Coast to Coast Water Conservation: How Florida & Hawaii Reward Graywater Recycling

Better Homes, Better Future

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2025 42:52

Water scarcity is a headline that we see daily, however water conservation continues to be left out of the discussion for home builders describing themselves as Net Zero.  As we wait for mandates of water conservation in the housing sector to be implemented throughout North America, there are a few states that are going a step further and offering incentives to builders when they implement water-saving technologies. Decentralized greywater recycling offers a 25-45% reduction in potable water use and in turn a reduction in wastewater production. By building homes and multi-residential buildings with greywater recycling, potable water use can be reduced by 10,000 gallons per home every year. Two states are leading the way in North America in offering incentives to builders and developers when they implement greywater recycling. Florida and Hawaii have implemented rebates and/or density credits to builders and developers statewide to be proactive during this time of water crisis.Learning Objectives:Learn how decentralized greywater recycling is one of the most efficient ways to reduce potable water use.Understand that the sustainable home should always include water conservation technologies.Discover how states with incentives and rebates for the implementation of greywater recycling are leading the way when it comes to saving water.Learn how water conservation approached proactively as a reactive response will lead to the disruption of the issue of building permits.

Energy Codes are Getting Complicated! It's time for a simpler approach

Better Homes, Better Future

In the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), the primary residential provisions of the code (Chapter 4) consisted of four pages. That same chapter in the 2021 IECC is 21 pages long! Mandatory, prescriptive, performance, energy rating index, additional efficiency packages and UA trade-offs all combine to make IECC compliance complicated. Prescriptive compliance is increasingly more expensive and complicated to use, and the performance compliance option doesn't allow consideration for high efficiency equipment. The energy rating index path provides a whole-house performance approach but has aggressive targets that are complicated with amendments for ventilation requirements and no requirements for quality assurance oversight of third parties. If the energy code's primary purpose is to reduce energy consumption, why can't we set performance goals and let builders figure out how to achieve it? One recent example of this approach is in Texas. Texas House Bill 3215 updated the state's universal energy code compliance pathway to allow builders to use the energy rating index for energy code compliance across the state, in lieu of the state energy code or any stretch code adopted by municipalities. The legislation ratchets down target ERI scores to improve efficiency through 2028, allowing builders to plan for future efficiency requirements. Attend this webinar to learn how a simpler approach to energy code compliance can work, how it can be used to set a path to net-zero energy and how to implement it in your state. Learning Objectives: Learn about the changes and complexities of the IECC over time. Understand how the energy code can be simplified. Be able to describe how a simplified performance-based approach has worked in other states. Learn how a performance-based energy code approach can be used to get builders to net-zero homes more quickly.

The Inflation Reduction Act will soon be rolling out financial incentives for more efficient HVAC systems like heat pumps to save energy and improve home comfort for American households. But what happens if these systems are improperly installed? According to a recent analysis by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, 70% to 90% of residential HVAC systems have at least one problem with their installation that is wasting energy, whether it's improper refrigerant charge or airflow. The Department of Energy's Smart Tools for Efficient HVAC Performance (STEP) Campaign is working to address this issue through widespread adoption of smart diagnostic tools in the HVAC industry. Smart diagnostic tools can help technicians commission new HVAC systems and verify optimal performance. When used in quality installation programs to ensure new HVAC systems are installed without energy-wasting errors, these tools can be the solution to ensuring IRA-backed HVAC systems are delivering the home comfort and energy savings promised. Learning Objectives: - Learn about smart diagnostic tools and how they work - Understand the business value of smart diagnostic tools for HVAC contractors - Understand how smart diagnostic tools align with the goals of the IRA - Learn how smart diagnostic tools can be incorporated in quality installation programs

