Today, we are continuing our study of the Gospel According to John. John, the beloved disciple, records for us the initial words of John the Baptist regarding the Lord Jesus. He is the Lamb of God. He takes away the sins of the world. This statement of the greatest of prophets would have brought so many of the Biblical themes as a flood to the minds of the hearers. God had given His people many symbolic examples of their need for a substitute and a sacrifice. They were guilty. They needed a representative and a substitute. Their substitute needed to be perfect; without spot or blemish. There had to be an exchange of death. The innocent needed to be given for the guilty. Justice needed to be done. And here is introduced the true Lamb of God. The perfect, true, and final substitute had entered their world and their experience. He was finally here. His appearance signaled the fulfillment of all of God's promises of redemption. May God bless us with an understanding of this truth that will strengthen us, cause us to rejoice, and fill us with big faith.

This powerful exploration of Exodus 11-12 takes us to one of the most pivotal moments in biblical history: the final plague and the institution of Passover. We encounter God's people after enduring brutal slavery in Egypt, crying out for deliverance while Pharaoh's heart remains hardened through nine devastating plagues. The tenth plague stands apart as uniquely terrifying: every firstborn son would die unless protected by the blood of a spotless lamb. What makes this passage so profound is the theological depth beneath the narrative. This isn't arbitrary divine cruelty, but rather God bringing all humanity to account for sin. The firstborn son represented the entire household, and in striking the firstborn, God was calling every family to face the reality that all have sinned and the wages of sin is death. Yet in the midst of judgment, we find breathtaking grace. God provided a way of escape through the Passover lamb, which had to be perfect, killed, and consumed. The father would slit the lamb's throat, watching an innocent creature die in place of his guilty family, then paint its blood on the doorposts as a declaration of faith. This becomes the ultimate foreshadow of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. When we understand that Jesus died on Passover at twilight, when the lambs were being slaughtered, and that He transformed the Passover meal to point to His own body and blood, we see God's redemptive plan woven throughout history. The message confronts us with an uncomfortable truth: one day, the only thing that will matter is whether the blood of the Lamb covers our lives.

We sing about the blood of Jesus. We remember it in communion. But do you know its power?
