Angela Jones has ridden another two winners since our podcast was recorded on Friday Feb 7th. She won the last at Doomben on Master Showman for Stuart Kendrick and scored on Wanganeen for Tony Gollan at Caloundra on Sunday. That makes it 65 in the state and 38 in town for the current season. Angela's backstory makes for an interesting podcast. She grew up on a sprawling cattle farm 300 kms south west of Mackay where she and four sisters were schooled at home. She could ride a horse at age 3, but had no idea a racing industry existed, until she went to boarding school. Angela begins by confirming that she and partner Kyle Wilson-Taylor talk of little else but racing. She acknowledges how lucky she is to have no weight issues. Angela explains that she rode with no allowance towards the end of her apprenticeship. She was pleasantly surprised when race rides kept coming her way. The twenty three year old takes us back to childhood days on the farm. She says a 20,000 acre spread isn't all that uncommon in rural Queensland. She remembers early times on horseback including long days with her dad out on the muster. Angela talks more of father Jason, mum Julie and her four sisters. The young jockey explains that Julie and all four sisters live in Toowoomba nowadays. She takes us back to boarding school days in Charters Towers. She chose that particular school only because it provided accommodation for one of her horses. Angela remembers a day at  Charters Towers races where Racing Queensland had installed an information booth. That booth was manned by former champion jockey Shane Scriven. Angela bombarded him with questions about the racing game. She looks back on a happy apprenticeship to Lindsay Hatch and an exciting first day as a professional jockey. She takes us through her Dalby treble. Angela says Lindsay Hatch restricted her to non TAB meetings early days. The trainer didn't put a race ride her way for quite some time. She looks back on her transition to the provincial circuit and finally a transfer to top Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan. Angela hasn't forgotten her first meeting with future partner Kyle Wilson-Taylor. The young jockey explains that Tony Gollan arranged extra tuition from retired jockey Robbie Fradd whose stellar international career is well documented. Angela takes us through the horses who've impacted her career thus far with special mention of the talented Zarastro. She says wins in the Ipswich and Caloundra Cups have been career highlights. Angela outlines the ambitions she harbours going forward. This is an insight into the life of a very grounded country girl who followed a dream and hasn't wasted an opportunity.

Proposal would make surgical castration a potential penalty for statutory rape in Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Rankin County Rep. Fred Shanks has filed House Bill 1028 that would increase the penalties for statutory rape. “Essentially, if there's a child involved, 13 or younger, and the offender is 17 or older, it's surgical castration,” explained Shanks. It would be a new option for the judge in sentencing, and it would be in addition to their time in jail. “I'm a father, and my daughter is 13, and you know it really hit home when this came up,” noted Shanks. “I think it's the right thing to do. It sends a strong message. And to be honest, if you know this unfortunate event ever happened to my child, the least of their worries would be this bill.” We asked more of you what you think of the proposal. “I don't have no problem with it,” said Karlos King. “Young children, innocent, pure, I don't think it would be a problem with it.” “I'm not opposed to it,” described Angela Jones. “I just think there needs to be some stipulation. I think if it's a repeat pedophile, absolutely.” “That 13-year-old or under has got to live with that for the rest of their lives,” noted Gayla Book, whose daughter was raped at 13. “There's no getting out of it. You know, there's no 10-year limit for them on whether they get to forget about it in 10 years.” Several states have laws on the books allowing for chemical castration as a consequence of certain sex crimes. However, last year, Louisiana was the first to approve surgical castration. Rep. Shanks is hoping it will clear the committee and be brought up for a vote by the full House of Representatives. “I'd be very curious as to who would vote no on it on the House floor,” he added.

