Danila Botha wants you to know something about her writing: it's not autobiographical. She pulls ideas and themes from real life, from the media and history, from current affairs and what she sees in the world. She is not personally a glitter-strewn closeted lesbian Orthodox woman, nor is she a drug addict who once met Anne Frank in a dream. But these are the kinds of concepts—distinctly Jewish stories with shades of halachic heterodoxy—that are packed into Things That Cause Inappropriate Happiness, her new collection of short stories, released April 2024. Botha joins The CJN's arts podcast, Culturally Jewish, to discuss her new collection and offer a glimpse into life as an openly Zionist author in an industry that has become infamously inhospitable to Zionist authors. With 37 verdicts of more than a million dollars, few lawyers in America can match the track record of success of New York trial lawyer Judy Livingston.  What's more, many of Judy's verdicts came at a time when few women were trial lawyers.  Join Ben and Rahul for their in-depth interview with Judy in which they explore the sources of the courage and fortitude that fueled her success.  Judy shares accounts of her early trial practice, where she literally had to create a new mold as a woman in the courtroom.  Judy discusses her approach to trying complex medical malpractice cases and connecting with a jury.  She talks about juggling life and the demands of raising a family with a husband who, like her, is a renowned trial lawyer.  If you are a trial lawyer or aspire to be, there is no way you can listen to this episode without feeling inspired.  About Judy LivingstonTop Personal Injury Attorneys | Kramer Dillof Livingston & Moore (kdlm.com) Judith A. Few people are better equipped to unravel the riddle of the Indian economy than the former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram Rajan. As the co-author (with Rohit Lamba) of the just published Breaking the Mold: India's Untraveled Path to Prosperity, Rajan lays out a strategy for Indian economic development that might allow the country to both maintain its much storied democracy and provide jobs and prosperity for its almost 1.5 billion people. While Rajan didn't use the term “third way” in our conversation, there is a sense that he's trying to navigate India between the Scylla of conventional western free market neo-liberalism and the Charybdis of the protectionism pursued by populists like Trump, Erdogen and perhaps the current Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Certainly no great fan of Modi's bureaucratic centralization, Rajan's path to prosperity lies in decentralizing economic power to its federal states. It's in the enlightened economic policies of states like Kerala, Rajan argues, that India can break the mold and become not just a prosperous society but also a model for other developing 21st century economies. Raghuram Rajan is the Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago business school. He was the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India between September 2013 and September 2016. Between 2003 and 2006, Dr. Rajan was the Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund. Dr. Rajan's research interests are in banking, corporate finance, and economic development. The books he has written include Breaking the Mold: Reimagining India's Economic Future with Rohit Lamba, The Third Pillar: How the State and Markets hold the Community Behind 2019 which was a finalist for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year prize and Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy, for which he was awarded the Financial Times prize for Business Book of the Year in 2010. Dr. Rajan is a member of the Group of Thirty. He was the President of the American Finance Association in 2011 and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In January 2003, the American Finance Association awarded Dr. Rajan the inaugural Fischer Black Prize for the best finance researcher under the age of 40. The other awards he has received include the Infosys prize for the Economic Sciences in 2012, the Deutsche Bank Prize for Financial Economics in 2013, Euromoney Central Banker Governor of the Year 2014, and Banker Magazine (FT Group) Central Bank Governor of the Year 2016. Dr. Rajan is the Chairman of the Per Jacobsson Foundation, the senior economic advisor to BDT Capital, and a managing director at Andersen Tax.