Dr. Laura records a special episode live in Bruges, Belgium, with guest Philip Vanhoutte for a tour of the Generous Workhome. Philip explains how the vital elements of nature and wellbeing were distilled into six essentials for work health, and how those six essentials were built into the Generous Workhome to create an optimal, productive environment.Philip drew from research into the value of pulling nature into daily life and the concepts of biophilic design to create the blueprint for the Generous Workhome. His theory is encapsulated by the acronym EASI, which is defined as Energizing being the key to driving Authoring, Sharing, and Interacting. As Philip guides Dr. Laura through the prototype Workhome studio spaces, it is evident that elements of sound blocking, nature, movement, adjustable lighting, and air temperature have all been carefully curated. Dr. Laura learns more about how EASI needs are woven into a functional work layout, the intention behind every choice, and how the outdoors can be brought into daily life.  The YouTube version of this episode will enable viewers to truly see the Generous Workhome, aspects of which can be applied into our own work environments.“In here you are hearing the sounds of a forest at this very moment. It's a biophilic sound which has no repetition or pattern in it. So it's not twice the same bird that you're hearing chirping. And that puts people at ease. What human beings and animals need is the sounds of water, wind, and birds. If they hear these things, they relax.” Philip VanhoutteAbout Philip Vanhoutte:Leveraging a rewarding international career in the ITC industry, Philip Vanhoutte's passion for personal productivity tools and communication & collaboration solutions morphed into a singular purpose: accelerating the realization of human potential.Philip champions the adoption of Smarter Working: a holistic human centered work design practice that unifies space, technology, and people disciplines. He co-authored The Smarter Working Manifesto, a definitive guide on how to shape the best work style. In his quest for health and joy at work he learned that Nature Deficit Disorder has produced highest ever burnouts, work induced sickness, and a struggling workforce. He campaigned for more nature at work with Ozadi at SXSW in Austin and GCUC in Denver.Philip graduated from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium with a combined Applied Economics and Engineering degree and a major in Marketing. He started his career at Accenture Consulting, to continue with key change management roles at Engie and Wang Laboratories. In the second part of his IT career, he grew the MCI WorldCom International business, became Chief Marketing Officer at Sony-Ericsson Mobile Communications to finish a blue-chip career as SrVP and MD of Plantronics (now part of HP) Europe and Africa.Since the Financial Crisis of 2008, Philip became a strong advocate of Agile Working with a passion for Human Dimensions of Organisations. Dr. Laura welcomes guests Laura Cohen, counsellor and founder of her own nature therapy practice, and Philip Vanhoutte, ITC industry professional and author of “The Smarter Working Manifesto”, to the show to talk about the power of Vitamin N, nature. Both Laura and Philip are champions of the benefits of a connection with nature at work and in life.Laura Cohen, who works with Dr. Laura through Canada Career Counselling, details studies that show people to be happiest in coastal environments and outdoors. She also cites the profound benefits of nature for those living with ADHD. Philip Vanhoutte is a proponent of Biophilic Design, which includes identifying fourteen patterns of nature that would ideally be included in a building to directly impact the wellness of individuals within. The ways in which nature improves our work lives and overall health are compelling and it becomes apparent that we need to set ourselves up to maximize our interactions with nature. Laura and Philip share their individual expertise on the transformative power of nature and how they each advise incorporating more of the outdoors into our daily lives. “There's also this idea that I think a lot of the time we see nature as this thing that's separate from us or that it's a commodity to fulfill us and make us feel good… it reduces our stress hormones and we see it as something that's beneficial. But the next level is kind of understanding the reciprocity and how do I give back to nature, and developing that sort of deeper relationship with nature.” Laura CohenAbout Laura Cohen:Originally from Montreal, Laura is now based in Halifax with a 10 minute walk to the ocean. For the last 6 years, Laura has worked as a counsellor in universities, Employee Assistance Programs, and in private practice, including her own nature therapy practice and Canada Career Counselling.  