It was only a matter of time before the democratization of all things came to evangelicalism. Whether it was Elon Musk buying Twitter, “entrepreneurs” getting rich off meme coins, or AI giving anyone supposed expertise in whatever field they wanted, we are experiencing a technological revolution that is as disruptive as the printing press. Information, platforms, access, and ideas have been thrown wide open to anyone with the shrewdness, tact, and ambition to wield them. I'm not saying this is a bad or a good thing, it's just the way things are moving. No one is taking this harder than the evangelical institutions of the past. Seminaries, Universities, para-church ministries and church networks that were massively influential in the 1990s and early 2000s still have lots of land, money, and reach. But ultimately, despite their millions of dollars and decades long track record, they are rapidly losing influence. Men with no degrees, no pedigree, and minimal funds are capturing the hearts of the next generation of right wing and Christian men because they have what the institutions lack. Courage. The gatekeepers shriek and wail, but they are gatekeepers without a gate. Went a full 90 minutes today starting with Corey Mahler and the Stone Choir Cult's attack on my last evening, followed up by Mahler's amazing promotion of Marcion's gnosticism. I used his false statements about the name Yahweh to go into church history and trace the damage that was done by the loss of the knowledge of Hebrew and how this impacted the development of sub- and anti-biblical traditions. We also looked at a claim by Leighton Flowers about church history (always entertaining), a sola scriptura meme, and a brief inquiry as to whether JD Hall's elders know he is back to doing what destroyed him, his church, and his ministry, only two years ago.
On this episode of Protestia Tonight for December 17, 2024, David explains the problem of online-active pastors and confused non-pastors attempting to "hard shepherd" online speech and responds to James White taking a swipe at Protestia over publishing material from JD Hall.

As is my tradition, this being our five-hundredth episode, let's recap the last hundred episodes, and draw out some observations and take-aways. Average podcast length doesn't seem to be much of a factor. The highlights - or ten most popular episodes - are almost three times as popular as the lowlights; yet the most popular episodes are 10% longer. What's more, I had two episodes over 2 hours long – one about Doug Wilson, and one about the Montana Free Press expose of the JD Hall situation. And these were my longest podcast episodes to-date by a long shot. But, interestingly, listenership did not seem to be adversely affected. That likely is due to subject matter. Contrasting the single most popular episode with the very least, there were over four times as many listens when I talked about a Biblical word study centered on Lynyrd Skynyrd's song ‘Simple Man' compared with the Battle of Bannockburn and what the Southern Poverty Law Center found in polling Americans about their attitudes toward the legitimacy of political assassination as an instrument of change or saving the country. The difference between the top and bottom ten episodes is, on average, a factor of two to four. Lynyrd Skynyrd, G.K. Chesterton, Sinclair Ferguson, David Morrill, Doug Wilson, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, AD Robles, Jon Harris, and JD Hall - the names of notable men crop up in the most popular episodes. And there does seem to be something to focusing on a particular character that seems to highlight and make more interesting the exploration of more general truths and principles. Meanwhile, Christian nationalism, Christian unity, Christian universalism, and the election are recurring themes in the least popular episodes. And, yes, names crop up in some of these as well, but not as many. Only Jonathan Leeman, Herschel Walker, Raphael Warnock, and Joe Rogan mentioned. But most of these are less well known in relation to the question of theology, ecclesiology, or Christian political philosophy, and that is probably decisive for many of you in whether you tune in. As usual, there is a three month difference, on average, between when the top and bottom 10% of episodes were published, with the older episodes getting more plays over time. From July to October, we went from more summertime cares and concerns to either wanting to deep-dive into election news and analysis, or desperately wanting to have the election over so we could move on with normal life again. And this too is meaningful, since it speaks to a kind of growing weariness which we do well to think about and be intentional regarding. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Confrontation and resolution of private sin of one Christian brother against another should be handled as privately as possible, according to what Christ says in Matthew 18:15-20. Go privately to your brother first. If he won't listen, take along two or three witnesses and try again. If he still isn't listening, take the offending brother before the elders. If he writes them off too, take the offending brother before the church and regard him as an outsider. This is reasonably interpreted by most as referring to the local church, but specific examples of rebuke and correction are found throughout the Scripture which the inclusion of itself proves that rebuke and correction of even laymen is not confined to only the knowledge of the local church. If this were not so, the inclusion of these stories in the Biblical text would be very curious