As renewable power grows, land use decisions will influence its environmental impact. --- Decarbonizing the electric grid will require a dramatic expansion of renewable energy by mid-century, and significantly more land dedicated to clean power. But where and how that buildout occurs will shape whether the environmental benefits of renewables are fully realized or come at a high cost to ecosystems, farmland, and communities. Grace Wu of the Spatial Climate Solutions Lab at UC Santa Barbara and Jonathan Thompson, research director at Harvard Forest, examine the tension between rapid renewable energy expansion and conscientious land use. Wu, who has co-authored recent reports on the environmental impacts of clean energy siting policies, explores strategies for minimizing impacts while ensuring energy remains reliable and affordable. Thompson, whose research quantifies the effects of land use on forest ecosystems, discusses the push-and-pull dynamic unfolding in Massachusetts, where solar development has resulted in real losses of forests and farmland, and where new siting models are emerging. The two also explore how incentives and regulations influence land use decisions, and how policy can reduce land impacts while supporting clean power development. Grace Wu is an assistant professor in the Environmental Studies program at the University of California Santa Barbara and leads the university’s Spatial Climate Solutions Lab. Jonathan Thompson is senior ecologist and research director at Harvard Forest. Clay Jenkinson interviews Jonathan Thompson, the author of books about the American West, including Sagebrush Empire: How a Remote Utah County Became the Battlefront of American Public Lands. Thompson has written much about the pushback of western ranchers, irrigators, mining interests, and chambers of commerce against federal regulation (and even federal ownership) of the public lands in the West. How should we balance the varied interests in the West: agriculture, mining, motorized recreation, backpack recreation, Native American interests, and America's deep addiction to carbon extraction? Who should be at the table? Clay asked Thompson to look at the West from 38,000 feet and offer his predictions of its future in the second half of the 21st century. Will President Trump achieve his goal of privatizing whole swaths of the public domain?

This episode is an interview with Dan Wirth and Jonathan Thompson about the use and practical application of Blood Flow Restriction technology, and specifically the value of the B-Strong system. Dan is currently the Director of Olympic sports performance at the University of Tennessee. He has been in the world of human performance for 35+ years as both a team and organization strength and conditioning coach, and also as an entrepreneur. Dan left the University of Arizona in 2000 where he had served as Lead S+C for ten years to build his performance facility Sierra Fitness Performance Training in Tucson. He was introduced to Blood Flow Restriction training with early technologies and experimental applications during his career. He then became a big advocate of the modality and uses it regularly in daily training. Dan further recommended we bring S+C Coach Jonathan Thompson, a former intern of Dan's, on the show. Jonathan is using BFR regularly with his basketball players at Lipscomb University where he has been since 2022. In this session, we try to bring the wisdom and experience of Dan with the exuberance and application of Jonathan and another colleague together to paint a picture of the value of this training modality. Earlier this year, the Interior Department issued a draft of a new Public Lands Rule designed to “guide the balanced management of public lands,” and help those lands “resist and recover from drought, wildfire, and other disturbances.” Among other things, the rule clarifies that conservation is on a par with other uses of federal lands, such as grazing, oil and gas drilling and mining. The draft rule is open for public comments until June 20. Jonathan Thompson, contributing editor at High Country News, joins us to explain what's in the draft, and how it might change our public lands.

