To this end, Delta has signed a string of SAF deals across the US and is also working with SAF producers in several states to increase supply of this so-far scarce type of fuel. Delta intends to use 10% of SAF in its fuel mix by 2030 and to increase this figure to 35% by 2035. But this is not the only path to decarbonization that Delta is exploring. In fact, when it comes to sustainability, Delta is active on so many fronts that it has created the Delta Sustainable Skies Lab to gather all its sustainability-focused initiatives under one roof. Remarkably, just as Delta is marking its centenary, it is also actively investing in technologies that promise to re-shape the way to travel in the next 100 years. The company works with fuel suppliers and carriers to issue transparent and externally verified environmental attribute certificates, including SAF certificates, used by airlines and cargo operators to reduce their transport-related Scope 3 emissions. Jeroen discusses the sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) market, focusing on carbon insetting, the role of SAF registries, and the importance of transparency and standardization in the industry. He explains how carbon insetting differs from carbon offsetting, emphasizing the need for companies to invest in their value chain de-carbonization. The discussion also covers the digital certificate process, the collaboration between 123Carbon and IATA, and future trends in the SAF market. 123Carbon's registry is integrated with other IT systems and allows an airline to upload documents and manage its inventory of digital certificates online. It's a multi-modal agnostic platform that can be branded. With the use of sustainable bio-fuel growing in the land and sea modes of transportation, the accounting needs to be integrated with air. 123Carbon recently introduced Carboninsets.com, a free service for forwarders and cargo owners that connects them with issuers on the registry. Jeroen set-up and led Accenture's Sustainability Services Benelux and wrote the CDP NL 50 report in 2010. He has 15 years of experience with multi-modal carbon insetting programs, covering both Air (KLM corporate biofuels Program) and Marine (the GoodShipping Program). He holds a master's in business administration from Tilburg University. Takeaways: Carbon insetting is a more effective long-term approach than offsetting. Alice Henry, co-founder of Regenrate, took a deep dive into why cover crops, which provide amazing benefits to farmers and farmland, are not more widely used. No big surprise—it's about the money. Planting cover crops costs money, and the business model of carbon credits isn't enough to nudge farmers.Enter the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) market, where there is both money and massive demand due to changing European and global regulations. That means working with big oil majors and helping fossil fuel giants decarbonize. But aviation, in particular, needs to decarbonize quickly. The aerospace industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, driven by record demand for commercial jets, defence programmes and space exploration. To seize this opportunity, suppliers must find ways to ramp up output without compromising quality, innovation, or cost. By Will Stirling The biggest hurdle facing the aerospace industry is how to scale up production. Airlines are investing heavily in new fleets, governments are increasing spending on advanced defence systems, and private companies are pushing the frontiers of space exploration and satellite technology. While this growth is a welcome rebound after years of turbulence, it has exposed bottlenecks in the supply chain, exacerbated by rising operational costs, material shortages and evolving regulatory requirements. Nowhere is this challenge clearer than in the commercial aircraft backlog, which has ballooned to nearly 16,000 planes – valued at more than £250bn for the UK alone. At current production rates, clearing this backlog could take over a decade. Meanwhile, demand continues to climb as airlines place hundreds of new orders yearly. Yet, this pressure brings opportunity. “The fact I can't name another industry with a 10-year-plus backlog worth over US$1.5 trillion globally shows just how massive the growth trend is,” says Balaji Srimoolanathan, Director for Aerospace, Space and the Aerospace Growth Partnership at ADS. “The primes and top tiers are diversifying their suppliers, sustainability is becoming ever-more critical, and new technologies are accessible and affordable. There is more business to be won by a greater number of suppliers than ever before, adding up to more opportunities, particularly for those with the right tools and technologies in place.” Srimoolanathan explains that the key to unlocking these opportunities lies in integrating advanced capabilities, such as intelligent manufacturing systems, into today's production processes. This