Beth Lisick's debut novel, Edie on the Green Screen, is about a Bay Area Gen-X rebel, an "It Girl" in the late '90s who faces her own obsolescence in 2010s San Francisco. It is fundamentally about how we manage change, and the change our world has experienced since this story's inception only makes Edie and her travails more relevant to the moment. Join a chat about Lisick's self-described "crabby bartender," her myopia and troubled awakening, and the challenges of maintaining sanity as the pillars of your ego crumble. Lisick, co-founder of the Porchlight Storytelling Series, a wickedly entertaining live event that's lit up SF and other cities for 18 years, breathes new life into some of the city's best lost niches, characters, and scenes.

On Ep 134 Hosts Paco Romane and George Chen recapped the twisty and terrifying Netflix documentary Don’t F**K With Cats (like we don't know what "F**k" means) with the hilarious and insightful Tara Jepsen. We had no idea that there was such a thing as “Rule Zero” of the Internet. It makes sense, especially because cute cat videos have been the best thing the Internet has brought us. The rule says, “Don’t fuck with cats, or we’ll find you.”TRIGGERS - a guideline to triggering animal abuse scene timecodes (in episode one) were kindly shared with us by @hilldawgIf you've never heard of Luka Magnotta, consider yourself lucky. Someone is anonymously torturing and killing kittens and posting videos online. A home-schooled Canadian sociopath creates a bunch of sock puppet accounts about how cool he is with poorly photoshopped images and plants rumors about dating a serial killer. The heroes of the piece are facebook sleuths who crowdsource clues, tearing apart aspects of the video to try and locate and identify the perpetrator. Along the way, the hunters become the hunted, online vanity and murderous impulses clash, and we have to ask whether these tragic events could have been averted.Tara Jepsen is a writer and comic living in Los Angeles. Her novel "Like a Dog" was published by City Lights in 2017. She has made many short films with collaborator Beth Lisick, and they have a new one coming out this year. We were so excited to join forces with both the Contemporary Jewish Museum and the California Institute for Integral Studies for a night of stories exploring our understanding of self and the fluidity of identity. An amazing group shared personal stories inspired by the CJM exhibition Show Me as I Want to be Seen. The lineup: Kelly Beardsley has been telling wacky stories around SF for the last 15 years.  His stories have been heard on This American Life, The California Report, KQED and a bunch of Porchlight events. He works as a BART train operator and lives in Oakland. India Marie Chakraverty was raised in a small town in the Central Valley before enrolling at San Francisco State University. They are getting a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing and loving every minute of their starving artist life. They live with their boyfriend and cat (one for now) in this wonderful and expensive city and work as the General Books supervisor at the SFSU Bookstore. They are working on three novels and two short stories and aspire to be a rich author, but will settle to be an editor, because reading is wonderful and who wouldn’t love to get paid to read all day. They love cats, books, Star Wars, and so many other things, but love to smile even more. Eddie Jen is a writer and drag queen in San Francisco. He writes about life, beauty, and food, and recently won his first case as an attorney when he obtained asylum for a Guatemalan minor. Juliana Delgado Lopera is an award-winning Colombian writer, historian, speaker and performance artist based in San Francisco. The recipient of the 2014 Jackson Literary award  she’s the author of Quiéreme (Nomadic Press 2017) and ¡Cuéntamelo! an illustrated bilingual collection of oral histories by LGBT Latinx immigrants which won a 2018 Lambda Literary Award and a 2018 Independent Publisher Book Award. She's received fellowships from Brush Creek Foundation of the Arts, Lambda Literary Foundation, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and The SF Grotto, and an individual artist grant from the SF Arts Commission. She's the recipient of the 2016 Jeanne Córdova Words Scholarship. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and has appeared in Eleven Eleven, Foglifter, Four Way Review, Broadly, TimeOut Mag to name a few. She’s the creative director of RADAR Productions  a queer literary non-profit in San Francisco.    Donna Persona is a 71 year old San Francisco transgender/ gay community activist and drag queen performer. She began her career and activism at the age of 59. At age 20, she was associated with SF drag legends. Around 2005 i reunited with then and began a public life. She has been of the boards of Trans March, Trans Visibility, and Trans Day of Remembrance. She has worked to name SF streets after a trans woman and an historical event in The SF Tenderloin,  Compton's Cafeteria Riot.  