indeed. Therefore, those who object that any attempt to make the larger body of Christ aware of private sins on the part of a Christian brother or sister must reckon with this fact. So far, I have yet to see this done. But it really needs to be done, and that fact is a primary driver of my work here right now. The Biblical standard, principle, and command for handling sin and confrontation of church leaders like elders, pastors, and overseers, meanwhile, is different. Confrontation and resolution of sin by an elder requires the fuller counsel of God than Matthew 18 alone. The testimony of two or three witnesses, according to what the Apostle Paul writes in 1 Timothy 5, establishes any charge which will be admitted. The reasons for this are not stated explicitly here, but are certainly related to the Biblical qualifications for overseers that they be above reproach. 1 Timothy 3:2 – “Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach…” Titus 1:7 – “For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain…” Above reproach here does not mean incapable of sin or error; it means blameless in the sense of their character being so indisputably high that false charges of impropriety cannot stick. As we talk about Romans 13 a lot on this podcast, the ideal of the governing authority being God's minister to do justice should not be misconstrued or twisted to mean the one in authority is infallible or perfect in the civil sphere; So also, the ideal of overseers being above reproach should not be misconstrued or twisted to mean they are imbued with infallibility or perfection in the ecclesiastical sphere. But 1 Timothy 5 says when there is an established charge against an elder, it's to be leveled in the sight of all. And some want this word “all” here to be narrowed to not mean “all” for reasons which may be sincere. Yet their handling of the truth requires gentle encouragement and correction. They are pure-hearted, perhaps. But they have not studied the relevant passages diligently enough, and need to be shown that. Others, meanwhile, want this word “all” here to be narrowed to not mean “all” for reasons which are doubtless self-serving and self-protective. God alone knows perfectly the thoughts and intentions of our hearts. Yet Jesus tells us to judge trees by the fruit they bear – whether good or evil – and that fruit is not doctrinal statements and verbal professions of faith. Many in the Reformed tradition - who have Jordan Hall's back, who defend their not having recognized the warning signs sooner - plead innocence on the basis that his doctrine was sound. These same ones should repent of having neglected judging trees by the fruit of their works and lives. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

AD Robles, like Jon Harris at Conversations That Matter, is someone I've appreciated work by from a distance. That said, he doesn't know me and I don't know him. But I do know he published a podcast episode today which was intended to speak to the current situation surrounding JD Hall of Sidney, Montana. In his episode - which is not very long, but you can watch it here - AD explains that addiction to Xanax and other substances is no joke. He personally can empathize with what Jordan is going through. Nevertheless, despite AD's support, the claim is made that neither he nor anyone else could have known JD was addicted to Xanax, or for how long. To argue the point, we need to go back to God's Word - particularly the qualifications for overseers and deacons which the Apostle Paul writes in the New Testament to both Timothy and Titus. Thereby we'll see that the question of who knew when whether Jordan's behavior and way of relating was influenced by a Xanax addiction, Vitamin D deficiency, or Asperger's Syndrome is really beside the point. There is nothing in the Biblical text about any of these. But what does Paul write instead which should have been instructive here? "Therefore an overseer must be..." above reproach the husband of one wife sober-minded self-controlled respectable hospitable able to teach not a drunkard not violent but gentle not quarrelsome not a lover of money able to manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? not a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil If you were looking in that list for anything specifically about Xanax, Vitamin D, or Asperger's, you didn't miss it. That's because the items that are listed not only ought to have, but did in fact, cause elders and deacons at FBC Sidney for years, and myself besides, to raise alarm bells about the qualification or lack thereof of JD Hall for the pastorate. The fact that said warnings were either missed, ignored entirely, or else not searched out at all is a sad indictment, I think, on the current talking points coming from several national figures online who shared platforms and lent credibility that prevented local accountability by their proximity combined with ambivalence. Regretfully, that seems to include AD Robles as well now. More could have been known if there had been an appetite to know and to act before know. Unfortunately, what seems to be happening with JD Hall's associates one by one is that they are recusing themselves conveniently on the grounds that they either knew nothing or else talked with him privately long ago, then left well enough alone. Again, that will not do, and that is not the model we're called to in God's Word. