The earliest selection on last week's Elisabeth Söderström episode featured the soprano at 24 singing the title role of Madama Butterfly. In that live recording, we also heard as Sharpless her compatriot the baritone Hugo Hasslo, to whom I introduced my listeners last fall. Today I dive a little bit deeper into Hasslo's extant recordings. Considering what a great singer he was, and how his reputation has merely grown with the passage of time, it's shocking how rarely Hasslo recorded in the studio. Therefore the majority of this episode consists of live recordings, from as far back as Hasslo's operatic debut in 1940 as Guglielmo under the baton of Fritz Busch, through to his performance as di Luna alongside Jussi Björling's final operatic appearance in Sweden twenty years later. Along the way we hear excerpts from Rigoletto, Il tabarro, Yevgeny Onegin (or should I say Eugen Onegin), Il trovatore, and… Porgy and Bess (?!?!). I also include a sample of the singing of Hasslo's teacher, the Scottish tenor Joseph Hislop to show that the apple did not fall far from the tree! Other singers appearing on the episode include Sena Jurinac, Einar Andersson, Sigurd Björling, Eric Sædén, Margareta Hallin, Arne Tyrén, Aase Nordmo Løvberg, Apollo Granforte, and a surprise visit from last week's subject, the transcendent Elisabeth Söderström. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists.

Today we're joined by indie filmmaker and casting director David Guglielmo, who recently wrapped his latest film, Love Bomb. David shares his journey of directing a script written specifically for him by friend and screenwriter Kathy Charles. We explore the creative challenges of transforming an erotic thriller into a dark comedy with shades of Scorsese's After Hours, and how he crafted surreal, Lynchian tones to set the film apart.David also dives into the real-world setbacks he faced on set, from revoked permits to floods, and how quick thinking and flexibility helped keep the production afloat. With insights on casting, creating a cohesive tone, and making the most of ultra-low budgets, David gives us a masterclass on indie filmmaking survival. This is David's second time on the show so if you want more of his origin story be sure and check out Episode 11.Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with David Guglielmo.Flexibility on Set is Crucial:David emphasized the importance of adaptability because he was forced to embody this to an extreme degree. When a neighbor caused their permit to be revoked, the production team had to pivot from a night shoot to a day shoot. Instead of panicking, David calmly rewrote scenes and embraced the changes, which ultimately added an interesting surreal vibe to the film. David has been on a lot of sets and faced a lot of setbacks, so his adaptability is very fluid—to the point where not only does he roll with the punches, but he also finds ways to make the setbacks work in his favor. This is like black belt-level directing. Best laid plans can come crashing down at any moment, which is why it's critical to not only be resilient in the face of obstacles but to embrace them.Stay Tuned In:David noted that when directing, it's important to remain tuned into the frequency of the project. This may sound metaphysical, but well-crafted movies have a specific frequency—whether you want to call it a tone, a spirit, or an energy, it's foundational to the movie. As you go through the inevitable setbacks and sacrifices that come with filmmaking, it's critical to remain tuned into that frequency because it can guide your decisions in favor of the movie. David also recommends making films that reflect your distinct sensibilities and experiences rather than chasing trends or formulas.Invest in Crew Happiness:Having made several ultra-low-budget films, when asked where filmmakers can afford to cut costs and where they should invest, David stresses that the well-being of the crew should never be compromised. A happy, motivated crew can make a significant difference in the film's final outcome and your overall experience directing. The key to this is building a strong sense of camaraderie on set, which starts with transparency: letting the crew know exactly what they're signing up for and setting realistic expectations from the jump. By doing so, you attract team members who are passionate about the project rather than just in it for the paycheck. David also believes in giving less experienced but talented crew members their first major opportunities, creating a collective enthusiasm and a willingness to go the extra mile.Show NotesMovies & InspirationsLove Bomb (David Guglielmo's latest film)Castle Freak (remake, written by Kathy Charles)Jacob's WifeAfter HoursGone GirlThe Hand That Rocks the CradleDressed to KillBlow OutBody DoubleDeath ProofIt FollowsUnder the Silver LakeBooksCatching the Big Fish by David...

We also pay our respects to his Cairn terrier Marty which led us to a helpful discussion around end of life care. Great talk with a good-hearted dog dad. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Francesca Telese from UC San Diego and Jessica Zhou from Cold Spring Harbour about their work on the molecular underpinnings of human addiction. Francesca Telese worked on neuronal enhancers and their pivotal role in governing gene activity. She sheds light on her remarkable findings concerning the epigenetic signature of neuronal enhancers that are intricately involved in synaptic plasticity. Jessica Zhou joined Francesca Telese's lab as a PhD student where she worked on elucidating the effects of chronic cannabis use on memory and behavior in mice. She takes us through the fascinating correlation between THC and gene co-expression networks. Francesca and Jessicathen discuss the utilization of genetically diverse outbred rats in their research, along with the crucial exploration of cell type specificity in gene expression studies. They then delve into the long-term changes that occur in the brain after drug exposure and the profound implications for relapse. Additionally, they touch upon the challenges they face in analyzing single-cell data.   References Zhou, J. L., de Guglielmo, G., Ho, A. J., Kallupi, M., Pokhrel, N., Li, H. R., Chitre, A. This week, I'm honored to welcome Guglielmo Notarbartolo di Villarosa, Head of Private Equity & Venture Capital at PFC, the family office of his branch of the Marzotto Family, one of Italy's most significant enterprise families, whose history in the textile and fashion industry extends back over 250 years. Guglielmo is a G7 family member of the Marzotto Family and a G3 member of his family branch. Over the past 5 years, he has worked with his siblings and cousins to evolve the family enterprise and family office structure, refocusing it on creating a shared purpose and positive impact. As a rising-gen family leader who is carrying forward the legacy of a nearly 300-year-old family, Guglielmo shares the story of his family and the fascinating recent intergenerational transition within his own family branch. This latest transition process, which passed control of the family enterprise from Guglielmo's grandfather (G1) to the current generation (G3) of family leaders, was a remarkable success story. Not only was the succession smooth and conflict-free, but the G3 family members emerged highly motivated, aligned, and fulfilled by the exercise. A fundamental part of the transition process was the joint work the family did to draft and formalize a family constitution. Guglielmo offers his views on how important a family constitution is and how critical it is for the family to undergo an intentional, high-quality process to create and agree to one. The family constitution process resulted in fundamental changes to how the family operates and the way family members regard the purpose of the family wealth. Guglielmo explains how the family governance structures and behaviors evolved and the changes that drove to their collective definition of what “impact” and “value creation” means to them as a family. Guglielmo provides practical tips and lessons learned from the family constitution process – especially since it was a very positive experience for all family members and unified the current generation behind a shared value system and purpose. He goes over the choices and decisions they made as a family, which ultimately resulted in greater unity and happiness among the family. He also offers his insights into the practical steps that led to one of the most important outcomes for the family – aligning behind a shared vision and purpose, which is centered around delivering measurable positive impact on local communities and alleviating negative economic externalities. Don't miss this unique opportunity to hear directly from the G7 family member of a remarkable enterprise family with nearly 3-century-long history of success and impact. First-hand family case studies like this one are scarce and are a wonderful benefit of being a member of the FOX community.
