In this episode, we shine a spotlight on the power-pop trio Material Issue and their iconic debut album, “International Pop Overthrow.” Released in 1991, this album is brimming with infectious hooks, jangly guitars, and frontman Jim Ellison's heartfelt lyrics. We explore the band's origins, their rise in the Chicago circuit, and the creation of their cult-classic debut, which features standout tracks like “Valerie Loves Me,” “Diane,” and “Renee Remains the Same.” Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the band, this episode is a celebration of “International Pop Overthrow” and its place in pop music history. ********************* EARLY ACCESS FOR PATREON SUBSCRIBERS! David Bash in conversation with David Eastaugh https://internationalpopoverthrow.com/ The festival is dedicated to bring classic pop music to the public, and is run by CEO and founder David Bash and Rina Bardfield. Although the festival has over the years featured several major label acts, such as Phantom Planet, Maroon 5 (under their previous incarnation, Kara's Flowers), and The Click Five, Bash tries to maintain the grassroots feel of the festival by featuring primarily unsigned bands, and presenting them in a festival platform with similar minded artists.
Tomorrow, Thursday…something a bit different. Besides our three featured artists, I'll be spotlighting “International Pop Overthrow Volume 24”. @David Bash has info on any and all things International Pop Overthrow! No particular order. Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo and Popdose writer Keith Creighton are inching closer to the end of the year with the November New Music Report. This episode is jam-packed with some stellar music recommendations just in time for the holidays. Segment One: The Big Album It's Prince! Known at various times as The Purple One, Christopher, His Royal Badness, The Artist, or Jamie Starr, Prince was at the top of his game between 1980 and 1987 with an impressive music output that few in the music world could match. Why? Because of The Vault. A prolific writer, Prince vaulted roughly 8,000 songs. In 1991, after a series of lackluster albums, Prince released “Diamonds and Pearls” with his new backing band, the New Power Generation. The result was his fifth (and final) #1 hit in the US with “Cream,” a #3 hit with the title track, and two top 20 hits with “Gett Off” and Money Don't Matter 2 Night.” Overall, “Diamonds and Pearls” was an absolute commercial success for Prince. On October 27, 2023, Sony released a super deluxe version with three CDs of vaulted tracks, a double live album, a remaster of the original record, and a disc with singles and different mixes. That's a lot of music, and Ted and Keith break it all down into digestible bits to highlight what's brilliant about the super deluxe edition, what's good, and what misses the mark. Segment Two: New Music Releases The Transcanada Highwaymen's “Explosive Hits Vol #1 is mostly a carefully curated album of cover songs popular in the 1970s. These are Mellow and Radio Gold songs sung by a supergroup consisting of Moe Berry from The Pursuit of Happiness, Chris Murphy from Sloan, Craig Morthey from Odds, and Steven Page formerly of the Barenaked Ladies, but has gone on to a fantastic solo career. Featured songs include their cover of Andy Kim's “Rock Me Gently, and “Which Way You Goin' Billy” by The Poppy Family. Samples of both songs are embedded in this episode. Lol Tolhurst (former drummer from The Cure), Budgie (from Siouxsie & The Banshees), and producer Jackknife Lee have created a cinematic mindscrew of an album entitled “Los Angles.” Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark are back with what will likely be the final album of their career, and boy what a way to go out! Nowhere on the record are songs that sound like their biggest US hit, “If You Leave.” Rather, as Keith says, this is a soundtrack for the end of the world. Ted compares “Bauhaus Staircase” to Tears for Fears' “The Tipping Point” for its strength, its familiarity at times, and the satisfying way it's all put together. Duran Duran is back with Dance Macabre, a Halloween-theme mashup of covers, updated obscure deep cuts, and some originals. Also, guitarist Andy Taylor returns to the group, and so does the drummer of 17 years with the band, Warren Cuccrullo. If you want to go on a journey with a musician who is a bit of an acquired taste, give Christian Kjellvander a try. “Hold Your Love Still” may not be for everyone, but once you become familiar with Kjellvander's voice, you'll find this record mesmerizing — as you will hear. Nat Jay's latest EP, “Turns Out It's Not The End” is one of Keith's favorites this year. Comparing her to an outlier star to Taylor Swift's galaxy-consuming supernova, Jay's song “Something More” could have been included in the new Hunger Games soundtrack — and you'll be able to hear why. Shplang! has been on the music scene for almost three decades, and is part of the International Pop Overthrow scene. Their latest song, “Understood” is featured in this episode. Segment Three: Stream It Before You Buy It Quick hit recommendations. "Pretty Vicious" by The Struts “Telephone Line” by Juliana Hatfield “New Blue Sun” by Andre 3000 “Revisions of Truth” by One Square Mile “Chronicles of a Diamond” by Black Pumas “Can't Find The Brakes” by Dirty Honey “Purple Rain” by Dolly Parton “Harridan” (Live) by Porcupine Tree
