They use AI to capture a car’s characteristics, like model and color, and can be used as a tool by law enforcement. Local officials said the cameras have helped close more than 60 cases. But opponents of the technology say it can be used for mass surveillance, since the system is linked to a nationwide network. Some residents say they’re concerned the technology could be abused under the Trump Administration and used to target people like immigrants, organizers and those seeking an abortion. Rebecca Hansen-White is a KLCC reporter and has been covering this issue for the outlet. She joins us with details about the system.

Congress is cancelling over $1 billion in pre-approved funding for public broadcasting. The funding cuts threaten local news and educational programming across Pennsylvania. Workers who rely on tips are being advised to pay attention to their taxes this year. A "no tax on tips" provision is part of the federal tax cut and spending bill recently signed into law. Workers who get voluntary tips - not service fees - may benefit from claiming both cash and credit card gratuities on their taxes. Under current law drivers in Pennsylvania are only required to display one license plate, on the rear of their vehicle. But a state lawmaker will soon introduce legislation to change that. Denver's City Council has voted unanimously to end its $666,000 contract with Flock Safety, the company behind the city's automated license plate reader system. The high-tech surveillance tool helped recover 170 stolen cars and led to 300 arrests, aiding investigations into serious crimes like hit-and-runs and homicides. So why end it?City leaders cite growing concerns about federal immigration enforcement, especially the possibility that ICE could use the data to track and deport undocumented immigrants. The move has sparked major controversy — critics say the council is putting immigration politics above public safety, while supporters argue it's about protecting civil liberties in an era of aggressive federal surveillance.
In the name of immigration and border security, Trump and ICE are using local law enforcement's license plate readers to spy on Americans.

Under California law, police departments cannot share license plate data with federal authorities and other out-of-state agencies. But, that law has been routinely violated. In 2024, the San Diego Police Department shared data with federal agencies 62 times, according to the department's annual surveillance report. SDPD stopped sharing data after state Attorney General Rob Bonta's office told the department it was likely violating state law. Meanwhile advocates are voicing their concerns about privacy and surveillance, especially amid President Trump's mass deportation campaign. Today on Midday Edition, we spoke with two reporters covering this investigation at a local and statewide level. Guests: Gustavo Solis, investigative border reporter, KPBS Khari Johnson, technology reporter, CalMatters
