Kate Parker, author of Force of Nature, joins us to discuss how to cultivate teen activism and empower them to raise their voices about vital issues. We explore the impact of authenticity in photography, the importance of encouraging teens to speak out, and practical tips for capturing meaningful moments with your camera. If you've enjoyed Talking to Teens, we'd love if you could leave us a five-star rating, and if you have time, a review! Full Show NotesIn today's digital age, teenagers are constantly bombarded with idealized images and messages on social media. Often, these images are meticulously curated and edited, setting unrealistic standards for beauty and success. For parents, this raises a crucial question: how can we help our teens rise above these false ideals and find their authentic voices? This week, we're speaking with Kate Parker, a renowned photographer and author of several influential photo collections, including Strong is the New Pretty and her latest, Force of Nature. Kate's work focuses on capturing the real, raw moments that highlight the true strength and beauty of young girls. By putting forward authentic and unpolished images, Kate encourages both teens and adults to embrace their genuine selves and to celebrate their unique voices. In our discussion, Kate shares the insightful journey behind her first book, inspired by her desire to present her daughters in a true and unfiltered light. The project started with personal portraits but grew into a celebrated movement as her authentic representations resonated globally. Kate's book, Strong is the New Pretty, has been translated into multiple languages, proving that the message of unyielding authenticity transcends cultural boundaries.Fostering Teen ActivismOne key theme in Kate's latest book, Force of Nature, is empowering teens to raise their voices and advocate for change in their communities. Divided into sections—Find Your Voice, Use Your Voice, Sustain Your Voice, and Amplify Your Voice—the book showcases young girls who have taken impactful actions, from writing op-eds to suing the government, to advocate for causes they believe in.Kate underscores the importance of parents actively encouraging their children to speak out. When kids come to us with complaints or concerns, we should nudge them toward advocacy by asking how they might change things and offering our support. Parents can play a crucial role in providing the initial push that helps teens realize their potential for making a difference.Capturing Real MomentsKate's photography captures the essence of real experiences, whether it's a girl fully immersed in her sport or kids engaging in community advocacy. To achieve this, she uses techniques that facilitate authentic expressions, like giving kids fun tasks or making them laugh naturally during a shoot. This approach not only makes for compelling images but also reinforces the idea that genuine, unfiltered moments are the most beautiful.Speaking on giving advice for at-home photography, Kate recommends avoiding posed and forced smiles. Instead, she suggests crafting moments that elicit genuine joy and interactions. She also shares technical tips, such as shooting during the golden hour or using natural light from windows, to elevate the quality of photos.Encouraging Passion and InclusivityThroughout the episode, Kate offers insights into how diverse backgrounds and experiences contribute to the rich tapestry of voices showcased in her books. Stories of girls who faced challenges—whether due to disabilities, societal norms, or personal adversities—highlight the resilience and ingenuity required to advocate for change. For parents, this serves as a potent reminder to foster an inclusive environment where every child feels valued and capable of making a difference. In the Episode…Our conversation with Kate Parker dives deep into multiple aspects of raising confident, outspoken teens. Kate Parker is a mother, wife, former NCAA D1 athlete, Ironman, TEDx speaker, professional photographer and New York Times bestselling author whose first book “Strong is the New Pretty” garnered support from the Spice Girls, David Beckham, Drew Barrymore, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman and Emma Watson. Her work has been featured in several major magazines and her clients include REI, Verizon, Athleta and American Express. Growing up, she was known for being loud, driven and perfectionistic which might be associated with “being strong” but typically not “pretty.” Like many female athletes, as she became more competitive in her sport, she started emphasizing being skinnier. However, a coach helped her reframe her body image and in turn her internal view of strength and beauty. As a mother and photographer, she uses her critical eye to point out perception vs reality while capturing powerful emotions to help us realize that exuberance needs no apology. In her newest book, “Force of Nature” she shows us why “too much” is actually the right amount. @katetparker, katetparker.com

