It’s the Bulls Podcast #52 hosted by Marcus Couch and Wyse Black with guest Kenyatta Wright. We’ve got full Bulls vs Celtics Reaction, our State of the #Bulls, Trade Rumors and Game predictions for the coming week. Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. This is where we bring you the latest news, reviews, rants, rumors and opinions on the players, coaches and front office of the Chicago Bulls. And this week we pleased to present regular contributor Kenyatta Wright to the show. We’ve got several topics for this episode. Including: * Bulls vs Celtics Rundown * Bulls Trade Rumors * State of The Bulls * Game predictions for the coming week Bulls vs Celtics Post-Game Tonight the Chicago Bulls took on the Boston Celtics in Boston and got blown out 1XX – XX. The Bulls made it a game throughout most Gordon Hayward and Jayson Tatom padded their lead the whole way through and the Bulls expectedly lost the game. In fact, 6 Celtics scored in double figures on our defense. We wouldn’t stop anyone tonight. And no wonder.. Lauri sat out most of the game. Bulls Trade Rumors Denzel Valentine It may not be the move that propels this team in the right direction, but it’s clear that small forward Denzel Valentine needs to be traded before the deadline this season. It’s not entirely his fault, but both sides seem to want to move on. Valentine played limited minutes this season despite the Bulls being thin at forward due to injuries. He was getting some playing time up until last week when Boylen reportedly told him he was out of the rotation. It’s surely frustrating to get the news you won’t be playing regularly anymore, but Valentine clearly wanted more of an explanation than what he got from Boylen. He spoke to the media before Saturday’s game and said this about the situation [Via Chicago Sun-Times]: “I’m definitely not happy about it. I’m a competitor. I want to play, I want to be productive, I want to help the team win. But that’s out of my control…[Boylen] kind of told me a couple of games ago that I was out of the rotation. He didn’t really say why.” Valentine kind of trailed off after this and didn’t say more about Boylen’s conversation about his spot on the team. Even though Valentine didn’t go scorched Earth with the media on Saturday, it’s clear he’d rather play elsewhere. The Bulls may not be able to get much in return for Valentine, but if they can get someone that would fit into the rotation it’d be an improvement. Even if it was just an end of the bench type of guy, it’d be a slightly better fit. Acquire center Andre Drummond from Detroit While Valentine may or may not be involved in this move, the Bulls could actually pull off a trade for center Andre Drummond. The center for the Detroit Pistons is a player who many were expecting more at this point in his career. Despite Drummond playing in his eighth NBA season this year, he’s only 26 years old. He’s got a player option he could exercise for the 2020-2021 season, but he could be an unrestricted free agent after this season. It would require a lot from the Bulls to acquire Drummond, but reports suggest that the Pistons are determined to trade him before the NBA trade deadline this season. The Bulls could make an offer as it appears several other teams have already. It would be great if we could get Rose in the deal too… Others on the Block: EVERYONE but Lauri, Zach and Coby. State of the Bulls At 14-27 there isn’t much to say about the Bulls except we need a new coach, a new lineup and a new Front Office. It’s a wonder this team has any fans left at all, but we’re still here, with hope in our hearts and prayers in our mind for the team to deliver us from mediocrity. Time will tell what this season turns out to be and what trades may happen in the next few months, The post Bulls Podcast #52 appeared first on Chicago Bullseye.

Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. This is where we bring you the latest news, reviews, rants, rumors and opinions on the players, coaches and front office of the Chicago Bulls. We’ve got several topics for this episode. Including: Bulls vs Pelicans Rundown Bulls 2020 Resolutions Game predictions for the coming week #51 Bulls Players And as you heard in the intro by none other than #51, Ryan Arcidiacono, it’s episode 51 of the Bulls podcast. (We’re stepping things up here in the new year Wyse!). Now we’re getting the actual players to get in on the episode numbers being their jersey numbers. And we will say this is just kind of a teaser by mentioning that, because another player with a number in the 50’s is going to make an appearance on the show soon too.. And it’ll be more than an intro… Beyond Ryan Archidiacono as our featured #51, the Bulls also had a few others that wore that jersey number. In addition to Arch, we have only 2 others to have number 51. Michael Ruffin was the first to wear #51. He was drafted by the Bulls in the 2nd round (3rd pick, 32nd overall) of the 1999 NBA Draft. Next, Lawrence Funderburke wore #51 in the last year of his career as he joined the Bulls briefly in 2005 after missing the previous season due to an Achilles injury. He played in 2 regular season games and 5 playoff games for the Bulls in 2005 before closing out his NBA career as the season ended. Bulls vs Pelicans Post-Game Tonight the Chicago Bulls took on the New Orleans in The Big Easy and lost 123 – 108. The back-and-forth contest wasn't the prettiest game either team will play all year. Both squads struggled to find an offensive rhythm while continually turning the ball over. There was hope at the beginning of the week that Wednesday would serve as rookie phenomenon Zion Williamson's first game of the season, but the team has still been treating its franchise player with an abundance of caution in the wake of his preseason knee injury. Notable Performers: * Zach LaVine, G, Bulls: 32 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds * Kris Dunn, G, Bulls: 15 points, 6 assists, 5 steals, 4 rebounds * Brandon Ingram, SF, Pelicans: 29 points, 11 assists, 8 rebounds * Derrick Favors, PF, Pelicans: 12 points, 9 rebounds * Jaxson Hayes, C, Pelicans: 14 points, 12 rebounds, 4 blocks Our Bulls 2020 Resolutions With the start of the new year, we’re going to present a number of resolutions for the Chicago Bulls to consider and strive for during the remainder of the 2019-2020 season. Zach Lavine to the All Star Game and Dunk Contest Derrick Rose is already coming home to compete in the Skills Contest during All Star weekend. Why not make it a Chicago affair by commiting to the dunk contest? Zach is carroting the all star votes, saying he only wants to enter the contest if he’s also an All Star. There is a lot of competition in the East, and voting is going in all directions, even to DRose. Lauri Markkanen locks in on Beast Mode He’s getting better here as we approach half way into the season, but Lauri is still nowhere near the beast he was projected to be. What do you have to lose Lauri? Tear it up! Get so aggressive that it’s actually offputting to opponents. Play a little dirty. You’ve earned the league currency with the refs that y ou can get away with some of that. Take over games the way Zach does. We need you. Resign Kris Dunn for 3 years, 12 million per year. Where would this put Dunn in the ranks of highest paid point guards? https://www.spotrac. The post Bulls Podcast #51 appeared first on Chicago Bullseye.

