How to Publish a Bestseller (Without Getting Scammed) With Michelle DeFilippo

The Entrepreneurial You

In this episode of The Entrepreneurial You, Heneka Watkis-Porter sits down with publishing industry veteran Michele DeFilippo, founder of 1106 Design. With over 50 years in the book publishing world, Michele brings a wealth of knowledge on how authors can take control of their publishing journey, avoid scams, and profit from their passion. She breaks down the evolution of self-publishing, revealing how independent authors can compete with traditional publishers—and win—by maintaining ownership, setting industry-standard quality, and being smart about their choices. Whether you're a first-time writer or a seasoned author, Michele's guidance provides a blueprint for building a successful, scam-free publishing experience. The Power of Self-Publishing: Profit, Control & Protection Michele is clear: self-publishing isn't just an alternative—it's a business decision. Authors can maintain creative control, keep more of their earnings, and bring their books to market without signing away their rights. But with this freedom comes responsibility. Michele warns against shady hybrid publishers that charge high production fees and still claim a share of your royalties. Her advice? If you're paying for the work, own the outcome—including your files, your ISBNs, and your book's future. Heneka echoes the importance of being informed, noting how many aspiring authors fall victim to scams due to lack of publishing knowledge. Competing With Traditional Publishing: Yes, You Can Michele debunks the myth that self-published books are inferior. With platforms like Amazon KDP and IngramSpark, and a focus on professional-quality design, editing, and typesetting, indie authors can match—and often exceed—the quality of traditional publishers. The key? Following industry standards and never cutting corners. “Readers don't care how a book is published,” Michele says, “only that it's well done.” She urges authors to purchase their own ISBNs through Bowker, which allows them to retain full control over the book in all its formats—eBook, paperback, or hardback. What You'll Learn in This Episode: • How to avoid scams and bad deals in the publishing industry • Why self-publishing can be more profitable and empowering than traditional routes • How to meet traditional publishing standards on your own • Why owning your ISBNs and production files matters • Smart marketing tactics for positioning your book as a business tool • The truth about bestseller programs—and what really drives book success This episode is a must-listen for any aspiring author ready to publish with confidence, clarity, and control. Tune in, take notes, and share it with someone who dreams of becoming a published writer—without the pitfalls. COMMUNITY CONNECTION: Now it's time for our Community Connection segment! Michele emphasizes that professional publishing services ensure a polished, market-ready book, allowing authors to focus on their message and audience. --- Publish Your Book Like a Pro with Michele DeFilippo Good day, dear listeners. Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast. And my guest today is Michele DeFilippo, the founder of 1106 Design, a company helping non-fiction authors get professionally published. Michele, welcome to the show. Thank you so much, Steve. I appreciate being here. Well, let's start with my favorite question, which is, what is your personal “Why?” And what are you doing to manifest it in your business? Okay, well, that's a great question, because I started doing these podcasts in January. And the reason for it is, was that I just couldn't stand anymore, all of the misinformation that's swirling around in self publishing. And the field has become very complicated, unnecessarily so, in the last 20 years. And the complications have not been to the benefit of the author. So I conquered my fear of public speaking, and I'm just going to speak out now and tell people what we do and how we do it and what authors should think about when they go out searching for a service provider for their book. Okay, so the terminology can be really important here. You mentioned service provider, you mentioned confusion that authors have. So what is the confusion? What is a service provider? You know, people also talk about traditional publishers. You also talk about professional publishing and there's book service. What do these terms mean and what is the confusion that is being created? Okay, well the major, I have to just kind of give a little history first to explain what I'm what I'm where I'm going with this. In traditional publishing, we're all familiar with that. A traditional publisher will buy the rights to produce the manuscript for an author. They will hire the experts to produce the book and then when a book is sold, they will take most of the money from sales in order to recoup that investment. It's a solid business decision. They have always been and still are known for producing top-quality books, and the author pays nothing under that business model. So that has always been the way publishing has been run for hundreds of years. When self-publishing first came on the scene in around 20 something years ago, Amazon created an earthquake in the publishing world. All of a sudden, it was possible for authors to produce their own books, distribute those books to the public without needing to go through a publisher first, and then reaping all of the profits from book sales when a book was sold. In the intervening 20 years, it's gotten complicated. Now, if you go online and look for self-publishing assistants, you're going to find self-publishing companies, hybrid publishers, independent publishing companies are now simply publishers. And what they're doing is charging the author to produce the book and also taking some of their money on the back end when a book is sold. That's not really advantageous to the author. The original self-publishing model was that the author would hire the experts, the author would be the publisher, and then in return for the author making that investment, the author would get all of the money from book sales. So it's gotten all mixed up, and in many other ways too,