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Jon Harris over at the Conversations That Matter podcast has done some fine work covering inroads by social justice advocates and those promoting CRT from within the Southern Baptist Convention in recent years. His episode yesterday touched on the situation with JD Hall, and I'd like to take some time to answer key points he makes about his engagement to this point. But first things first, be it known I have admired, respected, and appreciated Harris's engagement on the issues he's covered. Facts matter. More to the point, our handling of God's Word as Christians is crucial to our Christian life and thought. Insofar as Harris has championed sound doctrine and vigilance with a calm, measured voice, he's contributed not just to the substance of the debate in our day, but to the tone and tenor as well. He's to be commended for that, and I do commend him. Actually, it's for that reason especially, and out of familiarity with his body of work, that Jon would have been an excellent candidate for covering the situation in Sidney, Montana carefully and with grace. This is to say nothing of his platforming JD Hall, not once but twice. I agree with Jon's concern about accusations from some of guilt by association, here and elsewhere, and how those are carried too far to implicate relatively innocent parties. But the trouble is that for going on a decade, JD Hall has been skating by in the minds of many on a kind of innocence by association. That is to say, in Eastern Montana where I'm from, Jordan's ability to name drop powerful, high-profile names in American Christendom has given him an ability to bully and intimidate those in his local church and my home community. So please understand. When I hear almost only references to how we should pray for JD, and how hard this must all be for him, and hopefully JD is getting the help he needs, but hear not a word for nearly a decade looking into abuses by Hall in Eastern Montana where I'm from, it proves difficult to stomach. Jon says in his podcast episode yesterday, for instance, that he can't speak with confidence to what all has happened and is happening on the ground in Sidney, Montana. Yet to at least some extent, this must be admitted as due to Jon having not wanted to know, and having declined and passed up opportunities to investigate and cover this story using his platform. Unfortunately, here also, as with the recent F4F video by Rosebrough, Peters, and Johnson, I can't help but feel frustrated that the warnings given were private and to JD only all this time from influential men who speak out now, seemingly as much or more to protect their own reputations and influence as to comfort or inform any of the victims of physical and spiritual abuse which for a decade have lived in fear of their lives and livelihoods where I come from. Yet the stated reasons for not having gotten more involved, or for having platformed and endorsed Hall up until just now when he comes indefensible due to arrest and the filing of legal charges with the Sidney Police Department - these also make very curious saying anything at all now, or having platformed Jordan previously. I'm sorry to say, but once again a definite partiality seems apparent which is not godly, wise, or coherent. I reject it accordingly, and would encourage you to also. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Elon Musk is backing out of buying Twitter. In an official statement released to the public, Musk claims Twitter has refused to produce all of the documentation requested despite having months to do so. Twitter is threatening to sue to force Musk to follow through at the originally agreed price-point. I'm not so sure this is the end, though, and I hope Musk can negotiate a lower price for the social media giant - for all our sakes. In related news, someone blew up the Georgia Guidestones. The bomber is now being labeled a domestic terrorist, and authorities are seeking him out accordingly. But really now, who is the actual terrorist when you read the first of these 10 Commandments of the New World Order and consider its implications? Maintaining Earth's population at 500,000,000 implies something has to be done about several billions of the rest of us, after all. Meanwhile, as reported by Not the Bee, Shane Morris took to Twitter yesterday to explain how Christians have a long, rich history of engagement in politics, despite what Progressives and neutrality proponents allege. See here Augustine of Hippo and The City of God. And along those lines, a certain commenter has been active on my recent review of ‘The Everlasting Man' by G.K. Chesterton, making certain claims about Christianity and Christians which need to be addressed and refuted directly. But I feel confident that in answering these accusations against Christians I stand in a long, rich tradition in Church History - including the one that dates back to at least the 4th century AD with Augustine. Lastly, I'd like to respond to a YouTube video posted Thursday by ‘Fighting for the Faith' in which Chris Rosebrough, Phil Johnson, and Justin Peters weigh in on, as the video of the title puts it, ‘The Fall of JD Hall.' Predictably, comments on the video are turned off. But I'm going to comment here to say that a number of facts and claims herein strike me as hypocritical. Have these men showed partiality and neglected their duty to have not spoken up publicly sooner than this? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

