Whether you're new to mountain biking or just haven't progressed as far as you would like, it's likely one of two things (maybe both) that are holding you back: your skills or your confidence. In this episode, I chat with Joanna Yates about how to develop both. Joanna is a mountain bike skills coach and guide in Sedona, Arizona. She's also a mountain bike instructor mentor, helping new mountain bike coaches get started. We touch on a bunch of topics in this interview including how to choose a mountain bike coach, the importance of regular skills practice, and changing the stories we tell ourselves.
The more acclimated you are to the heat, the better you can perform in the heat. Working to acclimate to the heat means you will have a lower heart rate when exercising or training in the heat, you'll feel less exhausted, and you'll also feel like your effort is less intense the more acclimated you are to it. WINNING! If you want to acclimate to the heat and not dread training in the heat, then give this episode a listen!

The Cycle Effect is a non-profit organization based in Colorado that focuses on providing mentorship through mountain biking to girls and non-binary youth. Their focus is to make mountain biking accessible to everyone through their programs, especially for youth who typically don't have access to the equipment and gear needed. I had the chance to sit down with the Founder and CEO, Brett Donelson, and Isidra Luna (AKA Isi or Izzy), the Summit County Manager. They helped add clarity to how and why they do what they do for our amazing cycling community - and it's all about creating a place where these young riders feel they belong. To learn more about The Cycle Effect, visit their website here as well as follow their YouTube here (they have some amazing videos showcasing their work). For many of us, the challenge of cycling is not only about getting faster and fitter, but also about our evolution and growth as a human being; being pushed outside of our comfort zone, and to achieve new levels of abilities through our on-bike endeavors. And while power meters, heart rate monitors, and social apps like Strava and Zwift allow us to measure our outputs, what often is not measured, is how we use (or don't use) the process to improve. Joanna Yates is a MTB Skills Coach out of Sedona Arizona, who is a living example of embracing the process and using the process, not the output, as a measure to growing towards our full potential. We hung out to talk MTB skills development, how to use the bike to become a better version of yourself, and the importance of stepping up to the challenges with a cool, calm, and collected energy. This week on Gin and Sin we discuss the horrific murder of Joanna Yates. Joanna was was a landscape architect from Hampshire, England, who went missing from the flat she shared with her partner, in a large house in Bristol, on 17 December 2010 after an evening out with colleagues.
According to Yuval Noah Harari, best-selling author of Homo Deus and Sapiens, it is story telling that sets the human race apart from other species. It’s our ability to believe in the stories we hear that enables us to form communities, believe money has value, and follow a chosen religion. So when today’s guest Joanna Yates was inspired to create Spark London, Britain’s first open mike story telling club, it’s no wonder that it continues to attract sell-out crowds ten years on. Q: What drew you into that first open mike story telling night? A: It was the humanity of it. It was like people in a bare setting, they just appeared from a door and sat on either a chair and a stool, and in front of a room full of people—they just talked about themselves. [1:52] Joanna came across the idea of a story telling club in LA, where she attended an event that left her completely gripped, and somehow determined to bring that feeling with her back to London and spread it. As she began running open mike story telling nights the format evolved and grew. The event started with people reading pre-written stories, and moved to a more spontaneous style before Spark London starting helping produce certain people’s stories as well. Now the events are recorded live and a handful of stories are put into a podcast. ”I know that people have stories to tell, and it’s often the people that will say ‘I definitely haven’t got any stories to tell,’ that you know even more that they have a story to tell.” [11:17] Spark London hosts an event once a month. Attendees get the chance to hear a wide array of stories and also gather some courage and step up to the mic themselves. Each event is themed, and all stories are asked to fit somehow into that theme. For instance, on the Spark London website the prompt will be given with a few examples, such as “Have you ever accidentally called your boss ‘Dad’?” Sometimes at the start of the show only one person is lined up to speak, but once one goes more always step up and get in line. One story easily spawns countless others. “If you want to find a story, one of the best ways to find a story is to hear a story.” [18:40] Many people say the event has been a crossroads for them—a major boost that comes after sharing something personal with a whole room full of strangers. There is a feeling of comradery that comes about from sharing and working with Spark London, guests are encouraged to mingle and talk after the event to connect. I’m looking forward to attending myself and hearing some of London’s hidden stories in an event that is sure to go on for years to come. It's been a rough couple of weeks - Ric was in Cornwall and I have Tonsillitis. It has taken over a week to get this episode up. We're just developing a psychological profile of Rob at this point; 90% of our episodes are putting the evidence together and realising the horrible truth. Anyway, we also discuss Conor McGregor, lying to your friends and family, who really killed Joanna Yates (more hinted around, you connect the dots), and never talking to the polis. Technically Episode 3, we're calling this Episode 2 (B), making it the basement flat to last week's beautiful duplex. And like a shitty basement flat, it's riddled with crack smoke and broken dreams. This week we talk about jacking it 42 times, harrowing tales of Labradors in bare knuckle fights, fat pole sliding, Wu Tang, UFC 220, Tom Hardy's Mix Tape, and the murder of Joanna Yates. Fun times.
In GBA 281 we get even better acquainted with Radcliffe. He talks about being in a coma, continuing battles with addiction, the double edged swords of being attractive and charming, storytelling, class, belief and so much more. We recontextualize his journey through addiction, prison, homelessness and public school and we talk about the pressures, ironies and positives that can come in telling audiences true stories of redemption. We talk about many dark things such as child sexual abuse, rape, violence but we talk about the light too. This conversation is both an update where we talk about things that have happened since Radcliffe was last on the show and an extension and development of the stories we have shared before. Off the back of a successful partnership in 2014, Spark hosted another night with charity Mind in Haringey on the theme of mental health. Research shows that there’s much more that can be done to understand how mental health is understood and experienced in different cultures. How does our culture shape what we see as mental health or ill health, what has your experience been? If you've been affected by the themes within this programme, there's always someone who can help. Please visit mind.org.uk for more information.