By chance, Kate and her friends attended a Sea Shepherd screening of Cowspiracy. It turned out to be a life changing experience, as Kate changed her diet immediately and signed up to be a Sea Shepherd volunteer. She has been involved in Operation Milagro, a campaign to save the most endangered marine mammal in the world – the vaquita marina porpoise, as well as a clean up of illegal fishing equipment from the Cocos Islands. Having screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival and making its way to Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, Katie Boland reminds us that 'We're All in This Together' as she writes, directs and stars in this heartfelt film about mental health. Inspired by the novel of the same title by fellow Canadian author, Amy Jones, 'We're All in This Together' follows the misadventures of the the Parker family, who's mother Kate somehow survives going over a waterfall in a barrel (yes, that was taken straight from the novel). Boland had enjoyed the novel so much and once realizing that her and Ms. Jones shared the same literary agent, decided to contact the author in order to adapt her novel into a full length feature film, of which Boland plays twin sisters Finn and Nicki. We also spoke with Boland about her mother, a retired professional photographer who was an executive producer of the film, her father Kevin, who has an incredible affinity for Kentucky Fried Chicken and her bother Michael, who composed the music with his writing partner for 'We're All in This Together.' Official Synopsis: Written, directed by and starring Katie Boland as twins, 'We're All In This Together' focuses on the Parker family, who has had their fair share of complications. When matriarch Kate Parker miraculously survives plummeting over a waterfall in a barrel—a feat captured on a video that goes viral—suddenly the dysfunctional Parkers have to do something they never thought possible: act like a real family. Dealing with themes of trauma, mental illness and unexpected redemption, We're All In This Together is a never-before-seen story with a tour de force performance with Boland at the heart of the film. Kate Parker is based in Melbourne and is a volunteer at the global environmental organisation Sea Shepherd. She is a divemaster, and is also is the co-founder of the not for profit Daughters of The Deep, which helps underprivileged women gain access to education and marine conservation work. I reached out to Kate, who I had met briefly in Australia, to know more about what Sea Sheppard was doing. I had read an article on the Chinese Fishing Fleet horrific squid fishery practices off the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos are a UNESCO world heritage site that inspired 19th-century naturalist Charles Darwin and is home to some of the world's most endangered species, from giant tortoises to hammerhead sharks. Kate explained her work, what Sea Shepherd does, how we can help; we talked about some of the complications of activism; it was an entertaining talk. Thanks so much, Kate! Kate Parker is well known for her ocean activism with Sea Shepherd and other organisations. In this episode, we talk about the real problems that the planet is facing and it is not what you would expect. Kate took to a life of activism after watching the Cowspiracy documentary which highlighted the devastating effects that agriculture and commercial fishing have on the environment. She decided to protect the oceans because various processes that take place are responsible for the majority of the oxygen we breathe: meaning no fish = no humans. We delve deep into the psychology that leads to the destruction of a planet based upon the famous quote by Gus Speth, who is an American environmental lawyer, and advocate, he's the former dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and the former Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, he stated: “I used to think that top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change. I thought that thirty years of good science could address these problems. I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy, and to deal with these we need a cultural and spiritual transformation. And we scientists don't know how to do that.” We discuss some of the mind-blowing statistics from a variety of documentaries including Cowspiracy, Seaspiracy, and Sea of Shadows. Here are some of the statistics: -Whales fertilize plankton which is responsible for 85% of the world's oxygen. -Sharks kill 12 people a year/humans kill 11K sharks per hour. -Livestock and their byproducts contribute to 51% of greenhouse gases. -All transportation exhaust emissions are only 13% of greenhouse house gases. -Producing one hamburger uses the same amount of water as 2 months of showers. -There isn't enough land on the planet for people to eat meat in the same way that countries such as the UK and the USA do. -Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction. -At the current trajectory it is estimated that there will be no fish in the oceans by 2048. -A person who follows a vegan diet produces the equivalent of 50% less carbon dioxide, uses 1/11th oil, 1/13th water, and 1/18th land compared to a meat-lover for their food. -Each day, a person who eats a vegan diet saves 5000 litres of water, 20 kilos of grain, 9 metres of forested land, 20 lbs CO2 equivalent, and one animal's life. So much of what we see on social media is fake and makes people feel inferior. It is so important to have images in circulation that deliver a different narrative. Today's guest is Kate Parker, New York Times bestselling author of Strong Is the New Pretty and The Heart of a Boy. Kate's work is real, raw, and tries to capture girls and boys as they really are, doing what they love, in a manner that doesn't look posed. Our conversation with Kate is all about how she got started in photography, how she came up with the idea for Strong Is the New Pretty, and what goes into making her non-stereotypical images. Kate starts by telling us about how her passion for photography got ignited when she wanted to portray her kids in a way that felt true and authentic.

