In Episode 279, the hosts learn all about Direct Field Audio Testing, or as one of this week's guests put it, “Blasting super loud sound at spacecraft and satellites!” This episode is sponsored by Allen & Heath and RCF.Many listeners will be familiar with Maryland Sound International (MSI), the sound company best known for its work on large-scale events like New Year's Eve in Times Square, the U.S. Presidential Inauguration, and many more. Fewer know of their sister company, Maryland Sound International — Direct Field Audio Testing (MSI-DFAT), which specializes in turning touring and sound reproduction expertise into creating portable, on-demand acoustic testing labs for spaceships, satellites, and other aerospace devices, replacing much more expensive reverberant chamber facility-based testing. If you thought concert PA systems were loud, wait until you hear about pummeling spaceships with 150-plus dB SPL levels to make sure they're safe for launch and orbit!Guest Alessandro “Alex” Carrella, VP Strategy & Growth at MSI-DFAT, has a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Naples (Italy) and was awarded a PhD in Structural Dynamics at the ISVR (University of Southampton, UK). He's now completing his EMBA at the Universite Louvain-la-Neuve. Alex was a lecturer in Structural Dynamic at the Dept of Aerospace at the University of Bristol. From 2011 to 2020 he worked in different roles to develop testing solutions for the aerospace industry at Siemens (formerly LMS) in Leuven (Belgium). He has become a referent point for the space industry for vibration and acoustic testing, and has been a leading figure in advancing DFAT practices is an active member of the space testing community. Alex has joined MSI-DFAT to lead its international operations and is now shaping MSI's future as VP for Strategy & Growth.Guest Bradley Hope, U.S. Business Development Manager at MSI-DFAT, holds a wealth of experience in acoustic and vibration test engineering and enterprise-level customer relationship management, within the global aerospace industry. Trained under the guidance of vibro-acoustic specialists at Siemens Digital Industries Software, coupled with his passion for business and intrapreneurship, Bradley brings deep commercial expertise to the MSI-DFAT team. Having collaborated closely with clients on a range of complex projects across PLM, CAD, CAE Simulation, and Test Engineering, he possesses a strong understanding of the unique requirements and consistent evolution of the space, aircraft and defense industries. Bradley is enthusiastic about supporting the customer-partners of the Maryland Sound International-Direct Field Acoustic Test (MSI-DFAT) company in its Direct Field Acoustic Noise testing campaigns.Episode Links:MSI-DFAT | Direct Field Acoustic TestingMSI-DFAT on Instagram“NASA's Successful Quantifying of Comedy Timing” by Penn Jillette and TellerEpisode 279 TranscriptConnect with the community on the Signal To Noise Facebook Group and Discord Server. S2E9: We Are Not All the Same with Dr Batja Mesquita, Professor of Psychology at University of Leuven, Belgium with host Dr. Nick. For decades population health in America has been marked by disappointing results and more recently with some negative gains in our overall population health. So will we see it finally focus on social determinants of health like some predict? Reports from The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine going back to 2012 and 2013 highlight our fixation on clinical care and its delivery which as they describe eclipses attention to population-based activities that offer efficient and effective approaches to improving the nation's health. A stand out challenge appears to be cultural in nature. American culture is central to the fabric of our society and integral to healthcare but falls short on the community and social fabric. It is heavy on me and self-reliance, light on the ”we” of our community. But that sense of the individual runs counter to the world we inhabit and the values in healthcare and the long-term common good we are striving for. Your better pill to swallow is to raise awareness of cultural differences in your organization and in the healthcare services you offer. Find out more about this event on our website: https://bit.ly/3UZ4CpV In March 2022, the Republic of Chile placed the first-ever Sovereign Sustainability-Linked Bond (SSLB). This $2 billion 20 year SSLB was more than 4 times oversubscribed - a remarkable achievement given the sovereign bond market's volatility and uncertainty. Green Policy Performance Bonds, Sustainability-Linked bonds (SLBs), and, most noteworthy, Sovereign Sustainability-Linked Bonds (SSLBs) form a subset of green bonds however, they differ from green bonds, social bonds, or sustainability bonds in several crucial ways: First, the funds raised are not tied to a specific project, but a corporate or national objective. Liberating the proceeds from a specific project frees the issuer to deliver sustainability improvements using a wide range of means. Second, SSLBs and SLBs are issued with specific sustainability performance targets (SPTs), which contain key performance indicators (KPIs), for example: “A 20% reduction in scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030”. Third, if the SPT is missed the bond is subject to a ‘step-up' clause, meaning