move has been proven to drive greater efficiency and agility without comprising stringent quality standards. Digital Innovation in Action As production ramps up, shortages of critical components like semiconductors, electronics and raw materials like aluminium and titanium continue to cause delays. The pandemic's ripple effects are still being felt, slowing assembly lines and affecting deliveries. Even seemingly minor components, such as fasteners, are in short supply. Recognising this, LISI Aerospace partnered with the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) to explore how digital tools can drive process improvements. Together, they developed a cutting-edge smart production line at LISI's Rugby facility. The pilot line integrates five connected factory machines, each handling a distinct process. Key innovations include sensor data and data analytics to predict component quality, alongside an expanded apprenticeship programme to support new roles like software developers and data analysts. The result is a more than 100% performance improvement, enabling the Rugby site to hit record turnover and win additional contracts worth over £2m. The project also spurred a dedicated process development department, created a dozen new jobs and paved the way for a further £6.5m investment to implement two more connected production lines by 2027. An AMRC spokesperson said the project demonstrates how industrial digital technologies can transform operations. The success has ‘set a new benchmark for fastener production processes' and clearly shows the potential of technology-driven innovation in aerospace. Process Improvements Within Constraints While LISI's collaboration showcases the benefits of innovation, industry-wide progress is often hampered by a reliance on established processes and materials. “The industry is built on aircraft and parts certified to specific production techniques, many of which were designed decades ago,” explains Andrew Mair, Chief Executive of the Midlands Aerospace Alliance (MAA). While this reliance on legacy methods may limit flexibility in core manufacturing processes, there's significant scope for improvements in areas that run parallel to assembly. Upgrading to integrated software platforms for production planning, resource management and inventory tracking, for example, is an area where many smaller manufacturers lag, yet can unlock substantial efficiency gains. Similarly, using robotics and automation to move materials or load machines can streamline operations and reduce manual labour and downtime. Design innovations also hold promise. Advances in simulation and digital twin technologies allow suppliers to optimise components and assemblies before physical production, compressing design cycles and identifying potential issues earlier. Generative design, where AI-driven software explores thousands of potential configurations, is helping create lighter, stronger, more cost-efficient components. Combined with additive manufacturing, suppliers can prototype and produce highly complex parts faster and, importantly, with significantly less waste than traditional ‘subtractive' machining. For instance, Airbus and Autodesk have used generative design and additive manufacturing to produce the world's largest 3D-printed cabin component. Inspired by cellular structures and bone growth, the latticed partition to separate the passenger cabin from the galley is structurally as strong as conventional designs but 45% (30kg) lighter. When scaled to the entire cabin, Airbus estimates that the new design approach could save up to 465,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. Government Backing Fuels Further Investment Recognising the transformative potential of advanced technologies, recent government announcements are geared towards accelerating adoption. One such initiative is the expansion of Made Smarter, an industry-government programme aimed at helping SME manufacturers adopt technology and build digital skills. Since its 2019 launch in the North West, Made Smarter has engaged with 2,500 manufacturers, funded over 330 technology projects, created more than 1,500 jobs and upskilled nearly 2,800 workers. Its upcoming national rollout to all nine English regions by 2025/26, followed by Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland in 2026/27, will extend those benefits to thousands of manufacturers across the UK. “The programme has proven the value technology and digital skills can bring,” says Donna Edwards, Director of Made Smarter NW, who described the national roll-out as “a huge vote of confidence in the contribution SMEs make to UK manufacturing.” Additionally, the government's announcement of £975m to extend the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) programme to 2030 was welcomed – although many favoured a longer-term commitment. With matching industry contributions, the funding will exceed £2bn, providing