From a young age, Kate had a passion for the oceans and this was only deepened when Kate moved to Melbourne in 2014 where she joined Sea Shepherd, an international, marine focussed environmental group with a mission to Defend, Conserve and Protect our oceans. Kate joined Sea Shepherd because she was passionate about preserving our planet and felt she could no longer be a bystander, anxious about threats to marine habitats. Starting off as an onshore volunteer; Kate spent her time fundraising for the organisation and promoting marine conservation in her spare time. She then signed up to crew on board the Sea Shepherd vessels and has since taken part in 6 campaigns off shore, starting with an Antarctica campaign to oppose Japanese whaling and most recently has been concentrating her efforts on defending the world’s most endangered marine mammal, the Vaquita Porpoise, from becoming extinct in Mexico.Kate also decided she wanted to fundraise for this cause, managing to raise just under $7000 that was spent directly towards keeping the ships at sea and the crews fed and safe Mexico. Kate wanted to raise awareness for the plight of this animal and along with another Sea Shepherd crew member they did just that, by walking 400km in 20 days down the west coast of the USA, along the Pacific Crest Trail in January of this year. Sadly due to COVID these vessels are no longer able to patrol the area and for the few remaining Vaquita (estimated between 6-19) things are looking increasingly desperate.Mentions:Sea Shepherd - https://www.seashepherd.org.au/Whale Wars (series) - https://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/whale-wars/Animal Planet - https://www.animalplanet.com/Cowspiracy (film) - https://www.cowspiracy.com/The Cove (film) - https://www.opsociety.org/our-work/films/the-cove/Blackfish (film) - http://www.blackfishmovie.com/Sea of Shadows (film)- https://films.nationalgeographic.com/sea-of-shadows?fbclid=IwAR3aUzAFV2MhDcVxwCrJUp2tz4HGlDkcafM0ZJHJnQz5OIkEejDEyzrmcrsWild (movie) - https://www.searchlightpictures.com/wild/Racing Extinction (documentary) - https://racingextinction.com/Feral - George Monbiot (book) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feral_(Monbiot_book)Lamave - https://www.lamave.org/Hero Round Table - http://heroroundtable.com/

Philip and Caitlin are joined by Joel Panciera, Kelly Borycki, and Kate Parker to discuss the upcoming BABA show and how this ministry is incorporated into the life of the church.
"It's not a girl message, and it's not a boy message. It's a human message. It's about celebrating who you are, whatever you are." Kate T. Parker is the photographer and author behind the best-selling books Strong is the New Pretty and The Heart of a Boy. Her message for children is profoundly simple: You, just as you are, are worthy. You don't need to change who you are. Kids should feel strong and empowered being whoever they are. They should be accepted for staying true to themselves, whatever that looks like. Kate, a mom of two girls (Ella, 14, and Alice, 10) in Atlanta, GA, had a revelation a few years ago while taking photos of her kids. The photos weren't stereotypically "pretty" and posed, and the girls weren't sitting, smiling, wearing matching bows and dresses. They were messy. They were loud. They silly. And Kate wanted to make sure they always embraced that spirit. On this episode, Kate talks about the failure and rejection she experienced on the way to viral success, and talks about the moments when she knew the Strong is the New Pretty movement was making an impact. (They involve a Tweet from Emma Watson, and a DM exchange with David Beckham.) Kate, who is also a multiple-time triathlete and Ironman, opens up about what it's like when your middle school-aged daughter is dealing with bullying or mean girls, and talks about what she's doing to raise strong, confident children. Uber ratings aren’t only important for drivers to determine if they can continue using the ride-hailing service. Riders with low ratings could soon be banned from using the ride-hailing service, Uber announced in a blog post Tuesday, which outlines refreshed guidelines. “Riders may lose access to Uber if they develop a significantly below average rating,” said Kate Parker, Uber’s head of safety brand and initiatives, in the post. “Riders will receive tips on how to improve their ratings, such as encouraging polite behavior, avoiding leaving trash in the vehicle and avoiding requests for drivers to exceed the speed limit.” He also said, riders will have several opportunities to improve their rating before losing complete access to the service. Not many riders are expected to see their accounts deactivated, Parker said, noting drivers have long been expected to meet a minimum rating threshold, which can vary from city to city. “Respect is a two-way street, and so is accountability,” Parker said. “While we expect only a small number of riders to ultimately be impacted by ratings-based deactivations, it’s the right thing to do.” Riders will also have to confirm they understand the updated community guidelines or they risk losing access. According to Uber, a rider needs to take five trips before getting a rider rating. To see your ratings, open the app and touch the menu option. Your rider rating is the number displayed under your name, Uber explains on its website. “The rating system works to make sure that the most respectful riders and drivers are using Uber,” the website explains. “Ratings are always reported as averages, and neither riders nor drivers will see the individual rating left for a particular trip.” Uber also recently launched a new ‘Quiet Mode’ option for premium Uber riders to allow them to specify what level of conversation they’d like with their drivers during their rides. The options on the app are “quiet preferred” or “happy to chat.”