the bond interest increases. Speaker: Patricio Sepúlveda Carmona is currently the Head of Public Debt Office for the Ministry of Finance, where he has also acted as Senior Advisor since 2002. Mr. Sepúlveda obtained his BA in Commercial Engineering, concentrating in Economics, from the Universidad de Talca (Chile) and has a postgraduate degree in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Financial Economics from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). As Head of the Public Debt Office, Mr. Sepúlveda has placed bonds for over US$150 billion in the local and international markets. Under his management, the curves have been extended since 2003, issuing longer bonds. For instance, in 2012, he performed the first external issuance of 30-years and 20-years bonds locally. In 2013, he executed the first issuance of 30-years nominal bonds locally. In 2016, he performed one of the most important LM operation in the local market (US$14.5bn), with the aim to create strong references both in UF and nominal curve. In 2017, he issued the first domestic Euroclearable Bonds for US$1.5 billion offered simultaneously to local and international investors. Additionally, in 2017-2018, he designed the structure and hired Chile's first insurance against earthquake for US$500 million with the World Bank. In 2019, he was in charge of the first issuances of Green Bonds for the equivalent of US$2.4bn. More recently, he was in charge of the issuance of several ESG instruments, including Social and Sustainable bonds of the Republic of Chile.

In this episode, Henrique Choer Moraes, doctoral candidate at the Centre for Global Governance Studies of the University of Leuven (Belgium) and a diplomat with the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discusses his article "The Geoeconomic Challenge To International Economic Law: Lessons From The Regulation Of Data In China." He begins by discussing a "clash of economic models" between China's more state-centered and strategically-guided “geoeconomic” model and the status quo market-oriented economic model adopted among others by the US and the European Union. He is interested in impacts of that clash on the functioning of international economic law going forward. In order to respond to China’s geoeconomic approach to economic relations, he argues that governments in the US, the EU and elsewhere are abandoning market-oriented attitudes and taking the front-seat in economic relations, guided also by a geoeconomic inspiration—leading to what he calls a "geoeconomic chain reaction". This dynamic is changing the logic underlying rules of international economic law, he claims.Moraes shows how this larger geoeconomic shift impacts international economic law by discussing data regulation in China, where domestic rules limit outflows of data in order to retain, under China’s control, a "strategic asset" that contributes to its development of artificial intelligence. He continues by reflecting upon nations' approaches to international cyber governance, and how China's approach to "cyber-sovereignty" and revelations about American intelligence operations by Edward Snowden have affected the international cyber governance realm. These different views are manifestations of the clash of models with impact on concrete negotiations, such as the ones on electronic commerce currently taking place at the World Trade Organization. He concludes by laying out possible consequences that this geoeconomic shift might introduce into international economic law going forward. He thinks it is likely to be a more fragmented set of rules, less international and more domestic, and generating less predictability for market actors operating at a global level. Moraes is on Twitter at @choermoraes. Many believers live their entire lives without learning much about other people's religion. Maybe some people avoid interreligious dialogue because they think they already know their religion is true. Maybe some people fear that such exchanges might somehow change them and they don't want change. In this episode we're joined by Catherine Cornille. She's a Catholic theologian at Boston College and an enthusiastic supporter of interreligious dialogue. We're talking about her book, The Impossibility of Interreligious Dialogue. If you've ever wanted to have better conversations with people of different faiths—or even with people of your own faith who see things differently—this episode is for you. Cornille identifies behaviors to cultivate when talking to people who see things differently. She says interreligious dialogue can teach us so much about other religions, but also so much more about our own. Special thanks to our friends at Brigham Young University's Wheatley Institution, who invited Dr. Cornille to deliver last year's Truman G. Madsen Lecture on the Eternal Man. About the Guest Catherine Cornille is the author of The Im-Possibility of Interreligious Dialogue. She earned her PhD in Religious Studies from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). She recently presented the 2018 Truman G. Madsen Lecture on the Eternal Man at Brigham Young University. Cornille is also founding and managing editor of the book series “Christian Commentaries on Non-Christian Sacred Texts,” and the editor of The Wiley-Blackwell Companion to Inter-Religious Dialogue.