THE ARWEN LEWIS SHOW - Featuring David Bash Today Arwen welcomes David Bash, Founder of the International Pop Overthrow Festival! As a youth in the early 1970s, David Bash knew he had caught the pop music bug when he found himself unable to sleep each Christmas Eve, as he anxiously awaited the broadcast of the WABC Top 100 the next morning. By the end of that decade Bash had amassed a record collection of more than 3,000 items, and though it's since been mostly converted to CDs, the collection has never stopped growing. In the '80s Bash received a B.A. in Journalism from New York University and a Masters in Psychology from the University of California, Irvine. Although he taught Psychology at several community colleges throughout the '90s the journalism muse continued to beckon, and in 1995 he began writing CD reviews for Yellow Pills magazine and Audities magazine. Since then Bash has written reviews and articles for magazines such as Amplifier, Bucketfull of Brains, Discoveries, Goldmine, Shindig, Ugly Things and Entertainment Today, as well as liner notes for several CD releases. In August of 1998 Bash founded the International Pop Overthrow Festival In Los Angeles. Since that time IPO, as it's affectionately been labeled, has taken place in several cities across the U.S. and Canada, as well as in Liverpool (at the World Famous Cavern Club), Stockholm, and Copenhagen! The aim of International Pop Overthrow was and always will be to create positive exposure for every artist who participates, to create a nurturing, cooperative environment between the musicians and their fans, and to bring pop music, as those of us associated with the festival define the term, to the hearts and minds of the mainstream public. www.InternationalPopOverthrowFestival.com The Arwen Lewis Show Host | Arwen Lewis Executive Producer | Jeremiah D. Noel catches up with Ted Ansani, the bassist of the power pop group, Material Issue. The Chicago band formed in the mid 80's and had many songs featuring women's names in the title. like "Diane," "Valerie Love Me," and "Kim The Waitress," In 1996. the band's lead singer, Jim Ellison, committed suicide. In 2011, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their International Pop Overthrow album, the two surviving members, Ted and drummer Mike Zelenko, reformed the band under the name Material Reissue. The band is back in the spotlight now thanks to the new documentary, Out of Time: The Material Issue Story.
Mike Stephen gets an update on the impact of the latest election on the future of education in Chicago from Becky Vevea of Chalkbeat Chicago, celebrates the return of the International Pop Overthrow music fest to Chicago, and learns about Logical Fleadh's new album from band leader Ethan Sellers.
It's not like Material Issue is the most obscure or overlooked band in the history of Chicago music, but no matter how many power pop music fests get named after them (like the long running International Pop Overthrow festival — which takes its name from their classic debut album), they will always land towards the top of the list of the city's most underrated bands. And now there's a new documentary —“Out Of Time: The Material Issue Story”— that seeks to rectify that injustice. We talked to drummer Mike Zelenko about the love the band's been getting at the recent sold out Q&As for the movie, as well as his experiences recording in Scott's hometown at the Shoes studio, going to high school with Mike O'Connell, opening the Replacements' final show, Michael Chapman, tuna subs, fucking Enuff Z'nuff, the aftermath of Jim Ellison's suicide, and Ted Ansani's legendary pompadour.

This week it's the real Brits vs. the fake Brits. Radiohead and Material Issue both had somewhat unassuming debuts (the massive worldwide success of "Creep" aside), but one would go on to become the most famous rock band in the world while the other would go on to record "Kim the Waitress." In 1991, Material Issue released their long-in-the-works debut album International Pop Overthrow. Along with bands and artists like Jellyfish, Matthew Sweet, The Posies, Redd Kross, major labels were taking chances on the hard-to-pin-down genre known as Power Pop, and the future looked bright until the steamroller known as Nirvana arrived in the fall. Rather than scoop up the next Big Star or Cheap Trick influenced outfit, the next Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains were the priority, and Beatles, Byrds and Badfinger devotees rarely found their favorite bands on mainstream radio or MTV. In retrospect, that might be what makes an album like IPO so listenable after so many years. Geography can be a strange thing for a musician. Artists sometimes play the same hometown venues repeatedly trying to build a following but draw far bigger crowds in faraway towns when they're on the road. And some artists find that American audiences simply may not get them at all. In 2006, Paste magazine included Singer/songwriter Josh Ritter in its list of “100 Greatest Living Songwriters,” but not long before Ritter had lived in several states and played numerous open mic nights in relative obscurity until a short tour in Ireland found him selling out of his records and his shows. With a growing, loyal fanbase overseas, Ritter was then able to parlay that into bigger success in America. Songwriter Anny Celsi lives in Los Angeles, but, like Ritter, her frequent trips to Europe have earned her a strong international fan base. Sure, she still plays here in the States, but she has built up a solid network of fans, musicians and promoters halfway around the globe that brings her four albums worth of incisive and catchy songs to a much wider audience. And the miles and hard work have paid off - over four albums, Celsi has been compared to Aimee Mann, Lucinda Williams, Suzanne Vega and others, she has played festivals like SXSW and International Pop Overthrow and been nominated for an L.A. Weekly Music Award. Her most recent album, January, was released in 2013 and it is full of the kind of observant songs her fans have come to expect. And she already has her tickets to Europe.

Material Issue is one of my very favorite bands. It was a very sad day in 1996 when lead singer Jim Ellison took his own life. Such a tragic event for his family and friends. It put an instant end to a band with a very bright future. Now, 20 years later, their infamous "International Pop Overthrow" album is being re-released and there will be a full-on concert this weekend! You can catch Material Re-Issue this Saturday, April 23rd at the Abbey Pub in Chicago. Original bassist/vocalist Ted Ansani talks about how the band got together, what it was like to lose Jim, future prospects, and even the joys of album cover art...
