In this powerful episode, I sit down with Jeff Schoep, a former leader of the National Socialist Movement — once the largest neo-Nazi organization in the United States. For over 20 years, Schoep was a prominent figure in the white nationalist movement. But in 2019, he made a profound and public decision to walk away from extremism and dedicate his life to dismantling it. Now the founder of Beyond Barriers, a nonprofit focused on countering extremism and helping individuals disengage from hate-based ideologies, Schoep shares his unique insights into radicalization, transformation, and the power of redemption. He is also the author of American Nazi: From Hate to Humanity, a memoir tracing his journey from leading a hate group to becoming an advocate for peace and change. This is a conversation about ideology, personal responsibility, and the possibility of change — no matter how far someone has gone down a dark path. Speaking with The Younger YouHave you ever imagined engaging in a conversation with your younger, more naive, and possibly even a more hateful self? Imagine finding yourself grappling with the echoes of your past ignorance. The earlier version of you, fueled by limited experiences and misguided perspectives, expressing opinions that now seem cringe-worthy and uninformed. In an attempt to bridge the gap between your present self and that version, you realize the importance of growth and understanding. It becomes evident that the journey towards empathy and open-mindedness has transformed you, enabling you to challenge your past beliefs and recognize the flaws in your earlier thinking. Imagine such a conversation serving as a reminder of the transformative power of time and experience, highlighting the significance of evolving perspectives to foster a more compassionate and enlightened you. Imagine what it would be like speaking with the younger you.Be sure to tune in for this incredible conversation guest hosted by my friend Jeff Schoep of BeyondBarriersUSA.org, as he speaks with another former NSM member, Henry Paniccia, who is now challenging white supremacy ideology in a new and unique way.Who is Henry Paniccia? Henry Paniccia was involved in the world of white supremacy from 14 years old until he turned his back on that lifestyle and those beliefs at 21. Over the years, he was able to re-educate himself, deradicalize, and integrate into society as productive member. Two years ago he came up with the idea 'Conversations', his five-part video series where he goes through his former beliefs in explicit detail. While the content is undeniably alarming and comes with a heavy trigger warning, it is not without purpose and allows the viewer to take a deep look inside the life of a neo-Nazi. He sits on one end of the table as he is today (2023) and interviews his younger, 19-year-old self (2010). At times they speak a conversation of ideals. At times, a nostalgic trip down memory lane. And sometimes, an interrogation. ‘Conversations' is not for the faint of heart but if you can stomach it, you'll come out the other end with an incomparably better understanding of the issue at hand. Upon this, you'll understand the allure of the white supremacy world in our modern era.Learn more about and connect with Henry Paniccia online by checking out the full show notes at www.DerateTheHate.com.What have you done today to make your life a better life? Daryl Davis and Jeff Schoep are two of the most inspirational gentlemen I've ever met.  Both work at the forefront of a hands-on social movement aimed at building bridges of understanding and friendship ordinarily thought to be impossible.  Having had the opportunity to sit down with each of them individually (Davis Episode 24; Schoep Episode 29) they agreed to sit down with me at the same time to speak about what it will take to overcome the growing factionalism in our society.Daryl Davis has worked to improve race relations by seeking out, engaging in dialogue with, and befriending members of the Ku Klux Klan. In 1983, he was playing country western music in a "white" bar in Frederick, Maryland, when a patron came up to him and said it was the first time he had "heard a black man play as well as Jerry Lee Lewis". Davis explained to the man that "Jerry Lee learned to play from black blues and boogie-woogie piano players and he's a friend of mine". The white patron was skeptical and over a drink admitted he was a member of the KKK. The two became friends and eventually the man gave Davis contact information on KKK leaders.A few years later, Davis decided that he wanted to interview Klan members and write a book on the subject, to answer a "question in my head from the age of 10: 'Why do you hate me when you know nothing about me?' That question had never been answered from my youth".Davis eventually went on to befriend over twenty members of the KKK, and claims to have been directly responsible for between forty and sixty, and indirectly over two hundred people leaving the Klan.Over the course of his activities, Davis found that Klansmen have many misconceptions about black people, stemming mostly from intense brainwashing in their youth. When they got to know him, Davis claims, it was more difficult to maintain their prejudices. The artist has recounted his experiences in his 1998 book, Klan-destine Relationships: A Black Man's Odyssey in the Ku Klux Klan.Davis is not on a mission to "convert" bigots, white supremacists, Klansmen, or Nazis. Rather because of the earnest respect he offers all human beings and his core beliefs in the power of love, respect, fairness and his willingness to listen and find the heart of "the other," people are moved and transformed.  