critical support for ultra-efficient and zero-carbon technologies. “This support for R&D is crucial at a time the sector is ramping up rates to meet today's demand while delivering ambitious technology programmes to bring next-generation aircraft technologies to reality,” says Gary Elliott, CEO of ATI. Plotting a Sustainable Flight Path The UK is making significant strides in sustainable aviation. The latest development saw a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate come into force on New Year's Day. The mandate requires that 2% of UK jet fuel demand be met by SAF, rising to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040—delivering up to 6.3 megatons of carbon savings annually. The mandate will be bolstered by the introduction of a revenue certainty mechanism to de-risk investments in new SAF plants and provide the confidence needed to scale domestic production. The potential of hydrogen-powered aviation is also gaining momentum, with Russ Dunn, GKN Aerospace CTO, recently named as the new chair of the Hydrogen in Aviation Alliance. The HIA's first major report, published in 2024, outlined a clear roadmap for industry and government to drive adoption. Yet, realising this vision requires more robust support for R&D, particularly within the manufacturing supply chain. Andrew Mair explains that nearly all the R&D support currently goes to large corporations or start-ups, leaving the existing supply chain underserved. “We need more regionalised support, particularly for clusters like the Midlands Aerospace Alliance, to ensure small companies get the backing they need.” Srimoolanathan of ADS underscores that aerospace is uniquely positioned to deliver immediate and long-term benefits for the UK economy. “The backlog presents an opportunity for short-term growth, job creation and technological advancement,” he says. “But this hinges on balancing the immediate demands of today with strategic investments in areas like zero-emission technologies. With sustained support, the UK can maintain its position as a global aerospace leader while delivering tangible economic and environmental benefits.”

Aisling Kenny, CFO of SMBC Aviation Capital, has built a notable career in the aviation leasing sector. In this episode, we talk to Mark Edwards, Head of Sustainability at London Gatwick. As one of the busiest airports in Europe, Gatwick has set an ambitious target to achieve net zero emissions by 2030, 20 years ahead of the UK's national target.Edwards discusses Gatwick's multi-faceted approach to sustainability, which includes addressing Scope 1 and 2 emissions through the use of renewable electricity, transitioning away from fossil fuels through the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and gradually converting their vehicle fleet to electric. He also touches upon the challenges of reducing Scope 3 emissions, which primarily come from airline operations and are outside the airport's direct control.Edwards elaborates on Gatwick's role in supporting sustainable aviation initiatives. He highlights the airport's efforts to increase the supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the region, engage passengers about carbon offsetting and SAF, advocate for government support, and potentially incentivise airlines to use more SAF. In addition, Edwards also shares Gatwick's preparations to support the future use of hydrogen and electric-powered aircraft, emphasising the importance of collaboration with airlines and manufacturers to ensure the airport is “jet zero ready.” Please note: This interview was recorded in January 2024. On a mid-May afternoon in 2020, Lauren Kriegler sat in her home office and scribbled a warning to her young kids—who were in the thick of remote learning—on a Post-It Note and stuck it to her office door: “Important call. Do not come in!”For five years at Alaska Airlines, Kriegler had led a massive project to overhaul the uniforms provided to its 20,000+ frontline employees—five years building a program from raw materials to design and development, inventory planning and distribution, and ultimately the culmination of a rollout during the early stages of the pandemic. This included multiple visits to China to get closer to the supply chain, as well as the integration of industry-leading textile safety standards, leading Alaska to be the first North American carrier to integrate Oeko-Tex into a custom supply chain. Along the way, Kriegler led additional teams, including retail operations, freight and logistics, and print programs. As the uniform program launched and was moving to steady state, she was starting to think about her next challenge.Now, as the Teams window on her computer flashed open to her weekly tie-in with her boss, she was confronting what might come next: leading the fuel program for the airline as director of fuel—an area of the business where she had no experience. It was a role fraught with challenge