She went on to co- write a play about the riot which had a successful run in San Francisco last year and will be remounted this year. She is currently working with a filmmaker on a documentary on her experiences. She also continues to perform on stages, stay involved with activism, and entertain gay seniors and patients in hospitals and several retirement homes. Donna helped fly the transgender flag with Mayor London Breed and has been nominated as Grand marshall for 2019 Pride. Nic Sommerfeld is an Oakland based actor and playwright, originally from Montana.  They wrote for Best of Playgound 2018 and have written for UCSF, Killing My Lobster, and The Olympians Festival. This episode is the first of several featuring recordings from our live show in Greenfield, MA at Hawks and Reed, back in June. Sarah Wisby, writer and recent transplant to Western Mass, and I, talked, a couple months after the show, about performance, writing, what success means to an artist as opposed to what it means to the public who perceives/judges artists, about being a character in someone else's (in her case, Michelle Tea's) work and a movie and meeting the person who played you in the movie based on that work, and so much more. You'll also hear the two swell stories Sarah read at the show. (You can find episodes with two of the other performers, Beth Lisick and Myra Bartok, in our archive, and episodes with the others, Old Pam, Ansel Appelton, and Zak Trojano are soon to come.)Here's the bio from Sarah's website. Sarah Fran Wisby writes poetry, short fiction, memoir and essays, preferring always to deepen and subvert genre by way of the hybrid form. Her book Viva Loss was published in 2008 by Small Desk Press. Recent work can be found in Eleven Eleven Journal and Rumpus Women Volume 1, and heard on Invisible Cities Audio Tour #2: The Armada of Golden Dreams. She’s also been published in Instant City, Sparkle and Blink, Digital Artifact, and The Encyclopedia Project Volume 2, F—K, for which she was honored to write the entry for fuck. Daniel Oppenheimer 2Hello All,Part 2 of my conversation with Beth Lisick will be next up. For now, here's a timely interruption. You may recall, in the last episode, I mentioned that (to quote, well, me) :"This week I took a huge, manic, obsessive dive down the Aziz Ansari/#metoo rabbit hole, and like to think I have takes that haven't yet been took. But after writing about 18 (single space) pages of notes and compiling dozens of articles and audio and video (google Samantha Bee and Aziz for one of the most recent, and best, responses), when I went to record ... well, I'm just not skilled enough yet to say what I need to say as concisely as would make me feel comfortable to share with the world."It just so happened that right after that, Dan Oppenheimer (Episode 11) called me up wanting to talk through that same stuff and what he sees as the frustrating toxicity of most ostensibly serious discourse on social media. So I asked if I could use his need to both satisfy my own AND make an episode. So we talked ... and talked ....I think it made both of us feel a little better. Maybe it will you too.  Among the topics we dug into:PatriarchyRacism#metooThe Aziz Ansari moment / bad dates and bad daters/ discord between 2nd and 3rd Wave FeministsThe toxicity of social mediaThe dangers of stereotyping, even of straight, white, middle-aged men! (even when based on valuable/sound movements/ideas/etc. such as patriarchy, #metoo)Child-rearing / sexual moresMale feminismPuritanismvirtue signallingHigh-school sex (& why we didn't get much)and ...PARKING IN THE DEEP SPOTFind Dan and his work at: http://danieloppenheimer.com. Happy 2018 All! This week I took a huge, manic, obsessive dive down the Aziz Ansari/#metoo rabbit hole, and like to think I have takes that haven't yet been took. But after writing about 18 (single space) pages of notes and compiling dozens of articles and audio and video (google Samantha Bee and Aziz for one of the most recent, and best, responses), when I went to record ... well, I'm just not skilled enough yet to say what I need to say as concisely as would make me feel comfortable to share with the world. My first two tries at recording the intro ran over half an hour, longer than the actual conversation with Beth, which is just not what this here show is about. That personal failure out of the way, I think my guest Beth Lisick is super swell and the episode is more than just fine. But before I get to Beth, I would like to share with you, though, the best writing I've read this week on the Aziz stuff, by Katie Anthony. Discovering KA's work (http://www.katykatikate.com) has been worth all of the reading and writing that didn't end up leading to talking for this show. (I think) she should be required reading for men who want to do better.  (She also has a podcast with Ronit Feinglass Plank called Mouthy Messy Mandatory that I just listened to the first time last night and is also awesome) BUT HER WRITING! If you want a jumping off point, check out "the katykatikate guide to apologies" which is super relevant to today's episode.  