Moto1Pro y EnduroPro Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 18, 2024 13:33

And the winner is… And the winner is: Christophe Ponsson.

Honda and Yamaha used to monopolise the MotoGP title fights. Now they're mocked as having their own ‘Japanese Cup' at the back of the field, as even getting into Q2 feels like a victory given how far they've fallen. All of which must make it tough to be a rider at one of those brands. But when Simon Patterson sat down for exclusive one-on-one interviews with all six Honda and Yamaha riders for The Race MotoGP Podcast, their differing views on their situations shone through. We hear Fabio Quartararo's take on why he stayed at Yamaha even though he often seems to hate its bike, a brutally open Joan Mir on what he's desperate to happen at Honda and Johann Zarco and Luca Marini explaining what they've got out of being part of struggling Honda this year after stepping off frontrunning Ducatis. Plus Alex Rins' take on his fitness battle and Taka Nakagami's reflections on Honda's situation as his full-time racing career ends. Simon, Val Khorounzhiy and Matt Beer share their thoughts on what the sextet had to say, and what the future might hold for all of them. And if you want to hear all six interviews in full and uncut, they're going to be available exclusively to The Race Members' Club. Want more MotoGP podcast content? When asked about his motivation during a race, Usain Bolt exlplained that he imagined all the other runners were giant spiders: 'And then I get super scared.' But it's not just runners that are privy to this trick: riders, too, have their own fantasies that get their mental engines going. For example, Mat would imagine he's a fox. Luca Marini, today, had a very different trick to keep him sane in last place. And we can only speculate what it was that went through Marc Márquez' head as he took control and showed everyone that the legendary Beast is still in a class of his own.Oh yes, this was a race to remember - and Mat and Peter have plenty on their list for today. MotoGP returned home this past weekend with the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix from Jerez, and the fans were treated to an all-time classic between two of the very best riders in the world. Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia had an intense battle for the win, taking advantage of a Jorge Martin crash from the lead in the middle period of the race, and Bagnaia ultimately triumphed with his third straight Jerez victory by just four tenths of a second. On this week's edition of Tank Slappers, Autosport's Lewis Duncan and Motorsport.com's Oriol Puigdemont discuss the intoxicating fight, as well as Martin's role in the action, and where all three of the riders title campaigns could he heading with Le Mans next up in a fortnights time.  Also discussed on the show this week, more struggles for Honda as Luca Marini was the last rider over the line, Johann Zarco getting kicked out of Race Direction after a crash with Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro, and whether Jerez can be a "blue ribbon" race for the sport, like Monaco could be for Formula 1, now both sports are under the Liberty Media umbrella.

Oh boy. We'd be lying to you if we called this one a classic. It wasn't. Sepang brought out the worst of the current era of MotoGP. While we were delighted for Enea Bastianini to take his first win for the factory Ducati team, the distance between the Top 4 was exacerbated by a heavy amount of dirty air. The tyre pressure issue reared its ugly head again as well as five riders break the rule on the limits and Bagnaia loses his practical "joker" after Martin's "illegal" win in Thailand. Is there anything that can be done to fix the problem? And we also talk more about the incoming mess at Repsol Honda. Red Bull will be walking away from the team as a key sponsor at the end of the year, and Luca Marini has now become the favourite for the Marquez replacement seat in 2024. But with Valencia's test now just 13 days away, is it a good look for the most decorated team in the business to have no confirmed lineup and 50 crashes on the season? It's a headache inducing M101 and it starts now!

A special occasion for MotoGP as Le Mans came down with a record weekend attendance of 278,000 to witness the 1,000th MotoGP race. And with it, we saw another dominant weekend from the VR46 Academy's own, Marco Bezzecchi, who survived the chaos around him as Championship Leader Francesco Bagnaia crashed into the Aprilia of Maverick Vinales, and teammate Luca Marini and Alex Marquez collided at the Dunlop Chicane. Through it all, he dominated and we ask... "Why Not Bez?" We also talk deeply on the return of Marc Marquez, and once again, the man is box office. He almost sent his new Kalex chassis to the moon in practise, but it survived, he qualified 2nd, finished 5th in the Sprint and then was challenging Jorge Martin for second until an unfortunate crash with just a lap and a half to go split the room on the man's approach. Has he got it right? Is Kalex giving the Honda camp hope? And we also talk some of our favourite MotoGP Memories as the sport celebrates 1,000 GP's. Well... this was a lot. MotoGP's season opener was always going to be an anticipated affair, but this weekend was all over the place and it was pure unbridled chaos. We had a dodgy Portimao circuit that had Pol Espargaro clatter an unairfenced wall at speed as the gravel refused to slow him down. The result, a horror crash with a lung contusion, a broken mandible and a broken back. That was intense enough, but then title contender Enea Bastianini gets collected by Luca Marini in the sport's first ever sprint race. A great showcase of the sport at its most aggressive... but at what cost? Oh and then Marc Marquez takes all the headlines with a hellacious clatter of Miggy and Martin, injuring all three of them in the process. It's become the headline story as Marquez got a Double Long Lap Penalty that he might not even have to serve... We break it all down in an 80 minute season opening special. MotoGP is back. And it's wild.
