Did you know that almost all athletic shoes on the market have been designed, researched and tested on men? When Lindsay Housman discovered this, she and her husband, founded Hettas, a company creating running shoes optimized for women.  Today, Lindsay joins the podcast to share why becoming a disruptor in this space is so important to her. We discuss:  Why women are left out of research for shoes (and so many other things) Why women's feet are fundamentally different than men How wearing shoes designed for men impacts women's health.   How Hettas came to be and why she started this company much earlier than she thought.  Why it's important to her to never settle for the status quo Founding, self-funding and running this company while currently working another full time job What she hopes to accomplish with Hettas and exactly how their shoes are different Why she believes women would be in sports longer if they had proper athletic shoes.  How women are treated so differently when it comes to raising venture capital.  Follow Hettas on Instagram here! PARKER is a mother, wife, Ironman, professional photographer/director and New York Times Bestselling author who shoots both personal projects and commercial work for her clients. Her STRONG IS THE NEW PRETTY book led to collaborations with brands such as Disney, Athleta, Kellogg's, and NBC. It has also inspired Kate to launch a philanthropic arm of SITNP, partnering with organizations such as Girls on the Run, Girl Up, The Arthur Blank Family Foundation, Disney, Glam4Good, and The Bully Project by investing in childrens' health and education. Kate is also the author of Strong is the New Pretty: The Guided Journal, The Heart of a Boy Play Like A Girl and Force of Nature About 'Force of Nature' I first picked up a camera not long after my oldest daughter was born, eighteen years ago.  I felt as if something clicked in me (almost literally).  I loved making images and sharing stories of what it was like to be young, confident and free.  I found my calling and means of expression in celebrating kids, especially girls, authentically.  My first book, Strong is the New Pretty, started as a project to encourage my own two girls to know that they are enough just as they are and that being who they are is enough.  I've been photographing with that in mind ever since.  My hobby soon turned into a passion and then into a career.  Yes, it took me until I was in my thirties to find my “thing”, but I am so grateful.  This is my fifth book that celebrates the voices and stories of my subjects alongside images of them being themselves. I love helping to amplify their stories, told in their own words. It's the best part of what I do, and it is how I use my voice.   Make sure to check out the Dtalkspodcast.com website! Do you believe that sports can instill confidence, strength, and self-esteem in girls at a young age and that these same attributes can be used on and off the field? Kate T Parker is a mother, wife, professional photographer and New York Times bestselling author of The Heart of a Boy and Strong is the New Pretty; she's an ironman and former collegiate soccer player who has made a living capturing the joy, confidence, focus, and camaraderie that comes from girls playing sports. Her photographs have been praised by Nicole Kidman, Drew Barrymore, David Beckham, and the Spice Girls. A powerful collection of color and black-and-white photographs, her newest book PLAY LIKE A GIRL captures girls just learning to kick the ball alongside players from the 2019 Women’s World Cup championship team such as Megan Rapinoe, Carly Lloyd, and Jessica McDonald. A celebration of the tenacious spirit of female soccer players of all ages, it reveals how sports, and soccer in particular, challenge girls and women to become their best selves, allowing them to test their limits, find power in friendship, appreciate their body’s strength, and learn how to pick themselves up when they’ve been knocked down.  Kate T. Parker, the Early Years Kate has played soccer ever since her early years growing up in New Jersey.  She continued playing soccer on the collegiate level for Wake Forest University in North Carolina.  After leaving college, she worked at CNN and then crossed over into advertising, which Kate believes helped her to "make something compelling on the screen." After getting married and having kids, Kate decided to use this skill to take pictures of her kids.  The Important Role of Confidence and Empowerment in Young Children As a mom, Kate believes that children should have confidence and self-esteem.  She wants this for her kids and thinks these are qualities all kids should have. Kate wants kids to know who they are should be celebrated and embraced.  Kate found confidence and empowerment while playing soccer.  She remembers being called "loud," "bossy," and “aggressive," all characteristics that made her a good soccer player.  Her coaches encouraged this behavior, and it is these qualities that enabled Kate to pursue a successful career as a photographer.  Kate believes it's okay for girls to voice their opinion, get dirty, or even angry at times.  Kate believes that it is "more important what you do and who you are than what you look like."  Kate thinks that social media does not portray “girls actively doing things.”  Her book shows girls and women moving and taking action. The book captures every expression and emotion the girls go through on and off the field, and they have the chance to tell their own story.  “Sometimes their words are funny, but they can also be silly, thoughtful and smart,” according to Kate. Soccer and Everyday Life Kate believes you can learn life’s lessons on the soccer field.  “In soccer, you cannot hang your head; you must keep looking forward regardless of what has happened in the past. You must keep moving.  Kate believes it's the same in real life, “if you mess up in life, don't hang your head, if you do that, you will miss the next play or the next opportunity.” Kate believes that “all girls should find something that they are passionate about; it doesn't have to be soccer or any particular sport.  It could be music or even art, find something you are passionate about, and then your sense of self-worth will come from that passion instead of from any outside forces that are trying to tear you down.” The importance of role models Kate believes that all girls should have role models in their lives.  The 2019 Women’s World Cup championship team with women such as Megan Rapinoe, Carly Lloyd, and Jessica McDonald, are role models to young girls and women.  Young girls need to see women who look like them to achieve success; it improves their self-worth. Kate T. Parker – Charity Work Kate believes that anyone with a platform should use it for the benefit of others.  Her charities of choice include the Boys & Girls Club of America, the Bully Project, and the Girls on the Run.