I could go on all day about Ms. Anthony's powerful, funny, and useful words, but her work can speak way better for how great it is than my description of it ever would. Now, on to our show!Beth Lisick is a writer and actor. She is the author of five books and has appeared in films screened at Cannes, Sundance, and the San Francisco International Film Festival. Her books include the memoir collection Yokohama Threeway and Other Small Shames (City Lights), the New York Times bestselling comic memoir Everybody Into the Pool (Harper/ReganBooks), the gonzo self-help manifesto Helping Me Help Myself (Harper/William Morrow), the story collection This Too Can Be Yours (Manic D), and the performance poetry/story collection Monkey Girl (Manic D). She lives with her husband and son (and probably a pet or two, I forgot to ask) in Brooklyn, and is working on a novel. We spoke on the phone in December. (As ever, all episodes can be found pretty much wherever pods are cast: iTunes, Soundcloud .... or at 15minutesjamieberger.com)Thanks for listening!-Jamie See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Like a Dog (City Light Publishing) A scrappy young skateboarder's story of underground worlds and fringe existences, confusing family relationships and the struggle for intimacy. Paloma is aimlessly winging it through life. A skateboarder in her early 30s, she takes low-paying jobs, drinks neon-colored wine coolers in the park with her best friend, and drives to the Central Valley to skate the empty swimming pools dotting the sun-blasted landscape. Paloma struggles to have a relationship with her brother Peter, whose opiate addiction makes that nearly impossible. She enjoys occasional doses of something like closeness whenever Peter is sober, and these rare moments keep her lunging for his affections. Her delusions about the nature of addiction—along with a steady intake of alcohol—manage to keep the looming threat of his death by overdose at a comfortable enough distance. When Peter lands a lucrative position managing a pot farm in Mendocino County, he offers Paloma a job. She shines in her new role, selling weed to celebrities in Los Angeles and making good money for the first time. With a new sense of self-confidence she decides to try out the world of stand-up comedy, and though she's absolutely terrible at it, she's happier than she's ever been. As Peter slides into a dangerous spiral, Paloma does her best to roll with the ups and downs, life's beginnings and endings. Praise for Like a Dog: "Tara Jepsen's Like a Dog is outrageously funny and soul-scrapingly grim, in the tradition of our most intrepid, shameless, and shame-filled comedians and storytellers. It also announces a singular new voice in American fiction—one which is deeply alive, hard-hitting, and tender."––Maggie Nelson, author of The Argonauts "This book beat the crap out of me. I am bruised and laughing. Thank you Tara Jepsen, may I have another?"—Daniel Handler, author of All The Dirty Parts "Tara Jepsen captures the absurd, animal humor of residing in a human female body on planet Earth like no other, and Like a Dog sets it loose within a hazy California underground of abandoned skate pools, weed farms and comedy open mics. Eccentric and insidery, taking on the bonds of family and addiction, the effort to find a life and the drive to end it, Like a Dog brims with hyper-conscious gems of hilarity and pathos."––Michelle Tea, author of Black Wave Tara Jepsen is a writer and actor living in Los Angeles, California. She's appeared in Emmy-winning series Transparent. She and longtime collaborator Beth Lisick created, wrote and acted in original web series Rods and Cones, released by Jill Soloway and Rebecca Odes's Wifey.tv in September 2014, named one of Indiewire's 25 Best Series/Creators of 2014. Tara has written and performed original sketch comedy with Lisick throughout the U.S. since 1999. They have appeared at Dixon Place in NYC, at San Francisco's Sketchfest, at the UCB in Los Angeles, and myriad additional venues. Jepsen has been published by The Believer, xojane.com, and SF Weekly, among others. She has toured and performed extensively with the seminal queer cabaret Sister Spit since 1997. And, she co-hosted the legendary San Francisco open mic K'vetsh at a gay men's bath house for over ten years. Author, activist, and queer/feminist icon Michelle Tea is the author of five memoirs, including the award-winning Valencia (now a film). Her novels include Mermaid in Chelsea Creek, the first in a Young Adult fantasy trilogy published by McSweeneys. Tea is the Founding Artistic Director of RADAR Productions, a queer-feminist literary non-profit in San Francisco and is the editor of Sister Spit Books, an imprint of City Lights. Her writing has appeared in The Believer, n+1, Buzzfeed, The Bold Italic, Marie Claire, xoJane.com and many other print and web publications.

