Danielle Deadwyler joins the show to talk about playing Berniece in Malcolm Washington's directorial debut, The Piano Lesson. Based on August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, the film follows a sibling clash over a prized heirloom piano – the sole vestige of their family's heritage. Deadwyler shares her long-standing connection to Wilson's work, discusses how Berniece's character relates directly to her independent work as a performance artist (which explores the blurred lines of Black female labor in America), and describes the family-dynamic that Washington created for the cast and crew over the course of filming. She also considers how being a middle child impacted the deep sense of familial responsibility she felt growing up, ruminates on how her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia shaped her as an artist, and reflects on the trajectory of her acting career -- which took off in 2020 and has shown no signs of slowing. Danielle Deadwyler, who first grabbed the spotlight for her performance as Emmett Till's mother in the film “Till,” stars in a new film called “The Piano Lesson”—one of August Wilson's Century Cycle plays about Black life in Pittsburgh. Denzel Washington has committed to adapting and producing all ten of Wilson's Century Cycle plays; “The Piano Lesson” is directed by his son Malcolm, and his other son John David co-stars. Deadwyler plays Berniece, a widow who has kept the family piano after her migration north to Pittsburgh; her brother, who remained in Mississippi, wants to sell it to buy a plot of land. Themes of inheritance and history are central to the siblings' conflict. “Histories are passed as we keep doing things together . . . through struggle, through joy, through lovemaking, through challenge,” Deadwyler explained to the New Yorker's Doreen St. Félix. “The Piano Lesson” is playing in select theatres, and will be available on Netflix starting November 22nd.

The image of Emmett Till's mutilated corpse, murdered by white supremcists in 1955, changed the course of the Civil Rights movement. That change came because of Mamie Till, Emmett's mother, who, despite her personal tragedy, knew what it could do for others. “She is the progenitor of a civil rights legacy that allowed for so many other acts of activism to occur,” Danielle Deadwyler, who plays Mamie in Till (in theaters, October 14) told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. On today's episode, Danielle Deadwyler and Chinonye Chukwu, the director of ‘Till,' join Scott to talk about the film, why it's so important, and what they hope people will take from the film. The 60th edition of the New York Film Festival, currently in progress through October 16th, recently hosted the World Premiere of Chinonye Chukwu's powerful new drama, Till, in the festival's Spotlight section. Till tells the story of Mamie Till-Mobley, the Chicago woman whose son, Emmett Till, was lynched while visiting cousins in Mississippi and whose body became an indelible image of the horrors of American racism. Employing a direct, unflinching, yet sensitive gaze, Chukwu has created the definitive drama of this woman's grief and resilience, and in an astonishing performance, Danielle Deadwyler captures both a mother's indescribable heartbreak and her inspiring ascension to the role of civil rights activist. Till is a momentous reminder of an ever-present tragedy, featuring painstaking production design, subtly expressive camera framing and composition, and a note-perfect supporting cast, including Sean Patrick Thomas, Jalyn Hall, Tosin Cole, John Douglas Thompson, Frankie Faison, and Whoopi Goldberg. Listen to the press conference below with director Chinonye Chukwu, producer and co-writer Keith Beauchamp, and cast members Danielle Deadwyler, Whoopi Goldberg, Jalyn Hall, John Douglas Thompson, and Sean Patrick Thomas, moderated by NYFF Main Slate selection committee member, Rachel Rosen.