and opportunity that started with the consolidation of two departments, the lack of a hand-off from her predecessors in the role and a massive learning curve.Once she assumed the role that July of 2020, she would see planes get fueled for the first time, spend time on the ramp learning the operation and become quickly immersed in the complexities of the oil and refining markets and supply chains. She openly acknowledged with internal and external partners that at many times she had more questions than answers.She worked diligently to overcome her learning curve in order to prepare the fuel program to support the airline's emergence from the pandemic, both operationally and financially. Through all of these learnings, she also started to wrap her arms around an initially small but critical component of the fuel program: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)—something that as the months went by would become a much more significant focus of her day-to-day role. By the end of her first year and what Kriegler called a “brutal summer,” she had confronted all that and more, including a Mother's Day 2021 alert to the Colonial Pipeline shutdown, wildfires, labor shortages, extreme weather and other external events that buffeted fuel supply chain operations.“I've only known volatility,” Kriegler said. “During that first summer, I remember thinking (that) how I navigated that summer's seemingly never-ending challenges would shape my future at Alaska as an operational leader. I was determined not just to get through it, but to establish an industry-leading program that was resilient and intentional. The average price for Dec24 corn in February was $4.66 per bushel, down sharply from last year's $5.91, while the Nov24 soybean contract averaged $11.55 per bushel, a notable decrease from last year's $13.76. These lower insurance levels pose challenges for many US row crop operations, as they now fall below the cost of production, unlike last year's levels that mostly exceeded production costs.Meanwhile, the Biden administration's delay in climate modeling for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) feedstocks has raised concerns within the ethanol industry. The administration's decision to revise the climate modeling, particularly regarding verification methods for climate-smart agriculture practices, may impact the industry's eligibility for SAF tax credits. As a result, alternative methods such as solar energy and sustainable farming may need to be adopted to qualify.In the commodities market, fund traders maintain a historically large net short position across the corn and soybean complex. Weekly Commitment of Traders data released by the CFTC shows "the funds" holding a net short of 288k contracts in corn and 151k contracts in soybeans, reflecting significant bearish sentiment. However, fund traders were net buyers of 41k contracts of corn during the week ending February 27.Brazil's soybean forecast witnessed opposing revisions last week, with StoneX raising its estimate to 151.5 million tons while AgResource significantly reduced its projection to 143.92 million tons. The adjustments were influenced by recent weather patterns and yield fluctuations. Both groups also lowered their outlook for Brazil's corn crop, citing various factors impacting production.In the oil market, OPEC+ extended its voluntary oil supply cuts until the end of June, aiming to stabilize prices and prevent a global surplus. There are no two ways around it: 2023 was a difficult year for low-carbon energy investment, and 2024 has so far carried on in very much the same vein.Rising interest rates, fears around future energy policy, cost inflation in some sectors, and perhaps a correction to some earlier over-exuberance, have meant that shares in clean energy companies have generally under-performed the market.To take a couple of high-profile examples, Tesla shares have fallen about 55% from their peak in 2021, while Ørsted shares are down about 75%.Capital flows into climate-focused funds has also fallen sharply. Morningstar data suggested that climate-focused funds attracted about $38 billion of new investor money last year, down about 75% from 2021 levels. In the private markets, on the venture capital side, the flows into clean energy also seem to have fallen, if not quite as sharply.To examine the reasons why low-carbon energy investment is having a rough time of it at the moment, and explore some of the more positive indications in the outlook, host Ed Crooks and regular guest Amy Myers-Jaffe are joined this week by newcomer Dan Goldman, Co-Founder & Managing Partner of Clean Energy Ventures. Rain is forecast to return by Tuesday next week, with central and northern areas expected to receive better amounts through Christmas. The extended Global Forecast System (GFS) suggests additional rainfall for some areas by year-end but may not be reliable.Ethanol Producers Awaiting SAF