Including: Bulls vs Wizards Rundown #Bulls Christmas List – What do we wish for? Game predictions for the coming week Bulls vs Wizards Post-Game The Bulls hit DC in what we hoped would be an easy W against a limping Washington Wizards team with nearly 6 players for the Wizards listed as out of action. An easy win? Not exactly. In fact, we needed until the last minute of OT to pull off the one point victory. Lauri Markkanen led the Bulls with 31 points and 9 rebounds. It was a Sato revenge game of sorts, as he had 17-7-7 in his return to DC. Zach Lavine went 11-11 from the line including 4 nail-biting free throws down the stretch. It’s the Bulls Podcast #48 hosted by Marcus Couch and Wyse Black with guest Kenyatta Wright. We’ve got full Bulls vs Hawks Reaction, Our State of the #Bulls, The Rumor Mill and Game predictions for the coming week. Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. This is where we bring you the latest news, reviews, rants, rumors and opinions on the players, coaches and front office of the Chicago Bulls. We’ve got several topics for this episode. Including: * Bulls vs Hawks Rundown * State of the Bulls: Is Lavine Turning The Corner to Elite Status? * Game predictions for the coming week Bulls vs Hawks Post-Game The Bulls took on the equally miserable Atlanta Hawks at the UC on Wednesday night. Forget about the Jabari Parker Revenge Game Part 2. This one was all Bulls from start to finish. The Bulls won with a 4-year record for team points with a score of 136-102. Zach Lavine seemed to have an answer for critics, and the calls on social media for his trade to another team for seemingly nothing. He’s definitely on a mission and with tonight’s performance of 35 points in just 25 minutes, including 7 threes. This was capped off with Lauri chipping in 22 points in 23 minutes. The offense had 32 assists in a complete victory. The new pairing of Denzel Valentine and Daniel Gafford is appearing to be a formidable duo off the bench for the Bulls with some productive play together. But when it came to the win, Bulls Head Coach Jim Boylen gave a lot of credit to Kris Dunn with the way he played against the Hawks, especially guarding Trae Young. Boylen: “KD is a good player. He's a top-level defender in this league.” State of The Bulls: Coach Boylen: “Zach wants to be great. He's working. His habits are good. I'm happy for him.” Question for the panel: Is Zach Lavine turning the corner, even if the Bulls haven’t found their winning ways yet? Can he be a team leader, an all star and consistently play at an elite NBA level? Last week Wyse and I go every game right except for the Golden State loss. Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. Including: * Bulls vs Grizzlies Rundown * State of the Bulls: Gar on the outs? * Game predictions for the coming week We’ll be right back after this quick time-out. Bulls vs Memphis Grizzlies Post-Game The Bulls took on the short-handed (Without Ja Morant) Memphis Grizzles tonight, leading the game wire to wire and winning with a final score of 106-99 The Bulls finally got their first back to back win, but at the expense of Memphis, a game worse than the Bulls coming into tonight’s action. Zach Lavine led all scorers with 25 and 6 rebounds in 33 minutes Wendell Carter Jr continues to be the double double machine with 16 points and 13 rebounds Lauri Chipped in with 15 points going 4-8 from 3 and 5-9 overall. It’s the Bulls Podcast #46 hosted by Marcus Couch and Wyse Black. We’re covering Zach Lavine’s career-high “answer” to the doubters (and coaches). Is the new Duo now Zack and Coby? Our State of the Bulls and Game predictions for the coming week. Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. This is where we bring you the latest news, reviews, rants, rumors and opinions on the players, coaches and front office of the Chicago Bulls. And joining us once again is sports blogger, podcaster and admin to one of the best Bulls FB groups there is, it’s Kenyatta Wright! We’ve got several topics for this episode. Including: What a difference 24 hours makes State of the Bulls: Are we too hard on the team? Game predictions for the coming week Bulls win the game of the year What an incredible 24 hours in Chicago Bulls team history. Let’s break this all down for you. Friday night, the Bulls were flat out punched in the face by Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat. The 116-108 score was nowhere near the reality of the game. The Bulls never had a chance against the Heat. The Bulls played absolutely awful, already down 34-16 in the first quarter. Including a scoreless streak of nearly 10 minutes to start the game. Zach Lavine was visibly frustrated after the game. His initial comment was “We're all out of rhythm and we're trying to find it. We're obviously trying to win. I think we're a really good team. We have some things we have to continue to get better at. We're just not there yet.” Jim Boylen chopped his players off at the knees, pulling Zach Lavine out early in the 4th. When asked about it in his post-game press conference, Boylen stated “I just pulled him. Not combative. Guys know. Zach LaVine and Lauri Markkanen and our starters got to play better for us to become what we can become. That's how it works,” Boylen told reporters. “I want him to be a two-way player. That's what I want him to be.” LaVine said he thought he was used as a scapegoat for the Bulls' struggles. After a reporter told Lavine what Boylen said, he replied “I guess I was to blame for it. I’ve gotten pulled early before by him. I guess that’s just his thing to do,” LaVine said. “I have to take it in stride. I’m not the coach. What did he say I got pulled for?” Zach LaVine says he senses a lack of trust from coach Jim Boylen after the guard was temporarily pulled in the first quarter of Friday's loss to the Miami Heat. “I'm trying my best, I'll say that,” LaVine told Yahoo Sports “I'm playing my minutes and trying to do the best I can do. It's tough, especially when you're in a rut. If he doesn't trust me, it's hard to trust someone who doesn't trust you.” The Next Game – Bulls vs Charlotte One night after questioning his relationship with coach Jim Boylen, the Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine came through with a big game. LaVine had a career-high 49 points, including the winning 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to give the Bulls a 116-115 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night. It was undoubtedly the game of the year. I watched nearly every NBA game from every single team this season. There’s been nothing like this so far this year, and there’s not been a last-minute comeback finish like this for the Bulls in years. After the game, Zach Lavine was all smiles. We talk about revenge games a lot, but it’s usually revenge against a team you previously played for. This was something completely new. A revenge game against your own coach and what he said not even 24 hours earlier. Coby White's 12 made field goals in the game were the most by a Bulls rookie in a single game since Derrick Rose did it in 2009. At one point in the game, Lavine turned to Coby and said: “It’s you and me..”. This may be the start of the desperately needed DUO that we’ve been begging fo... It’s the Bulls Podcast #45 hosted by Marcus Couch and Wyse Black. We’re covering Coby White Craziness, Are we contenders yet? The Bulls are still a horrible team. Bulls Player Injuries begin to mount, what will be the effect? Plus our Predictions for the upcoming week. Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. This is where we bring you the latest news, reviews, rants, rumors and opinions on the players, coaches and front office of the Chicago Bulls. We’ve got several topics for this episode. Including: Coby White’s Record-Setting Crazy Night Bulls Player Injuries begin to mount, what will be the effect? Are we contenders yet? The Bulls are still a horrible team. Game predictions for the coming week In celebration of Bulls Podcast Episode #45, we celebrate the number #45 throughout Bulls History: Scott Lloyd 1979, Ed Nealy 1989-1993 * Michael Jordan 1995 Paul Shirley 2004, Luke Schenscher 2006, Rasual Butler 2011, * Denzel Valentine 2017-2020 (In the League on Layaway) Before I forget I also want to say hello to the newest listener to the Bulls Podcast, Kristin Ledlow who does reporting for TNT and is an outstanding student of the game. She just started up a new podcast with Candace Parker called Ledlow & Parker that you should definitely check out to get a really fun take on a lot of the inside NBA talk. They are both great and it’s a really fun show to listen to. COBY! COBY! COBY! What an incredible night we all got to witness on Tuesday 11/12 when Coby White set and NBA Rookie and Chicago Bulls record by hitting 7 3’s in the 4th quarter to seal the win, and seal Coby’s legend in Chicago history. It was one of the most exciting individual performances we’ve seen in the last few years as Bulls fans. Something truly worth getting excited about. With Coby’s College Coach, Roy Williams in attendance, Coby once again re-ignited his Sub-Zero attitude, shooting a cold-hearted 7 for 11 from three and ending the night with 27 points. One of the highlights was seeing Ryan Arcidiacono turn around to raise his hands in the air before the ball even made it halfway to the hoop. He knew it was going in the whole time. When asked about it, Arch said, “ Jim Boylen on Coby White's historic 4th Quarter: “We honored what he was doing – we kept feeding him, we kept getting him, kept finding him. And I thought that group did a hell of a job. Obviously, he was terrific, and we helped him be that way, which is what I think good teams do.” After the game, Wendell Carter Jr was once again vocal about being a leader within the team. It appears as if WCJ is emerging as the true alpha of this team now.. Wendell Carter Jr. said, “We see exactly what we're capable of doing. So now, that's my expectation — nothing lower than that. Whenever that doesn't happen, I've found my voice on this team where I can talk to each individual player in a manner where they will understand.” WCJ also says he would like to find something to juice the #Bulls up every game if he can. That was part of his motivation in vowing that Bobby Portis wouldn’t go off on the Bulls again. Injuries are taking their toll early in the season The injuries seem to be mounting up. Zach turned an ankle and is probable for the Bucks game on Thursday. Otto Porter Jr is still out of action with his foot injury and listed as day-to-day, though is already ruled out of action in the Milwaukee game. Cristiano Felicio is suffering the worst injury of all with a broken right wrist. The post Bulls Podcast #45 appeared first on Chicago Bullseye.