Over 200 Neo-Nazis, Klansmen and others who belong to organizations that preach hate have chosen to leave those organizations and give Daryl their robes, flags, insignia, and other symbols of hate. https://www.daryldavis.com/https://twitter.com/RealDarylDavisJeff Schoep, once America's most notorious neo-Nazi, now a consultant for the Simon Wiesenthal Center and an inspirational speaker for Conscious Campus, tirelessly holds keynote talks, lectures, and workshops from his unique vantage point. Lately, I've been fascinated by the psychology of change.   There came a point in late 2022 when I started to notice that many of the conversations I've had here on the show have carried with them an undertone of change. I've gone back and listened to many of the interviews, and change pops up quite frequently.   In fact, based on what I've gathered, one of the chapters of the book I'm currently writing asks the question: Do you believe people can change?   It is such a fun question because everyone I've ever asked that question of has answered me with an optimistic yes.   However, what I've noticed is that we often don't act this way. We act as if people cannot change on their own, and so we try to force change to happen.   And we all know how that goes, right? I mean, I know I love being forced to change, don't you?   But if we believe people can change, and we acknowledge true change can't be forced, then how and why does it happen?   This is what I wanted to explore with Jeff Schoep. Jeff was my guest here on the show back in episode 57, and you might recall that Jeff is the former leader of the largest neo-Nazi organization in the United States, the National Socialist Movement.   Now, Jeff has left that world and ideology behind, and instead, he works to deradicalize others.   Jeff is someone who has gone through a radical change, so who better to walk through the psychology of change with than Jeff? Who better to understand what brings about change and why it's so hard, even when the thing we are clinging to is, to so many of us, so obviously wrong?   Check out Jeff's work at https://beyondbarriersusa.org/.

Jeff was a guest on this show back in episode 57, and it was through conversations with Daryl that he finally came to understand that his worldview was wrong.   Daryl has been the driving force for hundreds of people to leave the KKK and other white supremacist groups, not through coercion or force or ridicule, but through curiosity and understanding and non-judgmental conversation.   Conversations like this one with Daryl are the reason I started this show, and I hope that by listening to it, you feel the full effect of what Daryl's approach to conflict resolution could have if we all followed his lead.   Watch Daryl's TEDx Talk at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4gly9n9RBo. Australian media outlets are increasing publishing the names and affiliations of people in fringe extremist movements. What happens when names and organisations are published? How do extremists act? Does it cause them to pull back or stick with the ideology that has brought them attention? Jeff Schoep is the founder of Beyond Barriers, a group that has the mission to help people disengage from extremism. Schoep led the National Socialist Movement for 25 years in the United States. Quite a few of the characters you've spent the last 4 years talking about show up in there. One of the major themes is the quandary Schoep and Heimbach have: both want to be part of a more presentable "white rights" movement, yet the only way they can get anyone to show up at their events is by inviting the Klan and waving swastikas. So they only way they can carry any weight is to hold the rallies with freaks and losers, yet nobody will take them seriously if they do... Consciously or not (in Heimbach's case it is explicit) they're all trying to get close to Richard Spencer during the time of the book (up until Charlottesville), because he is what they aspired to be (clean cut, eloquent, taken seriously intellectually if still reviled). Yet as Spencer tries to become a public figure, he's increasingly relying upon people like Heimbach to come to his rallies. It's a fascinating view of an extreme parallel to modern e-celebrity, where there's a food chain and people are used and disposed of on purely utilitarian grounds. Ideology is almost completely secondary. https://andrewsullivan.substack.com/p/john-mearsheimer-on-handling-russia https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/02/opinion/liberals-conservatives-democracy.html Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSFVD7Xfhn7sJY8LAIQmH8Q/join https://odysee.com/@LukeFordLive, https://lbry.tv/@LukeFord, https://rumble.com/lukeford https://dlive.tv/lukefordlivestreams Listener Call In #: 1-310-997-4596 Superchat: https://entropystream.live/app/lukefordlive Bitchute: https://www.bitchute.com/channel/lukeford/