Self-Publishing Made Easy Michele DeFilippoHow many of you have traversed the unfriendly seas of self-publishing a book? I know I have. Being a published author is awesome! It gives you authority, credibility, etc. It can also give you some extra income, and in some cases – great income! But it can also become a nightmare… Book publishing used to be simple, but not anymore. Authors browsing the internet are unaware that a publisher is unnecessary and that hiring one can significantly reduce their income from book sales. Too many authors become victims of unscrupulous companies that abuse their trust, and some of the worst offenders are "Christian" publishing companies that deliberately target people of faith. Just remember the warning Jesus gave us, “Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing.” Amen! That is the reason for our interview today with a woman who is out to change that narrative and actually HELP authors – Christian authors – to navigate those dangerous seas and arrive safely at the ultimate destination of having your own book, self-published, and maximize your earnings potential at the same time. Michele DeFilippo is the owner of 1106 Design where she offers "assisted self-publishing." This service provides aspiring authors with the necessary services to create quality books and distribute them directly, without a publisher, to earn more money. Folks, this is not a new idea. It's what indie publishing was meant to be before the message was buried in misinformation. 1106 Design is a one-stop source that has produced over four thousand books since 2001 and earned an outstanding industry reputation. With over 50 years of personal experience in publishing, Michele can highlight questions authors may not ask as they evaluate providers online. Help me welcome to the program, Michele DeFilippo! Michele, thank you taking the time to join us today and talk about this important topic! First question I always start with is this… other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Michele DeFilippo? What does the “1106” stand for? You've been doing this kind of work a long time. How has publishing changed over the years? When I published my “Marriage Ceremony Handbook” eight or more years ago, I searched on Google, etc. and was just overwhelmed at the number of self-publishing companies available back then… it must be even worse today, correct? Your company kind of “fills the gap” between independent publishing and full service publishers, correct? You use an example of Print on Demand and Self-Publishing – that references needing a medical procedure done and going to the library and checking out medical text book… can you share that example with us? Can you share with us a little bit about the process you take prospective clients through when they work with you? What is the number one mistake you see new authors make when it comes to getting their book published? What about editing? To me, it was fairly easy to get the original manuscript finished… then it took me another year to edit it where I finally said, “Enough already” and hit print. Does your company offer help in editing? Explain the “Full Service Project Management Team.” What is that, how does it work? Let's move into marketing… We have the book written… we now have it edited and ready to print…...

Navigating the Evolution of Book Publishing: Insights for Authors from Michele DeFilippo

My Favorite Mistake

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2024 39:17

My guest for Episode #259 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Michele DeFilippo, the Founder of 1106 Design, LLC, started in 2001 to work with authors to help them take advantage of opportunities in the changing industry of book publishing – providing one-stop publishing services from manuscript to market. Episode page with video, transcript, and more I've worked with Michele on my last two books, Measures of Success and The Mistakes That Make Us. In this episode, Michele shares her “favorite mistake” story. We also take a deeper look into a significant industry change, – the rise of independent publishing. They trace this journey to the late 90s and early 2000s when independent publishing emerged as a robust alternative to traditional publishing houses. Uncover the misunderstood beginnings of independent publishing and how it has been pivotal in empowering authors. From its initially misconceived do-it-yourself approach, independent publishing has evolved into a strategic model that allows authors to bring industry professionals together to create high-quality books. In this episode, dive deep with us to explore how this professional, comprehensive approach has shifted the industry's narrative from – “self-published” towards “independent publishers.” Unearth the numerous ways professionalism and strategic collaboration can create a book product that competes favorably at the market level and meets readers' demands. Questions and Topics: Starting 1106 Design?? Did you look more before you leaped? “Independent publishing” vs “self publishing”? People DO judge a book by the cover?? Changes publishers have to make for cover design for online purchasing?? Compare traditional publishing vs. hybrid vs. indy? What does an author need to ask?? What happens if that company goes out of business and disappeared?? Manuscript is done… but now what? What does it cost to produce a book to traditional publisher standards? Mistake to assume your book is going to be sold in physical bookstores? Print book vs. eBook?