Credit Approval:Ethanol producers are anticipating a victory with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) tax credits. The Biden administration is expected to approve the Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation (GREET) model, allowing ethanol-based SAF to qualify for tax credits. However, the administration is also expected to update the GREET methodology by March 1, potentially impacting the use of corn-based ethanol in SAF. Regulations around SAF feedstocks are expected to tighten.Record-High Electric Vehicle (EV) Inventories:US EV inventories on dealer lots have doubled compared to a year ago, resulting in a 114-day supply. Consumers have been deterred from EVs due to their high cost and inadequate charging infrastructure. Major automakers like Ford and GM are reducing production of some EV models. A group of US auto dealers has requested the Biden administration to reduce EV mandates because of the large inventories.Rainfall in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas:Rainfall moved over Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas recently, with up to 2.5 inches recorded in parts of the Texas panhandle and northward regions. This rainfall is much needed, as many areas have been experiencing drought conditions to varying degrees. Kansas rated the winter wheat crop at 39% good to excellent in its final crop progress report for the year.Declining Mortgage Rates:Mortgage rates in the US have declined for seven consecutive weeks, with the average 30-year mortgage rate falling to 6.95%, the lowest since August. Rates peaked in October at 7.8%. The Fed's forecast of rate cuts in 2024 is expected to push mortgage rates near or below 6%. Lower rates are expected to boost home sales, which have slowed significantly due to rising rates.US Grain Export Sales:US corn export sales improved last week, with net sales of 1.4 million metric tons (56 million bushels), up 10% from the previous week. Net soybean sales of 1.1 million metric tons (40 million bushels) were down 23% from the previous week. Net wheat sales were strong, totaling 1.5 million metric tons (55 million bushels), a marketing year high.Flash Sale of Soybeans Reported by USDA:US exporters reported a flash sale of 400,000 metric tons (15 million bushels) of soybeans to unknown destinations for delivery during the current marketing year. 10 percent of U.S. transportation greenhouse gas emissions come from plane travel according to the Environmental Protection Agency. But a first-of-its kind initiative is looking to slash those numbers by creating a hub to scale the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Estimates show that SAF can reduce the lifecycle carbon emissions of flying by more than 80 percent.Peter Frosch is CEO of the Greater Minneapolis St. Paul Regional Economic Development Partnership, one of the partners involved in the effort.

Sarah Ellerby, CEO, Nova Pangaea Technologies (NPT) is the latest guest to sit down with Al on The SAF Podcast. Nova Pangaea Technologies are a UK based company looking whose patented REFNOVA technology can create fantastic added value to almost all waste plant biomass, including the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).  Currently, Nova Pangaea Technologies is currently most notably working on project Speedbird, in the UK, with British Airways and Alcohol-to-Jet refinery technology company, Lanzajet, which is scheduled to come online in 2026. British Airway's parent company, International Airline Group (IAG) also invested in NPT in June 2023. This is a fantastic discussion where Sarah outlines what NPT's expansion strategy could look like beyond project Speedbird, and which global markets they will look to target. They also can co-locate their facilities with existing ethanol production facilities, which can further reduce production costs. Montreal is a great place for an e-SAF facility due to the large availability of hydro-electric renewable power that can be utilised in the production process, one of the key challenges to PtL SAF production. They have a considerable number of offtake agreements already in place, most notably the agreement with the Air France Group penned in August 2023.Jean and Alasdair discuss where the first SAF+ refinery could be located, the importance of a portfolio approach to stakeholders to ensure that SAF+ has access to the most recent and important industry development and expertise. Matteo's main focus is on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), mainly, e-fuels and mitigating the non-CO2 effects of flying. In this podcast Matteo discusses the potential issues of the darker underbelly of the SAF industry with used cooking oil fraud, something that Matteo says occurs on a daily basis. He also highlights the pitfalls of what he calls 'crypto SAF' which could come to prominence with ever increasing complication of book-and-claim systems. [Correction] The US Federal Reserve is expected this week to take the last step in its tightening cycle by raising interest rates by another 25 bps.  