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Breaking the Mould: India's Untraveled Path to Prosperity is a big new book by the economists Raghuram Rajan and Rohit Lamba. The book is both a critique of India's development model as well as a manifesto for reform. Most notably, it challenges the conventional wisdom that India's primary goal should be to transform the country into a blue-collar manufacturing powerhouse. Rajan and Lamba argue that India cannot duplicate China's development model, but it has the opportunity to leapfrog by focusing higher up the value chain. To discuss the book's ideas and its policy implications, Milan is joined on the show this week by Rohit Lamba. Rohit is an economist at New York University-Abu Dhabi and will soon be joining the Economics Department at Cornell University. He's twice worked in the chief economic advisor's office in the Indian Ministry of Finance. The two discuss what the critics get right about the Indian economy, why India cannot blindly follow the Chinese model, and how India can pivot “from brawn to brain.” Plus, Rohit and Milan discuss the manufacturing versus services debate, India's inward economic turn, and what India must do to upgrade its human capital.Episode notes:1. As part of Breaking Barriers: Women in Oncology, Maha H. Hussain, MD, and Sarah E. Fenton, MD, PhD, spoke with CancerNetwork® about developments in their careers and the evolution of research in the genitourinary oncology (GU) field. Additionally, they discussed their personal experiences in the field, which ranged from applying key pieces of advice from former mentors, handling challenges, and maintaining a healthy work/life balance. Hussain is a Genevieve E. Teuton Professor of Medicine at Northwestern Medicine, and her mentee and fellow colleague, Fenton, is an assistant professor of Medicine at Northwestern Medicine. The conversation partly focused on how the GU oncology landscape has evolved over time. According to Hussain, funding for new research and clinical trials has grown due to partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, which has accompanied a growth in median survival for patients with metastatic castration-resistant and metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. Looking ahead, Fenton said she hopes to see a greater proportion of patients achieve improved disease control, thereby leading to more treatment discontinuations or longer treatment-free intervals.  Additionally, Fenton described some of the advice she received that impacted the trajectory of her career and helped her decide to specialize in GU oncology. “You need to stick with things that are important to you, worth your time, and are going to help people,” Fenton said. “That is the best piece of advice that Maha has given me as I've been moving through and thinking about what projects I'm going to start and where I am going to work hard.” Hussain and Fenton also spoke about some of the personal challenges they have encountered in genitourinary oncology, including the difficulty of balancing their personal lives with professional aspirations. Both spoke to the importance and possibility of caring for their families while establishing priorities for their work. “You can parallel-track your career and your personal life. I would say motherhood is wonderful; it's a wonderful opportunity to be a mother,” Hussain said. “At the same time, it was a wonderful opportunity to be a physician and move the field there and work hard. Don't forget that your personal life is very important because a happy personal life also reflects on your work life.”

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”– Coco ChanelYou're a podcaster. You love creating your show. But sometimes marketing and promotion to stand out can feel like an insurmountable challenge. With so many podcasts (YouTube videos, television shows, radio stations, books, and blogs) vying for an audience's attention, how can you make sure your podcast doesn't get lost in the noise? While traditional advice like “know your audience” and “invest in quality equipment” are important, I've been thinking a lot lately about unconventional approaches to help you make a mark. Here are some out-of-the-box tips for podcasters looking to break the mold and find success in this competitive landscape:1. EMBRACE IMPERFECTIONPerfectionism can be the enemy of progress, especially in the world of podcasting. Instead of agonizing over every “um” and “uh,” embrace the raw and authentic nature of your content. Some of the most beloved podcasts are praised precisely because they feel like intimate conversations rather than scripted performances. Don't be afraid to let your personality shine through, flaws and all.2. EXPERIMENT WITH FORMATWho says a podcast has to follow a strict interview or storytelling format? Get creative and experiment with different structures and styles. Maybe you want to incorporate elements of improv comedy, or perhaps you're interested in creating an audio collage of soundscapes and music. The possibilities are endless, so don't be afraid to think outside the box and push the boundaries of what a podcast can be.Six months ago, I transformed the Inspired Money podcast from a conventional pre-recorded one-on-one interview show to a livestream with three or four guest panelists. It's been fun, challenging, and refreshing. I like to say having four guests is like a normal podcast on steroids. Embrace experimentation.3. CULTIVATE A NICHE WITHIN A NICHEIn a crowded market, finding your niche is crucial. But why stop there? Instead of simply focusing on a broad topic like “true crime” or “self-improvement,” dig deeper to carve out a niche