On February 4th, President Donald Trump said that all Palestinians in Gaza should leave the coastal enclave and go to other Arab countries such as Egypt or Jordan—a move that, if actualized, would mark a drastic chapter in the Palestinians' history of being ethnically cleansed. Israel immediately embraced the idea, with the country's war minister ordering the military to draft plans to facilitate a mass exodus of Palestinians from Gaza. Palestinian groups as well as Egypt, Jordan, and many other countries have roundly rejected the idea, but Trump and his foreign policy team continue to insist that they will carry out the plan which would end in a US takeover of Gaza.On this episode of On the Nose, Jewish Currents senior reporter Alex Kane spoke to Mouin Rabbani, a co-editor of Jadaliyya, and Tariq Kenney-Shawa, US policy fellow at Al-Shabaka, about situating this moment in the long history of Palestinians displacement, whether and how a Trump ethnic cleansing plan is likely to unfold, and how it will impact the ceasefire in Gaza. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Further Reading“With No Buy-in From Egypt or Jordan, Trump Appears to Back Away From His Gaza Plan,” Michael Shear, The New York Times“‘Trump Gaza is finally here!': US president promotes Gaza plan in AI video,” Mick Krever and Mostafa Salem, CNN“Palestinians in Paraguay,” Hadeel Assali, London Review of Books“Trump Revives Biden's Failed Proposal To Remove Palestinians From Gaza,” Matthew Petti, Reason“Netanyahu's Goal for Gaza: ‘Thin' Population ‘to a Minimum,'” Ryan Grim, The Intercept“WikiLeaks: Israel Intentionally Kept Gaza on Brink of Economic Collapse,” Joshua Norman, CBS News“Exclusive: Egypt's alternative to Trump's 'Gaza Riviera' aims to sideline Hamas,” Andrew Mills, Reuters“Trump wants Palestinians out of Gaza. Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
In this episode of Mid Atlantic, host Roifield Brown engages in a profound discussion with Mouin Rabbani, a renowned expert on Middle Eastern affairs, focusing on the Palestinian struggle and its intricate position within the evolving dynamics of the Middle East. Rabbani offers a comprehensive analysis of Israel's intensified military actions in Gaza and the broader regional implications, highlighting the potential for an all-out regional war involving various actors like Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Iran.Rabbani sheds light on the complexities within the Palestinian political landscape, particularly the disintegration of Fatah and the weakening of Mahmoud Abbas's leadership. He argues that this internal division has hindered the Palestinian cause on the global stage, leaving a void where a strong, unified voice could have garnered more substantial international support. The conversation also touches on the critical role of international diplomacy, especially the impact of U.S. politics on the Middle East. Rabbani suggests that while U.S. support for Israel remains unwavering, the political landscape is slowly shifting, with growing public and political scrutiny of Israel's actions. The episode concludes with a sobering reflection on the future of the Palestinian state, acknowledging the immense challenges ahead but also hinting at the possibility of a turning point in the ongoing struggle for sovereignty.Key Quotes:"Israel has transformed itself into a rogue state, a pariah state, a genocidal regime in the eyes of much of Western public opinion.""The disintegration of Fatah has left the Palestinian cause without a strong, unified voice on the global stage.""We may now be closer to the beginning of the end than we were a year ago, but this struggle requires time, organization, and commitment.""Mahmoud Abbas's leadership has become a significant obstacle to Palestinian national unity.""Biden's unconditional support for Israel has reached a level of fanatic devotion, surpassing even his predecessors."Further Reading:Jadaliyya: For more in-depth analysis and writings by Mouin Rabbani.Feel free to explore these resources for a deeper understanding of the issues discussed in this Hosted on Acast. Mouin Rabbani on the war on Gaza, and the broader context of the Israel–Palestine conflict The post Fundraising special: Mouin Rabbani on Israel–Palestine appeared first on KPFA.
