North Carolina finished Battle 4 Atlantis in third place after knocking off Northern Iowa, then losing to Villanova, and finally beating Arkansas. It was a good showing from Carolina, with nice redemption from last year's MTE – PK85. One of the big takeaways from Battle 4 Atlantis is wondering who is the best combination for the starting five. Host Isaac Schade suggests six players are currently deserving of being included. The no-brainers are RJ Davis, Armando Bacot, and Harrison Ingram. Cormac Ryan would be the next-most-obvious. That leaves either Elliot Cadeau or Jae'lyn Withers. Who does Isaac think would be best? There are some areas of concern coming out of Atlantis – unwillingness or incapability to change defensive plans when you're getting hammered by a certain offensive style, team-wide free throw percentage, and Carolina's foul issues. The regular season finale loss to NC State was sad, but was it indicative of bigger issues at play? North Carolina leaves the Battle4Atlantis with a 2-1 record. Not the perfect outcome, but a strong showing, particularly from RJ Davis and Harrison Ingram. What exactly led to Carolina's performance? To start – Harrison Ingram has been a revelation for the Tar Heels, helping in ways and with a skill set the Tar Heels haven't had recently. Another factor was Carolina's toughness – do not call this a soft UNC team. What's up with Armando Bacot? Has the three-point shooting improved? Why were there so many fouls called? Did we learn any more about depth usage of players like Seth Trimble and Jalen Washington? Why does Jae'lyn Withers inclusion in the starting lineup help so much? North Carolina has one more tune-up game tomorrow night before heading down to the Battle 4 Atlantis. What should we expect to see from the Tar Heels against UC-Riverside? Lineup changes? Shortening the rotation? Higher energy on defense? Will Armando Bacot continue his early-season tear? Will we see even more role definition off the bench for players like Jalen Washington, Jae'lyn Withers, Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble, Zayden High? There's new block/charge verbiage in college basketball this year. It's even stricter on what a player has to do in order to be able to draw a charge. Coach Rob helps interpret how to observe it and what we should be looking for. Don't miss today's story time! North Carolina's margins of victory thus far aren't wildly dissimilar from last year's, but yet we feel that this team is infinitely better. Why so? Is it that Armando Bacot and RJ Davis are a year older? Is it that the complementary pieces are better, including Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan? Speaking of those four players, they project to be the top four scorers for UNC. Of the remaining seven scholarship players (Jalen Washington, Elliot Cadeau, Jae'lyn Withers, Seth Trimble, Paxson Wojcik, Zayden High, and James Okonkwo), who will be the fifth-leading scorer? Does it seem like a silly exercise? Perhaps, but it's derived from wondering who will step up in a way that's potentially unexpected? Also, Isaac Schade and Coach Pac Kilby discuss what they want to see from Carolina on Friday against UC-Riverside in the final tune-up before the non-conference schedule gets significantly more difficult. North Carolina has not utilized much depth in the Hubert Davis era (360th in the nation in 2022-23 per KenPom). Is this the year that Coach Davis has the depth he can rely on to back up Armando Bacot, RJ Davis, Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram, and (so far) Paxson Wojcik? Will we see close to double-digit minutes for Elliot Cadeau, Jalen Washington, Zayden High, Jae'lyn Withers, and Seth Trimble? Is it possible that five Tar Heels could average double-digit points for the first time since 2017-18? As Carolina shares the ball more capably will we see the assist ratio raise up to 55% for the season? Is it possible that Armando Bacot finishes his career with 95 double-doubles? Isaac Schade & Coach Bill Robinson break down the answers to these questions in a game of Red Light, Green Light. Armando Bacot has had a brilliant career at North Carolina – the all-time leader in rebounds and double-doubles amongst a host of other accolades and successes. Could this be his best year ever? Can he get back to the form of his junior year, or perhaps even surpass that? Will Elliot Cadeau's presence benefit Mando? Will having perimeter-oriented players like Harrison Ingram, Jae'lyn Withers, and Zayden High at the 4 create more space for him to operate? What if Armando Bacot averages 16 points and 13 rebounds a game this season? It's our first ever “What If…? Wednesday”. Isaac Schade and Pac Kilby answer three “what if…” questions about the upcoming 2023-24 UNC college basketball season. What if Elliot Cadeau takes awhile to fully adjust to college basketball? How would that affect the Tar Heels? Will it put more of an onus on RJ Davis running the point? What it mean more time for Seth Trimble? What can Marcus Paige do to ease that transition? Second, what if UNC doesn't utilize its depth early on in the season? How will that affect the Tar Heels in both the short- and long-term? How does that potential hurt the development of Zayden High, Jalen Washington, Jae'lyn Withers, etc? Third, what would happen if the Tar Heels go 0-3 against Tennessee, UConn, and Kentucky? Locked On Tar Heels Discord: https://discord.gg/HU83XYuF Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

