A student entrepreneur saving 1,000kg of e-waste every year building his own gaming PCs was the winner of the Student Enterprise of the Year winning the senior category at the awards that took place in Mullingar. Jack Cannon, a senior student at Clonkeen College in Dun Laoghaire, built his first PC at the age of 11 with the help of his brother. He set up Cannon PC at part of the Local Enterprise Offices' Student Enterprise Programme and so far, has achieved sales of almost €40,000. Cannon builds upcycled high speed gaming PCs from old PCs being disposed of in office clear outs and for general sale online. Upcycling project wins student enterprise award There were also top awards handed out in the Intermediate and Junior categories. Suet & Song, a business set up by Michael O'Keeffe from St. Kieran's College in Kilkenny, creates high-quality, nutrient rich suet cakes for birds during the colder months and it took home the top prize in the Intermediate Category. In the Junior category a device that helps hikers and farmers cross electric fencing easily won the top award. The inaugural Student Enterprise Programme Alumni Award was presented to Fenu Health. Set up by sisters Kate and Annie Madden for the Student Enterprise Programme in 2016, the company creates supplements for equine health and their customers include five royal families. The 23rd Student Enterprise Programme National Finals saw 85 businesses from across the country shortlisted in three main categories. The Local Enterprise Office initiative, supported by Enterprise Ireland and local authorities, commenced last September in secondary schools nationwide with over 30,000 students taking part this year. The event was hosted by broadcasters Rick O'Shea and Louise Cantillon and they were joined during the ceremony by Peter Burke, T.D. Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Employment as they announced the winners across the three main categories on the day. The initiative, funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities throughout the country, has seen over 450,000 take part in the programme since it began 23 years ago. Gareth Evans, Chair of the Local Enterprise Office's Enterprise Education Committee, said; "It's been another hugely successful year for the Student Enterprise Programme. Last year we had over 30,000 participants and we will hit that again this year. So, the appetite for student entrepreneurs is growing and that is no doubt down to seeing the amazing young entrepreneurs this country is producing. We've had some excellent winners here today and going on previous successes they will go on to do great things. A great example today was our Alumni Winner, Fenu Health, who are now an outstanding Irish business trading internationally. Today is just the start for these winners and finalists. The skills and lessons they have learned through the process will stand by them for life and we're excited to see where their businesses go from here and the new ones they start-up in the future." The National Final students, who competed across Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories were challenged with creating, setting up and running their own business, which must show sales of their service or product. The judging panel included business owners and representatives from enterprise agencies and associated bodies. Following two intense days of competition in the CanSat Ireland National Finals, a team of students from Confey Community College, Kildare, has today clinched the coveted national title. The CanSat Ireland competition is an ESERO Ireland collaboration, co-funded by the European Space Agency and Research Ireland and coordinated by MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory. The victory marks the end of a campaign that began in September 2024. All participants in this year's competition have displayed incredible technological prowess, with judges lauding the expansive expertise on display from the teams of young scientists. A CanSat is a simulation of a real satellite developed in the size and shape of a soda can. A European Space Agency initiative, the competition fosters an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) careers by offering students a hands-on experience of a space-themed project. The multidisciplinary nature of the project ensures students are exposed to industry standards in a broad array of potential career paths. In recent months, regional competitions have taken place across Ireland, in partnership with the Technological Universities in Dublin, Athlone, Limerick, Tralee, and Cork. Regional winners gathered in Emo Court, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, on Thursday 1st May, and launched their mini-satellites in rockets to a height of over 350 metres. On Friday 2nd May, these national finalists presented their analysis, recordings and flight patterns to the judging panel consisting of experts from a range of STEM fields. Congratulating Confey Community College, Alan Giltinan, project coordinator for CanSat Ireland said: "Confey College can't be praised enough for this achievement. Winning the National Final of the CanSat competition is no small feat. Year on year, the STEM literacy of the participating students seems to increase as rapidly as the technology they're working with. The technical competency displayed by teams all over the country continues to surpass the expectations of the judges. These students represent Ireland's STEM future, and I think it's safe to say we're in very good hands! ." The students from Confey have been invited to attend the celebratory event, 'Space Engineer for a Day', at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in The Netherlands. The students will have the opportunity to explore ESTEC facilities and laboratories, network with space experts, and present their work to a panel of experts. The CanSat competition will re-open in September 2025. Students or teachers interested in competing in the next iteration of the project are encouraged to visit the CanSat project page at esero.ie. Art Hounds: Rocking chairs, new opera and breaking

