David and Tamler fall under the spell of Lee Chang-dong's 2018 masterpiece Burning, a movie where nothing is what it seems, or maybe it is. An alienated young man meets what seems like his dream girl from his small town, but she's about to leave for Africa. Will he take care of her cat? Is there a cat? When she comes back she's attached (maybe) to a slick rich guy played by Steven Yeun and then she disappears. What happened? What's real and what's a pantomime? Adapted from a Murakami short story that's adapted from a Faulkner short story, this movie warrants a true VBW deep dive, so we had to do it in two parts. This is part 1. Plus another segment of our pet peeves. “Updating my priors,” “Fixed it for you,” faculty governance, and more, these are the things that really grind our gears.
Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene (@pareene), staff writer at The New Republic and co-host of the podcast The Politics of Everything, to wrap up this week's events before Matthew Film Guy (@langdonboom) drops by afterwards! Alex, Emma, and Sam explore the lingering effects of Donald Trump, starting with the developments on the Jan. 6 commission and touching on the failure of his Texas Senatorial endorsement, before they discuss how the lingering shadow of Trump will help boost Democratic engagement at the polls in 2022, while the lack of him actually running won't necessarily draw out his full base. They, then, move onto the delays in the Portman-Sinema infrastructure bill, highlighting Sinema's love for theatrics and a good photo-op, and how her role in bipartisanship, despite her performance, doesn't have the same security of being a Dem in a red state, like Manchin, or with deep political roots in their state, like Joe Lieberman. Next, they take suggestions from Robert Rector's piece admitted that just giving money to poor people helps solve poverty, and reflect on the success of the pandemic payments in doing the same. Sam and Emma wrap up the first half with the continued absurd performance of Republican outrage over pandemic protections, and Joe Biden's response to a question on vaccine mandates. And in the Fun Half: Matthew Film Guy joins once again to cover the most important topics in film today, from the impact of the pandemic on independent filmmaking (including the release of Black Bear, edited by him!) to drawing more youthful audiences to the theater. He also gives his top cinema recommendations, including, Breaker Morant, Lost Horizon, and Lee Chang-Dong's Poetry, with Emma, Matt, and Bradley (after Sam drops out) touching on their recent cinema takes and the role of the ever eccentric Nicholas Cage in pop culture. Sam rejoins partway through as Emma covers Alan Dershowitz reminding Laura Ingraham that the constitution, indeed, does not cover anything regarding vaccinations, and Meghan McCain's discussion on nepotism (definitely not from experience though). Sam and Emma round out the fun half with J**** D***'s continued targeted misogyny, and how his clamor for reactionary views has led him to become a person that should, in his own words, be disqualified from polite society.

In today’s episode, we discuss Burning — a slow-burn psychological thriller directed by Lee Chang-Dong. Based on a short story by Haruki Murakami, this enigmatic and surreal film pulls viewers in for an ominous yet captivating ride full of bewilderment, magnetic allure and profound mystery that makes viewers question everything on screen.
This week's story is by South Korean writer and filmmaker Lee Chang-Dong, and it's called "On Destiny." It basically traces the entire life of its main character, from his youth in an orphanage, separated during the war from his parents, and through stints of poverty, jail time, and then a possible payday. We talk about what makes certain stories feel fable-like, and the surprising little details that crop up when reading fiction in translation, like unexpected metaphors and unfamiliar aphorisms. Also this week: another installment of Celebrities Recommend, including book picks from a star tennis player and a Food Network star. Read the short story here: https://www.asymptotejournal.com/special-feature/lee-chang-dong-on-destiny/ If you like the show, and would like more Book Fight in your life, please consider joining our Patreon. For $5, you'll get access to three bonus episodes a month, including Book Fight After Dark, where we read some of the world's weirdest--and steamiest!--romance novels. We've also recently begun a new series of Patreon-only mini-episodes called Reading the Room, in which we offer advice on how to navigate awkward, writing-related social situations. How do you talk to a writer whose work you like after a reading? How do you promote your own writing without annoying people? Should you force your spouse or significant other to read your work? We've got the answers to these and many other pressing questions.

Trevor Beaulieu of the Champagne Sharks podcast joins Teen and Jess for a deep dive into the Asian American rom-com "Always Be My Maybe" (available on Netflix). While met with widespread acclaim and an easy-to-love throwback sensibility, a closer look into this un-serious entertainment raises a lot of questions. "Always" takes the baton from "Crazy Rich Asians" in developing an American genre narrative of contemporary Asian Americans. But the racial aspect of the film does not exempt it from the built-in limitations of the rom-com genre itself. Support us on Patreon! www.patreon.com/planamag TWITTER: T. We're lucky enough to welcome the now Oscar nominated Richard E. Grant on to the podcast to talk about his new film 'Can You Ever Forgive Me?'. As well as that, we delve in to the burning questions and rare answers found in Lee Chang Dong's new filmIn 'Can You Ever Forgive Me?' Melissa McCarthy is brilliantly unsympathetic as literary fraud Lee Israel. With her writing career permanently stalled, inability to get over her ex-girlfriend and no job prospects, she turns her craft to penning elaborate fake letters from the likes of Noël Coward and Dorothy Parker, with the help of her drinking buddy Jack Hock.Adapted from Haruki Murakmi's short story ‘Barn Burning', Lee Chang Dong's ‘Burning' was the toast of Cannes, turning the heat on the Croisette even higher. It's about Jong-soo, who dreams of becoming a writer, who bumps into Hae-mi (Jeon Jong-seo), a forgotten childhood friend. They begin a relationship, but she vanishes, only to return with the mysterious Ben in tow (The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun), who starts to reveal some fascinating hobbies.Discussing the films this week are Kelly Powell, Ella Kemp, Jake Cunningham and Sam HowlettFollow the team on Social Media:@ks_powell - Kelly@jakehcunningham - Jake@SamHowlett_1 - Sam@efekemp - EllaProduced by Jake CunninghamEdited by Mark Towers Hosted on Acast. Além, é claro, do Cantinho do Ouvinte (1:36:29). Bom podcast!

This week on TIFF Long Take, Rob and Geoff sit down with one of the film’s most exciting young actors, Steven Yeun. Steven is probably best known for his role as Glenn Rhee on 'The Walking Dead', but since leaving the show has leaned more towards independent and international cinema with roles in Bong Joon-ho’s 'Okja', Boots Riley’s 'Sorry To Bother You', and, most recently, Lee Chang Dong’s 'Burning'. The Korean thriller premiered at Cannes to rave reviews and is the first film to feature Yeun in a starring role. Yeun talks about the films and filmmakers that influenced him growing up, why he was initially hesitant to make a film in Korea, and what makes Lee Chang Dong so special. He also talks about how he prepares for his roles, the under-representation of Asian Americans in Hollywood films, and why thinks he wouldn’t have been offered a role as substantial as ‘Burning’ in the United States.