At age 4, Sassy Harvey's son was told that if he dances, he must be a girl. Or gay.  Not surprisingly, he quit dance class soon after that. It's 2019. Girls, we know can become astronauts and scientists and ministers and presidents. But boys who dance are STILL routinely perceived as gay and effeminate. In fact, according to a recent study of male ballet dancers: 93% of boys involved in ballet report "teasing and name calling" 68% experience "verbal or physical harassment" 11% were victims of physical harm - at the hands of people who targeted them because they study dance Shortly after her son quit formal dance classes, Sassy launched MY BOY CAN, an organization that would like to see a social shift in attitudes towards boys and challenges the constraints placed on boys. Often, Sassy says, "when a boy expresses interest that in things that are perceived as 'for girls,' they are told they shouldn't or can't." MY BOY CAN's first campaign was #MyBoyCanDance. Sassy reached out to dance studios and others in Portsmouth, England (her home base) and encouraged people to share photos of boys and men dancing, with the hashtag #MyBoyCanDance. Thanks to the power of the Internet, "it went crazy," Sassy said. "It's now worldwide." Of course, there's much work yet to be done. But as Sassy explains, "It all starts with us stopping the 'My boy won’t, can’t, shouldn’t because he is a boy' and starting instead to say, 'My Boy Can.'" Top L: Sassy Harvey. Top R: Janet Allison. Bottom: Jennifer Fink In this episode, Jen, Janet & Sassy discuss: The pressure boys face to conform to gender stereotypes How parents can support boys (and each other) as they challenge stereotypes The power of community (working together, parents of boys have more power than we do individually) How boy parents can create societal change How to help boys reframe public perceptions of dance How dance instructors and studios can create boy-friendly dance classes The importance (and value) of empowering boys to pursue their interests What to do if your boy's dad is the one discouraging dance (or any other activity) Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: My Boy Can -- Sassy's Facebook community Boys Can Dance Too -- Building Boys post Tight, Tutus & "Relentless" Teasing: Inside Ballet's Bullying Epidemic -- excellent HuffPo article Danseur -- documentary film (mentioned at about 19:20) about male dancers The Heart of a Boy: Celebrating the Strength and Spirit of Boyhood, by Kate T. "It's not a girl message, and it's not a boy message. It's a human message. It's about celebrating who you are, whatever you are." Kate T. Parker is the photographer and author behind the best-selling books Strong is the New Pretty and The Heart of a Boy. Her message for children is profoundly simple: You, just as you are, are worthy. You don't need to change who you are. Kids should feel strong and empowered being whoever they are. They should be accepted for staying true to themselves, whatever that looks like. Kate, a mom of two girls (Ella, 14, and Alice, 10) in Atlanta, GA, had a revelation a few years ago while taking photos of her kids. The photos weren't stereotypically "pretty" and posed, and the girls weren't sitting, smiling, wearing matching bows and dresses. They were messy. They were loud. They silly. And Kate wanted to make sure they always embraced that spirit. On this episode, Kate talks about the failure and rejection she experienced on the way to viral success, and talks about the moments when she knew the Strong is the New Pretty movement was making an impact. (They involve a Tweet from Emma Watson, and a DM exchange with David Beckham.) Kate, who is also a multiple-time triathlete and Ironman, opens up about what it's like when your middle school-aged daughter is dealing with bullying or mean girls, and talks about what she's doing to raise strong, confident children. Dana talks about the healing power of not being so hard on yourself and the joy of receiving a positive message at the right time while Jessica drinks her overachieving water.  Jessica loses her mind over people tapping and shaking their foot in public or filming something where cameras were prohibited and how she passive aggressively addressed that at a Paula Cole concert. Dana and Jessica continue to slip British vernacular into their everyday speech and their favorite word seems to be bloody.  Water fountains, yay or nay?  The ladies have strong opinions on this subject.  Don't even think about not putting your cart back in a parking lot or Dana will unleash the Kraken on you. A new "How To" corner is introduced as they discuss gracefully accepting compliments and not being scared to ask for or accept help when needed.  The ladies discuss how sometimes we can become numb to tragedy but sob at joyous moments.  We learn that you should never give Dana or Jessica your Tupperware to take home leftovers as you never see it again.  Raves include photographer Kate T. For generations, boys have been taught to be stoic and unemotional—and traits that do not fit in that box should be suppressed. It's more important than ever to redefine our expectations of them—and nurture all the attributes that make them who they are: the sensitive and the strong, the creative and the silly, the kind and the curious. THE HEART OF A BOY: Celebrating the Strength and Spirit of Boyhood by Kate T. Parker seeks to positively redefine masculinity at a moment when the country is grappling with how to raise boys to become good people. Parker's 2017 blockbuster bestseller Strong Is the New Pretty struck a chord throughout the nation and beyond. Now, in this stunning new collection, Parker turns her lens to boys. Because when given permission to be themselves, boys will not only grow up to be the truest version of themselves but will grow up to be men who will support and respect girls and women. We were lucky enough to have Kate join us again for this edition of The Fit Mess.