What does it take to creating a culture around wellbeing in the workplace? Forster Communications Marketing Manager, Kate Parker talks about their employee wellbeing strategy and how every employee’s health is important to the organization. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Creating a culture change around wellbeing What contributes to an individual’s wellbeing How to create a vital and energised workforce Training employees to push back with clients and maintaining healthy working hours The impact of having an employee wellbeing strategy Key Takeaways: Having energy from the leadership team has empowered people from across the business to suggest and do different initiatives themselves. Irrespective of the size of the company, if you’re trying to affect a change around wellbeing, when somebody at the top is willing to say, “Actually, this is what mental health means to me, this is what movement means to me, this is what I do to protect my health,” it’s much easier to affect a culture change further down the chain. Wellbeing is physical and mental health as well as the way that you give back and get involved in society. The two biggest issues are diversity and inclusion and mental health. When it comes to mental health, you absolutely can’t rest on your laurels. Action Steps: If you’re the owner of a company or someone in the executive leadership team, address the health of the people for the health of the business. Make sure that any program that you do is what the employees want, that it has an impact, that we can track and see improvements and feedback, and that it’s meaningful to them. Kate said: “Because it’s so mainstream, it’s okay to talk about looking after your wellbeing, and that’s maybe a positive thing that’s come out of it being everywhere. It’s just I think also the downside of that is that it can be dismissed sometimes like a fluffy thing…” “There has to be an environment that supports wellbeing, but it’s up to the individual to do it and to take advantage of those things. And if it isn’t 50-50, if it’s all push from one side, then you’re just this employee thinking that big brother is nagging you…” Thanks for listening! You may know Meschiya Lake as the singer and front person of her band Meschiya Lake and The Little Big Horns. A very different audience knows her as one of the girls on Girls Gone Wild. She s in an episode in New Orelans where Meschiya and her girlfriend are doing what girls do whipping tourists for money. Things get a little out of hand when the "dominatrix type" girlfriend displays her private parts to prove she s a woman, only to find out the person she s flashing is a cop. Then, of course, a riot starts and Meschiya gets arrested for doing what girls do fight cops. Not to detract from the fact that for the other 99.0 of her life Meschiya is a fine singer and is working on a solo album. She does two standout tunes on this show, one original and one penned by Erika "Tuba Skinny" Lewis. Kate Parker doesn t mess around when it comes to getting her point across, either. She met a guy, dated him for two weeks, then presented him with a key to her house, announced she was going to marry him, and changed her career so they could spend time together. That was a few years ago. They re still together, have 3 kids, and the career change ultimately led to Kate getting a PhD and becoming the Executive Director of Market Umbrella, the folks who put on the New Orleans Farmers Markets Downtown, Uptown, in the French Market and Mid City. If you don t know Jamar Pierre there s a good chance you ve seen one of his huge, bright life affirming murals around New Orleans, or in other parts of the country. Jamar s background is as colorful and Louisiana drenched as his art with family from Cajun country and beyond where his family has a whole town named after them. If you re listening to the show and you didn t catch the name of the waitress who managed to sell Meschiya a pair of earrings during the show it s Hannah Berger.
