In this episode, we shift our focus from GP IT Re-provisioning to another major change for practices: the upgrade from Docman 7 to the cloud-hosted Docman 10. We've previously discussed Docman's vital role in document management and the GP2GP system for records transfer. Docman is indispensable for handling the influx of results and letters we receive daily. However, like everything else, it's about to undergo an upgrade across every practice in Scotland. At our recent SNUG Members' day, Judith Milligan from National Services Scotland outlined how the initial practices were selected for the move to Docman 10 and highlighted the NSS GP IT website as a resource. Today, we hear from the One Advanced Healthcare team, who presented at the SNUG virtual members day. We'll hear from Greta Henderson, Programme Lead for Docman 10 migration; Dianne King, Head of Training and Education; John Galvin, Deployment Manager; and Paul Chenoweth, Senior Training Consultant. Paul demonstrates how Intellisense can streamline filing, using a hospital discharge letter as an example. Prepare for the transition over the next 2 years, as 900 practices in Scotland adopt Docman 10. Access to an e-learning portal and Familiarization environment will be provided shortly before a practice upgrades, but you can also visit the NSS GP IT site now (via a SWAN connection) to see a video demo of Docman 10. This is the second in a six-part series on media literacy. This episode intends to explain what the media - whether it's broadcast media like Radio Kerry, newspapers, or even people commenting on social media - can or cannot state during trials. John Galvin, secretary of the Kerry Law Society, explains how fundamental rights to a fair trial and to a good name impact on what can be said about a court case. This doesn't just apply to criminal trials but other types of cases. There are also implications for what can be said - whether it's on air, on print, or in social media - about a matter that's not before the courts. Under the constitution, people are entitled to the right to a good name which means you cannot defame them unless it’s been proven they've done wrong. Businesses in the IT sector expect to let go of more staff than they hire for the first time since 2020, according to the latest ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey. Hiring optimism in the tech sector has declined from +55% two years ago to -8% for Q1 2024. This is in response to slower-than-expected growth and preparation for continued business stagnation in the New Year. The ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey is based on responses from 420 employers across Ireland. It asks whether employers intend to hire additional workers or reduce the size of their workforce in the coming quarter, January to March. It is the most comprehensive, forward-looking employment survey of its kind in the world. The survey also revealed 90% of businesses in the IT sector are having difficulty finding candidates with the skills they need. This is up 11 percentage points year-over-year. A low supply of specialist skills drives this shortage: across all sectors, IT & data skills were hardest to find - especially in the IT sector - with 69% of tech companies struggling to source candidates with the IT & data competencies they require. "Ireland's tech sector has entered a period of contraction following a period of significant over-hiring," said John Galvin, Managing Director, ManpowerGroup Ireland. "Tech companies, especially multinational software companies, have had to respond to slower than expected growth and reducing global demand. Most of these redundancies have been mid-level business support roles like HR and customer experience, hired in anticipation of massive growth which did not materialise in 2023." The tech sector downturn is most pronounced in Dublin, where IT employers report a net employment outlook of -20 %, down from +53% two years ago. However, 88% of IT businesses in Dublin city report difficulty finding the skills they need in candidates, and 35% of employers report IT and data skills are the most difficult to find. Galvin adds: "We continue to see vacancies for specialist, high-skilled tech roles like cloud architects, cybersecurity specialists, developers and data engineers, where employers are still looking to fill vacancies despite the wider downturn. This talent shortage is being driven by the demand for specialist skills rising faster than the economy can supply, but we know those with more generalist skills are encountering a much tighter labour market. "Companies are also turning to more contracting and interim hiring strategies to compensate for permanent candidate shortages in the short term, but employers have to introduce and utilise upskilling programmes for tech candidates in the New Year if they plan to overcome this talent shortage" Other sectors remain in positive territory. The Communication Services and Transport, Logistics, and Automotive sectors report a Net Employment Outlook of +48%, with the fast-growing Healthcare & Life Sciences sector following at +40%. However, each of these sectors reports facing record skills gaps, making optimistic hiring intentions difficult to turn into filled vacancies. To tackle the ongoing talent shortage, ManpowerGroup Ireland advises businesses to re-evaluate how they approach job vacancies and focus more on skills-based hiring rather than solely on industry experience. Galvin explains: "Eight years ago, IT skills barely scraped the top ten most in-demand skills. In today's market, the number of candidates with eight years of experience in cutting-edge tech does not exist in sufficient quantities to meet demand - and the data shows that it is only getting worse year on year. The traditional approach of looking for ready-made candidates with a fixed level of industry experience is simply not a sustainable hiring practice any longer. "We know from our conversations with candidates that they want flexibility, good work-life balance, and meaningful professional development. Businesses should look to hire candidates who have potential - based on a holistic view of past...