The Almanac included North Carolina's frontcourt as the seventh-ranked frontcourt in Division I with the return of Armando Bacot, along with the likes of Harrison Ingram, Jae'lyn Withers, and Jalen Washington, while the backcourt is ranked 15th thanks to the return of RJ Davis, plus Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble, Cormac Ryan, and Paxson Wojcik. The weird thing is that as a team, the Almanac ranks Carolina 24th. That doesn't seem to add up. Something has to be missing. The ACC and SEC released the specific details of the inaugural ACC / SEC Challenge on Monday. North Carolina will host Tennessee at 7:15pm ET on ESPN on Wednesday, November 29. Nationally, there's been a good deal of conversation about the shape and scope of recruiting in the present and moving forward. Will teams continue to recruit from the high school ranks or turn towards more portal additions or a combination of both? Jarin Stevenson committed to Alabama on Wednesday over North Carolina and Virginia. Combined with GG Jackson's decommitment and Simeon Wilcher's decommitment, it might feel like a “sky is falling” moment. However, it's not that and it's not an indictment on UNC recruiting, but rather, it's a sign of the times. In this one-year-at-time approach to school, players look more at the short-term opportunities rather than always a full educational commitment. The second Hubert Davis basketball camp wrapped up on Wednesday and the current players beat the alums this time around 71-68. Elliot Cadeau didn't played because of a lower body injury, but RJ Davis, Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram, Jae'lyn Withers, and Armando Bacot started for the current players. Elliot Cadeau has come to North Carolina a year ahead of schedule and much of the conversation focuses around his role on the team and how he immediately impacts things. North Carolina projects to have something of an undersized starting backcourt with RJ Davis (6'0) and Elliot Cadeau (6'2). What can Hubert Davis and the coaching staff do to work at overcoming that potential challenge? How will Marcus Paige's presence help this backcourt? On Wednesday North Carolina officially announced the signing of all four incoming transfers (Paxson Wojcik, Jae'lyn Withers, Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram) along with Elliot Cadeau. The football team also announced the times / tv schedule for the first three games of the 2023 season: South Carolina | 7:30ET | ABC | 9/2 Appalachian St. | 5:15ET | ACCN | 9/9 Minnesota | 3:30 | ESPN or ESPN2 | 9/16 Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

So much time and energy has been spent this college basketball offseason focusing on the new whirlwind of activity in the transfer portal – including Carolina losing seven players (Caleb Love, Puff Johnson, Dontrez Styles, D'Marco Dunn, Tyler Nickel, Justin McKoy, Will Shaver) and getting four players (Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan, Paxson Wojcik, Jae'lyn Withers) – and discussing possible reclassifications that we've not had our usual amount of focus and attention on the incoming freshmen. It's time to change that. Zayden High and Simeon Wilcher bring intriguing skill sets to the Tar Heels in 2023-24. What will they specifically add to this, their first edition of UNC? What will their roles be? What are their likely floors and ceilings? Turning to the football field, Michael Merdinger is the QB commit for the class of 2024. Is he next in line following Sam Howell and Drake Maye? Will it be Connor Harrell or Tad Hudson? Will it be a transfer QB? Isaac Schade is joined by Heel Tough Blog's Anthony Pagnotta and Josh Marlow to discuss. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

It's a MAILBAG episode! There's questions about next season, like “Who do you think will breakout for UNC next season?” There are questions about next year's starting lineup – whether it's better to have a smaller starting lineup with Cormac Ryan at three and Harrison Ingram at four or Harrison Ingram at three and Jae'lyn Withers at the four. Will we continue to see fewer true centers and if so, why? There are also questions looking back – what was the biggest issue with this past season's team that led to the lack of on-court success? Who was the most underrated player of last season? Listeners also submitted questions about how the podcast is put together. If you didn't get your question in, make sure to submit it next time! North Carolina has lost seven different players to the transfer portal, including Caleb Love, Puff Johnson, D'Marco Dunn, Dontrez Styles, Tyler Nickel, Justin McKoy, and Will Shaver. The question becomes: Who's the most surprising of that group to leave Chapel Hill? On the other side of the coin, which of the incoming transfers will have the biggest impact: Paxson Wojcik, Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan, or Jae'lyn Withers? Is this overhaul a good “culture reset” for Carolina or is it too much turnover? UNC had massive expectations heading into Sam Howell's final season, both for he as an individual and for team success, but neither were meant to be. The question now is: Has Mack Brown done enough this offseason to make Drake Maye's (presumptive) final season in Chapel Hill different than Howell's? Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