The cabinet denied media reports that have claimed that the production at the Zohr gas field has declined due to technical problems. EGP-denominated bonds' value rose on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. The cost of insuring Egypt's 5-year sovereign debt (CDS rates) hit 12.76%, while non-deliverable forward contracts for the Pound against the Dollar amounted to about EGP40.70. World Bank data revealed that Egypt has debt repayments worth USD15.3 billion in 3Q2023, out of which USD7.7 billion is for GCC deposits, or renewable.  CBE has notified banks of the cancelation of the 11% subsidized lending tourism initiative, and to stop granting any new funding under the initiative. Work is underway on a new initiative. ORHD (FV: EGP20.38, OW) plans to open its fourth yacht marina in El Gouna in 2023. Tourist yachts will now be able to obtain entry permits to Egypt through the Transport Ministry's digital platform within 30 minutes.RMDA's shareholders approved increasing the company's capital by EGP127.88 million to EGP380 million through issuing 0.507 bonus shares for each original share held. Best Clean Energy Stocks and Funds So let's begin with this article titled 4 ETFs targeting clean water, wind energy, the smart grid — and one that has them all by Rachel Koning Beals. It appeared on marketwatch.com. Here are some quotes from Ms. Koning Beals on each of her four recommendations. “For some investment advisers and stock-pickers, so-called green investing is far from just a feel-good move… One such investment adviser is Daniel Milan of Cornerstone Financial Services in Southfield, Michigan… 1) Is First Trust Water ETF (FIW) The fund holds 36 of the largest U.S.-listed water companies, ranked by market cap and weighted equally within five tiers. Milan says… ‘Our water thesis is short-term, intermediate-term and long-term…' In the U.S. alone, fixing the water infrastructure — including ridding groundwater of what are usually known as ‘forever chemicals' — featured only behind transportation as the largest recipients of funding in last year's $1.2 trillion infrastructure law… Milan said. ‘I'm from Michigan. Flint lived its water crisis and we all lived it to some extent… I don't think that crisis water scenario is unique.' 2) First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Smart Grid Infrastructure Index Fund (GRID) …  is a concentrated fund targeting global equities determined to be in the smart grid and electrical energy infrastructure sector, Milan says… The sector may include business in electric grid, electric meters and devices, networks, energy storage and management, and enabling software. 3) First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF (FAN) Most wind ETFs are too small to pass Milan's sniff test… The best, meaning larger, option may be First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF. It saves roughly 60% of its weighting for pure plays in the wind industry, including turbine manufacturers and operators, and allocates the remaining 40% to diversified sector, says Milan. This mix might frustrate some investors who envision a pure play. In fact, they may find more desirable wind opportunities in a broader clean-energy ETF. 4) First Trust NASDAQ Clean Energy Sector ETF (QCLN) … holds a broad portfolio of U.S.-listed firms in the clean energy industry. Eligible companies must be manufacturers, developers, distributors or installers of one of the following sub-sectors: advanced materials (that enable clean-energy or reduce the need for petroleum products), energy intelligence (smart grid), energy storage and conversion (hybrid batteries) or renewable electricity generation (solar, wind, geothermal, etc.)… Milan acknowledges recent volatility in this ETF and other macro-level sector funds as broader market consensus has favored names with high cash flow and strong balance sheets over high-growth companies.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Best Clean Energy Stocks and Funds It seems that the media is again filled with analysts reviewing renewable energy-related stocks and funds. So, most of the following articles refer to that space. This next article is titled Best renewable energy to watch out for in 2022 by Alex Artenie. It's on medium.datadriveninvestor.com site. Here are some quotes from Mr. Artenie on each of his picks. “1) NextEra Energy (NEE) While not a household name, this company is the world's largest wind and solar energy producer. It has production facilities in Florida and sells power through purchasing power agreements (PPAs) to other utility companies and also directly to consumers. You should watch NextEra Energy closely as it has yielded about 700 percent in returns in the last decade. The company has enjoyed above-average growth, increasing its dividend yearly for more than a quarter of a century. 