Laura holds a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology from McGill University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Psychology from Concordia University. Laura has been a guest lecturer for organizations such as Dalhousie University, Concordia University, Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association presenting on the mental health benefits of nature as well as, offers individual nature-informed therapy and outdoor groups therapeutic services for women and children for an embodied experience. What's Behind The Strange Slowing Of The Earth's Core? Even though some days feel more chaotic than others, the rotation of the surface of the planet proceeds at a pretty constant rate—about one full rotation every 24 hours. But the rotational speed of the inner core is less stable, and has been known to shift over time. Now, researchers are reporting in the journal Nature Geoscience that according to seismic data, the Earth's inner core may have recently paused its rotation, and could even go on to reverse direction relative to the rest of the planet. Tim Revell, deputy United States editor of New Scientist, joins SciFri producer Kathleen Davis to talk about the shift in rotation and other stories from the week in science, including shared language characteristics between humans and wild apes, and a wolf population that has started to enjoy snacking on sea otters. They'll also talk about an ancient Egyptian mummy with a heart of gold, research into why some mushrooms glow in the dark, and a tiny robot with morphing liquid metal capabilities straight out of Hollywood.   Here's What We Know About Long COVID, Three Years Later Just a few months into the pandemic, it became clear that in some people, the SARS-CoV-2 virus caused a cascade of symptoms for months after their initial infections. These lingering effects are now commonly referred to as Long COVID. And as long as the pandemic barrels on, the population of Long COVID patients will continue to grow. Over the past three years, researchers have closely studied these symptoms, seeking to better understand its underlying causes and improve treatment. Guest host Maddie Sofia talks with Hannah Davis, co-founder of the Patient-Led Research Collaborative and co-author of a recently published comprehensive review on the state of Long COVID research, and Dr. Bhupesh Prusty, principal investigator at the Institute for Virology and Immmunobiology at the University of Würzburg in Germany.   Meet The Art Sleuths Using Science To Find Frauds At the end of last year, a big case was decided in the world of art crime. Qatari Sheikh Hamad al Thani won a case against his former art dealer, after nearly $5 million dollars worth of purchased ancient artifacts were all determined to be fake. Among the artifacts was a Hari Hara sandstone statue purported to be from 7th century Vietnam. In reality, the piece was made in 2013. Art experts say forged antiquities are extremely common in museums and private art collections: Former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Thomas Hoving estimated 40% of artworks for sale at any given time were fake. The task of determining what art is real and what art is fake falls to scientists, who use tools like X-rays and carbon dating to get accurate readings of time and place of origin for artifacts. Joining guest host Kathleen Davis to talk about this are Erin Thompson, art crime professor at the City University of New York, and Patrick Degryse, professor of archeometry at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

From ‘Peanut Weddings' to ‘Beef Stands': The Socio-Culinary History of Chicago's ‘Italian Beef' Presented by Anthony F. Buccini, PhD Italian Americans have contributed a considerable number of portable fast foods to regional and local cuisines around the United States, some of which have become extremely popular at the national level. One such food which, despite its frequent discussion in recent food-related media, has remained very much a local dish is Chicago's ‘Italian beef'. As a sandwich filled with thin slices of roasted beef, this product at first blush looks to be an Italian-American take on the mainstream Anglo-American roast beef sandwich, and popular food writers have accordingly sought its origins in terms of some single ‘inventor' whose culinary and entrepreneurial stroke of genius came to be imitated by other small entrepreneurs and thus the dish gradually became established throughout the city and ultimately its suburbs. The idea of seeking an individual responsible for the invention of a given dish is common but often misguided, and in the case of Italian beef it is especially so. My own analysis of the issue of the origins of Chicago's ‘beef sandwich', based in part on my knowledge of Italian and Italian-American cookery and in part on decades of interactions with older lifelong residents of the Taylor Street neighbourhood, where Italian beef first arose as a fast food, indicates, however, that today's messy sandwich is a commercial reflection of a festive dish which itself derives directly from a traditional method of preparing meat; in essence, this dish was brought to America by immigrants from southern Italy and more specifically from Naples and its surrounding area. Of particular interest here are the socio-culinary and economic aspects of this bit of Italian-American food history. Anthony F. Last month, in a marriage of two contract management platforms, Conga acquired Contract Wrangler. For entrepreneur-turned-lawyer-turned-entrepreneur Neil Peretz, it was the conclusion of a journey that began five years earlier, when he founded Contract Wrangler with a vision of a contracts platform that would be more than just a repository, more than able to simply identify key clauses, but that would actually be able to provide answers to what was in those contracts.  What is it like to start, build and then sell a legal tech company? What were the challenges Peretz faced in developing the product and building a market? How did he see his product as distinct from other CLM platforms in the market? What was it like to see the company he started get acquired? On this episode of LawNext, we discuss those questions and others.  