The family of Gabby Petito is suing the Moab Police Department for $50 million, claiming officers' negligence led to Petito's death. In a statement, Moab City says “it is clear that Moab City Police Department officers are not responsible Petito's eventual murder” and that they will "ardently defend against the lawsuit." And increased demand for materials used in electric vehicles — and war in Europe possibly disrupting uranium supplies — means southeastern Utah could see more mining. We speak with Jonathan Thompson of High Country News about the potential mining boom in our region. Plus, the Moab Sun tells us "What Happened at the Meeting." Also, the Weekly News Reel! Sophia Fisher of The Times-Independent discusses plans for land after the completion of the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project, OHV testing in Moab, dark-sky compliance in Grand County and the Moab Museum's effort to help residents preserve old family photos. Time stamps: 00:43- Introducing Jonathan Thompson, the "go-to" Digital Marketing Guru for Agencies, Direct Dealerships and Groups trying to modernize their customer services;01:47- Going back to the beginnings- growing up in South Georgia as a military brat (his father was in the air force) and trying to find things to keep him busy and away from trouble;04:19- Getting in trouble and starting to make his own decisions about the people and the environment he was hanging around;08:00- First steps into adult life- flunking the first year of college because of low attendance and getting his first job in a car dealership;12:07- Going back to college, winning back his scholarship and starting a new job at a call center (Fresh Beginnings aka Elead CRM);13:58- Realizing sales is his future;19:35- Starting to work for Force Marketing after attending a VA conference and trying to pitch them to build a call center in their company;24:10- Deciding to start his own company right when Covid started;27:01- Growing his company with consideration to his clients and employees;31:00- How digital marketing (social media, websites etc) combined with traditional marketing (radio, mail, billboards etc) complete a customer's experience;38:10- The importance of positivity and gratitude;42:39- Things that get JT excited about the future- changing people's perception about dealerships;45:36- Parting words. Quotes “Growing up, it was different down in South Georgia, for me specifically. I'm a military brat, my dad was in the Air Force, he picked up a lovely lady from Taiwan (...) I was always getting in trouble because I felt like I just didn't have enough to do and there was a time where they wanted to put me in gifted classes, and you know, I went through them, and it was all just because I kept on disturbing the class, so like, what's wrong with this guy? He keeps getting A's but he keeps getting in trouble.” “Throughout all my times of trouble, I had a lot of learning. And a lot of what I learned was, I needed to look at myself and stop counting on my parents to try to put me somewhere and make something of me. (...) I can't just rely or try to depend on my parents or my environment to stimulate me.” “You know, growing up, comparing yourself?! Yeah, you look at everybody else…I remember, I would watch some of my peers, especially in middle school going into high school, they would be wearing Polos' and Tommy Hilfigers' and I was like, “I want some Polos and Tommy Hilfigers'!” And I remember I used to ask my mom (...) and she was like, are you kidding me, they're 50 dollars, 60 dollars shirts that you're just going to tear up. But she got me three. I remember it was a green one, a white one and a red one. And boy did I rotate those shirts off!” “To keep your Hope scholarship you have to have good attendance. Well, even though I had great grades, I actually ended up flunking out my first year because of attendance. And so they took my Hope scholarship away and I was just distraught. (...) So I found a job in the newspaper, 500 dollars a week, selling cars in a Honda dealership (...) that's how I started in the car business, I went there and I didn't even know I had a knack for sales.” “He does one of the largest mail deals, still to this day that I've ever done. Sixty-nine thousand dollars, I'll never forget it. (...)and I quickly realized at the time, my company doesn't treat me right. (...) I've been putting up sixty- seventy thousand a month with no cut plan.” “I wanted them to remember JT, not necessarily Force Marketing. I wanted them to remember the great hard work that I put in and I didn't want to offer them products that may or may not make an impact.” “If you provide remarkable products and services you truly know they're remarkable, they will just generate that gravity to leads and opportunities. It will just happen. If you treat your employers right, if you treat your customers right, it is like gravity.” “Dealers calling vendors, vendors and dealers calling leads, leads, you know? These are people! Remember that they are people and treat them as such. Converse with them. Be funny. Don't just try to get into their wallet, 'cause that is one of the fastest ways to break a relationship.” “It took me years of practice, but if you start to understand that your thoughts make your feelings, which creates your behaviors… you gotta start at the beginning and think about how can I change my thoughts, how can I wake up every single day and appreciate and have gratitude for what I have.” __________________________ Get in contact with JT: Linkedin AMG Group: WebsiteLinkedinFacebookYoutube ______________________________ Mentions: Polo- first full line of menswear created by Ralph LaurenTommy Hilfiger - an American premium clothing brand, manufacturing apparel, footwear, accessories, fragrances and home furnishings.Honda- a Japanese public multinational conglomerate manufacturer of automobiles, motorcycles, and power equipment.Mitsubishi- a group of autonomous Japanese multinational companies in a variety of industries, including the automotive industry.Kia- a South Korean multinational automobile manufacturer.Hope scholarshipElead CRM- a cloud-based customer relationship management solution created for automotive retailers by automotive industry experts.Force Marketing- leading providers of technology-enabled, data-driven multi-channel marketing services for automotive clients. _________________________ Follow Jake: WebsiteInstagramLinkedInTwitter ______________________________

I had the pleasure of talking to Jonathan Thompson, who you might know from his fantastic YouTube channel "Scanline City". The channel currently revolved around arcade sticks and I think it is an excellent resource for those who love to play and collect sticks. Jonathan is very active in other areas of retro gaming as well, you may have seen his project to create high quality metal/perspex cases for classic arcade boards like the Mortal Kombat series or his efforts to build an authentic recreation of the classic "MAS" American arcade stick. In another life Jonathan is a award winning film maker, working on his own short and feature length movies and documentaries. This certainly goes a long way to explaining the insanely high production value of his Scanline City videos. I was fascinated by his story. He seems to do A LOT of things and does them really well, with thought and craftsmanship. His arcade stick videos, the MK arcade boards or the new MAS recreation stick, all of them are really quality products which demonstrate he is really paying attention. How the hell does this guy find the time, effort and creativity to do all of this along with being creative head for his own video production company? We talk about his childhood and how this led him to the path he is on today. I enjoyed talking to Jonathan and connecting over our roles running creative organizations. In my day job I manage a group of comedians, trying to forward their careers and produce great projects together. After years of work, I am in a place to take some perspective on the big picture and provide creative and business direction. It sounds like Jonathan is in a similar place with his production company and I enjoyed talking to him about it. 00:00 Start 04:50 How do you manage the work / hobby balance? 10:11 The YouTube algorithm controls us all 17:22 What are your first memories of video games? 20:37 Did you grow up in a creative family? 41:14 Starting the Scanline City channel 50:27 Creating arcade PCB covers 59:50 MAS arcade sticks 01:18:50 Modding sticks 01:21:15 His impressive arcade stick collection Follow Scanline City on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ScanlineCity You might like some of the other things I do too Comedy Guy Podcast: https://anchor.fm/comedyguy Zez Retro Podcast: https://anchor.fm/zezretro Twitter: https://twitter.com/louiszezeran Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/louiszezeran Zez Retro on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ZezRetro Retro Shmups on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/louiszezeran