From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Resting as resistance Folk musician Emily Youngdahl Wright of Minneapolis admires writer and community-space-maker Amọké Kubat. She wants people to know about the final step of Kubat's ongoing project to honor those who mother children by offering them a place to rest — literally. The exhibit features rocking chairs that were created during a community build and then painted, collaged or otherwise re-created by Minnesota artists. “Rocking Chair (Re)Evolution” is a free, drop-in show at the Weisman Art Museum on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. The exhibit is open Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29 from 11-5 p.m., with a ceremony on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. The rocking chairs will be gifted to 12 mothers and grandmothers previously chosen with community feedback. Emily said: The whole project itself is just such a beautiful example of thinking about what kind of rest do you need, and what kind of support do you need? The chairs are an example, I think, of tending to the spirit and the heart and the body [in] this work that really doesn't end when you're a parent and when you're a grandparent, and when you are tending to this world that is in so much need of tending right now.— Emily Youngdahl Wright21st century opera Composer Eric Heukeshoven of Winona plans to head to Rochester to watch Hometown Opera Company's New Media Opera performance, featuring scenes of new and familiar works staged in a multimedia format. The first act consists of scenes from Rochester composer Kevin Dobbe's “Tempus Fugit.” The second act centers women's voices with scenes from Verdi, Puccini, Dvořák, Wagner and Strauss. Performances are Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rochester Civic Theatre. Eric Heukeshoven said the staging is: As 21st century as I can possibly imagine. It is an opera that explores the human experience and time, and it does this by combining live performances of vocalists and dancers with digital projections, what Kevin calls motion-capture ‘metahumans' and singing projected avatars. I've seen a clip that he sent me recently, and it is absolutely mesmerizing.(He adds that Act Two scenes are “fully staged and choreographed, but also using projections that Kevin has created.”)— Eric HeukeshovenMinneapolis hosts breaking qualifier for national competition Kelly Rabe of Champlain started taking hip hop and breaking classes over the pandemic, and she wants people to know that Minneapolis will be in the national eye this weekend when it hosts the Red Bull BC One Cypher One competition. Local and regional b-girls and b-boys will compete in one-on-one battle style for a spot at the National Finals in Denver. The event will be held in a new venue on the Minneapolis scene: Royalston Square, located in the North Loop. There are open qualifier preliminaries on Friday. The main event is Saturday, starts at 7 p.m. and costs $10. Kelly described her experience: This is probably maybe my third year going to the BC One, and I have to say, it is like the most hyped event I have ever been to in the Twin Cities. I mean, it's better than music festivals. It's better than dance parties. There's just an energy like nothing else. The spectators are really supportive of the dancers. They'll be cheering, they'll be screaming, jumping up and down when they see the dancers do amazing things. It's a really welcoming community. Not to mention they have, like, world-renowned DJs that are spinning the tunes for these dancers. So, I mean, it's a full dance and music action. — Kelly Rabe

5th year student, Maura Moore-McCune representing The King's Hospital School, Palmerstown in Co. Dublin has won the title of SciFest STEM Champion 2024 with her project 'VIPMOD: Vision Impaired Person's Moving Object Detector'. Maura Moore-McCune will represent Ireland at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair 2025 in Columbus, Ohio. Now in its 19th year, SciFest is Ireland's largest, most-inclusive all-island STEM fair programme for second-level students. The National Final, held in Marino Conference Centre in Dublin today, was attended by students from every corner of the island, with 62 students qualifying to participate this year. Since 2006, the programme has continued to evolve and expand, reporting an average increase of over 20% year on year. This has been helped by the tremendous support offered by Intel Ireland, Boston Scientific, EirGrid and Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. Maura Moore-McCune, who is vision impaired, developed an app to detect fast moving objects, so that vision impaired people can live safer and more independent lives. This project evolved through six prototypes. The first three prototypes used Micro:bits. Prototype 4 uses GPS technology. Prototype 5 is an app which uses TensorFlow.js Image Classification model to detect oncoming vehicles and other objects. The app displays the object's name, vibrates and issues a text-to-speech warning. Finally, Prototype 6 is an application that estimates the speed of oncoming objects. It uses a YOLOv8 model to analyse input footage. Prototype 5 was tested in a controlled setting, with 95% accuracy (316 trials). Vision Ireland will be testing VIPMOD in the WayFinding Centre - an indoor environment replicating the real-world experience of using public transport for vision impaired people. Maura was presented with the SciFest STEM Champion 2024 Award by Sheila Porter, SciFest Founder and CEO. Maura rose to win the top prize, following her success at the regional final in SciFest@TU Dublin Tallaght. Founded in 2006, the programme's primary aim is to encourage students' participation in STEM in an enjoyable and interactive way. SciFest is free to enter and open to everyone across the island of Ireland, no matter their background or circumstance. Speaking at this year's National Final, CEO and Founder of SciFest, Sheila Porter commented: "On behalf of everyone here at SciFest, I would like to extend a warm congratulations to all the winners, particularly to Maura for winning the title of SciFest STEM Champion 2024. SciFest has been providing opportunities in STEM for students for nearly two decades, and I am proud to have watched it evolve during that time. And while every year, we continue to grow, our core mission remains the same: to inspire and empower the next generation to engage with and explore the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This year saw a big uptake in projects focusing on the environment and sustainability - critical areas for shaping a better future. I want to sincerely thank everybody who has been involved - from our students, teachers, and parents to our wonderful sponsors - all of whom have contributed to this extraordinary event. Together, we continue to drive progress and spark the creativity that will lead us into the future." Other award winners at the SciFest 2024 National Final were: Lily Cahill who won the SciFest STEM Champion 2024 Runner-up Award for her project on 'Investigating Whether Childhood Imaginary Companions Impact Social Competence and Coping Skills in Teenage Years' Fionn Campbell who won the Berlin Long Night of Science Award for his project on 'A Crystal-Clear Way to Slow Down Ireland's Energy Crisis' Maura Moore-McCune who won the Boston Scientific Medical Devices Grand Award for her project on 'VIPMOD:Vision Impaired Person's Moving Object Detector' Gráinne Ní Chrónín who won the Boston Scientific Medical Devices Grand Award Runner Up for her project on 'No More Ice, Ice Baby!' ...