On EP 24 Paco and George talk with filmmaker Marjorie Sturm about her documentary The Cult of JT LeRoy. We talk about JT Leroy's first two novels Sarah and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things and we get into hero worship, cons, Rachel Dolezal, improvisation, filmmaking and much more. Authorized and unauthorized, The Cult of JT Leroy received two Jury Awards for Best Feature Documentary (SF IndieFest and Oslo/Fusion International) in 2015 and played at top-tier festivals around the world. Ethically charged, controversial, and confusing, JT’s life and death sprang open a Pandora’s box of powerful questions about literature and culture, identity and celebrity, and the reality of the society we live in. Fraud? Art? Sociopathy? Complicity? The Cult of JT Leroy is a testament to this bizarre and elaborate story that has captured the attention of the world’s media and perplexes to this day.Jeremiah "Terminator" LeRoy was a literary persona created in 1994 by American writer Laura Albert. LeRoy was supposedly born October 31, 1980 in West Virginia. His backstory was one of prostitution, drug addiction, and vagrancy in California. After his first novel Sarah was published, "LeRoy" started making public appearances. A January 2006 article in The New York Times declared that the person acting as LeRoy in public was Albert's sister-in-law, Savannah Knoop. Knoop wrote her own memoir of the experience called Girl Boy Girl. An Albert-endorsed documentary by Jeff Feuerzeig, Author: The JT LeRoy Story, premiered at Sundance 2016.Marjorie Sturm is an award-winning filmmaker whose films span a broad perspective: narrative, documentary, and experimental. She was an interviewer, cinematographer, and Bay Area media wrangler for the 99%-Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film which premiered at Sundance in 2013. She received the Grand Festival Award at Berkeley Video and Film Festival for her short narrative "Smoke the Pipe Dream." Sturm has created social activism videos for Consumers Union and worked as a social worker with the mentally ill homeless in San Francisco's Tenderloin district. Sturm studied Psychology at the University of Michigan, and received her MFA in Cinema from San Francisco State University. She is the younger sibling of the graphic novelist James Sturm and the painter/photographer Ilona Sturm. Sturm lives in San Francisco with composer Ernesto Diaz-Infante and their two children.(the list of writers recommended by Michelle Tea can be found here at The Bold Italic)Follow us on:Twitter: @supdocpdocastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.

David West, revered San Francisco poet is our guest for Part One of a two-part episode. Like Bucky Sinister, whose interview kicked off our first podcast, David West was a prolific participant of the San Francisco spoken word scene of the 1980s and 1990s, a scene that spawned such memorable writers as Daniel Higgs, Michelle Tea and the Sister Spit collective, Eli Coppola, Beth Lisick, David Lerner and many more. Week in and week out, David West would bring the reading's volume down to stillness as his gentle voice and his writing brought a ragged range of characters to life, some transcendent and some miserable, but David made them all human and beguiling in their own way. As wise and he was funny, David has slipped away from the world of readings to quietly ponder Shakespeare, politics and the arts while bringing a certain grace as a secretary hiding away in the business world. This episode was recorded in David's Bernal Heights kitchen as the sun and a bottle of red wine slowly disappeared. Unfolding like most of the sprawling two-part episodes of FUN 2 KNOW, the first part tells David's origin story, traveling from factories in Ohio, to an ill-fated stop at Harvard onto the mid-seventies world of Harvey Milk's San Francisco and beyond. The second part turns from biography of conversation, and David is a fount of insight and humor into people and today's world.

