In this episode, Lyndsay Soprano speaks with J.K. Emezi, from Elevated Recovery, a Pornography Addiction Reboot program. They discuss how his struggle with pornography addiction led him down a dark and twisted journey. He was consumed by the addiction, was unable to establish intimate relationships, focus on academics or employment, or manage his emotions.Coming from a deep conservative upbringing and repression of emotions that needed to be released, his addiction continued to spiral until he was out of control.Out of the darkness rose this incredible man who has gone from poverty, addiction, extremely low self-esteem, and depression to HAPPINESS and financial success. And is no longer under the guise of pleasure and pain worshipping. He removed his fears and rebooted! He is in the driver's seat, and he has a pretty sweet view. Thanks for joining me, man. In Episode 109, Gen and Jette discuss Pet by Akwaeke Emezi. We absolutely loved this one and are now planning on reading everything Emezi has written, including Bitter, the prequel story to Pet. Show Notes: This episode is in keeping with our annual December tradition of replacing a discussion about a certain series featuring a certain boy wizard in favour of queer, and especially trans, stories. Check out last year's discussion of A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee, and our episode on Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas from the year before that. The name of the poem by Dylan Thomas featuring the line "rage against the dying of the light" is called "Do not go gentle into that good night." Another poem that Gen loves is, "In my craft or sullen art." The radio play that she has yet to read is called Under Milk Wood. Emezi's novel You Made A Fool of Death with Your Beauty, their first romance, is partially inspired by Florence + The Machine's song "Hunger." That might be enough for us to give romance a try. When Vivek Oji is born, his parents are surprised to find he has a scar that resembles a starfish. What’s surprising, though, is that his grandmother -- who died on the day of his birth -- had the same scar. “It tells them about reincarnation, which they are a little afraid to believe,” said author Akwaeke Emezi in conversation with MPR News host Kerri Miller. “I had written it like that because I’ve been really interested, since ‘Freshwater,’ about Igbo spirituality and the ways in which we’re disconnected from it in a contemporary sense.”  “The Death of Vivek Oji” is set in southeastern Nigeria during the 1980s and ’90s. Emezi weaves a tale about the death of the title character, while also looking at grief, different types of love and the search for self. Emezi spoke with Miller about the inspiration for the book.

Our guest for today's episode is Akwaeke Emezi, the author of the new YA novel Pet, which is a finalist for this year's National Book Award for Young People's Literature.  Emezi burst onto the literary scene with their novel Freshwater, a powerful story of a young woman inhabited by multiple spirits, and her journey to understanding her many-sided self.  Now, writing for Christopher Myers's Make Me a World YA imprint, Akwaeke brings us the story of Jam, a teenager living in the city of Lucille, a community that prides itself on having been through a revolutionary change — one that eliminated what are known as monsters — those who abused, imprisoned, or did violence to others; where a black trans girl like Jam lives in a happy community with her loving parents Bitter and Aloe.  But when Jam accidentally invokes the magic that lies dormant in her mother's powerful artwork, a strange being emerges, one that calls itself Pet.  Pet is a hunter and it has come, it tells Jam, because there are still monsters in Lucille.  I talked with Akwaeke Emezi about this ingenious and spellbinding tale, and their lifetime of making worlds out of story.