Including: Bulls Say Goodbye to Tommy Edwards Does Coach Boylen Care? Valentine and Gafford Head to the G League to join Bol Bol. Game predictions for the coming week In celebration of Bulls Podcast Episode #44, we celebrate the number #44 throughout Bulls History Paul Ruffner 1971, Tom Kropp 1977, Andre Wakefield 1979, Quintin Dailey 1983-1986, Corie Blount 1994-1995, Mario Bennett 1999, Dalibor Bagarić 2001-2002, Trenton Hassell 2003, Adrian Griffin 2005-2008, Brandon Sampson 2019 and the most prominent in our hearts and minds is #44, Nikola Mirotic. He was the three point sensation that never was. We heralded his arrival in Chicago as the second coming of Ray Allen. Unfortunately he played with the court vision of Ray Charles instead. Niko is out of the NBA now, making headlines this past offseason season by turning down over 30 Million to instead return to Europe and be done with the league forever. Tommy Edwards Steps Down as Bulls PA Announcer and calls it a Career A number of generations of fans have had the opportunity to hear his voice during games at the Chicago Stadium and the United Center. But after three different stints with the team, Tommy Edwards has decided to step away from the mic. The public address announcer said on Thursday that this coming Saturday’s Bulls game against the Rockets will be his final at the United Center, deciding to retire after 25 years of work for the team. “My time with the Bulls has been a dream come true, and I feel so fortunate to have spent a total of 25 seasons with this iconic franchise,” said Edwards in a statement released by the team. “I want to extend my sincere thanks to Jerry and Michael Reinsdorf, the entire Bulls organization and the world’s greatest fans for their unwavering support. I will forever be a Bulls fan.” Edwards was behind the mic for games at Chicago Stadium from 1976-1981 and then again from 1983-1990. Sixteen years later, Edwards returned to the team to be the PA for games at the United Center and continuing in that role for 13 years. In total, Edwards was behind the mic for over 1,000 games. Now secretly, and not so secretly if you follow me on social, I want RAY CLAY to resume his former role as the Bulls PA Announcer. For those of you new to the show that don’t know who Ray Clay is, Let me refresh Your Memory.. Beyond being the voice of the Bulls throughout the Jordan Championship years, he’s also the guy you hear at the beginning and end of The Bulls Podcast. He was gracious enough to do that intro for us and we are keeping it forever. So if you’re on social, Tweet, IG, whatever.. Tell the Bull that you want Ray Clay to come back. We need that energy again. Energize the fans and the fans energize the players. It’s all full circle. State of The Bulls: Coach Boylen Doesn’t Care When we started the year. Things were looking really great for the team. It seemed like we had all of the pieces to do a substantial run into the playoffs this year. That was the goal that Gar/Pax, Coach Jim Boylen and the rest of the team repeated over and over. “Our Goal is to make the playoffs this year and we think we can do it..” Well, things haven’t worked out so far this year. The excuse that Boylen doesn’t have all of his players healthy at the same time, is not the case this year. The post Bulls Podcast #44 appeared first on Chicago Bullseye.
It’s the Chicago Bulls Podcast 43 hosted by Marcus Couch and Wyse Black. We’re covering the Bulls loss to the Cavs, Way Too Early ROY Odds and predictions for the upcoming week. Welcome to the Bulls Podcast, coming to you from BullsPodcast.com. This is where we bring you the latest news, reviews, rants, rumors and opinions on the players, coaches and front office of the Chicago Bulls. We’ve got several topics for this episode. Including: Bulls vs Cavs Recap Way too early Rookie of The Year Odds Game predictions for the coming week In celebration of Bulls Podcast Episode #43, we celebrate another #43.. Corie Blount, who wore #43. As a Bull he played 4 seasons total, playing in 231games total. June 30, 1993: Drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1st round (25th pick) of the1993 NBA Draft. June 30, 1995: Sold by the Chicago Bulls to the Los Angeles Lakers. July 31, 2002: Signed as a free agent with the Chicago Bulls. March 2, 2004: Waived by the Chicago Bulls. Initially drafted for his athleticism, Blount developed a reliable midrange jumpshot over the course of his career, and he retired in 2004 with 2,287 career points and 2,690 career rebounds. He also appeared as himself in the 1996 film Eddie. Bulls vs Cavs Recap The Bulls played the Cleveland Cavs tonight. The Bulls XXX the game by the score of 117 to 111. It seemed to be the Tristan Thompson vs Otto Porter show for the first half. The Bulls maintained a steady 8-10 point lead and let the Cavs get back right before halftime. The 3rd quarter featured a lot more back and forth, with the Bulls and Cavs trading leads on several series and exchanges. In the 4th, Tristan Thompson took over for the Bulls/Cavs and sealed the game down the final 2-minute stretch, closing out the game with 23 points 10 rebounds, 5 blocks. Kevin Love had 17 points, 20 rebounds and 6 assists for the Cavs. For the Bulls it seems like we’re calling the storage armory and getting out the TANK.. ALREADY. Lauri Markkanen had 16 points and 8 rebounds Otto Porter Jr had 15 points 5 rebounds and 3 assists and for a long stretch seemed like he was the only Bull really trying hard out there. Thad Young played well in the first 3 quarters but became a liability down the stretch. What is Luke Kornet doing Granted he had 9 points on 4-6 shooting, but just 2 rebounds for a 7 foot 1 guy? Coby White had only 8 points in 20 minutes on the floor. Shooting just 3 for 12 and only 1 assists. Team Performance The Bulls are -57 rebounding through 5 games, the second-worst rebounding margin through 5 games in the last 7 NBA seasons Tomas Satoransky and Kris Dunn are a combined 16-of-51 overall and 2-of-16 from 3 to start the season. Lauri seems to be less and less of a driving playmaker in the games this season. Zach said he was mad that they were pissing away games and that they should have a flipped record of 3-1 (yesterday) right now.. And he goes out and basically shits the bed in Cleveland on 6-14 shooting, no rebounds and 2 assists. Way too early Rookie of The Year Odds There is an updated odds card already making the rounds for Rookie of the Year candidates, or at least according to who Las Vegas thinks it will be. Coby White is actually 4th on the list of favorites, with Zion right above him at #3 with Ja Morant the #2 favorite to take rookie of the year. The top pick of the bookies for ROY this year is NY Knick Duke standout RJ Barrett. So Right now with White at #4 with +700, I would be able to go to Vegas and lay down $100. If Coby wins it, I win $700. Vegas must have hacked into the Pelican’s front office or at least Zion’s doctor. If we were to lay down $100 on Zion, we would take home $400 if he won it. NO ONE would have guessed this a month ago. We were talking about the next LeBron. The post Bulls Podcast #43 appeared first on Chicago Bullseye.