#BeyondBarriersPodcast hosts Jeff Schoep and Acacia Dietz interview retired police officer Anthony Beattie. In Episode 27 we discuss the relationship between police and community, school safety, and the struggles police as individuals face in both personal and professional life. Anthony has over 20 years of service in law enforcement, most at a city declining into one of the most violent in the nation. The student attack at Columbine drove training across his department, evolving their every day tactics and response. Yet he did not see these changes in the way schools respond to incidents, evidenced in Parkland. Anthony began researching acts of violence and student crisis, and spends much of his time studying security as an ASIS member and PSP applicant. Now Anthony is a co-founder of PEACE (Police Engagement And Community Excellence) and is the Protection Coordinator for ATAP Security. The Follow-Up Question

For 25 years, Jeff Schoep led the largest neo-Nazi organization in the United States — the National Socialist Movement. For more than two decades, Jeff spread propaganda, hatred, and fear, and his extremist views caused pain, anguish, and suffering for many.   But just a few years ago, Jeff left that world behind. But what's more, Jeff didn't just leave, he started an organization, Beyond Barriers, to actively work to get others out as well — to recover minds and souls imprisoned by extremist ideologies.   How could someone go from such one extreme to another?   As you'll hear in our conversation, Jeff's hate-filled worldview began to crumble when he was simply asked questions that caused him to, in his words, begin to see the humanity in others.   This is the second part of a two-part series on extremism. If you missed part one, go back to episode 56 and my conversation with Jesse Morton, who for years led a radical Islamic group before he left that life and mindset behind.   Check out Jeff's work at https://jeffschoep.com and https://beyondbarriersusa.org.

Do you believe in redemption for radicals? Do you believe those who've once believed in a hateful ideology or been party to hateful organizations can do anything to redeem themselves? I think it's unwise to say that we cannot change the hearts and minds of those who've lead a life of hate and radical extremism. I would not be doing this podcast if I did not think they could be reached. This week's guest is a shining example of someone who has gone from extremism to counter-extremism and now devotes his time to de-radicalizing the haters instead of being the hater. Jeff Schoep, former Neo-Nazi and former leader of the National Socialist Movement here in the United States did not start out as a hateful extremist, but spent many years of his life on that side of the hate spectrum. You DO NOT want to miss this episode where I ask Jeff how he got to that point and what brought him back to a life not filled with hate and extremism.Hear from Jeff how great folks like Daryl Davis and Deeyah Kahn and her movie "White Right Meeting the Enemy" played an important role in his paradigm shift and how all the folks at BeyondBarriersUSA.org are helping to de-radicalize people of all types of extremism. Again, you DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS EPISODE!!What have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people, and that begins with each of us leading a better life. Kerry Noble joins co-hosts Jeff Schoep & Acacia Dietz for episode 19 of #BeyondBarriersPodcast. Since 2001, Kerry has been speaking out against hate, violence and the radical right. Kerry was involved with a group called CSA (Covenant, Sword & Arm of the Lord) during the late 1970's until they were raided by the FBI in April of 1985. CSA was a racist, paramilitary, survivalist, extremist group in rural Arkansas that believed in Christian Identity (a racist offshoot of Christianity). In this episode, Kerry tells of how in June 1983 he came within seconds of what could have been, at that time, the largest domestic terrorist act in US history, when he took a bomb into a gay church. But how the actions of the people in the church changed his perspective and he did not go through with the plan. This is an episode you won't want to miss.
