Congotronics International - "Where's The One?," a 2022 single on Crammed Discs. Congotronics International is truly a global affair: this supergroup comprises members of Konono Nº1, Kasai Allstars, Deerhoof, Juana Molina, Wildbirds & Peacedrums, and Skeletons' Matt Mehlan. Their forthcoming full-length, Where's The One (due April 29th via Crammed Discs), was crafted over ten years, with files being emailed across four continents, sent from Kinshasa DRC, Buenos Aires, New Mexico, New York, Stockholm and Brooklyn.  “There was no rational explanation behind what was going on, it was just direct, immediate experience on both sides. Things you think are impossible just happen,” Vincent Kenis of Crammed Discs said in a press release (Kenis is the co-founder of Kasai Allstars and curator/producer of the Congotronics series). Nous recevons d'abord Gabriel Saglio qui présente son nouvel album Lua chez Daydream Music. Featuring Bonga, Cyril Atef, Sekouba Bambino, Lucia de Carvalho. Né au sein d'une fratrie d'artistes, Gabriel Saglio parcourt la France depuis 2003 avec le groupe qu'il a fondé : "Les Vieilles Pies". Il réalise ainsi près de 700 concerts: 6 musiciens sur scène et des Live réputés pour leur générosité. Malgré une même équipe toujours très active sur scène, Gabriel Saglio assume cette fois un album à son nom. Chanteur, auteur, compositeur, il porte haut le verbe et la qualité de texte tout en invitant chacun dans une musique festive et métissée. Son opus précédent sorti en 2018: «Le Chant des rameurs» avait déjà commencé à creuser un sillon original à ce chanteur curieux à mi-chemin entre la Chanson Française et la musique d'Afrique de l'Ouest. Récompensé par un coup de cœur de l'académie Charles Cros côté Chanson et une invitation pour un Live à "l'Afrique en Solo" de France Inter côté Afrique, le pari audacieux de cette union a, semble-t-il, réussi… Nous retrouvons donc Gabriel Saglio avec ce nouveau disque: Lua ( = Lune en portugais). Cet élégant voyageur a décidé d'approfondir son créneau de chanson métissée, mais nulle possibilité pour lui d'être là où son public l'attend. Un pas de côté et le voilà qui revient avec ses dix nouvelles chansons aux rythmes syncopés d'une Afrique Lusophone cette fois. Si Gabriel Saglio signe une fois de plus les textes de ce nouvel album, les musiques, elles, ont été composées en trio avec l'aide de deux de ses musiciens: Yoan Hernandez (guitare) et Vincent Barrau (basse). L'Afrique Lusophone se fait entendre avec des rythmes empruntés aux musiques du Cap-Vert, de Guinée Bissau ou de l'Angola. Avec des textes toujours en français, la mélancolie de la Morna ne semble pourtant jamais bien loin dans la voix éraillée de Gabriel Saglio, les guitares se font tantôt Cavaquinho tantôt nerveuses pour danser le Funana avec l'accordéon et toujours la basse et les percussions invitent à la danse grâce aux syncopes de ces musiques enivrantes. Alors, quand la danse bat son plein, de nombreux chœurs inondent soudain cet album, nous plongeant définitivement dans l'héritage de ce Cap-Vert des années 70-80 ou la Guinée Bissau des Super Mama Djombo. Comme dans son précédent opus, Gabriel Saglio réussit à embarquer avec lui quelques passagers prestigieux venus apporter leur souffle reconnu à ses voiles: ➜ le batteur Cyril Atef signe la plupart des batteries de cet album qui lui ressemble ➜ la chanteuse Lucia de Carvalho (Angola / Brésil) vient poser sa voix sur le sensuel « Dans tes bras ». ➜ le beatmaker nantais Raphaël d'Hervez participe au son électronique avec "Nuage" ➜ le compagnon de route du précédent opus (et invité régulier sur scène) Sekouba Bambino (Guinée Conakry) vient rappeler qu'il est bien l'une des plus belles voix d'Afrique. ➜ le mixage a été réalisé par Olivier Lude au studio Ferber (M, Brigitte Fontaine, Johnny Hallyday) Enfin, comme Gabriel Saglio semble connaître les figures tutélaires de ces musiques qu'il affectionne, il s'offre même l'incroyable chance d'un duo avec la plus grande voix de cette Afrique Lusophone : le chanteur Bonga. IKOQWE est un duo de personnages de fiction qui débarque d'un espace-temps à des années lumière de notre réalité. Confrontés au monde d'aujourd'hui, ils nous transmettent leurs impressions tout au long de cet album qui mélange allègrement musique électronique, hip hop et sonorités d'instruments angolais ancestraux. IKOQWE est né de l'union de deux vieux amis, étroitement