In this episode we race through a bunch of broken things. The theme of this episode is the failures of Christian leaders. An exiled pastor (again), a pastor accused of abuse who sues his accusers, even more abuse scandals, and more. You can probably guess that this one gets us a bit riled up. Maybe one day Christian leaders will stop giving up reasons to get angry. Maybe. Today is Good Friday, and what does that mean? Or why do we say that this Friday is "Good" in the Christian calendar? It's not because we Christians are so good, only ever doing and saying what is right and pleasing to God. If we had been really and truly good there would have been no need for a Savior in Christ Jesus. Yet "while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Good Friday marks the day when Jesus was crucified. And that may be a puzzle and riddle, but it has an answer. Few things are more opposite "good" than the wrongful accusation, arrest, trial, flogging, mocking, and execution of good men. Yet that is what we celebrate on Good Friday. So how can we? We call this good, in short, because God is good. It was due to His goodness relative our lack of goodness that we who are in Christ are redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, the only perfect sacrifice which could have been offered to ultimately atone for our sins against the Holy and Righteous God. Non-Christians often struggle with the fact of the imperfection of Christian life and thought, sometimes imagined and other times real. But they miss the point that the promises of God are contingent not on our faithfulness and ability but on the faithfulness and ability of God to fulfill His promises. To be sure, the response from faithful and obedient Christians to the imperfection of the Church body and individuals is not to shrug but to repent; not to "sin that grace might abound all the more," but to press on in pursuit of the high calling we are blessed to answer in Christ. In light of that calling we do repent when we sin against God and our neighbor, and only in light of that high calling is restoration and fellowship possible. "Why do you call me good?" Luke's gospel account tells us Jesus asked the man who came to him calling him "good teacher." And the reason for the question followed immediately after. "Only God is good." Just so, that is also the reason we celebrate Good Friday and call it a good day. "Only God is good." That goes for Mark Driscoll as well as JD Hall, and that goes for you as well as for me. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support
Born in Montana, I was raised there until the age of ten. That's when my parents moved our family to southern Ohio. At twenty-five I moved back to Montana with my wife and our four boys. At thirty-two, we moved to Colorado with seven children in tow. My parents - a dad who was raised Mennonite and a mom who went to Pensacola Christian and Bob Jones - met at Cedarville University; my wife and I both went there also for a few semesters right after high school and right before marriage. I've seen Baptist churches across the country up-close. A Willow Creek affiliate was our home for a few years before we moved back to my home state from Ohio. We were very involved in CMA churches for almost the entire time we were in Montana, with a brief exception for JD Hall's assembly in Sidney. Now we have the great blessing of being in a church that's part of the M28 network. All this to say, I have seen and been very involved in churches across a fairly diverse cross-section of America, and there are a number of influences in my testimony and personal background which give a kind of broad picture of how Christian communities across this country organize themselves, make decisions, and handle problems and disputes. One of the most disheartening features I have observed time and again is a kind of deferential treatment which the donor class, if you will, is afforded in seemingly direct contradistinction to what James, the half-brother of Jesus admonishes about showing no partiality as we hold to the faith. The poor brother who comes in wearing shabby clothes very often is told to sit at our feet. The rich brother wearing fine clothes very often is given the seat of honor. As a result, the general testimony and prudence of the church suffers, just as we should expect it would whenever we orient our faith and practice in contrast to the clear commands in Scripture. Without naming names, I have seen very corporate-like growth strategies given preferential treatment when they seem threatened by a faithful interpretation of relevant texts. I have seen dysfunctional arrangements in the church overlooked and treated with kid-gloves when they involved even a perceived risk to those who "support the ministry." And about that - why does it always seem to be the case that "support the ministry" is synonymous with fiduciary contributions? I'm not sure I've ever heard that phrase used in relation to non-fungible services and contributions. But there you have it. Money talks and people listen - even in the Church. Elsewise James would not have issued the corrective and warning. Jesus warned us also about announcing our giving with tambourines and trumpets. And I think this speaks to a general caution we should have as we enter into troubled waters economically in this country. If we don't watch our step, we may quickly find Christians feeling compelled to not only place their businesses and careers first because thereby they provide for their families, but because thereby they also secure a place of prominence in many churches. I say this not to accuse anyone, but I cannot help it if several specific people and situations I know come to mind. "Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets." By no means is this to conflate poverty with righteousness or riches with wickedness. And yet it is to offer a word of much-needed caution. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support