We all want more listeners. We feel we have tried everything (have we?) and one option that all the "big" shows seem to have in common is they are part of a Podcast Network. Many of these require large amounts of download that your show may not achieve. You may be thinking of starting your own Podcast Network. I've interviewed some friends of mine recently (and some over the years) about their networks and assembled all that information into this episode. If creating a podcast network is not for you (it is a lot of work) you may be thinking that joining a network is a better choice. I share some things you might consider before joining. Podcast Network Interviews: Glen Hebbert - Horse Radio Network Daniel J Lewis - Noodle.mx Network Mignon Fogarty - Quick and Dirty Tips Christopher Brian Jones - Trek.fm Stephen Jondrew - Gonna Geek Chris Nesi - Education Podcast Network So You Want to Start Your Own Podcast Network 5:10 You need to be able to answer the question, "Why do you want to start a podcast" There are two type of networks. One is run as a business, and the other is focused more on cross-promotion (or a mixture of both). 14: 40 A network where the shows are around a single niche (Horses, hiking, dancing, education, microbrews, etc) are easier to monetize, easier to optimize on the web. Naming your network should be obvious. A cryptic name will slow the growth of your network. 16:17 Create two logos (square and rectangle) and keep it simple. Make sure it looks good small, or huge. Don't make the logo yourself unless you're a designer. Check out podcastdesigns.com (tell them the School of Podcasting sent you) and there are other services like Kappa 99, 99 Designs, where many artists create your artwork and you select the best. I recently used Kappa99 for my Six Shooter podcast and used their "one time jobs" (under the More menu) to have my artwork done for $49. 20: 40 Define what your podcast network's purpose is. Define what your network will do for the members of the network. 23:00 How to add a show to your network. Start off with a general show, and then expand out and niche out. Have your criteria in place to help you decide if a podcast fits. For example, Daniel J Lewis only wants clean shows on his network. 26:58 How to add hosts to your network. Glenn and Christopher audition their hosts by bringing them on the podcasts as a guest. Most hosts don't want to work with a brand new show as you are not bringing anything to the network ( they are looking for a win-win situation). 34:15 Create a contract between the network and the hosts. This defines what is expected, how people get paid, what will get you fired, and every other situation you can think of that may happen. By having these (at times) awkward conversations you avoid really awkward conversations in the future. When people know what will happen if they want to leave, they can plan accordingly, and expectations are set, and you can go through that situation without sacrificing the personal relationship because the business relationship didn't work. 40:36 Paying hosts a percentage of the advertisement (in some cases based on downloads) is a nightmare you want to avoid. Glenn pays his hosts a flat rate. Daniel also bills primarily using a flate rate. 43:26 Glenn has it in his contract that he can edit a show if they say something offensive that does not fit the network's brand. 44:33 Another way to pay the hosts is through a profit sharing program which allows them to keep a larger amount of advertisements that they bring to the network. 46:50 The more shows you add, the more work is involved chasing advertisers, doing paperwork, editing shows. 48:30 If you have too diverse a set of shows, you won't be able to sell ads across your entire network. 50:30 How do you handle the website? Does each show have its own website? Are all the shows under one website? Who is in charge of updating it and managing the backend? 54:54 The positive side of having a network for building community, focusing efforts, and having sponsors that keep coming back. 57:55 Harnessing the power of your audience. 59:45 The benefit to the podcast listener 1:02:38 A Network can be as simple as a page that shows all of your podcasts (such as powerofpodcasting.com ) 1:03:51 The Bolden theme from Second Line themes is built for a network. Marcus Couch of the Bulls Podcast uses it for his new Bulls network see http://Bulls.fm He used the WP-all import plugin and has it automatically pulling in everyone’s show by checking the feeds every hour automated. Should I Join a Podcast Network? 01:04:07 Here are Some Things to Consider When Pondering Joining a Podcast Network: Is your show a good fit. In the same way that if you want to be a guest on a show YOU NEED TO DO SOME HOMEWORK Are they taking submissions Do you have to change media hosts? You might lose your stats... Do you have to redirect your feed? Can you take your feed with you... Find someone on the network and ask them about before and after numbers? Ask them for the details if you bring a sponsor of your own. Is part of the bonus an advertisement rotated on the site? Really? Is the platform built on a non-free service? Does being on a network help? When cross-promotion is done right sure. I know personally, I've heard or pre-rolls on other shows and never been inspired to check them out. If the host says something that proves they listen, and gives it a stamp of approval, I might. Conclusion: Podcast networks that are run like a business are a lot of work When all of the shows are of the same niche, it helps the network grow faster and may be easier to monetize Get all the details, all the scenarios in writing takes some planning, and strategic thinking for the future, but can save you headaches down the line. If your goal is sponsorship, you better brush up on your selling skills. Don't create your own logo unless you are a graphic designer. Make sure you have a good fit if you are bringing on a new host, or joining a new network. Comments on the Bulls Podcast? 888-563-3228 Description Get all the latest Chicago Bulls news, reviews, post-game analysis and player rumors on the Bulls Podcast. Hosted by Marcus Couch and Wyse Black. Website http://bullspodcast.com/ Opinion I really liked the production and the actual Chicago Bulls announcer is a nice touch. The energy is awesome. I liked how you introduce the hosts. This episode was over an hour and you have a pretty extensive table of contents. At one point you bring on a female guest, and her audio seemed to have too much bass, and was hard to hear over the music. I'm not sure if you could consolidate the topics in your table of content into what type of stories (so instead of talking about so and so along with whoever, consolidate into "the latest player updates." All in all the show has a great energy and sounds like this is the place to get your news on the Chicago bulls. Today we are looking at not taking no for an answer. We are looking at trying new strategies for old problems. My friend Marcus Couch heard "No" multiple times every year when he tried to start a Chicago Bulls fan cast. He didn't give up. He tried and tried again. We hear his story of asking a sponsor to help. We all want more subscribers, will using a text tool like slicktext.com help by putting your subscription one click away? Speaking of new strategies, should you put together a focus group to see if your show is headed in the right direction? All of this is covered in this episode 632 of the School of Podcasting Sponsor: Podcast Engineering School 1:35 Podcast Engineering School – next semester starts September 18th and runs through October 30th. He now lives in California where writes, coaches, and podcasts (see Marcus Couach.com ). Marcus wanted to do THE OFFICIAL FAN podcast for the Chicago Bulls. He's had the domain bulllspodcasts.com for years. He asked the team, and they said "No." He asked the next year and the year after that. This went on a while. Marcus reached out to one of the Bulls Sponsors. Marcus was now part of the Sponsor's package. He turned a No, into a yes. He saw where one way was blocked, and kept looking for another path. He also used the strategy that bands do when trying to find a band member, he went to YouTube and found someone who had an audience on YouTube talking about the bulls. Marcus had the podcasting knowledge, a sponsor, and a passion, and his co-host Wyse Black had an audience. The two worked out a deal and now have launched the podcast with a sponsor, fan giveaways, and an audience. Check it out at www.bullspodcast.com Check out Marcus on his other podcasts: WordPress Plugins A to Z WordPress Weekly Industry Night Question of the Month 22:49 Have you attended a podcasting event? Was it worth it? I need the answer by 8/24 Go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/contact if you use email, please use the subject line, "August Question." Why Your Podcast Needs a Focus Group 24:45 Rob Walch often uses this story of Marketing your podcast and how marketing will not save bad content (The Lone Ranger vs The Sixth Sense movies). So I decided to dig in deeper. Dave's equation for more listeners is The value in an episode multiplied by the amount of smart promotion = Total Downloads In a nutshell, it boils down to this. 1. Identify who your audience is 2. Determine what content they want to hear. 3. Create content that will inspire them to tell a friend (in other words, its good) 4. Go to where your target audience is 5. Make friends with them, and bring value to every conversation, listen for ideas for future episodes. 