Before the murders of Catherine Davis, Cindy Heller, Angela Ewert, and Sarah Kashka, all of whose cases were connected in some way to Fort Worth's west and southwest sides, a series of murders took place that haunted the victims' families and perhaps only inconvenienced the police department. Sylvia Hynes, Lorane Larkin, Margaret Maxwell, Vicky Chisolm, Jacquelyn Jones, Karen Strong, Angela Jones, and Sandra Bush, among others, were all slain within a three-year period beginning in the summer of 1980. Unlike the mid-1980s cases, however, these early-80s murders saw virtually no help from the press and although some of the crimes shared similarities, a task force was never formed to help solve them.If you have any information about the cases discussed this episode – Sandra Bush, Sylvia Hynes, Lorane Larkin, Margaret Maxwell, Vicky Chisolm, Jacquelyn Jones, Karen Strong, or Angela Jones – please contact the Fort Worth Cold Case Unit at 817-392-4307 or 817-392-4308.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. Today, we're sharing a replay of our podcast episode with EBB Childbirth Class parent, Angela Jones, about having an uncomplicated pregnancy and birth when labeled as high risk. Angela is a macro-level social worker, wife to her husband, Tony, and mom to her son, Allister, and their cats, Pumpernickel and Lion-O. Angela and Tony graduated from the Evidence Based Birth Childbirth Class with EBB instructor, Victoria Michonski. Both Victoria and Heather McCullough, who is also an EBB instructor, were Angela and Tony's doulas for Allister's birth. In today's replay, we talk about Angela's birth story and her experience having an easy, uncomplicated pregnancy and birth despite being labeled as high risk for multiple reasons. We also talk about data birth outcomes for people who have multiple high-risk labels. Three years later, Angela shared this thoughtful update as she reflected on her birth story. Update from Angela: When I am having difficult moments, I sometimes look back at the video of myself giving birth to Allister and feel such peace. Allister turned 3 this year, and recently he has been asking about how he came into this world. My husband and I have been showing him the video of him being born and when he sees it, he looks at me, almost in awe, with a big smile. He now requests to see it at least once per week. Going into my birthing time, I never imagined that I would have 41 hours of active labor. I still credit the EBB course and my amazing doulas with having prepared me well in understanding all of the tools that were available to me when, after 30 hours of not being able to tolerate any food or water, I decided that I wanted to depart from my original birth plan. Getting an epidural allowed me to eat, drink, sleep and then ultimately push my son out gently in the position of my choosing. This was the exact birth experience that I wanted. I still encourage women, especially those who are afraid (in particular, those who are afraid due to multiple "high risk" labels) to not settle for a care team that is anything less than supportive, safe, and empowering. Content note: We talk about ectopic pregnancy, pregnancy losses, high-risk pregnancy complications, and perinatal morbidity. Resources:  Learn more about EBB Instructor, Victoria Michonski, here. The brilliant young Brisbane jockey is under suspension as this podcast is posted. He's not happy about this one or the many that have preceded it in his short career so far. In the main his suspensions are the result of trying too hard to win. He's a driven young man who harbours a desire to make his mark in the shortest possible time. Slowly but surely he's realising the error of his ways. Kyle tells his story with total honesty and great sensitivity. He begins by outlining a new understanding of his responsibility when riding in races. The young jockey says he's fortunate that his weight remains stable during suspension layoffs. Kyle takes us back to childhood days in Victoria and some tough times for his mother and siblings. He reminisces about his dislike of the classroom and the surprise invitation to ride a horse at a school camp. He says this was life's defining moment. The jockey says he was only twelve years old when he first started to spend time at the Seymour stables of Lee and Shannon Hope.  He's never forgotten the help he received from Bronwyn Upjohn at a Kilmore breaking and pre-training operation. Kyle pays tribute to the grandfather who offered him encouragement and guidance. He's totally frank as he looks back on his attitude to life in mid teens, and a brush with drugs.  The jockey gives credit to an uncle who talked him into getting away from Victoria. From here the Wilson-Taylor story takes an amazing turn. He recalls turning up at Coffs Harbour racecourse and offering his services as a trackwork rider. Kyle has never forgotten the support offered by local trainer Brett Dodson. They're still great mates. You can hear the delight in his voice as he reminisces about his first day of race riding. He was in disbelief when one of his three mounts greeted the judge. Kyle looks back on the Grafton race fall that decimated his confidence. He actually left racing and worked in other roles. He talks of his return to racing and a stint with Dwayne Schmidt at Grafton and the beginning of his friendship with racing administrator Michael Beattie. The jockey talks of his association with manager Glenn Courtney and a move to a new life at Toowoomba. On his very first night at Clifford Park he met his partner, aspiring jockey Angela Jones. He acknowledges the support of trainer Lindsay Hatch. Kyle recalls some of his memorable days at the races including a five timer at Doomben. He looks back on a brief association with the emerging champion stayer Incentivise. Understandably he enjoys reminiscing about his day of days at Eagle Farm last June- a Gr 1 win on talented mare Palaisipan. Kyle says he enjoys an occasional return to NSW northern rivers meetings. He reviews an outstanding day at the Lismore Cup meeting last September. He looks back on brief associations with top mares Hinged and Gypsy Goddess. Kyle talks of his total obsession with racing and his addiction to the Sky Racing coverage. The jockey looks at his only two hit and run missions to Sydney. In conclusion the young jockey offers encouragement to young people who might be on the wrong track or heading that way.