Peretz learned firsthand about the challenges of managing too many contracts as general counsel for multiple venture-backed financial services companies, including Aliya Financial Technologies and Better Finance. Even before becoming a lawyer, he was developing software to solve real-world problems, first as co-founder and CEO of PocketMail Group, which launched the first affordable mobile email service, and then as COO and CFO of Libraria/Sertanty, which used computer models to predict novel chemistries.   Peretz  holds law degrees from the UCLA School of Law and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (where he was a Fulbright Scholar), bachelors and masters degrees from Tufts University, and a specialization certificate from the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School.   Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. She has a PhD in Theology, a Master of Religious Education and a Master of Theological Studies. In her PhD, she explored the relationship between trinitarian faith and Christian life through the lens of Lieven Boeve's theology of interruption. She is particularly interested in the way in which we approach theology today, how this might inform and be informed by the experience of Christians within diverse contexts, and how this might, in turn, be reflected in the education of young people in Catholic schools. Teresa works with Catholic Education partners around Australia and with research partners at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven to support schools in the formation, articulation and practice of their Catholic identity. Before coming to ACU, she taught Religious Education and Music in Catholic secondary schools in Victoria and held positions of leadership in Religious Education and Professional Learning.

Updated every two years and now in its 13th edition, the book can hardly keep up with economic and policy developments in the 19-nation Euro Area. But De Grauwe, who is still teaching at the London School of Economics after retiring from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, can always be relied upon to plug the gaps with policy ideas. In the latest of these, he made the case for the European Central Bank to monetize governments’ pandemic-related deficits.

“Blended” approaches to teaching and learning (sometimes also called “hybrid”) combine in-class discussion and activities with a substantial proportion of online course delivery. Done well, blended courses can combine the best of online and on-campus pedagogy, improve student learning outcomes, provide flexibility for non-traditional students, and even save institutions on classroom space and operating costs. To really maximize flexibility for students, about a dozen institutions are pilot-testing “HyFlex” courses, which allow students to seamlessly shift between attending class in person, joining in synchronously online, or catching the class asynchronously later – and they can change their mind, fluidly, from day to day. HyFlex courses might just be the best way to ensure academic continuity in the face of campus disruptions, whether floods, wildfires, earthquakes, or even… global pandemics. This week, Ken Steele sits down (via Zoom) with Dr Jenni Hayman, Chair of Teaching & Learning at Cambrian College (in Sudbury Ontario), to learn more.   The goal of HyFlex course design is to give students access to equivalent learning experiences, whether in-person, synchronous or asynchronous. There are “affordances” to each mode of delivery: in-person and synchronous learning provides immediacy, access to body language and conversational interaction. Asynchronous learning allows students to pace themselves, reflect more, and participate online if they are uncomfortable doing so in class. Giving students choices allows them to accommodate changing life needs, from work or childcare responsibilities to inclement weather or self-isolation. Choice also helps motivate adult learners, empowering them and engaging them more.   Hyflex learning design starts with learning outcomes, with thought to encouraging active learning and authentic assessment. Only then does the HyFlex teacher start to think about technology and delivery modes, and the different activities that can happen in different spaces. How live on-campus students interact with online students depends on the approach of the faculty member, who needs to juggle the needs of three audiences simultaneously. At a minimum, all the students will share an asynchronous LMS shell, and ideally the students will support each other and help each other learn. “Leveraging the learners is where the gold is,” Jenni observes.   The challenge for faculty developing and delivering effective HyFlex courses is (naturally) finding enough time for planning, for the technology learning curve, and for maximizing use of the LMS.  Hyflex takes as least as much time and effort to plan as a fully asynchronous online course. Jenni is really appreciative of the Cambrian faculty members who have been partnering with the Teaching & Learning Innovation Hub, who are open-minded and eager experimenters with pedagogy like HyFlex.   