6. Then tell them about your show My advice before you start promoting it is to get someone who is not named Mom to listen to your show. These should be your target audience. You need people who will tell you if it’s good, or it’s not. The best marketing won’t save bad content (Think American Idol winners, think The Lone Ranger movie with Johnny Depp). The Lone Ranger According to Wikipedia, “The film grossed $260.5 million worldwide against an estimated $225–250 million production budget and an additional $150 million marketing costs. That means it lost approximately $10 million. On the other hand, great content will inspire word of mouth (Think the Sixth Sense). The Sixth Sense - per Wikipedia The film had a production budget of approximately $40 million (plus $25 million for prints and advertising). It grossed $26.6 million in its opening weekend and spent five weeks as the No. 1 film at the U.S. box office. It earned $293,506,292 in the United States and a worldwide gross of $672,806,292, ranking it 35th on the list of box-office money earners in the U.S. as of April 2010. Box Office Mojo estimates that the film sold over 57.5 million tickets in the US. In the United Kingdom, it was given at first a limited release at 9 screens and entered at No. 8 before climbing up to No. 1 the next week with 430 theaters playing the film. Why was this so successful? Because everyone who saw the Sixth sense told someone about it. They said, "You Must See This move." People who saw the Lone Ranger (myself included in this one) told their friends to NOT go see that movie. Before you go promoting it, you might want to make sure your content is going to resonate with your audience. Promoting a show that brings no value will only allow the world to know how your show should be avoided sooner than later. Get Some Coaching If you want an unbiased opinion, I have two options. I can go over your show into on the Podcast Rodeo Show, or myself and Erik K Johnson an go over your entire podcast on the Podcast Review Show. I'm back from podcast movement, and I had a blast. I also have insights from one of the hardest assignments I've done in a long time. My Impression of Podcast Movement 2017 Nothing cooler than being picked up at that airport by fellow podcasters Marcus Couch from WordPress Plugins A to Z. We haven't seen each other face to face in about 10 years. We cranked some cool metal on the way to the Marriot and it was like old times. Then I get the then Marriot and I get to meet my co-host Jim Collison from the Average Guy network, and I go over to his table and there sits the one and only Steve Stewart and Mike Dell. So for me, the Summar Camp aspect of Podcast Movement is in full effect. The coolest line I heard all week was relayed by Paul Colligan (another person' I've known for 10+ years) and it came from a Dan Klass session. Dan (who is a former comedian) shared how often at comedy clubs you will have multiple comedians perform in an evening - and yet they all use the same microphone. The point? It's not about the tech. I roomed with Erik K Johnson from podcasttalentcoach.com, and he had stated that it would be awesome if he could meet a web developer who needed help with his podcast, as he was a podcast consultant who needed help with his website. I get into the elevator, introduce myself to everyone in the elevator and it turns out that one of the people is a web designer thinking of starting a podcast. When we get out of the elevator, on of the first people who see is Erik. I felt like I was in a Christmas movie and it was going to start to snow. I saw Harry Durran from Podcast Junkies and Dr. Ryan Gray who has given up his practice to do podcasting full time and Harry introduces me to Natalie Jennings who happens to be taking head shots at a reasonable price. She shows me a few samples of people, and I'm hooked. I can't wait to see how they turn out. The few peaks I saw of what she did was amazing. See her at http://www.nataliechampajennings.com/ I found out in Paul Colligan's session that if you are in Google Play Music, you are also on the Google Home portable audio speaker. I also know of a cool double secret project that is going to make recording double-enders via a browser very cool. I was on a panel with Ray Ortega, Daniel J. Lewis, and Addy Saucedo on what is inside an RSS. This was an insanely nerdy topic, but due to the recent Apple announcements we had some interested parties and I thought we pulled it off well. The bonus is I got to hang out with some cool friends. The Coolest Thing I Saw At Podcast Movement 2017 While there were tons of great sessions at PM17, as a vendor (I work for Libsyn.com - use the coupon code sopfree to get a free month) I don't get to attend any sessions. I did see something that was way cool. I met Alissa Daire of the Maximize Your Strengths show. I see her the first night, and she is in a group of people and we get talking about Strengths Finder, and she becomes a ping pong ball bouncing off the ceiling with energy. She's super nice, and it was great to catch up with her as I had met her last year. The next night, I'm standing at the Luau event, and here she comes. She explains how "I'm done." She's tired (as many people are), and she is considerably less energetic. Pat Flynn walks over, he's very witty and a super nice guy. Then the subject changes to strengths finder results, and it was like watching a time release video of a flower blooming. Her energy came back, her smile came back, her body language completely changed. It was amazing to watch. I saw this a few more times. It's late, and people have had a few adult beverages, then I ask them about their show, and BOOM, the body language picks up, the eyes are open a bit wider, the voice is a little louder. Later, Paris from Gamertag Radio got star struck when Cara Santa Maria from the Skeptics Guide to the Universe walks by. I offered to go bring her over. He got shy, so I did my best Steve Austin (the six million dollar man, not the wrestler) imitation across the showroom floor. I had no idea she was an Emmy Award winning journalist. I bring her over and embarrass Paris. Danny Peña is there, Jim Collison is there, and the minute Paris explained that he really did listen to her show the body language changed. For me, I think of it as being in your "first impression" mode and then finding out that you're among family. For the Best Content - Put a Time Frame On it I spoke about how I got lucky to be able to induct Dan Klass from the Bitterest Pill into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. The presentation should last three minutes. I had hoped that three minutes would be longer than I thought. I wrote out my first draft. It had some bits about history and podcasting in 2005. It had examples of how the show made me feel. I made a joke about how the more I talk about his show, the more I sound like a stalker. I listed his accomplishments. I started the stopwatch and went into the presentation, about half what through I glanced at my phone and I was already at 5 and a half minutes. Oh boy...... What Was the Purpose of This Presentation? I had to go back and ask myself, what was the purpose of this presentation? The purpose was for the person sitting in row 7 who had been podcasting since 2015 and had no idea who Dan Klass was. It wasn't about me. It wasn't about being funny. I was about answering the question, "Why is Dan Klass in the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame." For me, this was a big opportunity, on a big stage, and I didn't want to mess it up for myself, or Dan. It was time to edit. Anything