I was introduced to Ksenia Luki by a mutual artist friend when I was looking for a Russian-speaking musician and singer to collaborate on a song adaptation for the October Project who you might remember from previous episodes. Not only did I enjoy collaborating with Ksenia, but I also discovered an absolutely unique approach to exploring, creating, and performing music. We talk about the challenges of being a bilingual artist, creating most work not in your native language. Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Singer/Songwriter Mary Fahl Interprets Pink Floyd, ELO and Others On New Solo Album “Can't Get It Out Of My Head”  In an effort to find some light and comfort during these challenging times, singer/songwriter Mary Fahl looks back to some of the essential music that has brought her sustenance and clarity by reinterpreting songs from her greatest inspirations … and a tribute to the music that defined her as an artist. Mary's most recent release “Can't Get It Out of My Head,” is a collection of songs that she calls “essential” to her development as an artist … “On top of all the madness that was happening in the world, I was grappling with the devastating loss of my mother and sister this past year and was feeling completely rootless. In an effort to find an anchor, a link to the past, a sense of home, I began to immerse myself in the comfort of music from my youth. “The challenge for me and my producer Mark Doyle was to make each of these songs our own while paying tribute to their original greatness...,” says Fahl, “Along with a standard hi-res audio version, we wanted to bring these classics into a new light by utilizing the latest audio technologies to reinterpret my favorite Pink Floyd, Neil Young, George Harrison, Richard Thompson, Moody Blues, The Rolling Stones, ELO, Nick Drake, Judy Collins, and the Mamas and Papas songs in the brilliant, full immersive, high-resolution clarity of 5.1 surround.” Please welcome singer/songwriter/musician… Mary Fahl to Interviewing the Legends …. We have another wonderful 2fer for you this week.  First up is Paul Humphries of OMD! The band recently completed a hugely successful US tour and are now in Europe bringing the same greatness. They remain one of the best live acts around and the music they've made since reforming a few years ago remains top notch! Paul and I discuss the history of the band, what they did during the break, and the stories behind many of the classic songs.  Then we hear from the talented singer Mary Fahl! In the early 90s, Mary Fahl was the lead singer of the band October Project. That unique group was a great spotlight for her powerful vocals and when they broke up, Mary went solo and has had a strong career ever since. This week sees the release of her new covers album that features her version of classics by Pink Floyd, ELO, Judy Collins and much more. We get into the ups and downs of her career, why she loves Pink Floyd so much (she has an album covering Dark Side) and what happened with October Project.  Enjoy!  www.omd.uk.com www.maryfahl.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Location: New York Date: Friday 29th October Project: loomered.com This year's Bitcoin 2021 conference was the biggest event in Bitcoin's history, with over 12,000 people coming together in Miami. I was there to host one of the most hotly anticipated events called ‘Banking the Unbanked' which saw my friend Alex Gladstein interview Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. Jack didn't disappoint when he began by stating “Bitcoin changes everything… I don't think there's anything more important to work on in my lifetime.” Yet, the session is perhaps best known for the fact that activist Laura Loomer came to the stage and heckled Jack. Laura wanted a conversation with Jack about censorship, in light of the fact she has been banned from Twitter (amongst other platforms and services such as Facebook, Uber and PayPal). She was encouraged to leave, but before she did I promised to hear her out at a more appropriate time, so here we are. Whatever you think of Laura, ‘deplatforming' is one of the most contentious issues in society today. It cuts to the heart of the debate around free speech and American's first amendment rights. Should we have limits on speech? Or is ‘hate speech' misapplied to muzzle acceptable discourse? Who decides on what is acceptable or not? And can private organisations remove voices from their platforms when they have become the world's town square? Laura has tested these arguments in the courts by suing Twitter, Apple, Facebook, and Twitter. In this interview I talk to far-right political activist Laura Loomer. We discuss racism and religious discrimination, debanking and deplatforming, and the limits of free speech.