Beth Lisick decided she was done writing autobiographical essays--but as she started work on her novel, she realized she still had a number of personal stories, stories that didn't necessary fit into larger literary concepts, but that she still wanted to tell. Focusing on "cringe-worthy" moments in her life, she's collected several of these vignettes in Yokohama Threeway. In this episode of Life Stories, we talk about the paradox of loving what she does when what she does is lay out all her worst moments for the world to see, and about how she was able to return to that novel with a renewed sense of energy.

Beth Lisick is the guest. Her new book, Yokohama Threeway and Other Small Shames, is due out from City Lights Publishers on September 24, 2013.  Kathleen Hanna raves "This book is fucking great. There is a story in it called ‘PANDA AMBULANCE!!!’ How is Beth Lisick not as famous as David Sedaris?” And Matthew Zapruder says "These short pieces, which at first seem casually constructed and connected, are immediately funny, ironic, personable, embarrassing and oddly appealing. Yet quickly they accumulate into deep emotional resonance. Just a few pages in and I was totally involved with the struggles of this clearly talented, hilariously confused person to be better in her own weird antic backassward ways. Full of indelible phrases (Panda Ambulance!) and painfully irrefutable observations about art, crappy jobs, friendship, wealth, sex, hygiene, booze, motherhood, and so many other things, this book is basically the inverse of those sappy self-discovery memoirs that inevitably arc into hard earned wisdom and self-discovery. This writer has the courage to stay in difficult places, and therefore be truer to life. I laughed and cringed and cared more and more. Thank you, Beth Lisick, it was and continues to be worth all the struggles." Monologue topics: voicemail, Felicity, funny books, Leaving the Atocha Station, Ben Lerner, beets, Gore Vidal. Welcome to episode #10 of Foreword Thinking - The Business and Motivational Book Review Podcast presented by HarperCollins Canada. Dan Ariely's first book is the now best-selling, Predictably Irrational - The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decision. We had this conversation a couple of months before the book came out and took the world by storm. The book is fascinating and the conversation is amazing. Did you know that we repeatedly and predictably make the wrong decisions in many aspects of our lives and that research could help change some of these patterns? As a behavioral economist, Dan Ariely studies how people actually act in the marketplace, as opposed to how they should or would perform if they were completely rational. His interests span a wide range of daily behaviors such as buying (or not), saving (or not), ordering food in restaurants, pain management, procrastination, dishonesty, and decision making under different emotional states. His experiments are consistently interesting, amusing, and informative, demonstrating profound ideas that fly in the face of common wisdom. Enjoy the conversation... It all took place at the CMA - Canadian Marketing Association - National Convention and Trade Show (full disclosure: I was the co-chair of the event and I sit on the board of directors). Beyond that, I talk about how Google has been tinkering with their search results, plus I have a couple of questions for the community about a PowerPoint issue I am trying to resolve. I also have a realization, that if anyone has a software/tech issue, why not call it in and see if the community can help you resolve it? On top of that, there are some great audio comments all about everything from Facebook Groups to kids, violence and the video game industry. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #96 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. There a little flub at the beginning of the recording. I hit the pause button and didn't unpause (it's an ugly story, and you don't want to hear about it). That being said, tons of great content with call-ins about how the show can evolve and a conversation around why Search and Search Engine Optimization is changing, and what you need to know about it. There's lots of other goodies as well. My energy was high, so the talking is fast. Enjoy the conversation... If you go to enough rock shows, you inevitably see some horrible bands -- tuneless, ear shattering, egotistical boobs that make you want to run screaming for the door. But for some reason, on some nights, you don't run screaming for the door. You sit there, grit your teeth and soak in the caterwaul and the bombast. Maybe there is a "no ins and outs policy," maybe you're trying to impress some friends, or maybe you're hoping that enough liquor will make it all better. We've all been there and we've all felt the pain. This episode's esteemed panelists share their rock and roll horror stories. Third Eye Blind, Psychefunkapus, The Hidden Hand, Sunn O, OM, and The Godwads take it on the chin in the debut episode of NEST OF VIPERS.