within that niche. Maybe you're passionate about true crime stories with a supernatural twist, or perhaps you have a unique perspective on mindfulness and meditation. By honing in on a specific angle or theme, you can attract a dedicated audience who shares your interests.4. COLLABORATE, DON'T COMPETEInstead of viewing other podcasters as competitors, see them as potential collaborators. Reach out to fellow creators in your niche and explore opportunities for cross-promotion, guest appearances, or even co-hosted episodes. Not only does this expand your reach and introduce your show to new audiences, but it also fosters a sense of community within the podcasting world.5. FOCUS ON ENGAGEMENT, NOT NUMBERSIt's easy to get caught up in metrics like download numbers and subscriber counts, but true success in podcasting goes beyond mere statistics. Instead of fixating on quantity, prioritize quality engagement with your audience. Respond to listener feedback, foster meaningful conversations on social media, and create opportunities for your audience to participate in the content creation process. Building a loyal and engaged community around your podcast is far more valuable than chasing fleeting metrics.6. DON'T BE AFRAID TO PIVOTFinally, remember that flexibility is key for any creator. If something isn't working, don't be afraid to pivot and try something new. Your podcasting journey is a marathon, not a sprint. It's okay to course-correct along the way.In a world where...

In this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes talks about how he finds inspiration in everything around him including the clothes he wears. Wes gives us three quotes and discusses their meaning and tells stories or examples of each quote. It seems Wes' favorite shirt these days is his Move Forward shirt that can be found by going to the links in his bio on all socials. The shirt he is wearing in this episode is an acronym for Break The Mold. He looks to be different from anyone else and to be better every single day.The podcast not only brings value to the people who watch or listen to it, it brings value to Wes as well. It helps him to break the mold, move forward, and think outside the box. Sometimes people forget to bet on themselves. With that, the first quote is from Pete Wentz of the band Fall Out Boy. “Always bet on yourself no matter what the odds are. It means more to be in the race than to watch the victory lap from the stands.”  Wes uses baseball as an example: You can't be in the game in the dugout. Always bet on yourself because no one may bet on you. Have the belief that success can happen and don't listen to those who say it cannot be done. Their fears are keeping them from improving themselves, and they project them onto others who are working on themselves. Wes is confident in all that he does. He seeks advice on things but realizes he's the one that controls his destiny. The second quote is from Conan O'Brien.   “I like being tested. I get as scared as anyone, but the feeling of putting yourself on the line, betting on your talent, and having it work; that's the most exhilarating feeling in the world”  Chadd Wright was a Navy SEAL who ran Ultra marathons of 100 miles. If he looks at the 100 miles as a whole, it's very daunting.   The key to the race is tackling a little at a time... a mile at a time. Wes has never had an episode, clip, or video go viral. He does not make a lot of money on the podcast, but he will not stop. The most effective way to move forward is to tackle the task right in front of you. When it comes to emails, Wes concentrates on one email at a time taking his many emails in small increments.  Doing tasks this way helps from being overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. The third quote is by T Harv Ecker. “Successful people have fear, successful people have doubts, and successful people have worries. They just don't let these feelings stop them.”  Compete with yourself and not anyone else. Strive to be better than you were yesterday. Wes had some challenges lately and some people were interfering with his success. He decided he will control his destiny and is taking steps to make that happen. #shapingsuccesspodcast #westankersley #patreon #moveforward #podcast #breakthemold #bedifferent #value #thinkoutsidethebox #betonyourself #petewentz #falloutboy #success #confident #control #improvement #destiny #quote #test #chaddwright #navyseal #ultramarathon #race #taskEmail: wes@westankersley.comPatreon: Patreon.com/Wes TankersleyLinkedIn: LinkedIn.com/westankersleyFacebook: facebook.com/westankersley                 instagram.com/wes.tankersleyTik Tok: TikTok.com/wes.tankersley              TikTok.com/shapingsuccessSupport the showFor merchandise, podcast and youtube: westankersley.com Check out our sponsor The Warriors Collection for coffee, gear and more use code TANK at check out for a special Discount! https://warriorscollectionbrand.com/ Follow Shaping Success https://shapingsuccesspodcast.buzzsprout.com/ Email Wes@westankersley.com for guest ideas or to be on the show!

