In this interview Egyptian writer, photographer, activist and author Hossam el-Hamalawy speaks about the ways that Egyptian social movements and organizing is impacted by the struggle for freedom in Palestine. Hossam speaks about how the current Egyptian government of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has played a critical role in both suppressing dissent of social movements in Egypt today and how that is linked to efforts to silence real conversation and mobilization for Palestine. Hossam also speaks about how social movement forces in Egypt today are finding ways to push back. Their conversation traverses the relationship between Egypt and Israel from the point of the signing of the 1979 peace deal to the present Gaza war. In Berkeley Talks episode 190, journalist and UC Berkeley alumnus Vincent Bevins discusses mass protests around the world — from Egypt to Hong Kong to Brazil — and how each had a different outcome than what protesters asked for. “From 2010 to 2020, more people participated in mass protests than at any other point in human history,” said Bevins, author of the 2023 book, If We Burn. “These protests were often experienced as a euphoric victory at the moment of the eruption. But then, after a lot of the foreign journalists, like me, have left (the countries), and we look at what actually happened, the outcome was very different than what was originally expected or indeed hoped for.”For his book, Bevins interviewed more than 200 people in 12 countries, all of whom were a part of the uprisings, whether they put the protests together or responded to them as government officials or lived through them. In closing, he said, “When you properly want to restructure the system or make real problems for powerful forces, the counterattack is going to come.”And, according to thinkers from around the world Bevins spoke to, including Berkeley sociology Professor Cihan Tuğal, instead of putting together an organization during an uprising, protesters should build in the off-season.“Build real structures that can allow human beings that want to reshape the world in the same way to act together in the moment of the uprising," said Bevins, "because it's very difficult to put together an organization in the uprising.”This talk, recorded in October 2023, was moderated by Daniel Aldana Cohen, assistant professor of sociology at Berkeley and director of the Socio-Spacial Climate Collaborative, or (SC)2. The so-called "Arab Spring" that changed the course of many dictatorships is now more than ten years old. However, the situation in Egypt does not show many traces of a successful uprising. The liberal students Hannes and Jannes are hence on their mission to dive deeper into understanding the mechanisms of a revolution. This is why they start interviewing an exiled journalist from the country: Hossam el-Hamalawy. While initially asking naive and colonialist questions about Egypt, they soon begin learning about the impact and hopes of an uprising and what the unchaining of oppression, even in Germany, might look like. Listen to an interview with Egyptian activist, writer and photographer Hossam El Hamalawy @elhamalawy speaking on the current state of social movements in Egypt. In this exchange, recorded in Berlin, Hossam talks about the ways that state repression in Egypt has been deepened in recent years under the authoritarian government of Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. A key to this conversation is the ways that the complicity of western governments with the state repression in Egypt is a reality, largely contextualized by Hossam as related to the sale of military hardware by major French and German corporations of the military industrial complex which are making profits from selling to the Egyptian state. Music on this interview is by Anthony Sahyoun @asahyoun. Photo taken by Hossam "El-Darb el-Ahmar الدرب الأحمر" The accompanying photo is taken by Hossam who wrote at the time "the front page of the liberal daily Ad-Dustour with news on the solidarity protest held in London against the trial of the Mahalla 49." This is important context to highlighting Hossam's long term involvement with social movements in Egypt, including the organizing of factory workers in Mahalla industrial district who held strikes leading up to the 2011 uprising which created pivotal momentum toward the uprising. Hossam Zaki's collection is the manifestation of the intersection between the Artist's imagination and his fascination with the Etruscan ancient history. Etruscan art was produced by the Etruscan civilization of ancient Italy between the 9th and 2nd centuries BC. It is an art direction that is particularly strong in this tradition were figurative sculpture in terracotta. The artist collection is influenced by the artist's postgraduate studies in Etruscan sculpture. In parallel to his preoccupation with the ethereal fairy-tale likeness of dreams, where dreams can both demonstrate the good and the evil. Zaki was also intrigued by the idea that all humans, regardless of their character during the day, seem to rest in child-like peace during their sleep. The idea of dreams provided the artist with a rich visual reserve that was expressed through sleepy and dreamy figures that have childlike appearance. In a sense Zaki's artwork is an expression of a mythical world produced by his dreamy imagination with hints from ancient history.