HyFlex is still a relatively new delivery method. In addition to Cambrian, there are 8 US institutions pioneering HyFlex: Ohio State University, University of Denver (University College), University of Michigan, Montana State University Billings, San Francisco State University, University of St Thomas (Minnesota), and Peirce College (Philadelphia), and Delgado Community College (Louisiana). Internationally, HyFlex is also being used at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium.   At Cambrian, 3 of the 4 HyFlex programs are graduate certificates, which appeal both to working Canadians and to international students. (The former find distance learning more flexible, but immigration requirements demand that the latter study in-person on campus.)   For successful HyFlex delivery, institutions need to think through the learner experience and the experimental mode of teaching, and ensure that there are adequate supports and expertise in place to help faculty and students alike. The most important thing we are learning right now, Jenni observes, is “digital red-lining.” Many community college students do not have access at home to broadband internet or modern computers for effective online learning. Many programs and students at community college also need face-to-face, hands-on vocational learning opportunities. The students will need additional support, encouragement and care to be successful online.   Thank you to Cambrian's marketing office, for providing stock video footage to help illustrate this interview.   An even bigger thank you to University College at the University of Denver, for generously allowing us to use excerpts from their video, "Hyflex Lab at University College," to provide a really helpful look at a HyFlex class in action. (Unfortunately there would be no way to film a class on campus at the moment.) Show #566   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 30th August 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Thank you to new PRODUCER RAJ BADWAL   BMW LAUNCHES THE NEW X5 XDRIVE45E With the market launch of the new BMW X5 xDrive45e, the drive portfolio of the Sporty Activity Vehicle (SAV) is now being expanded to include a plug-hybrid system. The second generation of the BMW X5 with electrified drive combines a model-specific in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology with the very latest BMW eDrive technology. With an electrically powered range of 67 to 87 kilometres in the new WLTP test cycle. The combustion engine and electric motor deliver their power to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission of the latest generation and the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive. In this way, the drive torque is transferred to all four wheels when driving on electric power alone as well as when using the combustion engine or indeed both drive units.   Money-saving: Electric driving in urban areas is cheaper than using petrol or diesel if the plug-in hybrid vehicle is charged at home or at the workplace at low cost.   Braking is winning: The battery is charged under braking. In conventional vehicles, braking generates only heat and brake dust.   The best of both worlds: Plug-in hybrids provide electric driving pleasure in urban areas and classical BMW driving pleasure over longer distances.   Better quality of life in cities: By driving on electric power, users can actively contribute to reducing emissions and traffic noise in cities.   PEUGEOT 3008 HYBRID4 DETAILS ANNOUNCED "Peugeot has revealed details of its forthcoming plug-in hybrid - the 3008 GT Hybrid4 - which will feature a range of up to 36 miles on a single charge." reports Chris for Next Green Car:"The new SUV features a 13.2 kWh battery, powering two electric motors, which combine with a 200hp 1.6-litre petrol engine to produce 300hp (220kW). As such, the 0-60mph time is just 5.9 seconds, thanks in part to the all-wheel drive system and eight-speed EAT8 automatic transmission."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8738/peugeot-3008-hybrid4-details-announced/   TOYOTA RAV4 PLUG-IN HYBRID CAUGHT TESTING AND TOWING BY SPY PHOTOGRAPHERS "T add Toyota may be planning to soon add a plug-in hybrid version of the new RAV4. Spy photographers for our sister site, MotorAuthority, recently caught a plug-in hybrid version of the RAV4 out testing on public roads overseas. The company has long been a laggard in the movement to sell plug-in vehicles. The only plug-in model it currently sells in the U.S. is the Prius Prime with 25 miles of electric range." according to Green Car Reports: "If the plug-in hybrid uses the same 8.8-kilowatt-hour battery as the Prius Prime, it would likely get far short of the Prius Prime's 25-mile electric range. Although there might be more packaging potential for fitting a larger battery under the floor of the tall crossover. The closest competitors to the RAV4 today are the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which has a 22-mile electric range, and the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid, which is rated at 26 miles."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1124719_toyota-rav4-plug-in-hybrid-caught-testing-and-towing-by-spy-photographers   TESLA ROLLS OUT KEY FOB SECURITY UPDATE FOR MODEL S TO ADDRESS RISKS OF CLONING "Last year, a Tesla Model S key fob was hacked by a team led by Lennert Wouters of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium (KU Leuven). In the most recent example of their dedication to security, a Bug Bounty find from April this year is now being patched via an over-the-air (OTA) update in 2019.32. The security flaw enabled would-be car thieves to clone a fob in less than two seconds, after which the vehicle could be driven off. Tesla subsequently offered a multi-part fix: PIN to Drive, a software update, and a new fob." Says Teslarati.   “We’ve begun to release an over-the-air software update (part of 2019.32) that addresses this researcher’s findings and allows certain Model S owners to update their key fobs inside their car in less than two minutes. We believe that neither of these options would be possible for any other automaker to release to existing owners, given our unique ability to roll out over-the-air updates that improve the functionality and security of our cars and key fobs,” Tesla said in a statement to Wired.   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-key-fob-cloning-security-update-ota-software/   TESLA SECURES EXEMPTION FROM 10% CHINESE AUTO TAX AFTER MUSK'S VISIT "Tesla CEO Elon Musk just returned from a multi-day trip to China. According to Bloomberg, the CEO struck a deal that will make Tesla exempt from China's 10-percent automotive sales tax." according to sources at InsideEVs: "Traditionally, China's domestic automakers are able to get such a tax exemption, but foreign automakers haven't been so lucky. Essentially, moving forward, all Tesla vehicles sold in China will qualify for the exemption. It's important to note that the country's ministry has verified this information on its website, though Tesla has yet to comment on the situation. "   https://insideevs.com/news/368080/tesla-exempt-china-10-percent-car-tax/   TESLA TO UNLOCK EXTRA RANGE AND FREE SUPERCHARGING FOR CARS IN HURRICANE DORIAN’S PATH "As gas stations in Florida ran out of fuel due to long lines of car owners rushing in to fill up their vehicles before Hurricane Dorian makes landfall, Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla will offer free Supercharging services and unlock more range for vehicles that are on Dorian’s path. By doing so, Tesla will be able to provide some help to owners who are traveling to escape the upcoming storm." writes Simon at Teslarati: "Amidst Florida’s preparations, a number of gas stations across the state have started experiencing shortages as residents flocked to fill up their vehicles. Images and videos from social media show long lines of vehicles lining up to get gas, as well as stations running out of petrol to sell. Gas shortages have hit West Palm Beach the hardest, with 50% of the stations in the area running out of fuel as of 9 a.m. Friday."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-unlocks-free-supercharging-extra-range-hurricane-dorian/   PURCHASE OF 125 NEW ELECTRIC TAXIS WORTH OVER £7MILLION Sherbet London today announced the purchase of 125 new electric taxis from the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC). The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs and the Department of Sociology, Anthropology & Media Studies at AUB Held a Lecture The Politics of Asylum Flows and Syrian Refugees in Turkey: A Question of Inclusion and Exclusion with Sebnem Koser Akcapar Associate Professor of Sociology, Koç University, Istanbul Since 2011, Turkey started to receive the first refugees from Syria fleeing the eruption of violence. Since then, the civil war escalated in Syria and Turkey has become the country hosting the highest number of refugees in the world, with 3 million Syrians, and half a million other nationalities mainly from Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran. There are three important factors that are usually overlooked in the flows of Syrian refugees. The first one is about the diversity of the Syrian refugee population in Turkey. They come from different socio-economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds. The second point has to do with their areas of settlement as 92 percent of all Syrians in Turkey live in urban centers. This literally means that in everyday life Syrian and Turkish nationals are in close contact with each other either in these neighborhoods they reside or in the workplaces. Yet, there are no proper integration regimes in place even after six years of living together. The third one is about their legal status. Although most of them are under temporary protection regime introduced in 2013, they are still not considered as ‘refugees’ due to Turkey’s upholding of the geographical limitation clause in the 1951 Geneva Convention on Refugees. Taking case studies from female-headed households and traditional families with multiple children, from single women to gays, this article will focus on different strategies adopted by Syrian refugees living in various cities in Turkey and the gendered perspective in forced migration. We will also discuss evident racism, exclusion, and social problems experienced in the urban areas. Sebnem Koser Akcapar is currently working as Associate Professor at the Sociology Department, Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey. She is also the founding Director of Center for Asian Studies (KUASIA) at Koç University. After completing her PhD at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium on the role of social networks in facilitating irregular migrant flows and the survival strategies in transit countries, she moved to the USA where she worked as a post-doc visiting fellow for two years at the Institute for the Study of International Migration, Georgetown University.

(Foto: AFP PHOTO/ARMEND NIMANI)