We think important objects and events in our world will automatically grab our attention, but they often don't, particularly when our attention is focused on something else. The failure to notice unexpected objects or events when attention is focused elsewhere is now known as inattentional blindness. The study of such failures of awareness has a long history, but their practical importance has received increasing attention over the past decade. This module describes the history and status of research on inattentional blindness, discusses the reasons why we find these results to be counterintuitive, and the implications of failures of awareness for how we see and act in our world. Learning Objectives -Learn about inattentional blindness and why it occurs. -Identify ways in which failures of awareness are counterintuitive. -Better understand the link between focused attention and failures of awareness. Do you regularly spot editing errors in movies? Can you multitask effectively, texting while talking with your friends or watching television? Are you fully aware of your surroundings? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you're not alone. And, you're most likely wrong. More than 50 years ago, experimental psychologists began documenting the many ways that our perception of the world is limited, not by our eyes and ears, but by our minds. We appear able to process only one stream of information at a time, effectively filtering other information from awareness. To a large extent, we perceive only that which receives the focus of our cognitive efforts: our attention. #Psychology #QueensU #Neuro Find out more about Flourish at the links below: ➡️ Website: https://www.Flourish.Mom ➡️ Facebook: https://www.Facebook.Com/Flourish.Mom ➡️ Twitter: https://www.Twitter.Com/FlourishMom ➡️ Instagram: https://www.Instagram.com/FlourishMom ➡️ Pinterest: https://www.Pinterest.ca/WowFlourishMom ➡️ Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/q70Lrz3PbyQ   Videos Mentioned: Monkey Business: https://youtu.be/IGQmdoK_ZfY Who Dunnit: https://youtu.be/ubNF9QNEQLA   PSYC 100: Principles of Psychology F21 by PSYC100 is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License, except where otherwise noted. Evolution or change over time occurs through the processes of natural and sexual selection. In response to problems in our environment, we adapt both physically and psychologically to ensure our survival and reproduction. Sexual selection theory describes how evolution has shaped us to provide a mating advantage rather than just a survival advantage and occurs through two distinct pathways: intrasexual competition and intersexual selection. Gene selection theory, the modern explanation behind evolutionary biology, occurs through the desire for gene replication. Evolutionary psychology connects evolutionary principles with modern psychology and focuses primarily on psychological adaptations: changes in the way we think in order to improve our survival. Two major evolutionary psychological theories are described: Sexual strategies theory describes the psychology of human mating strategies and the ways in which women and men differ in those strategies. Error management theory describes the evolution of biases in the way we think about everything. Learning Objectives: - Learn what “evolution” means. - Define the primary mechanisms by which evolution takes place. - Identify the two major classes of adaptations. - Define sexual selection and its two primary processes. - Define gene selection theory. - Understand psychological adaptations. - Identify the core premises of sexual strategies theory. - Identify the core premises of error management theory, and provide two empirical examples of adaptive cognitive biases. Podcast transcript Summary:   African Americans face many barriers in getting a proper ADHD evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment. Practitioners need to be mindful of the historical mistreatment of African Americans by the medical community in order to better serve these patients. Dr. Roberto Olivardia, a clinical psychologist and a lecturer in the department of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, describes specific barriers that African Americans face and how they are often misdiagnosed with behavioral problems or overdiagnosed without proper assessment. Dr. Olivardia talks about empowering African-American parents and families so they can advocate for their children, especially when facing a culturally insensitive school system or medical clinician. Additionally, he exhorts practitioners to understand the cultural context of where people of color are coming from and to help increase awareness of ADHD in the African-American community.   Roberto Olivardia, PhD Dr. Roberto Olivardia is a clinical psychologist and lecturer in the department of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. AADOM Radio & Care Credit are Excited to Present- Penny Reed Make Treatment Presentations More like DISNEY and Less Like The IRS Most dental offices have another practice within their practice when you consider the amount of unscheduled treatment that walks out the door each day. Nothing can be more disheartening than sitting down with the patient to review their treatment plan and find that they really don’t seem to value or want to spend the money on their needed treatment. The ultimate way to work smarter, not harder is to lead your team to greater case acceptance success. Learning Objectives: • Learn how to be more like Disney in your approach to engaging the patient and inspiring them to want their ideal treatment • Discover the case killers that most practices are currently doing that confuse and turn off the patient • Identify the most powerful strategies, questions, and phrases you must implement to have your patients schedule today • Simplify the financial agreement process to make it easier for patients to say yes More About Penny Reed: Penny Reed is a dental practice speaker, coach, and author of the book Growing Your Dental Business. She coaches dentists and their teams to raise the bar on their performance and create an office culture where the entire team looks forward to coming to work every day. As a result of her work, participants and clients share that their team is more energized, more productive, and takes more ownership of their roles and responsibilities in achieving results. Penny began her career in dental office management in 1992. She discovered a passion for helping others grow their practices and has been coaching dentists and their teams since 1994. She has been named a Leader in Dental Consulting by Dentistry Today, from 2007 to 2018. She is a member of the Speaking Consulting Network, Academy of Dental Management consultants, and the American Association of Dental Office Managers. Penny is also the past president of the Tennessee Chapter of the National Speaker’s Association. In addition, she is the creator and host of the podcast, Growing Your Dental Business, on iTunes. Penny lives in Tennessee with her husband Rob and is the proud mom of Brooke and Savanah. She has an addiction to the Disney theme parks and is always planning her next trip or dental retreat near the magic.