In today's episode we are returning to the new T&T Clark Handbook of Analytic Theology. I'm once again joined by Jonathan Thompson to discuss my chapter in the handbook, called Classical Theism. In today's episode, we discuss the ever valid modal collapse argument against divine simplicity. Conversations over this argument have gotten heated online, and many confusions abound. So Jonathan and I clarify what the argument actually says, and consider several objections to the argument. You had been asking for the return of Objection Time, and today we deliver. Toxic sludge from the Gold King Mine in Colorado poured into the Animas and San Juan rivers on Aug. 5, 2015. It created an environmental disaster for hundreds of miles downstream, including parts of the Navajo Nation. The bright orange plume from the original spill is gone, but legal fights and restoration projects continue. And […]

In today's episode we are digging deeper into the new T&T Clark Handbook of Analytic Theology. I'm joined by Jonathan Thompson to discuss my chapter in the handbook. I wrote the chapter called “Classical Theism.” In today's episode we offer a systematic articulation of the classical conception of God, and clarify common confusions about classical understandings of the divine attributes. We consider different complications that arise when constructing a classical model of God. Then we examine some problems for classical theism from the doctrine of creation out of nothing. Today on the show, we have Jonathan Thompson. Serving in the military for over a decade, Jonathan takes us through his wealth of real-world experience. Whether it was helping out during a cholera outbreak or delivering newborns in remote villages, he shares his incredible experience as a Special Forces medic serving not only his fellow soldiers but also the community at large. Through his story of starting medical school at 40, we learn the importance of grit and not giving up on our dreams and aspirations.
Since riding in a bike-a-thon at 8 years old to his current status of unofficial “Mayor of Cape Cod”, Jonathan Thompson has been a force in his community. From performing in a local R&B group as a teen to creating the popular social media show “JT Chronicles”, he has captured the hearts of Cape Cod residents and beyond. In the early 90's, after his performing career came to an end, Thompson decided to begin a new chapter and teamed up with lifelong friend, Tim Lus (who he met on that bike-a-thon ride as a kid) as well as others and began a journey which has provided entertainment in several forms to the community that he loves for over 25 years. Under the name Incognito Entertainment which was later changed to Ayboi Entertainment, the group produced hundreds of events including dances, concerts, tournaments and parties. Thompson and Lus created “The Real…” a local video show which included interviews and performances by major recording artists and other types of performers. “The Real…” brand was later expanded to include a radio show (The Real… Radio) and used a format similar to the video show.Over the next several years, JT continued to be involved in the production and promotion of events and services of all types including concerts, youth dances, theme parties, fundraisers, youth career days, tournaments, blood drives, event hosting and more. Two years ago, on the heels of his growing popularity and infectious personality, Thompson posted a video documenting an inconveniencing knee injury, the day of doctor's visits and the comedy of errors that followed. The single video created a refreshing take on his everyday life and JT's Chronicles was born. In the ensuing months he began creating a phenomenon that has grown to over 30,000 followers across multiple social media platforms. The daily series of video blogs include the “Morning Bus Ride with Bob”, many cameo appearances from members of the community (as well as an occasional celebrity), trivia, raffles and an overall message of positivity, usually with a twist of humor. Thompson opens almost every video entry with a “Good morning…. you are watching the Chronicles” and ends with an “I Love you”.He is now known as the go-to guy when the community needs a leader at a vigil or an MC for an event. When there are plans to hold a fundraiser, it's JT they always want (and need) involved. Recently, facing stiff competition and a 3 month long voting process he was named “Mayor of cape Cod” at the Art Westfall Foundation's Bartenders Ball.Whether it is a word of encouragement, a rally for prayers and support for local families experiencing hard times, promotion of local businesses or just to make his followers laugh, JT Chronicles is a uniquely crafted outlet by a man who has his finger on the pulse of the people. His followers comment frequently about how JT Chronicles helps them begin their day or makes them feel empowered. His live videos create a buzz and a refreshing way to break up the monotony of the work day for many. Overall, JTC provides a look into the life of a dedicated family man and friend who truly cares about his community and all people.