about me went out the door. The history lesson of iriver portable players and synchronization cables went up in smoke. Most of the stories I had about Dan might not go over if you didn't listen to his show. Only the things that HAD to be said would stay. I listed his accomplishments. I thought of the funniest thing I had heard on his show (he referred to his two-year-old daughter as Princess Tirade for quite some time), and the most memorable episode (of ALL podcasting) is episode 102 Mass Murder where he talks about what it's like when your Uncle is murdered, and you're walking past TV cameras escorting your mother to the funeral. It's at the end, I highly suggest you listen to it. I had pointed out that Dan was one of the first to try premium podcasting (this was YEARS before Patreon) and it didn't work well. That was negative, so I just pointed out that he was a pioneer and not afraid to try new things. I HAD TO POINT OUT, that Dan had been sharing stories a DECADE before Serial was on the scene. Dan was creating engaging stories in a box in his garage, and he did it without a team of 19 people. That had to stay. To make it entertaining, I thought of throwing in some old Baptist preacher tricks of getting people to repeat words. This came to me in the shower. It would make me stand out, but I was deeply worried about being too entertaining (again, this was all about Dan). Looking back, that was a dumb thought (you're not going to outshine Dan Klass). Just Because There Are No Time Limits in Podcasting Doesn't Mean There Shouldn't Be To fine tune my presentation I had to: Identify my audience Identify the purpose Make it entertaining I know some of us want to record it and publish it. I truly, always believe a podcast can benefit from editing. This is especially true if you are doing interviews. Because of My Podcast Devin Caroll Devin from the Big Picture Retirement podcast shares how he didn't' want to start a podcast but sure is glad he did. He just released episode 34, and his co-host has already billed $10,000, and Devin has billed $6,000 and has a client who will bring in $20,000. I bet you might think, they have a huge audience, right? Nope, according to Devin, they are averaging 534 downloads an episode. Save yourself hours of time and effort listen now to WordPress Plugins from A to Z. See their website www.pluginsatoz.com Opinion:I like the tease at the beginning of the show so people can decide if they want to listen. I know exactly what the show is about and who the target audience is. You then have us sit through a weather report, and a whole lot of asking for stuff. If you follow Gary V's philosophy you give first then take. If a new person comes to your show, you are asking for a review and I would ask, "a review of what? that person hasn't heard any real content yet." Also, rating and reviews help in social proof but not in rankings in iTunes is a crap shoot, and for the most part don't boost downloads (at least in the thousands that people think they would). You mentioned the No Agenda Show, they do their pimping in the middle of the show. They also make their donation segment entertaining (John and his pronunciations, and Jingles). You seem apologetic to self-promote. Change that around and use your experience to introduce yourselves. I"m John and I've been providing Emergency Wordpress support for over X years. Find me at (website). I'm Marcus Couch the editor of .... You guys always do a good job at the end with the "Fine me at " mentions. Use this in the intro to answer the new listener's question, "Why should I listen to these guys." Just make it quick and focused (we don't need the whole resume).Remember the goal is to get to the content. A new listener doesn't really care about you until you give them good content. You might consider moving some of your segments (asking for donations, asking for plugins to review) and work them in between the plugins. Currently, I fast forward through the first 5 minutes of your show until I hear the music alerting me the real show is going to start. If you got to the plugins, and the intertwined the spots in between the plugins (in a focused, straight to the point way) I think people would sit through the spots knowing that another plugin was around the corner. Realize the people who have been skipping the beginning of your show will not like this new format (as you've removed the option to skip the plugs and asks...)BONUSYour show is listed twice in iTunes with both listings pointing at the same feed (I didn't know that was even possible). This might end up hurting your rankings as you are competing against yourself. The listing in iTunes that has a spot for your website has your feed there (so people who click on website to go to your website are probably going to get a face full of code). So instead of driving traffic to your website, your potentially confusing your audienceYour audio has a high pitched noise in it (more than likely a ground loop). I heard it in my headphones, but probably not a huge deal if I was listening in a car. Wrap UpThis is different, as I've listened to this show for years. I always fast forward through the intro as I tune in for the plugins. It's hard as you are putting alot of time into it, and you need some ROI for your time. Podcast Movement was a great success as all of the previous events. WOW. The one thing different this year was I was working for Libsyn. I spent pretty much three days talking from about 7 in the morning to somewhere between midnight and 2 AM talking loudly. Consequently, my voice is still kind of raspy today. I had originally planned on playing the talk I did, but to be honest the audio has so much room noise it's unusable. Instead I want to share some quick insights from Podcast Movement. Bring a back pack. - I was using a laptop case and my shoulders still hurting. If you want to meet someone, you need to set this up in advance. Don't be afraid to try things. I did a Q&A. This was new at PM16, and it was in response to customer feedback. I thought my session went well, and I enjoyed not having to working on a bunch of slides. Be Careful Extending Your Launch I love Giordono's Pizza. Every time I go to Chicago I have to get some. It's super-duper thick, and it's quite yummy. They look small, but one piece will fill you up. We went one night, as did apparently the entire event. There was a 90 minute wait. We found out that we could order out pizza and they could start making it, and then (hopefully) by the time we got to our table, the pizza could be ready. That sounded like a great plan. The problem is what we were told and what was reality were very different. We got to our table and instead of having the pizza soon, we waited another 90 minutes. So all in all we waited three hours for food. Was the pizza good? Absolutely, but did it make me roll my eyes back into my head and make me go "oooooh this is soooooo good..." like the other times I've enjoy ed their pizza? No. Why? I had been telling people how good it was. That is half the fun of going there is to take someone who has never had their pizza, and watch their face. But after three hours of waiting, unless they threw in a Heil PR40, I don't think the pizza would've lived up to the hype. So if you are a person who is getting ready and setting up your auto responder, your squeeze page, your sales funnel, etc. meanwhile you had already told your audience that you would be launching a podcast "soon," by the time it arrives the wait may take away from the over-all experience. With this in mind, be careful when you announce your podcast is coming. You might want to wait until you have a finished episode ready to go. You might want to wait until your show is approved in iTunes, Google Play Music, Stitcher, etc. New and Noteworthy Update I ran into Nicole of the BBRshow.com (Business Building Rock Stars). If you count from the top she is currently #81 in "New and Noteworthy" and said she doesn't seem to be getting any major push from this position. She said she is seeing slow steady growth. This segment was recorded using nothing but my phone. What it Would've Sounded Like if I had Won an Award I was honored to be nominated in the Technology category and then the PEOPLE'S CHOICE! (but didn't win either). I had a speech in case I won. It went a little something like this: Look, I don’t win very often, so I’m going all out on this. OK? I would like to thank: GOD My listeners. Without you I am nothing. To the members of the School of Podcasting. Thanks for picking me as your coach. It has been a pleasure serving you. A special shout