The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1809 On this day, Thomas Jefferson (books about this person) wrote to his friend and favorite nurseryman, Bernhard McMahon. At the time, Jefferson was counting the days until he retired from the White House. From Jefferson's letters, it's clear that he was looking forward to spending more time in his garden. The previous July, Jefferson had written McMahon and confided: Early in the next year I shall ask [for] some cuttings of your gooseberries  and [I'll also] send a pretty copious list for...the best kinds of garden seeds and flowers.  I shall be at home early in March [and plan to] very much devote myself to my garden…  I have the tulips you sent to me in great perfection, also the hyacinths, tuberoses, amaryllis, and artichokes.   And so, when Jefferson wrote to McMahon on this day - a month before leaving office - he was following up with the list of plants he wanted at Monticello ("MontiCHELLo"). As you might imagine, Jefferson's letter reads the same as any written by an avid gardener in pursuit of new stock: Sir I have been daily expecting some of the large hiccory nuts from Roanoke…  but they [have] not yet arrived.    I must now ask [a] favor of you  to furnish me with the [items mentioned below] for the garden,  which will occupy much of my attention... at home.  …If you will be so good as to send them by the stage  which leaves Philadelphia on the 1st of March…  they will come in time for me to carry on to Monticello.  I salute you with esteem. An English-American born in Kent, he mastered his grandfather's nursery business in Ireland before immigrating to America with his mother at 18. After working for several nurseries in New England, including the property owned by Thomas Motley which would eventually become the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard, John went on to beautify Boston as the City's Forester. John's greatest legacy was transforming old circus grounds and a playground into the Boston Public Garden. After the Massachusetts Public Garden Act was passed in 1856, George Meacham was hired to design the park. But it was John Galvin, and his crew who installed the trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf. Outside of his work for the city, John opened the very first retail florist shop in Boston, making life much easier for him and his customers. Before John's flower shop, Bostonians had to order their roses and other cut flowers by mail. They would put their orders in little post boxes that John had placed in various stores around the city. It was a cumbersome process. John named his business John Galvin & Co., and the work became a family affair as John's wife and seven children helped the business prosper. Over time, the middle child, a son named Thomas, took over the business, and he became a successful gardener, landscape designer, and florist in his own right. John was a beloved member of many Boston social and charitable groups. He embraced his Irish heritage and loved dancing jigs and reels. One obituary noted that his favorite Irish song was Malony Don't Know that McCarthy is Dead, sung to the tune of the Irish Washerwoman. Two years before he died, at the age of 76, the April 6th, 1899 edition of the New England Florist shared a little story about John. They wrote, The veteran florist John Galvin, the father of Thomas W Galvin, had his pocket picked on the street the other day - March 31st, we believe. But [he] knew nothing about it until told by a friend whom [John] suspected of trying to spring an April Fool's on him. [That is,] until he found his pocketbook with $70 in cash missing. [But in a stroke of good fortune,] the thief, while being chased by the police, [dropped the pocketbook.] [John's ownership] was ascertained [after finding] his name marked [inside]. The moral is to get $70 in your pocketbook and then be sure your name is on it.   1944 On this day, Del Monte ran an ad supporting the quality of their canned and jarred fruit over homegrown.  Despite prior marketing in support of Victory Gardens, on this day Del Monte floated a pitch to consumers on this day during WWII that featured a woman holding a can of peaches saying, I learned the hard way all right! — and believe me, since I put up fruit of my own I appreciate Del Monte quality more than ever!   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Treasures of the Mexican Table by Pati Jinich This book came out late in 2021, and the subtitle is Classic Recipes, Local Secrets. John's love of nature is reflected in much of his writing. John wrote: Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty.   John also recognized that beauty and utility didn't always go hand in hand. He once observed, Remember that the most beautiful things in the world are the most useless; peacocks and lilies, for instance.   John's named his home and garden Brantwood. The name Brantwood is Norse; Brant means steep. Situated on a wooded highpoint overlooking a lake, today Brantwood is administered by a charitable trust. As with most gardens from time to time, John's own garden experienced times of neglect. By the end of the summer in 1879, John wrote, Looking over my kitchen garden yesterday, I found it [a] miserable mass of weeds gone to seed; the roses in the higher garden putrefied into brown sponges, feeling like dead snails; and the half-ripe strawberries all rotten at the stalks.   As for his legacy, there's one famous garden saying from John Ruskin that has remained popular through the years: Kind hearts are the garden, Kind thoughts are the roots, Kind words are the blossoms, Kind deeds are the fruit.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

In this episode of the podcast, Taylor (@mbgtaylor) and Bryan (@mbgbryan) sit down with a long time friend and fellow captain, John Galvin (@fishypantsmagoo).Capt. John Galvin is a Massachusetts native who has spent his life working around the water. Beginning in tackle shops and inshore charter boats on Cape Cod as a teenager and the head boats out of Point Judith, Rhode Island during college, John has made the ocean a center point of his life. Since graduating from Salve Regina University, he has put thousands of nautical miles under his feet with experience spanning from the Canadian Maritimes and New England down the east coast to Florida, the Bahamas, Mexico Caribbean and through he Panama Canal to Costa Rica. He has spent time either in the pit or at the helm of successful operations in both the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. After many successful seasons operating the "Mulberry Canyon" sportfishing operation on Cape Cod, he joined the world traveling "Jaruco" sportfishing program fishing from New England to Costa Rica, and all points in between. Currently he is based out of Nantucket, MA during the summer months and between Miami, FL and the Bahamas in the winters operating the 66-foot Viking "El Diablo".John is also a sought after speaker on the seminar circuit, and has written many articles for fishing publications such as On the Water Magazine, In the Bite, and the Big Game Journal. This conversation with John was like any other...full of laughs and good knowledge. We talk about his past fishing experiences, how he got into offshore fishing, and his current program on "El Diablo". We also ask John some questions about what he likes to run as a spread in the Northeast Canyons; specifically what kind of spread would he run if he only has $100 to spend on it!John also tells us about one of the scariest experiences he has every had offshore, and why you ALWAYS want to make sure you are wearing the appropriate footwear when fishing...You don't want to miss this one!Stay Tight,-The Sears BrothersSponsors, Information, and Links from this podcast episode:SponsorsMass Bay GuidesGuest InfoCapt.
