Ashley Dunbar from The Magic of the Season is with me to dive into the Grinch rip-off episode of “Hello Kitty's Furry Take Theater!”It's Christmas time, and Scroogenip (Scrinchnip?) is aghast at all the yuletide cheer. Determined to avoid the season and cause chaos, she steals the town's decorations. After Kitty and friends decorate the enormous tree for town square, Scroogenip swipes that too—and everyone else's trees too! The town seems unphased, so she ups the ante by dressing as Santa Paws and taking all the presents! Realizing that the best part of Christmas is giving, Hello Kitty and gang go caroling and handing out presents. They give a Christmas cookie to Scroogenip/Scrinchnip and it melts her icy heart. She immediately returns the gifts and decorations, Grinch-style.The Grinch? Yep, played by Catnip. Cindy Lou Who? Uh huh, performed by My Melody. Santa? Well, it's none other than Grinder. The Cincinnati native flawlessly and creatively blends the influences of Stevie Wonder with Beethoven and Kenny Kirkland with Bach. He is seen as "a leader whose playing is nothing short of breathtaking" (CityBeat). His distinctive style creates a sound that is uniquely robust and smooth.   Dr. Menefield has shared the stage with Roy Ayers, Clark Terry, David “Fathead” Newman, Gary Bartz, John Blake, Don Braden, Steve Wilson, Javon Jackson, and a host of other outstanding musicians. In 2018, he served as musical director for Jennifer Holliday and participated on the creative team that produced music for the pilot episode of the HBO television series The Watchmen. He continues to perform at venues across the United States and the world, most recently performing in Namibia and Guatemala. He also traveled as a performer/presenter on the university tour, 400: An Afrikan Epic, with the Mark Lomax Quartet (2019-2020).William's journey in music composition began early, at the age of eight, in response to his mother’s removal of all televisions from their home. His passion for composing inspired him to earn music composition degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (BM, 2005) and The University of Texas at Austin (DMA, 2011).Dr. Menefield is currently working on commissions for the Cincinnati Opera, including the new opera, Fierce, with librettist Sheila Williams and dramaturg D. Lynn Meyer (set to debut in the summer of 2021). In 2020, he was also commissioned by Dr. Victoria Holland, lyric soprano and vocal coach at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, to compose the five-part song cycle, Here. Could there be something alien going on behind the scenes? Probably not, but we're going to discuss it anyway.

With Hello Kitty's birthday being only a mere 164 days away, we decided to do a bit of early celebration by watching the very first Hello Kitty cartoon broadcast on TV! Furry Tale Theater, despite the name, largely consists of weird half-arsed parodies of both public domain books and films that were popular at the time. Because there were only 3 other Sanrio characters that weren't very import-friendly (namely due to Japanese names and also due to one being just two angelic humans), some one off characters were created to fill out the cast. We have the Sanrio lineup of Kitty and her extended family, My Melody and Tuxedo Sam followed by the Dic creations Catnip and Grinder. There's also the strange anomaly character of Chip the seal who appears to be both a Sanrio and a Dic creation, having been made especially for the purposes of this show. Unfortunately, this show ended up being a bit flat and overall naff - I mean, the stand-in characters Dic made just look like rejects from The Catillac Cats for gods sake. So in order to spice it up, we spend the first half of this episode talking about how good the new Netflix series Aggretsuko is. Seriously, go watch it, it's so good.