out to the Ask the Podcast Coach chat room. You folks truly are neat. Thanks to the academy, and to my fellow nominees. It was great to be nominated with you (I’ve been nominated for 8 different awards, and I gotta say it is nice to win). To my co-hosts I’ve have over the years. Rob Walch, Paul Colligan, Gary Lealand, Erik K Johnson, Jim Collison, and of course my tripod brothers Daniel J Lewis and Ray Ortega. Gentlemen thanks for being great co-host and in some cases competition, but thanks for being even better friends. To libsyn for hosting all of my files without a glitch, and thanks for the job while I’m at it. Use the coupon code sopfree to get a free month. Cmon, you know I had to go there. This is really overwhelming. Ask my ex-wife and she will tell you I don’t handle compliments well. I do want to thank some people, Daniel J Lewis, Marcus Couch, Erik K Johnson, and Steve Stewart who called me during my divorce just to make sure I was OK. As I got divorced 10 days before Christmas, Steve took time out his family time, and called me on Christmas day. I know we like to talk CPM advertising, and income reports, but when you’re spending Christmas with your cat that phone call was worth a million dollars. Two more quick points. If you’re almost ready to launch your podcast, but you’re waiting on that one thing LAUNCH. An almost perfect podcast will impact 100% more people than the one that never makes off your hard drive. Lastly, people ask me why I have Jeremiah 29:11 on my website. Well in 2015 I got divorced. Shortly thereafter I was laid off. I was estranged from my family due to some things my ex-wife had said. It was a dark place. I moved back to my home city of Akron where I now have a peaceful house. I called some friends and got a job at Libsyn. After 7 years of not talking to my brother, that bridge has been restored. So when things get dark, remember Jeremiah 29:11 it goes a little something like this. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Tonight I stand here with a trophy in my hand and say this is why I have Jeremiah 29:11 on my website because it's true. Answering Audience Questions Is a podcast a good way to promote a multi-level marketing (MLM) business? If your sole goal of a podcast is to generate income, you need to realize a few things: Nobody tunes into an infomercial on purpose (usually it's that there is nothing else on) You make money from your podcast by delivering value. This helps people like you because you're helpful. When people trust you, they may purchase something you recommend or provide. It takes time to develop the relationship between you and your audience. So whatever your product is, your industry, if you have tips on running that business, using that product, news about that industry, then it might be helpful. Figure out who your target audience is and make the information that they want to consume. Starting a Podcast With My Child Dave, On the second leg of a trip home from VT to TN, I spent 8 hours in the car listening to your voice yesterday. And enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks for the great content! I've been listening to podcasts for years and am thinking of starting one with my 11 year old son. We have a concept and I'm going to put him through the paces of evaluating and starting a business (I've had an online business for 20 years) with the intention that he'd be doing this for the next 8 years at least until he leaves home. So, it's a long term strategy for us (we're doing the project whether we broadcast it or not, so we may as well). And I'm sort of tagging on the biz training for him and see if we can develop it into a part time job for him (I'm launching on another biz that this coincides with as well). My question for you is this...there's plenty of info out there on the tech side of the equation and plenty of courses like SOP on getting started (which we may do in a few months) and marketing info, etc., but either I'm not seeing or just not looking in the right places for resources on the broadcasting skills side. Obviously, just doing it is a huge bit of it. But, I'd like to be able to talk him through the skills needed and how to get them in a general way. We're interviewing a radio friend about interviewing next week, but I thought I would ask you...Do you have any resources that you could point us to on developing the broadcast skills needed to make a great show (assuming the content is great and the tech is listenable)? Thanks for any direction you could give, I appreciate your time! I was emailing back and forth with Marcus Couch who is on the WP Plugins A to Z show. I heard him mention Divi, and Visual Composer. I was going to spotlight Visual Composer, and sent a message over to Marcus who then said he liked a plugin call Cornerstone even better than those two. I checked it out and it is super cool. Check out this video at weeklywebtools.com/325 You edit everything from the front end, and much like most builders it is HIGHLY customizable. This also means that there are tons of little nooks and crannys that you need to check out so you can get the most out of the software. The video above is kind of long, but it does give you a complete guide to the software. I live the Divi theme, but this one has my attention. At $35 it is quite the bargain. Visual Composer $34 Cornerstone is $35 Elegant Themes $69 but you get a whole slot of tools and plugins Plugins that Make My Life Easier This plugin does what the name says it does. No more going into each link to make sure the box is checked. The other plugin I love is the Advanced Image Styles why? Becuase it allows me to put in some white space around my images. Special thanks to everyone who has been supporting the show. Show some love at www.weeklywebtools.com/support
I've had the chance to talk to some really smart and down to earth people lately. Today's guest, Marcus Couch of WordPress podcasting fame (though don't say that around him), joins us to chat about the ups and downs of running your own business. From landing large national client's with hundreds of websites, to losing ten's of thousands of dollars betting on the wrong partner. This episode is about as real as it gets, narrated by a guy who knows his stuff. Enjoy! Interview with Marcus Couch Listen to the audio version I'm just a member of the community. ~ Marcus Couch I wanted to open up with that quote, as it paints the picture really well about our friend Marcus. I joked at the top of the show (as we WordPress podcasters do) and mentioned that he was the Simon Cowell of WordPress podcasting. Marcus parried and stated he was just a member of the community — not a celebrity. He's doing things for the love of the software and for the love of the job. It inspires him, allows him to create and he can do all this while making a living. I relate to this very well , as I'm sure you do too. So many of us get caught up in the money and the “fame” of a startup that we burn out or find ourselves not loving what it is we do. Curtis McHale recently wrote a post about this that you should read. Hard lesson learned There's a point in the episode that things get real. Really real. This is another lesson I sorely relate to — as I fear some of you have learned as well. I couldn't write about it on this post to do it justice, so you'll just have to listen. I can say, pick the right partners and hire the right people for the job — it could cost you more than you think. You can find Marcus Couch at his website, marcuscouch.com Join the Pro community! You know you're on the right path when someone reaches out to you to encourage what you're doing... even when it's something you've just started and you don't even know them. That was my first interaction with Marcus Couch. Not too shabby, huh? Marcus is one of those natural 'Go Givers' (book by Bob Burg) and an amazing community builder (I almost used the word connector as opposed to community builder but he really does so much more than connect people). After one of my first podcasts had aired I received a tweet from Marcus saying he liked the show & to keep it up (I swear I took a screenshot of the tweet but for the life of me I can't find it. :-( Note to self: keep better track of this stuff!)). Marcus has had a pretty amazing career and his journey to WordPress is a little different than some of my previous guests (of course everyone's journey is interesting... it's one of my favorite elements to the interviews) in that it was due to having a podcast in 2004 that he found WordPress! I know I didn't even know what a podcast was in 2004. Just sayin. :-)His