2) Brookfield Renewable (BEP) Brookfield is one of the global leaders in hydroelectric power production. Hydropower makes up more than 62 percent of its energy portfolio in 2021. However, the company is also into wind energy, solar energy, and energy storage businesses. Steady cash flow comes from long-term energy contracts with PPAs, which buy most of its energy. Brookfield stock has generated an annual return of 20 percent for its investors since it began operating. Dividend payments have grown at a 6 percent compound annual growth rate starting from 2012. The company is projecting more growth based on its extensive renewable energy projects billed to come online soon. 3) Clearway Energy (CWEN) Clearway is a big-time player in the American renewable energy market. In addition to extensive wind and solar energy portfolios, the company operates highly efficient power plants running on natural gas. It also sells its energy to PPAs, ensuring a constant revenue stream. Since its inception, investors in Clearway stocks have reaped annual returns that total almost 10 percent. The firm is controlled by Global Infrastructure Partners, a private equity company. Clearway is gunning for between 5 and 8 percent annual dividend growth in the nearest future.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Best Clean Energy Stocks and Funds My next renewable/alternative energy article is titled 3 Alternative Energy Stocks to Watch As Wind Power Expands by Aparajita Dutta. Found on zacks.com. Here are some of Ms. Dutta's comments on her stock picks. “1) TotalEnergies (TTE - Free Report) Based in France, TotalEnergies is among the top five publicly traded global integrated oil and gas companies based on production volumes, proved reserves and market capitalization. Earlier this month, TotalEnergies and ENEOS Corporation announced a collaboration to jointly conduct a feasibility study to assess the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in ENEOS Negishi Refinery in Yokohama City, Japan. The proposed unit, with a capacity of 300,000 tons per year of SAF, once operational will allow TotalEnergies to offer a sustainable supply chain of SAF in Japan around 2025. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for TotalEnergies' 2022 earnings has improved 31.8% in the past 60 days and implies an improvement of 58.7% from 2021's reported earnings figure. The company delivered an average earnings surprise of 18.88% in the last four quarters…  TotalEnergies currently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). 2) Evergy (EVRG - Free Report) Based in Kansas City, MO, this company provides clean, safe and reliable energy to 1.6 million customers in Kansas and Missouri… Its 2021 adjusted earnings per share were $3.54, reflecting a 14% year-over-year increase and a 7% increase over the $3.30 mid-point of the company's original 2021 adjusted EPS guidance range. This indicates the company's operational strength. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Evergy's 2022 earnings has improved 0.6% in the past 60 days. The company delivered an average earnings surprise of 87.44% in the last four quarters. It boasts a long-term earnings growth rate of 6.1%. Evergy currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). 3) Brookfield Renewables (BEP - Free Report). (Yes again!) Based in New York, Brookfield Renewables operates renewable power assets in the United States, Brazil and Colombia. In April 2022, Brookfield formed a strategic partnership with SSE Renewables for participation in the 1.4GW Hollandse Kust (west) offshore wind farm zone tenders, which are currently underway in the Netherlands… The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Brookfield Renewables' 2022 earnings has improved in the past 60 days while that for sales implies an improvement of 11.6% over 2021's reported sales figure. Brookfield Renewables currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Best Clean Energy Stocks and Funds The last article I'm reviewing today is titled 2 Renewables Stocks That Could Have You Seeing Green. It's by someone I feature in almost every podcast, Matthew DiLallo, on fool.com. Here's s some of what Mr. DiLallo has to say about these two stocks. “1) Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure (AY) … focuses on owning environmentally sustainable infrastructure assets like renewable energy generating facilities, water desalination plants, electric transmission lines, and cleaner-burning natural gas power plants. These assets generate relatively predictable cash flow backed by long-term contracts and government-regulated rate structures. That gives Atlantica the funds to pay an attractive 5.7%-yielding dividend… Atlantica is targeting to invest at least $300 million per year in renewable energy and other sustainable infrastructure projects. This investment rate should grow its cash available for distribution by 5% to 8% per year. That will enable the company to continue growing its high-yielding dividend… investors should also benefit from a steadily rising stock price, adding to their returns. 