liés à la scène musicale de Luanda: Pedro Coquenão, connu sous le nom de Batida (artiste né en Angola et élevé à Lisbonne et l'un des leaders de la nouvelle vague de la musique électronique africaine) est 'Coqwe', tandis que Luaty Beirão alias Ikonoklasta (rappeur angolais devenu activiste iconique) est ‘Iko'. Son inspiration vient autant du hip hop old school que de la musique traditionnelle angolaise. Certains morceaux comportent des sons provenant d'archives de la Bibliothèque internationale de musique africaine. IKOQWE a utilisé des enregistrements de terrain réalisés en Angola par l'ethnomusicologue Hugh Tracey, dans les années 50. Ils ont surtout travaillé avec des enregistrements comportant des ngomas, des dikanzas et des kissanges (pianos à pouces), l'instrument emblématique utilisé dans toute l'Afrique, dont la popularité a été renforcée grâce au groupe Konono N° 1. A collection of pieces reflecting my mood as we near the end of Summer 2020, the summer of Covid-19, and the eve of a potentially apocalyptic American election. The electrified mbira ensemble Konono N°1 from Congo Republic plays music that is simultaneously joyous and furious, danceable but stimulating cornersof the mind that reflect on history and colonialism, folk culture and electrified popular music. With a wave of recent lynchings of African-Americans by uniformed police in the USA, forces that often see themelves as occupying armies, I'm reminded ofthis poignant blues by the legendary Blind Lemon Jefferson. While the singer laments that he will be executed for “doing something wrong”, one can't help imagine that we are witness to a much more primitive form of justice, that of the lynch mob. Some of my favorite guitar music of all time is vọng cổ music from Vietnam, performed on electric guitars with deeply scalloped fretboards and-built-in electronic effects. This music is deep blues, transnational and cosmic. With the Linda Music track from what was the Central African Republic, we hear amusic now vanished, played by people extinguished in the civil war between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes. Tragic, beautiful music. At this point, I humbly add my own composition Storm of the Eye performed by thefantastic virtuosi Hilary Hahn on violin and Cory Smythe on piano. Commissioned in 2009 by Hilary for her album In 27 Pieces, the piece makes great demands on the players both in use of extended techniques and in summoning a feeling for the times. This program closesout with an excerpt from Quatermass by the great Tod Dockstader, a visionary pioneer of music concrete and electro acoustic music. He worked outside of the academy and therefore never received the recognition due him. His music was visceral and powerful, perfect for this moment. Hemos tenido la suerte de compartir este AfroClub con Juno & Darrell, que se han acercado a nuestro estudio para presentarnos su álbum de debut, Universo, un disco donde la electrónica se encuentra con la música africana junto al soul o el jazz, creando un sonido único, repleto de atmósferas envolventes. Repasamos con ellos prácticamente todo el disco, y nos cuentan todo acerca del proceso de creación y producción de cada uno de los temas del album, explicándonos también el sentido de sus letras. Una auténtica gozada poder disfrutar de sus sensaciones que nos ayudan a entender su obra y su música. Además, nos regalaron dos magníficos temas en directo donde pudimos disfrutar con los teclados de Darrell y con la hermosa voz de Juno. También hablamos con Juno & Darrell de uno de los instrumentos tradicionales africanos más importantes, la kalimba o mbira, que ellos han incorporado de una forma natural a su propuesta musical, y con esa excusa se nos colaron en el programa dos músicos africanos de alto nivel. Por un lado, Oliver Mtukudzi, al que recordamos que hace unos años nos ilustraba en un taller como las guitarras de Zimbabwe imitaban los acordes de la mbira. Y por otro lado, también tenemos a los congoleños Konono Nº1, grandes maestros de la experimentación con sus mbiras electrificadas, amplificadas y distorsionadas, que las llevan al límite en su fusión imposible entre electrónica y música tribal, y que según nos confiesan Juno & Darrell han sido una gran inspiración para ellos en este disco, Universo, que tanto nos ha entusiasmado, y que estamos deseando disfrutar en directo en la gira que comienza ahora.