Ever since the 2013 coup in Egypt, an increase in the harassment of journalists, bloggers, activists and now TikTok content creators posed the question of discrimination, especially since the targetted people are almost all women. While the government is accused of constantly monitoring the way women are represented in media (cinema, TV, and other arts), TikTok video makers are accused of promoting values contradicting those of the family. Interview de Hossam Adly, secrétaire général adjoint au Département de la cohésion sociale du canton de Genève.
Rules for Academic 1) All punctuation marks are not preceded by a space; they are all (with the exception of hyphen (-), dash (—), & slash (/)) followed by a space. N.B. Punctuation marks are important for driving your ideas home. (I prepared these notes using my Basics of Essay Writing[Part One pp. 1-30].) (2)Never end a sentence with an exclamation mark (!) and a question mark (?) at the same time (!?); each one(alone)is sufficient to end a sentence/question. Only in informal writing can we do so! If a question is exclamatory in the same time, give priority to putting a question mark (and not an exclamation mark): e.g., Has not he attended any lecture?& not Has not he attended any lecture!(3)Three punctuation marks only do put an end to a sentence—a full stop (.) to the complete sentence, a question mark (?) to the question, & an exclamation mark to the exclamatory.... (4)When mentioning items more than two, use a comma before the final and(and be consistent in this usage)to avoid ambiguity, e.g., I recited some Qur'anic verses, read the newspaper, and left for university.(5) A letter with a shadda in Arabic should be indicated by doubling/geminating that letter in English. This often appears when writing Arabic proper names in English: e.g., Muhammed Seddiq el-Minshawi. (6)Letters without shaddas in Arabic proper names must never be doubled/geminated when written in English: e.g., Sally, Hassan, Hossam, etc. All these customs followed by some British/American writers and, hence, imitated by us are undoubtedly wrong. Like us Arabs, British/American people commit many common mistakes in writing. (7)When you write an Arabic proper name beginning with al/el (the equivalent for the definite article thein English) such as al-Menshawi, el-Masri, al-Mahallawi, etc., write the al/elin small letters followed bya hyphen (-) then capitalize the first letter of the original word/name: e.g., Muhammed Seddiq el-Menshawi, Mustafa al-Mahallawi, etc. WHY? When in Rome do as the Romans do. Since you do not capitalize articles (a, an, & the) included in titles as proper nouns when writing in English, you should follow suit when writing proper nouns/names in English. You follow the rules of writing in the language needed. (8)A differentiation between the moon letter and the sun letter should be made clear in your writing of Arabic names: Kafreshikh(or even Kafresh-Shikhif acceptable in titles)University(and not Kafrelsheikh University). (9) Anglo-American writers favour two-part titles, in which the first part is an interest-awakening phrase, possibly a quotation, and the second identifies the topic and work(s) studied. Differentiate the subtitle from the main title with a line break (and here the subtitle must be smaller than the main title) or separate the two with a colon (and here the two parts must have the same font degree). https://www.facebook.com/abdelrahman.tallat.5 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jack-bosma3/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jack-bosma3/support

Hossam el-Hamalawy, journalist, photographer and member of the Egyptian Revolutionary Socialists, reflects on the term 'Arab Spring' and the ten years that have passed since what he refers to as the regional revolutions and regional uprisings that took place in the Middle East and North Africa. Interviewed by Khalil Bendib | English Courtesy of Voices of the Middle East and North Africa (VOMENA).
Ten years ago, the Arab Spring took the world by surprise, profoundly shaking the status quo in North Africa and the Middle East and bringing hope for a new democratic beginning in that long-suffering region. After several regimes were non-violently toppled in rapid succession through peaceful pressure from the streets, reactionary forces in the region regrouped and launched fierce counter-revolutions in certain countries and outright civil war in others. We take a historical look at the past decade with Egyptian veteran journalist and activist Hossam El Hamalawy photo by Hossam El-Hamalawy: arabawy.org

In this first part, we cover Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring, which is hailed as its only success. We will then look at neighboring Libya, where civil society activists carry on their peace-building efforts in the midst of the crisis, violence and instability that has plagued the country since its uprising.Part 2, we will cover how events unfolded in Egypt, Syria and Yemen, with a heavy focus on how women's role shaped the success of the popular uprisings.Featuring comments from:- Mona Eltahawy, Egyptian-American activist and journalist- Kholoud Helmi, Syrian journalist - Youssef Cherif, director of Columbia Global Center Tunis- Hala Bugaighis, co-founder of Jusoor Libya- Abdulhadi Soliman, head of Fezzan Libya- Mohamed Ghedira, founder of Chnowa Barnamjek, Tunisia's first youth-focused think tank- Hossam el-Hamalawy, Egyptian activist - Afrah Nasser, Human Rights Watch's Yemen researcherFollow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for more.(Produced by Gaia Caramazza and Danya Hajjaji.
