The sale of The Observer, the world's oldest Sunday newspaper and a bastion of liberal values in Britain's media landscape, was approved despite two days of strike action from journalists. The Scott Trust, the owner of the Guardian Media Group, which includes The Observer and its sister paper The Guardian, said the sale to Tortoise Media was expected to be signed in December. The Scott Trust said it would invest in Tortoise Media, becoming a key shareholder, and take a seat on both its editorial and commercial boards. Tortoise has also committed to safeguarding journalistic freedom and the editorial independence of The Observer, undertaking to honor the “liberal values and journalistic standards” of the Scott Trust in its editorial code. Tortoise was launched in 2019 by James Harding, a former editor of The London Times and director of news at the BBC, and the former U.S. ambassador to London, Matthew Barzun. Harding said The Observer name represents “the best of liberal, pioneering journalism,” and promised readers that “we will do all we can to live up to its history as a defender of human dignity and to give it a new lease of life as a powerful, progressive voice in the world.” Ole Jacob Sunde, who chairs the Scott Trust, said The Observer needed “an ally to be sufficiently funded, long-term in nature, and respect editorial independence and liberal values.” Journalists at both The Guardian, which publishes print editions between Monday and Saturday and has a deep digital footprint around the world, and The Observer, have protested the sale and went on a 48-hour strike. Giao Pacey, a partner at media and entertainment law firm Simkins LLP, said The Observer's new leadership will have to be careful in safeguarding the value of the newspaper, which is intrinsically linked to its brand, established over centuries. “Once the sale is completed, the leadership team will need to strike the right balance between preserving the legacy, culture, and integrity of the business while ensuring that it has sufficient resources and support to thrive in a rapidly evolving market,” said Pacey. This is the final installment in Strange New Work, a series that uses speculative fiction to explore radical work futures.Power. Some fear it. Others hoard it. Some with power speak softly. Others carry a big stick. Power is charisma, or coercion, or violence. Power is name recognition, or money, or computer code.Regardless of your definition or perceptions of it, power plays a critical role in how we work.Today, we explore power—what we can do with it, how we can grow it, and, critically, how we can share it—because power in the future of work will look very different than it does today.Footnotes: Find out more about Tania Luna Lead Together by Tania Luna The Power Paradox by Dacher Keltner The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. As Barack Obama's chief fundraiser, Matthew Barzun was acclaimed for encouraging many small-scale donors to contribute in 2008 and again in 2012. As the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Barzun, together with his wife Brooke, initiated town meetings in schools all over Britain, and opened up Winfield House, his official residence, to artists, musicians, writers, actors -hosting celebrations, concerts, political forums and the best parties ever. On episode 46 of The River Cafe Table 4, Matthew talks with Ruthie about his childhood, his recently published book, and why cooking for his family is so important to him.   For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks.  Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe's open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation. Episode 13: Giving Away Power for More Authentic LeadershipWe're used to working and teaching in hierarchical structures, where power flows from the top down. But what would happen if, instead of maintaining power at the top, leaders gave power away to others? How could sharing power change the way we work, the way we relate to others, and the way we approach problem-solving? And what would schools look like if everyone was part of a constellation of contributors?Guest: Matthew BarzunResources and Expanded Show NotesFull TranscriptIn This Episode:“The problem with power sharing is it, because so much of us are in this pyramid mindset, it's sort of like, well, if I have 10 units and we share it, I guess I'll have five and you have five now. But what all these amazing leaders who inspired me realized was no, no, no, power isn't a finite thing, like something you mine in Western or Eastern Kentucky, like coal. It is something, it is infinite, and you make it. And you make it with other people sitting around a table, virtual or real. And it all begins with giving away power.” (14:28)“Diversity and division. They have the same root, ‘div'. So what they love most and fear most has something to do with separateness. And so that, you know, now we see where it ends with the constellation. I was like, so they want to stand out as an individual like me, but they don't want to stand out so much that they're lonely. Right? So they want to stand out and fit in. And then I was like, boy, do we have a good image for that in the form of a constellation. Stand out, be special and form something special to you. Easy to say, hard to do.” (30:57)“We want freedom together. And not some mushy compromise, right? Half freedom, half together. Freedom with and through one another…the hard part was how could we figure out how to be free together? Thirteen separate colonies. And we did a constitution and we, you know what I mean, all that kind of stuff. And we had a motto for it: From Many One. And we had an image that was supposed to go—remember, he named that ship the USS Constellation. We had an image that's supposed to go with that motto.” (43:37)“It cannot be isolated to the teacher or to the student or to the comedian or to the thing. It's this mutuality, it's this interdependence. It's the invisible. When someone shows you Orion's Belt, right? The lines aren't there, you have to imagine them. And then once you've seen them, you can't unsee them. And so that, I think, is what's going on here, that if we can find those connections, pass them onto the next generation, they will be alive and not be able to unsee them and be able to build useful, much more powerful things together than we could on our own.” (47:25) Hosted on Acast. You know pyramid thinking; it's the pervasive mindset that compels us to ask, “Who's up? Who's down? Who's in? Who's out? Who wins? Who loses?” But thinking about power and its flow between people in those terms means missing out on other skills. Pyramid thinking says, “If you're not spinning around the winning-or-losing hamster wheel, then you're doing nothing”—when in reality, blowing up that binary lets us focus on learning, playing, and building. What's the shape of that model? Author and former U.S. ambassador Matthew Barzun sees it as a constellation, where everyone is both distinctly themselves and part of something greater. If pyramids symbolize top-down-ness and control, then constellations symbolize interdependence and co-creation. Matthew Barzun is the former U.S ambassador to Sweden and the United Kingdom, and in his new book, The Power of Giving Away Power, Matthew lays out a shift in how to think about power and leadership.   In so many areas of our lives, power is seen as a pyramid, where the people at the top make the decisions, create the ideas, and determine the course of action. Matthew makes the case for the constellation mindset, where we rely on individual parts coming together to form something greater and grander than previously thought possible.   Matthew asks some big questions that challenge our concepts of what winning and losing looks like, and how we approach our disagreements.   Connect with Matthew on his website at https://matthewbarzun.com, and follow him on Twitter (@matthewbarzun).

Join TNS Host Michael Lerner in conversation with Matthew Barzun about his new book, The Power of Giving Away Power: How the Best Leaders Learn to Let Go. About the book: "In this practical and personal journey, Barzun brilliantly layers lessons across history and industries with his own experiences as an internet entrepreneur, political organizer, and US ambassador to the United Kingdom and Sweden. With lessons for leaders of all types, The Power of Giving Away Power shows how the Constellation mindset shines in some of the most impactful organizations and innovations the world has ever known. And it encourages us all to recognize, as Barzun writes, "the power we can create by seeing the power in others" — and making the leap to lead. Together." Matthew Barzun has always been fascinated about how we can stand out and fit in at the same time. He helped countries do both when he served as U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom and to Sweden. What power do you have? We know power can be taken and hoarded, but can power be given away? I've walked the streets in protests on and off for many years, and I've always had mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I'm with people, and we're making our voices heard. On the other hand, will this really make a difference? Or is this simply an expression of frustration and powerlessness? He followed in the family tradition and read History and Literature of America at Harvard University, taking a break for a year to work as a teaching assistant in Cape Town. After graduating he worked for an internet start-up company in San Francisco, where he became chief strategy officer.
