Years later, she would place that emotional conversation in the context of the wider problem - rising seas caused by climate change, in turn caused by global capitalism - and decide to dedicate herself to the fight for climate justice. We join her in Stanmer Park, the site of a protest against the mining company Glencore, as well as an inspiring community project. Mikaela Loach said: if we never challenge capitalism, then we'll be stuck with it. What can you do on an individual level? Join a union; contribute to strike funds, help make general strikes happen; allow yourself to imagine a multiplicity of futures and work out how to move towards them. Advocate for climate debt to be addressed and for existing Global South debt to be cancelled so that there can be a global transition away from imperialism. Get involved in work that is directed at tackling the producing class - the bosses and titans of industry - and work to take these corporations down. Call out their greenwashing to take down their social licences - a topic we will be covering in the next chapter. And importantly, build support and power in our communities and through our political systems so that the future we need can be won by the masses. We must build widespread support for an eco-socialist, post-growth future. The climate crisis makes the fight against capitalism more urgent than ever. This fight is inherently political. There are a lot of people with a lot of power who are doing all that they can to maintain the capitalist system. As I write this, the Conservative government in the UK is putting in legislation to make striking illegal, and the main opposition party, Labour, refused to say they would repeal these laws. READ THIS WITH ME? https://www.mikaelaloach.com/ OR https://blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/product/Its-Not-That-Radical-by-Mikaela-Loach/9780241597538OR TRY FREE VIA PUBLIC LIBRARY? https://www.hoopladigital.com/ OR https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libbyGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. The climate crisis is the biggest single issue affecting us all - but for some, the impact will be, and already is, far greater than for others. This is the principle of climate justice, that sees the causes and consequences of climate change as inextricably linked with social inequality - and that activist Mikaela Loach has made the focus of her work. Today on Ways to Change the World, Mikaela Loach tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy why we need to reframe our understanding of the climate crisis in order to tackle its root causes, and why only through “active hope” and collective action can we radically transform our world for the better. We need to remember that the "doom" we feel is part of the plan. They have made us fearful of change, but that's a trap. Change is liberation. Change is freedom. Change is justice. But we have to stop feeding into the narratives that everything we know and love will disappear if we don't have capitalism, because that's (quite frankly) bullshit. Women affected by the state pension age changes have scored what's been hailed as a major victory in their legal challenge for more compensation. The Government watchdog conceded that part of the investigation into how increases to the state pension age were communicated was flawed and must be reconsidered. The Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign represents the 3.6 million women who, in lots of cases, only got 12 months' notice of a six year increase to their State Pension age. When invited to speak at the recent Gates Foundation Goalkeepers 2030 event, Mikaela Loach seized the opportunity to announce that capitalism is causing climate change and “billionaires shouldn't exist.” This young climate justice activist has been fighting fossil fuel projects in the UK using a variety of tactics. She is one of three claimants who has taken the UK government to court for handing over taxpayer money to fossil fuel companies in violation of their commitments to reach net zero emissions. Mikaela has been heavily involved in the #StopCambo campaign that successfully shut down development of the Cambo oil field. She and others in this campaign continue to fight the development of Rosebank, the biggest untapped oil field in the North Sea. If the oil and gas in this massive field are burned, they will create more CO2 than all the total emissions from all 28 low-income countries. #StopeRosebankMikaela is a 5th year medical student and the co-host of the YIKES Podcast – a show that focuses on the things that make us go “Yikes!” – from the climate crisis to racial capitalism. "COP27: Ukraine a reason to act fast on climate change - Rishi Sunak The war in Ukraine is a reason to act faster to tackle climate change, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has told the UN climate summit COP27. ""Climate and energy security go hand-in-hand,"" he said in his first international appearance since taking office. Leaders from 120 countries are meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt to discuss next steps in curbing climate change. Key topics are compensation and support for the most-affected countries. ADVERTISEMENT ""Putin's abhorrent war in Ukraine and rising energy prices across the world are not a reason to go slow on climate change. They are a reason to act faster,"" Mr Sunak said. ""We can bequeath our children a greener planet and a more prosperous future [...] There really is room for hope,"" he added. In a series of speeches, leaders urged rich countries to stay the course in stopping further climate change, despite the war in Ukraine and global financial problems. Nations on the front line of climate change laid out the stark impacts of higher temperatures, drought, and floods on people and the environment. ""We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator,"" UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told the summit. His stark warning was echoed by former US vice-president and environmentalist Al Gore who said nations must ""stop subsiding the culture of death"" of fossil fuels. In an energetic speech French President Emmanuel Macron urged world leaders to deliver climate justice. Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also in Egypt and said countries should not ""go weak and wobbly"" on climate action. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said switching to renewable energy was ""a security policy imperative"", while Italy's new prime minister Giorgia Meloni said her country remained ""strongly committed"" to its climate goals. US President Joe Biden is due to arrive at the summit on Friday, while John Kerry, his special envoy for the climate, is already in attendance. Though Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg is staying away from the summit, after she accused the UN of ""green-washing"", many other youth activists are in Sharm el-Sheikh. Xiye Batista portrait in the conference room IMAGE SOURCE,XIYE BASTIDA Image caption, Xiye Bastida is an indigenous climate activist from Mexico Xiye Bastida, a 20-year-old activist from Mexico, is there to tell decision-makers that ""nature must be protected"". She told BBC News she's pleased with progress so far in Egypt - including getting the words ""loss and damage"" on the agenda. The terms refer to money - as some form of compensation or reparations - for the effects of climate change on developing countries that did little to cause the problem. Why the latest UN meeting matters What have leaders done on climate change in 2022? But 24-year-old Mikaela Loach, from Scotland, said she's worried leaders are not fully committed to climate action that prioritises justice or human rights. ""Not all climate solutions are good for people. It's not just about cutting emissions, we must frame all our work about people and the world we are creating,"" she told BBC News. Barbados PM Mia Mottley spoke of ""horror and the devastation wrecked upon this Earth"" in the past year. ""Whether the apocalyptic floods in Pakistan, or the heatwaves from Europe to China, or indeed in the last few days in my own region, the devastation caused in Belize by tropical storm Lisa, or the torrential floods a few days ago in St Lucia. We don't need to repeat it,"" she said. The fact that the summit is taking place in Africa, a continent that is extremely vulnerable to climate change, was repeated through the day. Kenyan President William Ruto said time is of the essence: ""Further delay will make us busy spectators as calamity wipes out lives and livelihoods."" Up to 700 million people in Africa will be displaced due to lack of water by 2030, he explained. Tuesday w

This week, Momo and Evy have an in-depth discussion about redistributing privilege in the vegan community with the wonderful Mikaela Loach. Mikaela is a climate justice and anti-racism activist, a writer, medical student and host of The Yikes Podcast. In this episode, Mikaela shares her journey to veganism, her early days of animal rights activism and why the word ‘vegan' is no longer front and centre in her activism. Mikaela also shares her ideas on keeping ego out of activism and how the movement will thrive when we listen to marginalised people and focus on the community as a whole rather than glorifying individuals within the vegan community.  While you're listening, please take a moment to check out the links to our sponsors. Not only are Vivo Life a great, vegan company, but their support also allows us to continue to produce The ChickPeeps for you! We love them and their products and we think you will too. This episode is also sponsored by the lovely people at Forager Project. Only for podcast listeners, Forager is offering a limited offer coupon for a free cup of plant-based yoghurt! Claim it here! Also in this episode… Mikaela talks about going vegan overnight at the age of 16 after having her eyes opened to the logical fallacies inherent in eating animals. She shares her admiration for the young activists finding their voice in our movement and notes the importance of social media as a tool for organising and advocating for causes. We talk about the intersection of vegan and anti-racism work and Mikaela reminds us that “being aware of how other beings are oppressed will only ever strengthen our movements, it can't weaken them”.  Mikaela explains the importance of keeping our ego in check, especially when we're advocating for change on behalf of non-human animals.  “If we want to disrupt the system it's going to be uncomfortable”. Mikaela emphasises the need to accept discomfort as part of the process in creating systemic change. How do we reach and change the minds of those who see the world so differently to us? Mikaela gives her perspective on ‘cancelling' people and why she believes we need to lower the bar in terms of bringing people into movements. Mikaela talks about the upcoming season of The Yikes Podcast and explains why she likes podcasting as a medium. Links: Follow Mikaela on Instagram and Twitter. The Yikes Podcast on Spotify and Apple.