Episode's Key Points: It's January, and diet culture is EVERYWHERE! I worry a lot about the messages my kids are getting from these commercials and programs... Anna Lutz joins us today to talk about protecting our children from all the diet culture out there!! There's SO much of raising children that we don't have any control over. There's only so much we can do to protect our kids from so many things, from diet culture to bullying. Instead of trying to control everything around your kid, focus on creating a foundation for your child to come back to when they're confronted with diet culture. Remember, we can do all the "right things," but their genetics and personality can also play a role in how susceptible they are to diet culture. We can't change the way the culture perceives our kids' bodies, but what we CAN do is support our kids in their home and give them a safe haven no matter what goes on outside. Do what you can to talk positively about ALL bodies and talk neutrally about food. Model food and body peace the best you can! Try to have consistent family meals where you can connect and communicate with your kids, and where you can model how to handle food in a neutral way. Research shows that this helps them to be resilient! If your kids encounter fatphobia and tell you about it, start asking questions! Make them think about it, and start a conversation, rather than just trying to correct it. Help them to critically think!! Remember, you're raising the next generation! Who knows, maybe we're making the first group of kids who don't believe in weight bias and diet culture. Show Notes: Julie Dillon RD blog Link to subscribe to the weekly FREE Food Peace™ Newsletter. Strong is the New Pretty is the perfect mantra for all of us!  It also happens to be the title of Kate’s new book that features girls in their natural habitats doing things they love that are silly, loud, messy, fearless, independent, confident and fierce.  Kate T Parker and her photography have taken this notion and put it into art form…a tangible way for us to look at and feel the gamut of emotions from playfulness and outright fun to a sense of pride and creativity.  I would recommend this book for women of any age and would definitely use it to gift towards a graduating Senior or just a girlfriend who might be having a hard time in their life to remind them of their strength and power.  This episode deep dives into how Kate got into photography in the first place to the culmination of this incredible book.  You’re gonna love today’s episode!

Kate T Parker is known for her viral photos of strong girls just being themselves, which is now compiled into a book, Strong is the New Pretty. This beautiful book celebrates girls for who they are, not their appearance or shape. Growing up Kate was always encouraged to be herself -- messy hair, muddy knees, and all! As a mom herself, she passes this empowering mindset on to who kids and she challenges the cultural labeling of what girls “should” be in order to be a girl. In this podcast we discussed how she got into photography (hint: passion, passion, passion). We touch on the real benefits of exercise - like feeling good, not weighing less. We address why it can be so darn hard just posing in the picture when you struggle with body kindness -- and how to stop erasing yourself from your life. Then we get into the theme behind the images in the book, which is organized by positive character traits, not appearance-focused “beauty” requirements. One sample quote: Hayley, age 10 “I think girls should focus way more on who they are inside and way less on what they look like outside. I found a lot of strength in just not caring - lake water hair? Don’t care!” Tune in and don’t miss Kate’s video on her website: https://katetparker.com/ === About Kate Kate T Parker is the author of Strong Is The New Pretty. Kate T. Parker has taken her skill and creativity and blended it to help reshape and expand our culture’s concept of female beauty by empowering girls to believe that real beauty and strength lies in being 100% genuine. Kate’s book, “Strong is the New Pretty,” is a collection of 175 photographs that explore and celebrate beauty based on authenticity. As a mother of daughters herself, this topic is deeply personal for Kate, and as you’ll soon discover, her passion for supporting and empowering girls is an important message... one that all too many brush aside. Alongside the launch of her book, Kate has extended her philanthropic efforts to partner with organizations like Girls on the Run and The Bully Project, investing in girls’ health and education and has also collaborated with brands like Athleta, Kellogg’s and Oxygen. Whether you are a parent of girls or know one this episode is for you. If we want to live in a world where our girls get to play an active role in shaping the future, then we’ve got to begin the work of empowering them now.  And Kate’s here to tell us what we can do to join that team.