On this edition of Parallax Views, noted Dutch-Palestinian Middle East analyst and Jadaliyya magazine co-editor Mouin Rabbani took time out of his busy schedule to discuss a number of topics related to the Gaza War and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict more broadly. We begin the conversation by delving into the news of the International Criminal Court (ICC) seeking arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Israeli leaders as well as Hamas leaders like Yahya Sinwar. From there we branch out into a discussion of Mouin's contribution to the recent OR Books anthology DELUGE: Gaza and Israel from Crisis to Cataclysm. In this regard, Mouin delves into the regional dynamics at play with regard to the Gaza War and argues that the often-repeated analysis that Hamas committed the Oct 7th attack in order to sabotage Saudi-Israeli normalization is in fact wrong. He'll also discuss his analysis of what he believes were the motivations behind the Oct 7th attack. Additionally, Mouin and I discuss the issue of propaganda and how to cut through it when examining the Israel/Palestine conflict, the two-state solution's feasibility, prerequisites for a long-term solution to the broader conflict, Israel's us of artificial intelligence in warfare, the Palestinian Authority's Mahmoud Abbas as an obstalce to ending Palestinian divisions, and more.

With more than 20,000 Palestinians dead, areas of Gaza turned to rubble, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan has yet to investigate either Israel or Hamas for the deaths on and after 7 October– despite his exemplary hair trigger speed against Vladimir Putin for war crimes committed in Ukraine. With South Africa's referral of Israel to the International Court of Justice for genocide, and the U.S.'s continued strong support for the Netanyahu government's military response as geopolitical context, many are looking for the International Criminal Court to take action - if only as a warning to the parties, but so far Karim Khan, the British barrister serving as ICC prosecutor, shows no sign of action, reinforcing allegations of “rich country justice." Two close up observers of the process Hasmik Egian and Mouin Rabbani gave their take in the indispensable Pass Blue and will try to explain to the media International legal impotence in the face of alleged Israeli actions.

The Hamas attack of October 7 was preceded by a number of escalations: ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and Jerusalem, Netanyahu's threats to annex Palestine, encroachments into the Al Aqsa Mosque, the rise of the Lion's Den movement and Unity Intifada, as well as Israeli-Arab normalization agreements (“Abraham Accords”) which excluded Palestinians. In ArtiFact 54, Middle East scholar Mouin Rabbani joins Alex Sheremet to discuss the prehistory of October 7, Joe Biden's lifelong desire to protect Israel at all costs, myths about the Netanyahu government, and the region's future. Two months into the genocide in Gaza, Israel's propaganda has never been more transparent and sloppy. To discuss this and critical historical context, Rania Khalek is joined by Mouin Rabbani, a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies.
On Friday morning, Israel resumed its bombing campaign against Gaza, and the civilian death toll is once again rising. Both Hamas and Israel accused the other of violating the temporary truce. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has promised, “We will fight in the entire [Gaza] Strip.” Despite meekly worded suggestions from Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Israel make an effort to reduce civilian deaths, the U.S. position remains one of full-throttled support for a military campaign that has killed more than 15,000 Palestinians, the vast majority of them children and other civilians. In this special episode of Intercepted, political analyst Mouin Rabbani, co-editor of the Arab Studies Institute's ezine Jadaliyya, offers a provocative analysis of the current situation. In a discussion with Jeremy Scahill and Murtaza Hussain, Rabbani suggests that behind the belligerent rhetoric and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's proclamations he will eradicate Hamas, Israel may already be heading for a bloody quagmire it is unlikely to transform into an accomplishment of its stated goals. “We're now well into the second month of this war, and the most Israel has been able to achieve is to raise the Israeli flag on a hospital. It's not exactly Iwo Jima,” Rabbani says. The “Israeli military is a very effective killing machine when it's dropping 2,000-pound bombs from the air, but a rather mediocre fighting force when it comes to ground operations.” Rabbani describes the evolution of Hamas's strategy and tactics over the past decades and maps out several scenarios that might emerge in the coming period. “The idea that you can wipe [Hamas] out, even if you fully succeed in conquering every last square inch of the Gaza Strip, is an illusion,” he says. “It is effectively impossible to resume this war without regional escalation.”If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/give, where your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week.