In the first stretch of the transfer portal, prior to the portal closing, North Carolina has lost seven players and brought in four. Based on quality and quantity of players in and players out how have the Tar Heels fared on a scale of 1-10. They've lost Caleb Love, Puff Johnson, D'Marco Dunn, Dontrez Styles, Justin McKoy, Tyler Nickel, and Will Shaver. The incoming players are Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan, Jae'lyn Withers, and Paxson Wojcik. Additionally what could happen with the final three scholarships to raise or lower than number between one and ten. The ACC Spring meetings are taking place this week and the talk is the current media rights deal, and by natural progression, realignment. As we come to another round of realignment talk, host Isaac Schade and Pac Kilby answer the question: Would you rather see North Carolina stay in the ACC, go to a different conference (and if so, which one), or be part of starting a brand new conference? Following D'Marco Dunn's transfer out, North Carolina now has three scholarships to utilize, if they so choose, for the 2023-24 season. Hubert Davis' third team will return four scholarship players from last season (Armando Bacot, RJ Davis, Jalen Washington, Seth Trimble) while adding two freshmen (Simeon Wilcher, Zayden High) and four transfers (Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan, Jae'lyn Withers, & Paxson Wojcik). How will Coach Davis utilize these three? Will he use one on Elliot Cadeau? Will he give any to walk-ons to avoid potential drama of having scholarship players at the end of the bench not playing? At this point, it's all too clear: Elliot Cadeau needs to re-classify and come on to Chapel Hill with the 2023 class. The combination of what he can already do and what that skill set would mean for the current roster is too good to pass up. In the transfer portal / NIL era, you have to take when you can get when it's ready to be had. If Cadeau comes, the starting lineup for next season likely looks quite a bit different. Previously, host Isaac Schade had suggested a starting lineup of RJ Davis, Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram, Jae'lyn Withers, and Armando Bacot. However with Cadeau in the mix, Schade would choose Cadeau, Davis, Ryan, Ingram, and Bacot. Leaky Black has been invited to the G League's Camp from which a few players will be invited to the official NBA Combine. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

The transfer portal for men's basketball closes Thursday evening at 11:59pm. Currently, North Carolina has lost six players in the portal – Caleb Love, Puff Johnson, Tyler Nickel, Dontrez Styles, Justin McKoy, and Will Shaver – while adding Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan, Jae'lyn Withers, and Paxson Wojcik. Once the portal closes, student-athletes can't transfer and play immediately; they can, however still commit to a new school if they're already in the portal. The question for North Carolina becomes: Will the Tar Heels lose any more players to the portal? If so, who? And how do you factor into those decisions the fact that UNC still has two more scholarships they can hand out? If you're a player, how do you process the timeline to make that decision with incomplete information? Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

