The Buena Vista Social Club was by far Cooder's biggest commercial success. At the time, he probably thought it was business as usual – working with a bunch of interesting and skilled musicians from a different musical culture, as he'd done so many times before. But this time he hit the jackpot. The importance of the album and the subsequent documentary cannot be overstated. It is the most popular recording of Cuban music in history, and it opened up the island's culture to the West as never before. This podcast frequently uses small snippets of musical recordings in podcast episodes for educational, review, and commentary purposes. In all cases, without exception, we believe this is protected by fair use in the U.S., fair dealing in the U.K. and EEA, and similar exceptions in the copyright laws of other nations. No more of the original than necessary is used, and excerpts are edited into long-form narratives, making the use transformative in nature.Written, produced and edited by Frank SchnelleTheme and background music by Chris HaugenAdditional background music by Jimmy Fontanez, Quincas MoreiraVoices produced with text-to-speech AIFollow us on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok and YouTubeThe Ry Cooder Story WebsiteSupport us on Patreon Hosted on Acast. For Hispanic Heritage Month I wanted to contribute this conversation I had the pleasure of having with Loida Esbri. An interview I anticipated being focused mainly on Loidas Salsa dance history, performing and teaching, ended up being a great journey of Loidas life and how she ended up here in Lancaster County and what she did to get where she wanted to be. Please take the time to listen. I promise you won't regret it.

On episode 10 of Mind Bloom (whaaat?) I invite you to celebrate the two-month anniversary of the podcast -- Every excuse is a good excuse to celebrate, right? I'll also be talking about Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS) or the entrepreneurial equivalent of a small child chasing shiny, colorful objects. Do you get distracted by new gadgets, new technologies, new means of achieving, basically, the same goals but for the sheer pleasure (or addiction) of learning a new skill or computer language? I certainly do, and I'll tell you to what extent this affects my relationship with work. Later, I'll be speaking with a dear friend of mine, Stacy Bowler, a former HR manager and currently a staunch advocate for speaking up and openly about mental illness. Stacy can be found on Instagram @stacy.bowler, the platform of her choice to share her mental health journey and her love for all things food and nutrition. Find Mind Bloom: On Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest @mindbloomyou.