Give her a shout out and let her know you found her by listening/reading on Education Leadership & Beyond and she'll take care of you! One of the most best things I enjoy doing as a father and educator is reading with my kids--ages 12, 10, & 7. They all have turned out to be strong readers and enjoy it. Having an author on the show is always fun for me because I can learn so much from them. Chris Kreuter wrote a great kids book that combines sci-fi & hockey...My boy Matthew loved it! Heading into this next school year, if your kid likes either sci-fi or hockey, they'll love The Intergalactic Adventures of the Rainy River Bees. Additionally, I spoke about the importance of reading for kids and adults. One of the biggest indicators of success in school and beyond is reading reading levels and how do you improve your or your kids reading level? READ! There is a ton of research and articles out there on the importance of reading--I liked this one found on inspiration boost: 8 Reasons by JJ Wong. JJ Wong lists these 8 reasons why reading is important: 1. Expose yourself to new things. 2. Self Improvement. 3. Improve understanding. 4. Preparation for action. 5. Gain experience from other people. 6. Tools for communicating. 7. Connecting your brain. 8. Boost your creativity. I thought these were awesome...and very relative for all readers. I am watching my kids experience them now at their young ages. I especially like #s 3, 4, & 5. While on this journey of writing my book and creating the podcast #ELB, I have learned so much by reading articles and books on the topics to help get me started. Prepare to action. If they did it, why can't you? If there is something out there for you that you are looking to tackle next, read about it first! It's only a google search or a library stop away! Monday, June 18, 2018. #49 Blog & Podcast: 17 inches or Flexibility? Education Leadership and Beyond: Surviving & Thriving with Andrew Marotta and guest Paul Rickard. This weeks sponsor: 1106 Design. Thanks to Michele DeFilippo and her company 1106 Design. They did a great job helping me get my book off the ground and into print, online, and ready to go at all sellers. She provided awesome customer service to me, especially as someone who was brand new to all of this: book writing, websites, etc. They specialize in all things self-publishing: book formatting, editing, cover design, website creation, etc etc...& most important honesty, fairness, and integrity! Give her a shout out and let her know you found her by listening/reading on Education Leadership & Beyond and she'll take care of you! I recently read an article entitled Stay at 17 Inches. The gist of the article is about holding people accountable--holding kids accountable to the letter of the law...That a strike is a strike in baseball and that we have to stop making accommodations for different situations. No deviations from rules or laws...It is what it is. The article generated a lot of conversation with educators about rules, accountability, and standards. I feel strongly about these aspects of my job as Principal as well as my job as a college basketball official. I am charged with enforcing the rules and the consequences that go along with those rules. While I agree with many aspects of the article, I feel strongly that life is not that simple...I feel people deserve a chance, and maybe even a second chance sometimes. I believe in progressive discipline where someone who does not get into a lot of trouble may not get the same punishment as someone who has a lot of discipline. This is similar to a copy who may NOT give someone a ticket who has a clean driving record and someone with many tickets and such may get that ticket. I believe in the concept of treating everyone fairly, not exactly the same. A student who has a family member with a severe illness deserves some compassion and understanding with a dose of flexibility, while maybe someone who does not have those life circumstances does not. I discuss this concept and more with Chief of Mt. Hope Police and College Sports Official Paul Rickard. He balances enforcing the rules as written vs. the life scenarios that come his way...in real life and on the courts and fields. He shares stories about his role as a leader, father, police officer, and a college basketball & lacrosse official. Enjoy the Podcasts: Facebook Link #49 with Paul Rickard. While prepping for the show and researching the Culture of Love in Ithaca Schools, I was celebrating my 17th wedding anniversary with my wife, Jennifer Marotta. It made me think about the culture of love that we are building not only in our marriage, but also with our whole family. If you are married, you know it is not all rosey all the time. I reflected on the things that we do to make our marriage work: Here are a few of those reflections: 1. From my friend Dr. Bird (show #45), bring patience, love, and gratitude to one another--If your continue to focus on these three virtues, you will move past the things that upset you about one another. Be grateful for the good things in your life! Gratitude is the mother of all virtues! 2. Listen, don't fix! Hear your partner, take a breath, and don't try to fix every little thing. Leave it be. (this took me a long time, right Jenn?!) 3. Do what you say are you are going to do. When you do this, it creates consistent positive deposits in your relationship. 4. Keep him/her on a pedestal. My wife told me this after our first year of marriage that I stopped doing this. I think I became complacent, and that I did not have to "pursue" her anymore. I let the "special-ness" go and I thank her for telling me this so many years ago. 5. Build your partner up, don't break down. You support me too much SAID NO SPOUSE EVER! 6. Be committed: so many things in our society today are disposable and easily changed, exchanged, etc etc. Imagine if it was impossible for your marriage to fail? Well it should be, so make it that way! Show commitment! 7 & 8. Take adventures together and always make special time for just for the two of you! 9. Don't air your dirty laundry to others. 10. Live the life together that you want your children to have. Be the ideals that you stand for: love, kindness, compassion, passion, spirit, etc etc. Show these in your actions towards one another and those around you!