Three education experts discuss how young people can find postgrad success (and it's not a 'one-size-fits-all' approach). With high school graduation approaching, many young people across Washington state will be taking a big step toward adulthood. Whether they have all the information and encouragement they need to make a decision that is right for them is less certain. For this episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, we listen in on a conversation about the education-to-work pipeline with education advocates from throughout state, including Seattle Public Schools, Washington STEM and the state superintendent's office. Speakers Kelvin Dankwa, Angie-Mason Smith and Rebecca Wallace detail the challenges facing students in the talk, which took place during the Crosscut Ideas Festival in early May and was moderated by Angela Jones of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Wallace, from the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, suggests that there needs to be a better effort made to let students know that there are multiple pathways to success after high-school graduation, that the idea of 'one-size-fits-all' is failing students and their families. The panel also discusses "adult bias in education” and how it affects students' belief in what they can achieve after high school. This conversation was recorded on May 4, 2023 at the Crosscut Ideas Festival in Seattle. --- Credits Host: Paris Jackson Producer: Seth Halleran Event producers: Jake Newman, Anne O'Dowd Engineers: Resti Bagcal, Viktoria Ralph --- If you would like to support Crosscut, go to crosscut.com/membership. On today's podcast, we're going to talk with EBB Childbirth Class Parents, Lisa Mangini and Anand Swaminathan about their high-intervention birth story! So many people have negative associations with interventions— but Lisa and Anand's story shows how you can still experience a joyful, empowering birth, even in the midst of complications! Lisa Mangini is a writer living in Central Pennsylvania with her husband, Anand and young son. She teaches English and creative writing at a university and is in the early stages of writing a book about becoming a parent. I think Lisa is the first person I've heard of who found the EBB Childbirth Class through a neurologist! During her first pregnancy (which ended in a miscarriage), Lisa had her first tonic-clonic seizure. Lisa had to dive into a journey to manage her seizure disorder and several other health conditions, all while trying to conceive and then eventually getting pregnant. Lisa and Anand's story is perfect for anyone who is facing a high-risk pregnancy or supporting clients who are high-risk! Lisa talks about dealing with prenatal anxiety, switching hospitals and providers, deciding to hire a doula, and how a calm, experienced midwife can be a huge asset during a high-risk birth situation. About Angela Jones: She was a physician assistant and worked in Trauma Surgery in Boston for 10 years, she loved her job and spent her free time traveling the world until she started feeling very burnt out and uninspired in her job. Things started to spin out of control when her dad suffered a massive stroke. That's when she learned to focus on small habits everyday, on small things that she could control instead of letting herself be overwhelmed with the unknown. She shares thoughts and scientifically-proven techniques that harness the power of habits in her blog where she also offers a digital course all about habits. In this episode, Adam and Angela Jones discuss:How to create a habit Recognizing our triggers Strengthening a habit Key Takeaways:Remember the habit loop. Start small, track your habits, and keep going - don't give up on yourself too early. Once you successfully do that, you can then begin stack habits upon habits in order to continually reinforce them.Be less reactive, notice what triggers bad habits and replace the automatic action with something better. When triggered by something annoying or infuriating, instead of being angry - you can instead take a few deep breaths. When you create habits, practice it everyday. Even better, be accountable to someone.  "Think about what you felt, or did, or thought right before it happened and that may give you a clue as to what your triggers might be. If you're trying to strengthen a meditation habit, pay attention to when you feel stressed, overwhelmed, controlled. And that's how you hack that habit loop…” —  Angela JonesConnect with Angela Jones:Website:  https://misshabitaddict.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ajones1122Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/MissHabitAddict/_saved/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_angela_jones/ Connect With Adam Weber:Website: https://meditationnotmedicine.com/about/Email: adam@meditationnotmedicine.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/easytomeditate Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meditationnotmedicine/  Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPnbji9rDrCfxhY0W8sHL9ABook: Meditation Not Medicine Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla.Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. This episode is one that was especially thrilling to make, as it was the first one I actually recorded face to face – out in the open, hence the background sound of the river rushing by and the birds singing. Which is really appropriate as my guest, Angela Jones, spends almost as much time in the river as on dry land. Angela is a wild swimming specialist, a fitness instructor, a traveller, an adventurer and now an author. She has swum without a wetsuit amongst icebergs in Iceland, kayaked, swum and run the length of the river Wye and from coast to coast in Scotland. She's also won international triathlon events, though she tells me she's never been motivated by competition, and feels at her happiest in and around the river – and in particular the beautiful river Wye. “The river Wye flows through my veins and is my office and my playground,” she says.In this episode Angela and I chat about her love of the river and wild swimming. She tells me about the worrying deterioration in the health of the river that she has noticed and logged over the years, and we talk about what we can do to make a difference and save our rivers. We discuss her appearance on a Panorama documentary about discharges of raw sewage into the river and finally she tells me about her wonderful new book, Wild Swimming the River Wye.ResourcesYou can find out  more about Angela here.To buy her fabulous book, Wild Swimming the River Wye click here.Sign the petition Angela refers to here.Watch the Panorama documentary on the river pollution scandal here.Find more resources for saving our rivers on my website, here. And watch us swimming together in the river here (and why not subscribe to my YouTube channel while you're there?!)