Although Israelis view the events of 1948 as liberation, to Palestinians, this was “Nakba”, or “disaster”. According to Israeli historian Benny Morris, the events of those first few years were tantamount to “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians, a fact that neither Israel nor the international community have been able to properly deal with. How to resettle hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees and their descendants? Was the original partition of Palestine equitable and just, and if not, what would a logical compensation package look like? Was Israel interested in a genuine peace process, or do the Oslo Accords, Camp David, Taba, and events surrounding the First and Second Intifada suggest that Israel, according to Norman Finkelstein, is frightened of a Palestinian “peace offensive”? In this video, Norman Finkelstein, scholar of Palestine and the Holocaust, author of “Beyond Chutzpah”, “The Holocaust Industry”, “Gaza”, and “I'll Burn That Bridge When I Get To It”, convenes a panel with Alex Sheremet and several Palestinian refugees. These are scholar Mouin Rabbani, activist Sana Kassem, B'Tselem researcher Musa Abu Hashhash, and activist Arwa Hashhash. They discuss their families' experience fleeing Israel's war of independence, the destruction of Palestinian homes, the apartheid system of law, arrest, detention, harassment, and subsequent wars. Norman Finkelstein, who is himself the son of Holocaust survivors, often tells the story of his parents' shock at Israel's mistreatment of Palestinian refugees. He credits them with his moral understanding of the world and his interest in the Israel-Palestine conflict. Today, I am introducing a recording of an event on Israel-Palestine organized by members of the history department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The event took place on May 19th, 2021 and was co-sponsored by the Jadaliyya e-zine as well as the New Books Network. Here is the text of the event poster: When it comes to Palestine, there is a sharp disconnect between the ways academics specializing in the contemporary Middle East frame the dispute, and the discussions by journalists and mainstream media outlets. The current crisis must be placed within its longer context that includes decades of occupation of Palestinian territory by the Israeli military and Israeli settlers. This panel seeks to reframe the issue by providing scholarly, historical perspectives on the multiple factors that have led to the current events taking place in the Jerusalem neighborhood Sheikh Jarrah, which are now expanding outward. Furthermore, this panel will speak not to intellectual abstractions, but will provide academic contexts to pragmatic concerns that journalists and readers should understand and consider when reporting on or reading about the current situation in Palestine today. Panel Moderator: Dr. Sarah Shields is Professor of Middle East History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Panelists: Ussama Makdisi is Professor of History and the first holder of the Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies at Rice University. Sherene Seikaly is Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is the editor of the Arab Studies Journal, co-founder and co-editor of Jadaliyya e-zine, and editor of Journal of Palestine Studies. Mouin Rabbani is a researcher and analyst specializing in the Arab-Israeli conflict and the contemporary Middle East, and co-editor of Jadaliyya. Podcast Host: Samee Siddiqui is a PhD Candidate at the Department of History, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Learn more about your ad choices. (foto: Flickr/ Omar Chatriwala)
On Monday the 4th of December we hosted the lecture 'Is reconciliation in Palestine within sight?'. Reconciliation between the rival Palestinian movements Hamas and Fatah; after 10 years of conflict, an important step seems to have been taken in that direction. Hamas says it is prepared to dissolve its administrative committee in Gaza and cooperate in free elections. During this lecture, Middle East expert Mouin Rabbani analyzed these recent developments. What are they going to mean for the future of Palestine? And what role do Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iran play in this? humanityhouse.org/en/event/reconciliation-palestine-within-sight

And though the ICJ's verdict is not actionable (only the Security Council can punish countries, and we already know where who's boss there), Rabbani explains why the case still has huge ramifications. “This same state that has hid behind the extermination of Europe's Jews for every one of its actions,” he tells us. “Now itself stands accused of genocide. I think after this case, irrespective of its outcome, Israel will forever be tainted by what it is doing in the Gaza strip, and people will begin to recognize that Israel is not the Jewish state, but rather it is a Zionist state.” Meanwhile, as the case begins its first days in court, Secretary of State Antony Blinken is back in the region, trying to convince other Middle East countries to support Israel, bombing those that don't, and condemning the ICJ case, calling it meritless and galling. And he should be upset, says Mouin. “Antony Blinken should be outraged because if Israel is guilty of genocide, then not only the United States, but Blinken personally is complicit in genocide and would be hauled before a court and convicted of his role in perpetrating this genocide as well.” If Israel is convicted, it won't be hard to show the secretary's influence: “Blinken's not only implicated, he's been giving it a standing ovation since the moment it started.” Subscribe for the full interview where Mouin Rabbani lays out Israel's history of ethnic cleansing, exposes the New York Times' faked claim that Hamas used the Al Shifa hospital as a command center, and explains Biden's plans to ramp up his support for Israel even further. 00:00 Intro 01:13 The Four Food Groups of News 12:40 Mouin Rabbani interview 18:31 Israel carrying out assassinations 23:27 Israel is creating enemies 26:45 Blinken condemns ICJ case 35:36 PREDICTING the VERDICT 40:09 history of Israeli ethnic cleansing Learn more about your ad choices.