Many of us could be silently battling the effects of mold in our homes, unaware that it's the sneaky culprit behind our unexplained ailments. If you listen to just one of my podcasts this month, make this the one.  Dr. Jill Crista is an internationally renowned mold expert.  And as you'll hear, even though she is one of the world's top experts in mold poisoning, upon moving into a new home, she witnessed her family grappling with mysterious symptoms, later identified as mold-induced. Alarmingly, as Dr. Jill points out, over a quarter of buildings might harbor conditions ripe for toxic mold growth due to water damage. We also have a potential third strike coming as SAG-AFTRA looks to strike against the video game publishers. Doug Bowser opens up about Nintendo's future, and Skull & Bones hits another hurdle. Adam Drive, Aaron Paul and others speak out against the AMPTP, Toho drops a big new Godzilla trailer, and Ahsoka was amazing. Also my top 10 80s animated movies gets a shoutout.

Norm enforcers are a real problem in today's world. They can stifle free speech and creativity, and they can create a climate of fear and intimidation. We need to be aware of them and their tactics, and we need to speak out against norm enforcement. In this episode of The Chris Abraham Show, Chris beckons listeners to contemplate the roles and responsibilities we each bear within the complex interplay of social media, information dissemination, and societal norms. We are urged to consider whether silent compliance or thoughtful, responsible contribution serves as the most appropriate course of action in our interconnected society. We've all encountered them - the individuals who take it upon themselves to enforce norms and rules, often on complete strangers. Picture the overzealous hall monitor at school or the driver who obstinately drives at the posted speed limit in the passing lane under the guise of upholding the rules. In the online world, a similar breed thrives, aiming to enforce what they deem to be appropriate behavior, opinions, and content on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even personal Mastodon instances like abraham.su. These social sentinels often view themselves as protectors, shielding the masses from the alleged dangers of misinformation and disinformation. However, one must ask - is their zealous moderation a service or a disservice to public discourse? Chris Abraham highlights examples like Alex Jones, Joe Rogan, Tim Pool, Jimmy Dore, Russell Brand, Glenn Beck, and Adam Curry. These personalities have faced censure and suppression, only for some of their opinions, initially dismissed as conspiracies or misinformation, to be later acknowledged as having substance. This raises questions regarding the true motivations behind suppressing certain narratives, and whether this form of information control veers into the realm of intellectual authoritarianism. While norm enforcement can be seen as a way to maintain social order, it can also be dangerous. When norm enforcers try to control the thoughts and behaviors of others, they can stifle free speech and creativity. They can also create a climate of fear and intimidation, where people are afraid to express their own opinions or beliefs. Where does this leave us, the individuals traversing this intricate social landscape? Is the prudent choice to quietly conform, maintain a low profile, and not challenge the status quo? Or is there merit in standing tall, speaking one's mind, and passionately sharing thoughts and feelings across social media platforms? As a society, it is imperative that we foster environments that encourage the expression of a plurality of voices. Suppressing opinions is not the answer; rather, the objective should be to cultivate spaces where diverse perspectives can be heard and critically assessed. This includes developing discerning judgment and critical thinking skills as consumers and sharers of information. Norm enforcers exist for a number of reasons. One reason is that they believe that it is their duty to protect others from harm. They may believe that certain ideas or behaviors are dangerous or harmful, and they want to prevent others from being exposed to them. Another reason is that norm enforcers may feel a sense of satisfaction from enforcing norms. They may enjoy the feeling of power that comes from telling others what to do. This is why it is important to be critical of the norms and rules that we are presented with. We should not be afraid to question them, and we should not be afraid to speak out against them if we believe that they are wrong. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/support