background was in graphics and technology, which then led him to music and doing artwork for album covers (I asked him if there were any bands he worked with that we would know... and due to having grown up in suburbia and being a high school student in the late 80's you can probably guess my knowledge of rock music was pretty much Van Halen, Def Leppard, Poison.. you get the picture, but he did share a band with me). When he found how easy it was to produce an RSS feed with WordPress for his podcast (prior to that he had been hard coding it) he jumped on it right away. Once he put the podcast on WordPress it skyrocketed the show to the point where he had a weekly feature broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio! I told him when I received his bio that I had no idea he was such a 'celebrity'. From being the marketing director of Entrepreneur.com to working with companies like Absolut Vodka, Footlocker and Godaddy ( to name a few), Marcus has gained been around the 'marketing block' so to speak (was that a completely goofy sentence?). The work he does with clients today is based on getting them results. He shares a really cool story about an experiment he's running which is creating some solid proof for his skills when it comes to results for his clients. Community Builder Extraordinaire Marcus and The WordPress Community WordPress Plugins A - Z When Marcus tweeted to me about my podcast he let me know he was co-host of the WordPress Plugins A-Z podcast with John Overall. They review the latest & greatest WordPress plugins, both bringing to the table a few plugins they've each found in the WordPress plugin repository (*listen to the episode to hear how many plugins are added to the repository daily!). I love how Marcus connected with John to join him on the podcast - he simply offered (after hearing the other co-host was leaving the show). Novel idea, huh? TIP! Without a doubt, one of my biggest 'takeaways' from this interview with Marcus was that it's really not as hard as we think to reach out and connect with people. Marcus jumped into the WordPress community with both feet (for both the podcast and WP Tavern, but I'll get to that in a minute) and even received some snarky comments from people. But it didn't stop him. Fortunately for us he stuck with it and continues to give back to the community. WP Tavern Just this past June Marcus joined WPTavern.com where he writes about, surprise, WordPress plugins. I have to tell you that I must have asked or commented a few times about when he actually sleeps! I find myself time challenged just to keep up with this site, content and clients, let alone a few sites! Marcus is stellar at bringing people together and pooling resources and sites into one place to better serve his audience, which of course led to another new WordPress venture called WordPress Radio! WPR.
John Lee Dumas started his Entrepreneur on Fire podcast in June of 2012 (about a year ago). Fast forward and John now has a podcast that is in the top 5 of business podcasts in iTunes. He is making 18,000 a month, reaching HUNDRED of THOUSANDS of people each month in over 145 countries. He did it using the organizational tools and courage he learned in the Armed forces (he served 13 months in Iraq) and with passion that is infectious. He was consuming a large about of podcasts in the car, but he needed more content. What did he do? He filled his own void by creating the podcast he wanted to listen to. Your Podcasts Downloads Stats All In One Place - Stitcher News [3:00] Stitcher announced that they will "pinging" your media host. In a memo that was sent out they outlined the changes as follows: You should begin to see a change in your stats via your hosting provider dashboard when our iOS update is live in the App Store within the next few days. The magnitude of the change will vary based on the specific show but should be noticeable immediately via your hosting provider’s metrics dashboard. We are also updating the Stitcher Partner Portal to reflect this change. We will keep you posted on timing but anticipate seeing this new Download number included in you Stitcher metrics within the next few weeks. The old Downloads stat, which was measuring actual listens, will still be in the partner portal but relabeled “Listens” This means that we no longer have to login to (for example) Libsyn.com or Blubrry.com (two of the top media hosting companies) and then later also check into Stitcher. This will make is easier to quote numbers to potential sponsors. Congratulations Marcus Couch [7:21] If you are a regular listener of the School of Podcasting then you know Marcus Couch and I go way back to the early days of Podcasting with companies like Mevio, Juice Software, and iRiver recorders. Marcus is an SEO expert and a Wordpress Guru. He wanted to get more traction in the Wordpress World. His goal was to get on to the dashboard of every Wordpress user and this month he landed there. How? By doing what Marcus preaches - creating good content. He has his music show the Scene Zine, and recently became a co-host of Wordpress Plugins A to Z (one of my favorite podcasts). You an now read him on the official Wordpress Tavern blog. Congrats to Marcus. John Dumas of the Entrepreneur on Fire Podcast - Light Up the Sky! [9:02] John Dumas is the passionate podcaster behind the microphone on Entrepreneur On Fire. He is also the author of the Book Podcast Launch, and is now rolling out an inner circle mastermind group call Fire Nation Elite. In today's interview you will get inside the mind of John and see his commitment to his audience. You will see where his drive is to inspire his audience to take action. You will hear how he is building his audience through dedication, commitment, and a determination to build his audience (called "The Fire Nation") one person at a time. John shares what lessons he learned during his 13 months in IRAQ. "It's better to make a good decision now then make a great decision later." John spent $3,000 to hire a personal mentor (Jaime Tardy) and says if you don't have that much to invest in your podcast start up that you could check out master mind or online groups (I'm a big fan of some of the groups on Google+, LinkedIn). A One on one coach can be helpful because of the personalized approach. Mastermind groups (which you might find at meetup.com) may get you in contact with other people and become a networking opportunity. [23:55]Entrepreneur on Fire had 267,000 unique downloads in May of 2013 and June should go over 300,000. [25:25] My favorite part of the interview is when John goes to tell me some new news from Apple. He doesn't say, "This is something my audience doesn't even know yet." He doesn't say "This is something the fire nation isn't aware of." He says "I haven't even told fire nation," and to me it shows how John thinks of his audience as ONE person. John talks about the importance of having an "avatar" of your audience (picture your audience member), and then talk to that person. John asks the same questions to every guest on his show. This accomplishes two things. You know what's coming, and you never know what you're going to get (because each guest answers them differently). John has got some great guests like Seth Godin, Tim Ferriss on his show. How? He caught them when they had books available and were on publicity tours. [35:40]Industry Standard Podcast CPM Sponsors came to John when was seen in the top rankings of iTunes. According to John the industry standard is: $18 cpm (per thousand downloads) for a 15 second preroll at the beginning of your podcast. $25 cpm for a 60 second spot in the middle of your podcast. John in the second quarter of 2013 was getting 8,000 downloads per episode. This calculates to $300 per episode - per sponsor. John had two sponsors per show. This means he was making $600 per episode. John does 30 episodes a month, so he made $18,000 a month. His sponsors are signing up for the third quarter (which shows that podcast sponsorship works). John has his mastermind group that you can join at firenationelite.com John released a book Podcast Launch which is spreading his brand. John is using a Private Facebook group to manage his membership/mastermind group. John's Weekly Schedule Mondays - He had 8 straight interviews on every single Monday. He was up to midnight editing. Tuesday - Wide open. Wednesday - Wide open. Dinner with friends. Thursday - Interviews on other podcasts. Friday - Fire nation elite members. Saturday - Fire nation elite interviews before going to visit family Sunday - Splicing entrepreneur on fire interviews.