Comenzamos el año con un ritual que a nosotros nos encanta: hacer nuestra selección de lo que más nos ha gustado de música africana del año 2016. A lo largo del mes de diciembre, un montón de medios hacen sus selecciones, pero nosotros vamos siempre un poquito más despacio, entre otras cosas porque nos gusta esperar a ver si el día 31 de diciembre se publica una obra maestra, pero tampoco este año ha surgido ese disco mágico en el último momento, aunque no perdemos la esperanza de que nuestra espera tenga algún año su recompensa.Es inevitable hablar de “lo mejor” o de “lo más destacado” de la música africana del año, pero nosotros tenemos claro que esta lista es solo una selección de las muchas posibles, guiada por nuestros gustos personales, y también, por la música que ha llegado a nuestros oídos, ya que es solo una mínima parte de los que se hace en el continente.Y dicho todo esto, los nominados para este año han sido: Konono Nº1 y Jupiter del Congo, siempre con un pie en el futuro. Bombino y Noura Mint Seymali con las músicas procedentes del desierto. Mabiisi explorando el rap con bases tradicionales. La música vudú y funk de Benín y Togo, con Vaudou Game, la Orchestre Poly-Rythmo y la Gangbé Brass Band. De Angola, Bonga que a sus 74 años nos sigue entregando maravillosas canciones, y de Senegal, ese músico inquieto que es Baaba Maal. De Guinea Conakry, Nakany Kanté, que con su segundo trabajo da un salto importante, situándola como una de las artistas más prometedoras para los próximos años. Y entre los debuts más importantes, Afro Simba Band, modernizando músicas tradicionales de la costa de Kenya.

(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJFpYV-Aw9Y) *************** Welcome to summer!  The pool parties and beach trips have begun and oh man did I get so sunburned at the beach the other day.  Who knew you needed to sunscreen your shins?!  This collection goes in several different but related directions and should, in addition to giving you an hour an a half mix for being outdoors, also provide the seeds for plenty of future discovery.  We start with Ghanaian Highlife and then we're all over the map with disco, breakbeat, jazz, afro funk, a little global bass, and of course some steel pans.  It's a lot of fun.    My intent was to have this out last week before I went on travel but of course I ran into a couple glitches during post (basically one huge unforced technical error on my part) so one or two date references may seem a bit out of place.  It turns out this whole podcast thing is way more than just picking and playing songs.  This go round I timed some aspects of the process because I never really know how much time I spend on an episode.  Selecting the songs could be any length of time.  Some tracks come from memories from years ago so that part is hard to define.  More quantifiable though is hardware setup (mic on stand, usb dj controller, usb analog to digital interface, two laptops, a second monitor for laptop 1) and software setup (Abelton, Serato, MS Word).  Hardware is always the same but I swear, there is a different software glitch every single time.  Minimum 30 minutes but easily can grow to an hour or more.  I also usually put in at least two hours writing up a basic script but then there are also the random hours of learning about things that eventually contribute to the story.  Recording itself is the length of the podcast, so about an hour and forty minutes this time.  Post production is another big chunk.  I have a couple compressors and a reverse limiter setup in Ableton now so I spend far less time than I used to getting audio ducking and general levels balanced correctly.  Overall, it does come out quieter than my purchased songs and I haven't really figured out why yet.  There's probably some easy fix, if so, I'm all ears.  (It's an overall gain thing rather than a loudness issue I think.)  As a matter of fact I'd love to hear any suggestions for upping the production quality.  Anyway, after exporting the mixdown I use Podreel on my PC to add in the chapters with track titles, album art, and links-to-buy.    That program is super finicky and requires me to use my old PC so again, ideas for other options would be greatly appreciated.  Apple removed the chapter functionality from GarageBand several versions ago for some reason so I don't know of any way to do it on a Mac.  All of that can take two to four hours, sometimes more.  And finally, there is the uploading, blog writing, tracklist prep, and social media posting.  So give or take there is a hidden eight or so hours in there for producing each episode.  Makes more sense to me now why it is hard to get episodes out!