Mary Fahl has been interpreting the sounds of the deities for us for close to 30 years. She was the voice for the 90's band "October Project" which was an outstanding group of musicians. She moved on to create some wonderful classical vocal work, but she honestly can do whatever she wants. Example, she found a song in 11th Century Spanish/Arabic and sang it. Her work was also in "Gods and Generals". She most recently produced a blue ray of her own interpretation of "Dark Side of The Moon" by Pink Floyd, that was meant to be played as loud as a 747 engine blaring right outside your window. (Just get the blue ray and try it). Mary on Facebook @MaryFahlMusic www.maryfahl.com

Vinyl LP Records - - - The history - - A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), often simply called a record, was an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. Because the records were made of polyvinyl chloride they took on the name “VINYL”. In the mid-2000s, gradually, records made of any material began to be called vinyl records, or simply vinyl. The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. - - - The details - - The LP record (from "long playing" or "long play") is a phonograph record format characterized by a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm, having a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter, and uses the "microgroove" groove specification. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. The new product was a 12- or 10-inch (30 or 25 cm) fine-grooved disc made of PVC ("vinyl") and played with a smaller-tipped "microgroove" stylus at a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm. Each side of a 12-inch LP could play for about 22 minutes. The average LP has about 1,500 feet (460 m; 0.28 mi) of groove on each side. The average tangential needle speed relative to the disc surface is approximately 1 mile per hour (1.6 km/h; 0.45 m/s). It travels fastest on the outside edge. - - - It is one, long, groove, filled with music. But, in reality, it is “Just A Groove”, an album oriented groove. Location: Los Angeles Date: Friday, 18th October Project: 1000x Role: CEO Bitcoin is a public ledger, which allows anyone to view any transaction and address thus offer pseudonymity rather than anonymity. What this means is that Bitcoin can provide a certain level of privacy if your Bitcoin address is not attached to personal information, for example, exchange KYC data. Bitcoiners wanting to protect their privacy must take careful steps, a lapse in concentration can identify you as the owner of a particular address. By accessing a block explorer without using Tor or a VPN, posting your public key online, utilizing a KYC compliant exchange are all examples of how chain analysts can identify you.  Because of this, Bitcoin may not seem like the perfect tool to facilitate transactions on dark markets, yet it currently accounts for the vast majority of them. So why is this?  Bitcoin, by design, as a censorship-resistant currency enables dark markets. If you want to purchase something that your government deems illegal, and If you are willing to take the necessary precautions (using a VPN or Tor, CoinJoin and not reusing addresses) you can maintain your privacy.  Since the Silk Road, Bitcoin has been the most used cryptocurrency used to buy drugs, firearms, identity documents and anything else from dark markets. By tracking the data in this space are we able to judge whether Bitcoin adoption is growing? And, is censorship resistance the only use-case that matters? In this interview, I talk to Cedric Dahl from 1000x. 1000x is a private think tank focused on researching Bitcoin usage data. We discuss dark markets, sanctioned states using Bitcoin and censorship resistance.

Location: San Francisco Date: Monday, 21st October Project: n/a Role: Blockchain, cryptocurrency, and smart contracts pioneer On October 31st 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto emailed the cypherpunk mailing list, telling them "I've been working on a new electronic cash system that's fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party." In the 11 years that followed Bitcoin has proven to be the most successful attempt at creating a censorship-resistant and trust minimised digital currency. Bitcoin was not the first attempt at creating a trust minimised currency, and there were several proposals, implementations and technologies which led to Bitcoin: In the 1990's DigiCash, headed by David Chaum, attempted to make online payments anonymous. In 1997 Adam Back created HashCash using a proof-of-work system to reduce email spam and prevent denial of service attacks.  In 1998 Wei Dai proposed B-money to allow for an "anonymous, distributed electronic cash system".  In 2004 Hal Finney built upon the idea of Hashcash and created Reusable Proofs of Work.  And in 2005 Nick Szabo proposed Bit Gold. Where unforgettable proof of work chains would share properties of gold: scarce, valuable and trust minimised but with the benefit of being easily transactable.  When Satoshi released the Bitcoin whitepaper, rather than a revolution, Bitcoin was an evolution of all that had come before it with Bitcoin being the most trust minimised, censorship-resistant and hardest currency that has ever existed. Among Satoshi's email recipients was Nick Szabo, a computer scientist, cryptographer, the designer of Bit Gold and Smart Contracts pioneer. In a rare interview, Nick joins me to discuss the cypherpunk movement, what money is, privacy and of course, Bitcoin.