North Carolina would benefit from another frontcourt player to help spell Armando Bacot, Jae'lyn Withers, Jalen Washington, and Zayden High. With two remaining scholarships, they certainly have the space to pick up another player or two. One such candidate could by North Dakota State transfer Grant Nelson, who entered the transfer portal on Tuesday after three years in Fargo. He has a unique skill set that pops off screen, but the question becomes: Would his style and usage rate mesh with the rest of the current Carolina roster? That will be up to Hubert Davis and the coaching staff to decide. Host Isaac Schade lays out the cases for and against bringing in Nelson, plus what a starting lineup might look like with him in it. UNC will once again be playing the CBS Sports Classic in December and it was recently revealed that the event will be held in Atlanta and that the Heels will likely be playing Kentucky, rather than UCLA as initially imagined. ESPN (Jeff Borzello) released their most recent way-too-early Top 25 college basketball rankings on Monday. North Carolina has moved up from 23rd to 19th. Host Isaac Schade thinks that's not only too high, but that the Tar Heels shouldn't currently be ranked at all, despite getting back RJ Davis and Armando Bacot. Hubert Davis' squad needs to prove they belong before they should be invited to the party. In the top 25 blurb, Borzello lists his projected starting lineup for North Carolina, which includes Cormac Ryan, Simeon Wilcher, and Harrison Ingram in addition to Davis and Bacot. Isaac Schade's starting lineup is the same but switching Jae'lyn Withers in and Wilcher out. Who's correct? KJ Davis tweeted again on Monday, but only to say that he had been silenced; still no news. The tennis (men's and women's) NCAA Tournament brackets were revealed on Monday evening, with the women No. 1 overall and the men No. 16 overally. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Ron Holland, the No. 1 PF in the class of 2023, decommitted from Texas on Friday and will open up his recruitment. North Carolina could really utilize him to help round a frontcourt that's quite thin with just Armando Bacot, Jalen Washinton, and Jae'lyn Withers. Holland would provide immediate help in that regard. The NFL Draft was this weekend and four Tar Heels were drafted. In fact, for the third straight season, four or more Tar Heels have been drafted. This year's crew included Josh Downs (3rd, 79, Colts), Asim Richards (5th, 169, Cowboys), Antoine Green (7th, 219, Lions), and Ray Vohasek (7th, 227, Jaguars). The lady Tar Heels brought in another transfer, this time rising sophomore Indya Nivar. Nivar is transferring from Stanford giving Coach Courtney Banghart three total transfers in this cycle. Stanford transfer Harrison Ingram is coming to the Tar Heels for the 2023-24 season, joining pillars RJ Davis and Armando Bacot, along with three other transfers in Cormac Ryan, Jae'lyn Withers, and Paxson Wojcik. Ingram came out of high school as the No. 19 player in the country and a projected one-and-done player. How could he fit at Carolina in a way that makes him more like that player he was in high school? With everything we've talked about surrounding UNC's roster construction for 2023-24, we haven't considered the possibility of Jarin Stevenson (No. 1 PF in 2024) committing to the Tar Heels and re-classifying to the class of 2023. What if he did so and took one of UNC's final 2 scholarships for next season? Could he slot in alongside Armando Bacot in the frontcourt? At the very least, he would challenge for a starting role and would add great depth along with Bacot, Jae'lyn Withers, and Jalen Washington. Early this week, North Carolina extended their 2nd and 3rd scholarship offers to the class of 2025 – Darryn Peterson (SG) and Koa Peat (PF). UNC women's basketball picked up two-way player Lexi Donarski from Iowa St, a former Big 12 Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Donarski was ranked No. 4 in 247Sports' transfer rankings. Sad news for UNC Football, which lost Ja'Qurious Conley to the transfer portal. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

North Carolina landed their third transfer commitment of the offseason on Thursday – Notre Dame's Cormac Ryan. Ryan joins Paxson Wojcik and Jae'lyn Withers as players coming to Chapel Hill via the portal. Ryan brings a wealth of experience and leadership from his years spent at both Stanford and Notre Dame. Not only is he capable of knocking down shots from outside, he averages four rebounds a game and 2.5 assists and knocks down 80% of his free throws. Host Isaac Schade is of the opinion that he's actually a better fit for the Tar Heels than Nick Timberlake would have been (although would have gladly welcomed Timberlake as well!). How will Ryan fit in? What will his role be? Will he play the 2 or the 3? Will he be a starter or a bench player? The answers to some of these questions will be determined by who else transfers to UNC. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Mgbako is a high school teammate of incoming Carolina freshman Simeon Wilcher. Carolina needs a legit stretch four and that's exactly what Mgbako would bring to the table alongside Armando Bacot in the frontcourt with RJ Davis holding it down in the backcourt. One of the recent transfers North Carolina has been connected to is Louisville's Jae'Lyn Withers. Withers has played three up and down years for the Cardinals. The question becomes – was his inconsistent production a result of his own play or the circumstances in which he's found himself? Hubert Davis and the rest of the coaching staff will have to answer that question. The latest on Harrison Ingram is that the Tar Heels are in the lead, but the likes of Kansas, Kentucky, and Michigan are lurking. Reports state that Ingram fielded calls from both Bill Self and John Calipari on Monday. What will Ingram ultimately decide and when? Dalton explains why the season opener for the Louisville Cardinals' men's basketball team against the Bellarmine Knights is a tough and dangerous matchup. Scotty Davenport's squads are always solid perimeter shooting teams that move well without the basketball and Louisville will need to put together a solid performance to ensure victory. In the second segment, Dalton discusses what is at stake for the Louisville football team against the #10 Clemson Tigers on Saturday afternoon. There is not a lot to lose, but a significant amount to gain with a victory for the Cardinals in Death Valley: recruiting momentum, on-the-field production, and the continued upward trajectory for the immediate future of the program. Finally, he identifies Jae'Lyn Withers and El Ellis as the players to watch for Louisville against Bellarmine. Withers has been the best player throughout the first two exhibition games and will be relied upon to continue his solid production in this first matchup. With the back court featuring significant youth and inexperience, it is critical that Ellis has a solid performance in the Cardinals' first game.