Coming into the hair world, did you come in with expectations?    The stigma around “hair” is.. You'll never make money. You'll never be successful. You are giving up.    You're “just” a hairstylist.    Here's the thing. You are either IN it or not. Are you willing to put in the work? There is no right or wrong way to get to the next level. The only thing you really have to do is COMMIT.    Just because you got another certification doesn't mean you're going to be successful behind the chair. If you are not tracking your numbers and your progress, then are you really being successful?    There is so much more to being a hairstylist. You need to be marketing, you need systems & processes, you need to keep track of your numbers, and you need contracts.    There is also SO much growth that you will find once you start actually taking charge of your life. When you find the power within yourself to put in the effort and really get to know all the ins & outs of your business, then you will start to really see the growth in YOURSELF and also your business.    So what are you going to start doing? What are you going to stop doing?    In order to really GROW, you need to evaluate the things in your life, and the things in your business and really focus on what is and is NOT working.    THEN - make adjustments.   If you're ready to make those adjustments but don't know where to start, then its time you join us in education.   Email support@nbr.education to learn which NBR® Education Opportunity is right for you!   Your success is our biggest goal, so let us show you how to get there through our proven path.

Break the Mold (ft. Heather McGowan)Sometimes the best advice is to ignore the advice.OPENING QUOTE:“In the past two weeks, it was diamonds, hairdressers, biopharmaceuticals, education, quality control. Next week, it's education. So it's all over the place. And how do you take that same insights or series of insights or decide which ones are important to which audiences so you can scale it?”- Heather McGowanGUEST BIO:One of the most successful speakers today, Heather McGowan is a leading voice on the future of work and the fourth industrial revolution. She's helped lead organizations around the world in the quest to balance performance and wellbeing, and her latest book The Adaptation Advantage was named one of the Top 30 business books of 2021. It delivers a groundbreaking model for helping leaders let go, learn fast, and thrive. Links:WebsiteLinkedInTwitterCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[6:28] - Uniquely Authentic, Uniquely SuccessfulBreaking the mold & making careersPeople are always telling Heather how authentic she is. But the truth is that she begins from a very simple truth— people want to have a conversation. When Heather steps onstage, she has an idea she wants to convey and she's out to do it in the most authentic, straightforward, and memorable way. Sometimes, it's as simple as that— though it's certainly never easy.[12:29] - Adapting Your MessageSame mission, different audienceHow do you deliver the same message to a group of 5,000 people for 12 minutes as you do a group of 100 people for 75 minutes? The answer is adaptability. You have to be able to identify the core truths and value in your message, then build the rest of your message around them based on the audience, setting, time limit, and other factors. It's a skill, and like any skill it can be practiced and perfected.[9:25] - The Future of Work & The Future of KeynotesThe world is changing. Are you changing with it?The future of keynote speaking has a lot in common with the future of work— it's becoming more connected, less rigid in its formulas, and more open to unique perspectives and ways of doing things. That can only be a good thing, and it will allow for a new group of speakers to come up and continue changing the game for generations to come.[22:13] - Bringing Diversity to the StageEquity and inclusion are #1Heather's goal? To see a time when all of the things about her that are currently selling points relating to her uniqueness— such as her orientation— are simply background to her message. But for now, she's proud to be a driving force helping more diverse voices reach keynote stages. It's something we should all aspire to do in our own ways.RESOURCES:[2:37] The Adaptation Advantage[4:18] About Amplify FestivalFollow Heather McGowan:WebsiteLinkedInTwitterFollow Josh Linkner:FacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYouTubeABOUT MIC DROP:Brought to you by eSpeakers, hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success.
