioneer and leading provider of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and other design tools used by architects and builders — Autodesk's tools also power many of the breakthroughs in animation and special effects. Spacemaker is an artificial intelligence platform that can analyze architectural designs to identify potential improvements that reduce a building's power requirements during its operational life. The tool was introduced in October, and it works with other Autodesk tools to speed the green design process and enable efficiencies during construction. The International Energy Agency estimates that emissions associated with construction and buildings needs to fall by 6% a year until 2030 if humanity is to avoid crossing the Paris Accord's target 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold that represents increased likelihood of disastrous climate impacts and extreme weather. And we are not making the necessary progress despite the fact green buildings are projected to account for $24.7 trillion in new construction by 2030. Architects and contractors need better tools to design and test buildings, plan efficient building projects, and optimize the use of materials while minimizing waste. Spacemaker's operational energy analysis reviews a building design, predicts operational energy use as the architect works, and suggests energy efficiency improvements provided by different types of insulation or different kinds of windows based on the dimensions of the entire building. In episode #107 of Productivity Mastery, we talk about something that we're all affected by - the vast advancement in technology from the last couple of years. But luckily, Daniel Sih is here to show us how to become a SPACEMAKER in the Digital Age. He shared a lot of valuable facts and lessons, including:
Daniel Sih runs a productivity consulting group for entrepreneurs and overwhelmed executives. He is also the author of “Spacemaker: How to Unplug, Unwind and Think Clearly in the Digital Age.” His message is a forceful but empathetic look at how technology changes our brains, and the simple things we can do to reclaim our humanity, family, and life. Daniel's work focuses on helping high achievers make space in their world for the things that really matter. Daniel shares his thoughts on wealth and the goal to be rich as opposed to look rich. How much wealth do we need, and what are the hidden costs of working more to pass on wealth to our children? And how to raise children in a world in which they are overwhelmed by the dopamine temptations of too much screen time. “Technology wears it's benefits on its sleeve, while its drawbacks are buried deep within.”
In the digital age, many of us feel distracted and overwhelmed. We need to rethink our relationship with the online world to make space for what really matters. In this segment, Daniel Sih shares how to increase productivity by doing less. You can do so by making space in the digital age by unplugging from technology as a habit. “We're building a city the size of Paris each week, so every non-optimal project that's built today is a missed opportunity for changing the world” –– this is one of the reasons why Carl Christensen founded an AI-driven architectural design startup, Spacemaker. The company raised over $30 million, was declared a startup of the year in Norway and was acquired for $240 million in just 4 years. On this episode of the Startup Exits Podcast, we chat with Carl about: • What's wrong with how cities are built? • What's the result of non-optimal urban planning? • How's urban planning done today? • Startup ecosystem in Norway • Where else can AI-driven design be valuable? • Will AI replace architects? Forge for manufacturing. ¿Quieres escuchar otro episodio?