2) Clearway Energy (CWEN)(CWEN.A) (Yes, again!) Clearway Energy focuses on producing cleaner electricity from wind, solar, and natural gas power plants. It sells this energy under long-term contracts to end users like utilities. That enables it to generate relatively stable cash flow to support its 4.3%-yielding dividend. The company has also steadily increased its payout by expanding its portfolio, primarily through acquisitions. It invested $820 million across a range of transactions last year, including purchasing projects developed by its sponsor Clearway Energy Group (CEG). These deals help support Clearway's target to grow its dividend by 5% to 8% per year.  The company believes it can deliver dividend growth toward the high end of that target range through at least 2026. One key power source is the upcoming sale of its thermal business. It will receive $1.35 billion in net proceeds, giving it the cash to reinvest in higher-returning opportunities. It already has $600 million in deals lined up. That leaves it with $750 million to allocate toward future acquisitions. Given (the company's) vast development project pipeline, Clearway should have plenty of options. (It) has 19 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy projects in its backlog, including 2 GW that it plans to start building this year. That's a sizable opportunity set for Clearway, considering its current portfolio size of 9 GWs… Clearway Energy offers investors a high-powered dividend that should generate a lot of green in the coming years. Managing a runway rehabilitation project and minimizing the effects on operators, the airport, and the public. In the news, airports are hamstrung in dealing with drone threats, handling emergency landings, some Boeing 737 Max charges are dropped, and North Atlantic tracks below FL330. Guest Paul H. Bradbury, P.E. is the airport director for the Portland International Jetport (PWM) in Portland, Maine.  The Jetport is planning a runway rehabilitation project that will see 34,000 tons of asphalt removed and replaced over 27.5 acres of pavement. A runway lighting upgrade will require 19.7 miles of wire and over 5,000 flights will be affected as the primary runway is closed for two months. The airport has been working with operators and the public to minimize the impact. Paul explains the difference between runway maintenance, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. We learn about the pavement management plan that includes an assessment of runway condition. Also, the difference between concrete and asphalt runways, and how the paving contractor was selected. 90% of this project was funded through the Airport Improvement Program. Beyond the runway rehabilitation project, Paul brings us up to date on the Jetport's de-icing fluid recovery process that allows them to resell the fluid to other airports. The Jetport is the only airport in the U.S. doing this. Aviation News Airports face legal, policy hurdles in countering chronic drone threat Airports around the world have been plagued by drone incursions, but the actions they can take are very limited. The non-profit, FAA-funded National Safe Skies Alliance issued a report in September 2021 titled “Airport Response to Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Threats.” [PDF] Both passive and active counter-drone technology exists, but in the U.S., only four federal agencies can use them: the Departments of Defense, Energy, Homeland Security, and Justice. Is This The Worst Airline Passenger of 2022, So Far? Frontier Airlines flight 1335 from New York to Orlando had to make an emergency landing in North Carolina. A passenger was convinced the woman in the seat behind him was stabbing him with needles and stealing his DNA. When the man started harassing others, six passengers restrained him and tied him down to his seat. Local police were waiting at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Two Charges Against Former Boeing 737 Max Chief Technical Pilot Dismissed The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas Fort Worth Division dismissed two counts against former Boeing Chief Technical Pilot Mark Forkner. In the counts, Forkner was alleged to have “knowingly and with the intent to defraud, made and used a materially false writing, entry, certification, document, record, data plate, label, and electronic communication concerning an aircraft part.” The judge wrote, “Because MCAS is not an aircraft ‘part' as defined in 18 U.S.C. § 3l(a)(7), the indictment fails to allege an offense that Defendant violated § 38(a)(1)(C).” Forkner still has counts on wire fraud. The trial is scheduled for March 2022. Why Are North Atlantic Tracks Below FL330 Being Scrapped?
