In this episode I discuss the Theravada Buddhist tradition I am rooted in and the lineage of teachers that I learn from. For more reading on Buddhism I recommend Buddhism: A Concise Introduction by Smith and Novak. Some of the teachers I mention in this episode include Gil Fronsdal, Michele McDonald, Jack Kornfield, Ruth Denison, Sayadaw U Pandita, Joseph Goldstein, JoAnna Hardy, Mary Stancavage, and Dipa Ma. Living Buddhist Masters is an excellent book about teachers that have influenced many of my teachers. I share about my practice at The Insight Meditation Society and two of the traditions that I have learned about there; The Thai Forest Tradition and the Mahasi Tradition

In an election season characterized by misinformation, mistrust, and now a positive covid test from the President-- we've been plunged headlong into a black hole of uncertainty. So here at the Ten Percent Happier podcast, we've decided to serve up some deep counter-programming. Unlike the campaign coverage you'll get everywhere else in the universe, in this special “Election Sanity” series we won't have arguments and we won't talk polls. We're going to help you navigate all of this tumult and toxicity in a way that allows you to be both engaged and calm. We're building this series around an ancient Buddhist list (the Buddhists love listicles, as we've discussed on the show) called The Four Brahma Viharas. That phrase, Brahma Viharas, translates, literally into “divine abodes.” At first blush, the notion of divine abodes -- or heavenly mind states -- may sound a little grandiose. But I promise you this whole thing is actually very much down-to-earth. These are four mental skills that we can train through meditation. In Buddhist circles, the four skills are commonly referred to as: lovingkindness, compassion, sympathetic joy (which means taking joy in the happiness of others), and equanimity. I like to make them a little more user-friendly by calling them: friendliness, giving a crap, the opposite of schadenfreude, and staying cool. The proposition here is radical; instead of defaulting to hatred or indifference at this fraught moment in human history, can you cultivate the opposite? Science suggests the meditation practices designed to help you build these skills can have all sorts of physiological and psychological benefits. In this special series of episodes, we'll show you how to practice, and also how to operationalize these skills in your life at a time when we— and the world— need them most. We'll be dropping new episodes, with a different teacher, every Monday in October. Today we're kicking off the podcast series with insight meditation teacher JoAnna Hardy. She's been on this show before, and she's also featured on the app, where she teaches guided meditations, and a whole course about using meditation to help you live an ethical life. She also recently co-wrote the handbook Teaching Mindfulness to Empower Adolescents, and is a founding member of the Meditation Coalition. In our conversation, JoAnna starts by giving us a user-friendly overview of the Four Brahma Viharas, and then we do a deep dive on the first of these mental skills: friendliness. And if this concept -- or the thought of applying it to a person you can't stand -- makes you squirm...great. JoAnna's here to argue that metta is an edgy-- and not at all corny-- practice. This podcast episode is offered humbly as a practice to support and uplift in times of crisis. This is recorded as America experiences widespread protests and riots in response to the deep, and too-long-ignored racism prevalent in every layer of our culture. This talk and this practice, I hope, are useful for all beings everywhere as we bravely and unflinchingly face the oppressions, discriminations, forced exoduses and genocides that occur anytime we create the label “other”.  I encourage you to listen to a myriad of voices alongside my own: Reverend Angel Kyodo Williams, Sebene Selassie, Spring Washam and Joanna Hardy are a few of the teachers I follow. *************** I can't remember who said it or where I read it, but I remember reading somewhere in my studies that meditation eventually asks you to feel The Great Heartbreak of the World. At the time, I remember thinking, “ummmmm. No thanks.” Who wants to feel heartbreak?! What I wanted was to feel better: less stress, more happiness. So, I meditated. Sometimes regularly; sometimes not. Usually not for more than 10 minutes, and I did start to feel better. So, I meditated with more consistency for longer time frames. I read some books and studied with teachers I respected, and the more I practiced, the more I found myself moving from my head to my heart. I was feeling MORE. I was more aware of my own feelings in everyday situations, and I was more aware of when I was purposely NOT feeling or numbing out to world events as if they didn't affect me. Eventually, there was a moment when “The Great Heartbreak of the World” finally resonated - I understood what that teacher meant. He/she meant we have to feel it all. We can't ignore the pains of any being's suffering if we are truly awake. In this moment, as cities across America experience the rage of oppression and racism gone on for far too long, we meditate. We meditate not to feel better but to feel. As Pema Chodron says,  “To stay with that shakiness—to stay with a broken heart, with a rumbling stomach, with the feeling of hopelessness and wanting to get revenge—that is the path of true awakening. Sticking with that uncertainty, getting the knack of relaxing in the midst of chaos, learning not to panic—this is the spiritual path.”  Today's meditation practice is a compassion practice that can apply to any person or group of people that you choose to practice for - it can be practiced for yourself, if you are the one who needs that loving support today. When we practice, we are deeply connecting to the thread of humanity we all share. Let us stand {and sit} together in solidarity and in love. Compassion: A Quivering of the Heart w/ Kara HaneyCompassion (Karuna) is one of the primary heart teachings. It is the felt experience in response to a being’s pain. When we understand this through practice, we are able to cultivate compassion for our own pain and the pain of others. Thus compassion becomes a vehicle of connection, further dissolving the myth of separateness and isolation. This felt sense of separateness, the identification of being separate from, not included, or abandoned; perpetuates our pain and often is a reason why we use substances and process addictions. By developing this practice of compassion, we can begin to turn towards and see the pain, not run from or suppress it, but to recognize, open to and acknowledge that pain and sorrow exists and is a common experience with all beings. Let’s care about pain together and see what arises in seeing the true nature of suffering in the world.Kara Haney has practiced meditation and studied Buddhism since 1993. With over twenty years in recovery, her background includes both Buddhist practice in the understanding of craving and twelve-step recovery. Since 2013 she has assisted in starting Buddhist recovery groups within communities, addiction treatment facilities, and jails; and continues to be a foundational member and mentor for the Buddhist recovery community. Kara was empowered to teach by Bob Stahl and was also trained to facilitate Mindfulness and Buddhist meditation by JoAnna Hardy and Vinny Ferraro of the former Against the Stream Meditation Society. She teaches weekly Dharma groups, daylong retreats, and offers Dharma courses such as "A Year to Live" and "Eightfold Path."
